Official Synopsis For Johnny Depp Starrer Transcendence Revealed

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transcendence-preview-pic1There’s been a lot of interest in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer Wally Pfister. However Pfister has learned a few things about secrecy from Nolan, so while there have been bits and pieces about what the movie is about, there’s not been much official.

However now an official synopsis has been released, giving us some more info on the movie, which stars Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany.

Here is is: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’

The film is due out next April.

Dexter Fletcher To Direct Freddie Mercury Biopic, With Ben Whishaw Confirmed To Star

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dexter-FletcherEver since Sacha Baron-Cohen dropped out of the planned Freddie Mercury a few years ago there’s been much speculation over who will replace him, however there’s been less talk about who will direct. Now Deadline reports that actor turned director Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill, Sunshine on Leith), will helm.

It’s also been confirmed that as rumoured for the past couple of months, Ben Whishaw will play Mercury. He’s now officially made a deal to star.

Fletcher has apparently been meeting with the surviving members of Queen to get a better feel for the story. The movie will be a coming-of-age tale, leading up to Queen’s iconic Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985, which is considered one of the great rock performances of all time. Peter Morgan, Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen J. Rivele wrote the screenplay, with production slated to begin next year.

Mercury died of AIDS in 1991, although his last days will not be part of the film. There will be plenty of Queen music. It was reported that Baron-Cohen left as he wanted a gritty, warts-and-all tale, while Queen is hoping for a more family friendly film, and that is why he left. Because of this, the presumably won’t get into the wilder side of Freddie’s life and sexuality.

Bryan Singer Reportedly Directing X-Men: Apocalypse

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singerLast week, director Bryan Singer revealed to a world via a Tweet that X-Men: Apocalypse is in the works and coming Summer 2016. However there wasn’t a huge amount more information, and we didn’t know if Singer was directing or just producing.

Now Vulture has apparently confirmed that Singer will indeed be at the helm of the upcoming mutant adventure. It’s also believed that the movie will focus primarily on the X-Men: First Class characters, led by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Professor X and Magneto.

A separate report also suggests that while in the comics, Apocalypse is suggested to be connected to aliens (in some incarnations at least), in the movie he will be earthly. X-Men: Apocalypse comes to theaters May 27th, 2016. The film is directed by Bryan Singer.

Tom Cruise Up For Jack Reacher Sequel, Based On Never Look Back

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack-Reacher-posterJack Reacher may not have been a massive blockbuster, but with a $220 million worldwide gross (on a $60 million budget), Paramount has decided it’s worth making a sequel. Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are officially developing a follow-up based on Lee Child’s novel, Never Look Back. Tom Cruise is once more attached to star.

It’s not clear when it may shoo. Rumours had suggested they may try to slot it in before Tom shoots Mission: Impossible 5, which is set for release on December 25, 2015. Paramount are currently denying that claim, although they did confirm that this sequel is on the fast track.

Never Look Back is the latest of the Jack Reacher novels. It sees Jack return to his old military base in Virginia, where he is set to take the new female commanding officer out to dinner. However he discovers that she has been arrested, and Jack is also facing charges of assaulting a man and fathering a child. Reacher has no recollection of any of these things happening, which understandably starts him looking into what has happened.

Paramount is currently seeking writers for the project. Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed Jack Reacher, but now that he’s signed up for Mission: Impossible 5, he doesn’t have time to write the Reacher sequel at the moment. However, if Never Look Back does shoot after M:I5, McQuarrie way direct.

Jason Momoa Eyed for Batman Vs. Superman

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-momoaJason Momoa, best known for Conan The Barbarian and Game Of Thrones, is now in negotiations for the highly anticipated Batman Vs. Superman, according to THR. However at this stage it isn’t known who he will play.

If a deal is made, he will join Henry Cavill (Superman/Clark Kent), Ben Affleck (Batman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman).

Inevitably there are already rumours about who Momoa might be playing, with most of the speculation suggesting that the muscle-bound actor may be the villainous Doomsday or Martin Manhunter. Warner Bros. is now focussing on the Lex Luthor role, with the studio seeking African-American actors to play the iconic villain. It’s not believed Momoa will take this role, although it hasn’t been denied by the studio.

Has The Title Of The New Terminator Movie Been Revealed?

December 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terminator-2With a ticking clock before some rights return to James Cameron, Terminator franchise owners Annapurna Pictures is trying to get a fifth movie into production as quick as possible, and with a desire to make as much money out of it as possible, there’s also talk of a new TV series.

Now it seems the title of the film may have been revealed, as Production Weekly tweeted, ‘Added prod. office info for Alan Taylor’s TERMINATOR: GENESIS and the indie LILA & EVE starring Viola Davis & @JLo’.

There are already a lot of people saying Terminator: Genesis is a very underwhelming title, so don’t be surprised if it changes, but that’s what seems to be the name at the moment. The movie should see Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the franchise, with a 2015 release planned.

On the TV series front, Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (Thor, X-Men: First Class) have signed on to write a pilot script and executive produce, with Terminator 5 writers Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis also serving as executive producers.

The plot of the series will apparently follow a crucial moment from the original Terminator, taking the story in a completely different direction than the movie. The narratives of both the Terminator 5 movie and its subsequent sequels will be designed to intersect with the TV story line at some point in the future.

So it certainly seems we’re gonna get a lot of Terminator, but with Annpurna having paid a huge amount for the rights, it’s little wonder they’re trying to mine them.

Frozen Sneaks Past Catching Fire To Top The US Box Office

December 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

frozen-teaser-quadFrozen had a great opening over the Thanksgiving holiday, but even so it ended up second on the US box office chart due to the continuing success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. However this weekend the roles were reversed as Frozen snuck past Catching Fire with $31 million versus Hunger Games 2’s $27 million.

It’s good news for Disney as it’s one of the best holds following Thanksgiving ever and suggests the movie will continue to do well going into Christmas.

The only new entry on the chart was the Christian Bale starrer Out Of The Furnace, which may have placed third, but still tanked pretty badly taking just $5.3 million. Some had thought the movie might be an awards contender, but it’s unlikely it’ll be in the running and will probably end up a complete flop, especially as it seems to be getting pretty lousy word of mouth.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 6th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Frozen $31.6 $134.2
2 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $27.0 $336.6
3 Out Of The Furnace $5.3 $5.3
4 Thor: The Dark World $4.7 $193.6
5 Delivery Man $3.7 $24.7
6 Homefront $3.3 $15.2
7 The Book Thief $2.7 $12.0
8 The Best Man Holiday $2.6 $67.2
9 Philomena $2.2 $8.2

2014 is hopefully going to be a big year for Dominic Cooper, with a villainous role in Need For Speed, as well as Reasonable Doubt – and now we have the trailer for the latter.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Reasonable Doubt follows District Attorney Mitch Brockden (Cooper), who commits a fatal hit-and-run and decides to throw the case against the accused criminal blamed for the crime, only to learn that he acquitted a guilty man that he needs to find and stop before he kills again.’

Samuel L. Jackson co-stars with a January US release set, although it’s not clear when it’ll reach the UK. [Read more…]

First Pic Of Denzel Washington In The Equalizer Debuts

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Equalizer-movie-pic1After years of talking about it a The Equalizer finally went into production earlier this year, but we haven’t heard much about it since then. Now HeyUGuys has picked up the first still from the movie, which isn’t particularly revealing but does show Denzel Washington in the central role.

Washington will play Robert McCall, a former intelligence officer who now lives a solitary existence while holding down a job at Home Depot. He is forced to spring back into action when an act of kindness towards a teenage prostitute (Chloe Moretz) lands him in hot water with the Russian mafia.

The film marks a reunion for Washington and his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. It’ll be out next September.

Disney Takes Over The Indiana Jones Franchise From Paramount

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

indiana-jones-harrison-fordIndIt was reported recently that Harrison Ford only agreed to appear in the new Star Wars movies if the now Disney owned Lucasfilm moved forward on another Indiana Jones movie – however the problem has been that Paramount still owned the rights to Indy, making things more difficult.

Now the way has been cleared as Walt Disney Studios has reached a distribution and marketing agreement for the Indiana Jones franchise. Paramount retains its rights to the original four films in the franchise, and they’ll also get a portion of the cash from any future instalments that are produced and released.

It’s a good deal for Paramount, as they’ve already made tens of million from a similar arrangement where Disney took over the distribution of Marvel movies that Paramount was set to release, allowing them to get cash for doing absolutely nothing, but also allow Disney complete control after they bought Marvel.

There’s been no official announcement about a fifth Indy movie, but it seems very likely not Disney has the rights.
