Coulson Returns As Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Poster Drops

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

agents-of-shield-poster1It’s not too long now until Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. hits TV screens. Now we’ve got the official poster for the series, which shows us the cast and lets us know that those in the US will be able to catch the pilot – directed by Joss Whedon – on September 24th.

The show features the return of Agent Coulson, who appeared to die in The Avengers, but is now alive and part of a team of agents who have to deal with the emergence of people with powers. Inevitably that causes all manner of issues as not everyone is like Thor, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Bruce Banner.

There’s a lot of excitement for the series, and hopefully it’ll live up to expectations and expand the Marvel Universe successfully to TV.

2 Guns Beats The Smurfs 2 To The Top Of The US Box Office

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2-guns-movie-posterEarly last week many had expected The Smurfs 2 to take the top spot this weekend at the US box office, but in the end it had to settle for the number three spot. Topping the list was 2 Guns, with the Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington action flick taking a solid but unspectacular $27.3 million. Many have suggested that the fact the marketing concentrated on the stars and said little about the story may have held the film back.

The second weekend of The Wolverine took second spot with $21.7 million, which is a pretty steep drop of 60% from its first weekend, but it was still enough to beat Smurfs 2. The little blue men took $18.7 of the weekend and $27.7 million since if opened last Wednesday. That’s behind the $35 million of the first film and the lowest start of any of this summer’s family film. Even Turbo, which most considered a flop, started better.

It’s now going to have to hope that like the first movie its gross will hold up over the coming weeks and turn it into a true hit (and also that it makes a lot of cash internationally).

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 2nd-4th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 2 Guns $27.3 $27.3
2 The Wolverine $21.7 $95.0
3 The Smurfs 2 $18.2 $27.7
4 The Conjuring $13.6 $108.5
5 Despicable Me 2 $10.3 $326.6
6 Grown Ups 2 $8.1 $116.4
7 Turbo $6.4 $69.4
8 Red 2 $5.6 $45.1
9 The Heat $4.7 $149.5
10 Pacific Rim $4.5 $92.9

New Riddick Trailer – Vin Diesel gets hunted on a desolate planet

August 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A fresh trailer for Riddick which makes the movie look. pretty cool, Vin Diesel and director David Twohy have pulled back on the OTT sci-fi operatics of The Chronicles Of Riddick, going back towards the feeling of the original Pitch Black, although with better special effects.

Here’s the plot synopsis: ‘In the film, the infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

‘The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.’

It should hit cinemas this autumn. [Read more…]

New Machete Kills Trailer – Danny Trejo is joined by a star-studded cast

August 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve been waiting ages for Machete Kills, but now a new trailer has arrived, preparing us for the film’s October release. It still gives a good feel for the movie, which is definitely sticking to its grindhouse roots.

It’s also keen to show off the cast, which includes Danny Trejo, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Demián Bichir, Michelle Rodriguez, Lady Gaga, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, William Sadler, and Antonio Banderas.

In the movie, Machete is called on by the President to stop a Billionaire (Gibson) who’s planning to launch a missile into space.

All Is Lost Trailer – Robert Redford is lost at sea

August 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert Redford doesn’t make that many movies, but it looks like when he does he wants to hog all the screentime, as he’s pretty much the only person is All Is Lost. It also looks like he doesn’t want to learn a lot of lines, as if this trailer is anything to go by, the film isn’t exactly dialogue heavy – there’s just one word spoken in this promo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner’s intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.’

It’s out in the US in October and November 29th in the UK. [Read more…]

Jeremy Renner Is Coming Back For Another Bourne, With Anthony Peckham Writing

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jeremy-renner-the-bourne-legacy
After The Bourne Legacy barely broke $110 million at the US box office – despite costing $125 million to make – many thought that was the end of Jeremy Renner in the franchise. However it did make nearly $300 million worldwide, and while it’s taken them a while to decide what to do next, Deadline reports that Universal has hired Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) to write the next instalment, with Renner coming back to star.

There’s no news on a director. Tony Gilroy helmed Legacy, but as he also worked on the scripts for all the previous Bourne movies, so the fact he’s not onboard to write this one suggests he may not be back.

There’s no news on where the plot might go, but Universal is apparently keen to build the story of Renner’s Aaron Cross, an agent whose story ran parallel to that of Jason Bourne in the last film, when his former bosses tried to have him and the other chemically enhanced operatives killed due to the problem Jason was causing.

Some are suggested that the delay in commissioning a fifth Bourne film is due to Universal trying to woo Damon back, but as he’s not ready to return yet (he’s previously suggested he’ll only return if Paul Greegrass helms and wasn’t sure where Jason’s story would go now he’s got his memory back), they’re no moving forward with another Renner based movie.

Is Miles Teller Up To Play Reed Richards In Fantastic Four?

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Miles-TellerFor quite a while now Fox has been planning to reboot the Fantastic Four with Chronicle helmer Josh Trank at the helm. However it’s only now that they’re starting to think about casting, and if TheWrap is to be believed, Miles Teller is one of the actors in-contention for the role of Mr. Fantastic, aka Reed Richards.

Previous rumours have suggested Michael B. Jordan is being considered for Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, and Girls’ Allison Williams may end up as Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman. However there’s been no confirmation on any of these names.

While 26-year-old Footloose and 21 & Over actor Miles Teller may seem young compared to many people’s idea of Reed Richards as a slightly older man, in the comics he was indeed in his mid-20s when he, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm went on a scientific mission into space that resulted in their ship getting hit by cosmic rays and each of them gaining superpowers.

At the moment it’s difficult to know whether any of these actors will end up in the movie. Indeed it’s not even clear when the movie might shoot, but it does seem we might find out who the main cast will be soon.

A Second Inbetweeners Movie Is Confirmed – Jay, Neil, Simon & Will Are Coming Back

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-inbetweeners-movie
Normally a British film needs to find success in the US to get a sequel, but with The Inbetweeners Movie taking more than £40 million in the UK alone – and costing about a tenth of that to make – the only thing stopping us having a follow-up before now has been getting the guys back together.

Now THR reports that creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley have confirmed that a second film is on the way with plans to shoot this autumn. Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Will (Simon Bird) will all be back, although there’s no news on what the plot of this one will be.

Following up the popular Channel 4 TV series, the first film saw them head off on holiday, which inevitably resulted in all manner of hijinks. It’s safe to say there’ll be plenty more sexual japery and embarrassment in the follow-up.

Expect it in cinemas next year.

Chris Evans Set To Direct Job The 1:30 Train

Chris Evans in Cellular

Chris Evans in Cellular

Pretty much every actor wants to direct at some point and now it’s Chris Evans turn as the Captain America star has stepped up to direct, produce and star in 1:30 Train, according to Variety.

McG’s Wonderland Sound And Vision is set to finance the indie romance, with plans to shoot this autumn.

Ron Bass and Jen Smolka’s script follows the ‘the aftermath of a relationship between two strangers who meet in Manhattan and spend a night together’. Perhaps it’ll be Evans’ version of Before Sunset.

It’s certainly not a big, flashy debut, but should give Chris some great experience to see whether its worth him taking on some higher profile projects.

Jaume Collet-Serra Back In Talks To Direct Live-Action Akira

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jaume-Collet-SerraAfter years in development, 18-months ago a live action version of Akira got close enough to shooting that a production office had opened, getting ready to build the sets. Then Warner Bros. pulled the plug and it seemed the idea was completely dead.

However now it’s come back to life and they’re even trying to keep the same director, as Jaume Collet-Serra is in discussions to come back and helm the movie, according to Variety.

Warner Bros. had been exploring other options to direct, including Catfish and Paranormal Activity 4 directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, but ultimately the studio was still fond of Jaume Collet-Serra’s vision. The Unknown and Orphan director is apparently keen to sign up as he’s found an opening in his schedule, and he’s also found a different way to approach the movie and trim the $90 million budget, which is why production was halted in the first place.

Steve Kloves and Albert Torres previously worked on the script, but it isn’t known if the studio is reworking the screenplay. Garrett Hedlund had been attached to play Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang who tries to rescue his best friend Tetsuo from a mysterious supernatural experiment, with Dane DeHaan and Michael Pitt also being looked at to star. It’s no known if any of them will be brought back.
