Arnold Schwarzenegger Goes Zombie Horror With Maggie

June 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

arnold-schwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger hasn’t really done many proper horror movies, but now he’s stepping into that arena with Maggie, as Variety reports that he’s signed up to star in and produce the movie.

The film is about a young girl who has become infected with a zombie virus that has spread throughout the country. Schwarzenegger will be the girl’s father, who helps her come to terms with becoming one of the walking dead.

Chloe Moretz had been in talks to portray the title character last year, with Paddy Considine attached to the father role, but neither are involved any longer. Indeed with Arnie replacing Considine, it seems they’re going in a rather different direction.

Henry Hobson is set to direct from a screenplay by John Scott 3 (yes, he really does have a number after his name), which landed on The Black List in 2011. Filming will start in the autumn.

Along their way they encounter various fairytale characters such as Anna Kendrick’s Cinderella and the Big Bad Wolf (Johnny Depp). Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are playing Cinderella and Rapunzel’s vain princes, with Tracey Ullman playing the mother of Jack the Giant Killer, while Christine Baranski is Cinderella’s mean stepmother. Cinderella is described as a young woman trying to find her place in the world.

Rob Marshall is directing from a screenplay by James Lapine. Shooting is scheduled to begin this autumn.

Monsters University Tops The US Box Office, With World War Z A Strong Second

June 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Monsters-University-Poster1As expected Monsters University topped the US box office, taking a strong $82 million in its first three days. That’s marks Pixar’s 14th straight film to top the box office, and it’s their second highest debut ever, behind only Toy Story 3. The film is also likely to hold up well in the coming weeks, becoming yet another big hit for the studio.

While everyone had expected Monsters University to do well, there were big question marks over World War Z, due to its troubled production history and mixed reviews. In the end it’s ended up doing surprisingly well too, taking $66 million.

That’s a great start for a film some were predicting would be the flop of the summer, and indeed one of the best starts ever for a disaster film. And according to BoxOfficeMojo figures, its already the fourth highest grossing zombie film ever! Add in another $100 million from its international opening, and Paramount is well on the way to making back its $200 million budget. Indeed, there’s already talk that they’re now moving forward with the planned sequels.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of June 21st-23rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Monsters University $82.0 $82.0
2 World War Z $66.0 $66.0
3 Man Of Steel $41.2 $210.0
4 This Is The End $13.0 $5.7.7
5 Now You See Me $7.8 $94.4

New The Smurfs 2 Trailer – Neil Patrick Harris teams up with small blue things once more

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gargamel really needs to get another hobby, as his destroying smurf obsession is getting increasingly unhealthy. However it was surprisingly fun in the first of the CG/live-action mix films, and will hopefully work again in The Smurfs 2.

In the sequel Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants – and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs – Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

It hits UK cinemas on July 31st.

Crystal Fairy Trailer – Michael Cera goes to Chile

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Crystal Fairy (also known as Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus) is an intriguing looking movie, although it’s not likely to change perceptions that Michael Cera is a bit of a one-trick pony.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On a trip through Chile a boorish American expat named Jamie (Michael Cera) and three Chilean brothers plan to set off in search of the prized San Pedro cactus and its promise of beachy hallucinations. But in the previous night’s drunken stupor Jamie invites a free-spirited fellow American (Gaby Hoffmann), whose devil-may-care worldview gives them more of an adventure than any of them had bargained for.’

Anne Hathaway To Produce & Star In The Lifeboat

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many people believe there’s a curse on the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, and that while it might seem it’ll massively boost someone’ career, history has shown it either does nothing or actually results in actresses getting fewer role (just take a look through a list of the winners and you’ll see how little this ‘career high’ actually helps actresses).

anne-hathawayHowever Anne Hathaway is hoping she’ll buck the trend and stay at the top of the actress tree. THR reveals that she’s set to produce and star in an adaptation of Charlotte Rogan’s historical novel, The Lifeboat.

Working Title and Focus Features are backing the film, with William Broyles Jr. writing the book. The story is about ‘Grace Winter, who is standing trial for murder in 1914. The young woman is both a newlywed and a widow, and she recounts how she survived the sinking of the transatlantic ship Empress with the help of her new husband, only to end up in a lifeboat. The quandary, however, is that there are too many people in the boat and the survivors soon start talking about getting rid of certain people.’

No director is currently attached, but with the Lifeboat setting, expect plenty of people lining up to take on the technical challenge.

Rupert Sanders Plans The Kill List, Based On A Frederick Forsyth Novel

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rupert Sanders

Rupert Sanders

Rupert Sanders may have had success with Snow White and the Huntsman, but he got pulled off the sequel after his affair with Kristen Stewart came to light. Since then he’s flirted with a few other projects, and now he’s got a new one, as Deadline reports that he’s planning a spy thriller based on a Frederick Forsyth‘s forthcoming novel, Kill List.

The tale is said to be, ‘an intricate chess game between a brilliant Marine, an Israeli agent, a teenage hacker and a mysterious psychopathic cleric.’

Sanders has always been a fan of Forsyth, and apparently particularly liked this one after it reminded him of the Hemingway line, “There is no hunting like the hunting of men, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.”

The director commented on Forsyth’s work, “Day Of The Jackal, Odessa File and The Dogs Of War are three of the finest works of modern espionage. It is an incredible privilege to work from Forsyth’s new novel The Kill List. It is a thrilling read and frighteningly accurate. It immerses us in the shadowy worlds of terrorists, spies, private contractors, US and UK special forces. It spans an epic, international world and delves deep into the psychology of its two main characters – ‘the hunter’ – a US Special Forces Tracker and ‘the hunted’ an extreme fundamentalist terrorist. Forsyth’s depth of research and authenticity creates a vivid and frightening story – a nightmare scenario that is all too possible. He predicted new strains of civilian terrorism long before the horrible murder in Woolwich and draws out conclusions to where such actions spread like a virus.”

Cillian Murphy Going In The Heart Of The Sea With Chris Hemsworth

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cillian-murphyChris Hemsworth has been attached to In The Heart Of The Sea for a few months, and now Deadline reports that he’s got some company, as Cillian Murphy has signed up to play the second mate in the whaling tale. Benjamin Walker has also been attached to star for a while now.

Charles Leavitt wrote the script, adapted from Nathanial Philbrick’s non-fiction book of the same name, which is based on the true events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. The story revolves around a Nantucket whaling ship that was destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. Only eight crew members were rescued alive, after being lost at sea for 90 days. Walker will play first-time Captain, Pollard, with Hemsworth as his first mate, Owen Chase, and Murphy as the second mate.

Ron Howard is set to direct, with Warner Bros backing the movie. The hope is to shoot the movie this September in order the fit into Hemsworth’s busy schedule.
