Will Smith Replacing Ben Affleck In The Drama Focus

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smithIt’s all change on the Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) movie Focus, as while Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart had been due to star, they’ve now both left movie. They have found a replacement for Affleck though, with Variety reporting that Will Smith is in final talks to make the main role.

It’s Will Smith’s involvement that’s caused Kristen Stewart to leave, not because she doesn’t like Will, but due to the fact it was felt there was too big of an age gap between her and Will Smith (she’s 23, he’s 44).

The story follows a veteran con man (Will Smith) who takes an inexperienced grifter under his wing, before falling for her. Years later, they reunite and begin to complicate each others lives. Will Smith had reportedly been interested in the project for awhile, but only recently committed fully to the project.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are directing from their own original screenplay. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-phantom-menace-3d-poster3Disney has revealed just what a massive gamble it’s placing on audiences still be excited about Star Wars, as after paying $4 billion for Lucasfilm, it’s now planning on spending hundreds of millions more to release a new movie from the franchise every summer from 2015, continuing for the foreseeable future. Disney boss Alan Horn announced the news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be the first of those movies, and will launch a new trilogy that will be a continuation of the main story told in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. The current plan is to bring characters such as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia back, with JJ Abrams directing. The main trilogy will alternate every summer with standalone films looking at other parts of the Star Ward universe, the first of which will be released in 2016.

An young Han Solo movie and a film about Boba Fett are rumoured to be in the works, although there’s been no official announcement about there. It is also suspected that Yoda and Jabba the Hutt may get their own movies.

New Byzantium Trailer – Saoirse Ronan & Gemma Arterton turn a little bit vampire

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Byzantium definitely look intriguing, even if it met a bit of a mixed response on its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival at the end of last year. However this new trailer look pretty good, with Neil Jordan going back to the world of bloodsuckers for the first time since Interview With The Vampire.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) is a precocious girl with a bent for storytelling. A natural introvert, her idea of a good time is to put pen to paper and reflect on her inner life. Her “sister” Clara (Gemma Arterton) is the complete opposite: extroverted and sexual, she struts around in stilettos and skin-tight garb, attracting hungry male gazes wherever she goes. Both carry secrets from deep in their shared past — all 200 years of it — which bubbles to the surface as Jordan wends his way through the twists and turns of the plot.

‘It turns out that Clara was involved in a passionate love affair during the Napoleonic Wars, while at the same time Eleanor was abandoned as a child. In the present, both seek to preserve their secret from their unsuspecting new companions. Eleanor falls for a sweet young waiter (Caleb Landry Jones), while Clara settles on a homey, unsuspecting man (Daniel Mays) who has just come into an inheritance: the Byzantium Hotel, which has seen better days. The fun begins as Eleanor and Clara shack up in the hotel, feeding off their victims while attempting to stay one step ahead of their pursuers, who are hot on the duo’s trail after Clara rather violently disposes of a particularly seedy pickup.’

The movie, which also stars Jonny Lee Miller, Sam Riley, and Tom Hollander, will be out in the UK on May 31st. [Read more…]

First Look At Shawn Ashmore’s Iceman In X-Men: Day Of Future Past

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shawn-ashmore-x-men-days-of-future-pastIt’s an X-Men mash-up in Days Of Future Past, with many of the cast of the original mutant trilogy starring alongside the First Class actors. That includes Shawn Ashmore, who played Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, in the earlier days, and is now back on set for Days Of Future Past.

We have the proof of that now, as director Bryan Singer has tweeted a pic of Ashmore in his X-Men leather from the shoot. He’s also covered in little orange stickers, suggesting that whatever shot they’re doing involves a bit of motion-capture special effects.

The film is a bit of a time-travel tale, with the First Class cast having to prevent an assassination that will cause all mutants to be rounded up into internment camps if it goes ahead. The film’s due out July 2014.

Great New Posters For 300 Rise Of An Empire, Oldboy & R.I.P.D.

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

300-rise-of-an-empire-poster1
New posters have emerged for three films that have slightly got lost in the shuffle as the studio concentrate on their biggest summer tentpole flicks. Even so, there are a lot of people out there waiting for 300: Rise Of An Empire, R.I.P.D. and Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy.

300 director Zack Snyder tweeted the Rise Of An Empire poster (he’s producing and writing this time around, with Noam Murro directing). The follow-up stars Sullivan Stapleton as General Themistokles, who attempts to unite all of Greece in battle against the evil Persian ruler Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). The film hits cinemas this August.

R.I.P.D. follows a recently killed beat cop (Ryan Reynolds) who joins the Rest In Peace Department, where undead police patrol the underworld. He agrees to 100 years service in return for a shot at getting the guy who killed him, and is teamed with an old gunslinger (Jeff Bridges), who’s been dead hundreds of years. Robert Luketic directs, with a July US release date set (there’s no official UK date yet).

Oldboy follows an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson also star. It’ll be in cinemas this autumn.

Nathan Fillion is playing Johnny Worthington, a horned beast who’s the arrogant president of Roar Omega Roar, a fraternity at the campus that enlists notable scarer students. Krasinski will be ‘Frightening’ Frank McCay, a member of the star scaring team at Monsters, Inc, and an inspiration for both Mike and Sulley. Hunt meanwhile will be voicing Karen Graves, Mike’s grade school teacher.

The news comes at the same time at some ‘Greek Week’ fraternity and sorority posters have been released from the movie, which you can see above and below. In the film the different groups apparently come together for friendly competition. We’d

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.’

Apes Director Rupert Wyatt Up For Noir Thriller Night Film

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rupert-WyattEver since Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes director Rupert Wyatt dropped out of helming the sequel, he’s flirted with various projects, most notably trying to get a movie version of Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong off the ground. Now he’s added another movie to his development list, Night Film, according to THR.

Michael Rooker Joins Guardians Of The Galaxy As Yondu

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-rookerMichael Rooker has had a bit of career boost recently thanks to his role in The Walking Dead. Now he’s heading for film as he has signed on to star in Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy as Yondu, according to Deadline.

The character first appeared in a 1969 issue of the comic book Marvel Super-Heroes. He hails from the Zatoan tribe on Centauri IV, the first planet to be colonised outside of the Sun’s solar system in the 29th Century. Yondu does not possess any super-human abilities, but he is a skilled hunter with a bow and arrow, and has a mystical ‘sixth sense’ that gives him limited empathic abilities with other life forms.

He was one of the founding members of the Guardians of the Galaxy and in the comics Yondu has blue skin and sports a feathery Mohawk, but it’s not clear if that will follow through into the movie.

Michael Rooker joins Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Zoe Saldana as Gamora. James Gunn is directing from his own screenplay, based on the Marvel comic books. Shooting will kick off in the UK later this year, with an August 1st, 2014 release set.
