Damon Wayans Jr And Jake Johnson Say Let’s Be Cops

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

damon-wayans-jrDamon Wayans Jr has spent the last couple of years starring in the sitcom Happy Endings, but now he’s hoping to follow in his father’s comedy movie footsteps with Let’s Be Cops. Deadline reports that Wayans and Jake Johnson have signed up to star in Let’s Be Cops.

Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) will direct, based on a script he co-wrote with writing partner Nick Thomas. The movie ‘is about two best friends looking for a little more out of life. They impersonate cops for kicks, but when they unknowingly mess with a real mobster, the game gets real.’

Wayans Jr. has previously popped up in small roles in the likes of The Other Guys and various projects his relatives have been involved in, but this will be his first starring role. There’s no news on when the movie might shoot.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Confirmed As A Stand-Alone Movie Set 95% In Space

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Phase II of Marvel’s cinematic universe kicks off this summer with Iron Man 3, followed by Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Avengers 2. Now Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has been talking to SFX about the movies and Guardians Of The Galaxy in particular, which is the unknown quantity in the line-up.

When asked whether ‘cosmic’ would be a ‘fair description’ of Phase II, he said, “I wouldn’t say that in a broad sense. The Thor film and the Guardians of the Galaxy film certainly are cosmic. Guardians and Thor will take the brunt of the cosmic side of the universe, particularly Guardians, which is 95% in space.”

He also confirmed that Guardians will be a stand-alone film, although leaving things over for crossovers in the future. “It’s much more of a standalone film,” he says. “It takes place in the same universe [as Avengers]. And when we’ve been on the other side of that universe in other movies, you might see those characteristics in Guardians, but the Avengers are not involved with what’s happening out there at this time.”

Feige also promises the movie will dig deeper, saying “I think Iron Man 3 shows the other side of Phase 2, which is delving deeper into the characters. Throwing them on a much more personal journey. And Captain America will showcase… What’s exciting to me about Cap – sort of about Iron Man 3 too if you look at it – is it’s tonally almost like a different genre. Shane Black has described Iron Man 3 as a Tom Clancy sort of political thriller, which I like a lot. We hired our directors on Cap because they loved our explanation that we really want to make a ’70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie. Just like with the first film – we got Joe Johnston because we said, ‘We want to do a ’40s World War Two movie masquerading as a big superhero movie.’ I love that we’re doing a sequel to a film that’s a completely different genre than the first film. I think that’s fun. And the comics do it all the time.”

Guardians Of The Galaxy is due out August 14th 2014.

Jesse L Martin Takes Over From Lenny Kravitz In Marvin Gaye Biopic

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jesse-l-martinThere have been quite a lot of major biopics of Marvin Gaye planned over the years, but none of them have made it to the big screen. However Julien Temple (The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle, The Filth And The Fury, Glastonbury, Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten) has been trying to remedy that with Sexual Healing. Recently it was reported he was trying to get Lenny Kravitz to play the singer.

Now it seems Kravitz is out and Deadline reports that he’s likely to be replaced by Jesse L. Martin. While best known for starring in Law & Order, Martin made his name in Broadway musicals, most famously in the original cast of Rent (he also appeared in the film version), so he could be a good fit for the Motown legend.

The film will look at the last years of Marvin Gaye’s life from 1981. The period saw huge success for the singer, with the likes of Sexual Healing hitting the top of the charts, however in 1984 after an argument with his parents, Marvin’s father shot and killed him (with a revolver the singer had given him as a present, no less).

Gaye also had issues with alcohol and drug abuse, but it his manager helping to get him clean (and sort out his taxes) led to his early 80s success. However, Marvin was found to have cocaine and angel dust in his system when he died, which many have suggested is the reason why the argument got so out of control.

Temple plans to start shooting Sexual Healing later this month in Europe.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire Effie Trinket & Caesar Flickman Capitol Portraits

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After the success of The Hunger Games, there’s a massive amount of excitement in some quarters for the follow-up, Catching Fire. Now a couple of ‘Capitol Portraits’ have surfaced, featuring Caesar Flickman (Stanley Tucci) and Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), done in oil painting style.

The pics come via a Facebook App, that will be releasing more pics over the next day or two.

Here’s the synopsis for the film: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

The film’s due out November 22nd.

Christian Bale Returning As Batman For Justice League, With Chris Nolan Producing?

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dark-knight-rises-bd-review-slideUntil there’s anything even vaguely official, I’d take this one with a pinch of salt, but Latino Review reports that suggests Christopher Nolan has agreed to take on producer duties on the long-planned Justice League movie. They also suggest Christian Bale may return as Batman and Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman.

In recent months Justice League has been in trouble, with reports that Warner hated Will Beall’s script and that they would have to start again from scratch. Along with that issue, there have been suggestion the scope of the project is scaring many at DC. While they want to catch up to Marvel’s cinematic universe, they’re also aware that if Justice League turns out to be a disaster, it could severely harm several key characters’ chances on the big screen. Many believe that Justice League’s fate rests solely on whether this summer’s Man of Steel becomes a major hit.

With so many worries and uncertainties, one of the few things that would be likely to give everyone a bit of confidence would be getting Chris Nolan on-board in some capacity. If Latino Review is correct, he’s now agreed to do that, shepherding the project to the screen just as he did with Man of Steel.

This means that Christian Bale may return as Batman, even though he stated multiple times that The Dark Knight Rises would be his last turn as Bruce Wayne. That said, the actor did hint in a recent interview that if Christopher Nolan came to him with another Batman story, he might be interested in donning the cowl once again.

It is also being said that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder will produce Justice League alongside Christopher Nolan, and that he may possibly end up directing Justice League. The suggestion is that Christopher Nolan is going to be developing/shepherding all of Warner’s superhero projects from now on, in a similar way to what Mark Millar is doing at Fox, and Joss Whedon at Marvel. Nothing has been confirmed by the studio, so consider this information a slightly dubious rumor for now.

Rebecca Hall Joins Johnny Depp & Paul Bettany In Transcendence

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rebecca-hallLast week Johnny Depp confirmed his involvement in Dark Knight cinematographer Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, Transcendence, and an April shoot start was set. That means Pfister hasn’t got much time to get everything ready, so he’s now busy filling out the cast.

Paul Bettany signed up last week and now Collider reports that Rebecca Hall (The Town) is also set to star in the movie. It won’t be her first time working with Pfister, as he was the cinematographer on The Prestige, which Hall starred in.

The screenplay, written by Jack Paglen, is still wrapped in secrecy. However, it’s rumored that the film is about a group of scientists experimenting with the idea of the technological singularity – the moment where a computer becomes so advanced that it begins to learn on its own and no longer needs an operator. There’s no news on who any of the actors will play.

The film is currently set for release on April 25th, 2014.

Girl Most Likely (Imogene) Trailer – Darren Criss gets shirtless in Kristen Wiig’s latest

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Kristen Wiig’s latest, Girl Most Likely (aka Imogene) debuted last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it doesn’t reach the US until July and no UK date is currently set at all. Nevertheless we’ve now got a trailer, giving us a look at the quirky indie comedy.

Wiig plays Imogene, who stages a fake suicide in the hope of winning back her ex. However her plan works a bit too well, as everyone thinks she really was trying to kill herself and so they put her in the custody of her gambling addict mother (Annette Bening). Imogene is thrust back into a life she hoped she’d left behind, but discovers that perhaps the things she’s shunned are just what she needs.

Plus she meets Glee’s Darren Criss, who very kindly gets shirtless for us in the trailer, which certainly ensures this is worth a look. [Read more…]

Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie Trailer

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Jay & Silent Bob got their own live action movie a few years ago, they’re now returning in animated form in a movie made for the incredibly low price of $69,000 dollars. As a result it’s not the most sophisticated cartoon visuals we’ve ever seen, but as this new trailer shows, it could be rather fun.

The film sees the stoner duo becoming their superhero alter-egos, Bluntman and Chronic and heading off to fight crime. As you’d expect, there’s plenty of rude humour and dick jokes galore.

As with Red State, Kevin Smith is taking the movie on tour in the US starting in April (and considering how much the movie cost to make, it should be very profitable), alongside Jay himself, Jason Mewes. You can find out more about that here. There’s no news on when it might arrive in the UK though.

Scott Waugh Takes On Ensemble Robin Hood Tale Merry Men

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robin-Hood-Errol-FlynnWhile the weak box office opening of Jack The Giant Slayer may give Hollywood a bit of pause over future fairytale/fantasy movies, at the moment there’s no letup in the line of film in development all over Hollywood taking on classic family-friendly tales. There are already a couple of Robin Hood movies in the works, and now Deadline reports that Dreamworks is planning another, called Merry Men.

Scott Waugh (Act Of Valor, the upcoming Need For Speed) is attached to direct, with Brad Ingelsby writing the screenplay. The title is a hint this won’t just be about the green-tighted hero robbing from the rich to give to the poor, and will instead have a more Ocean’s 11 vibe, giving more time to Robin’s cohorts, such as Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and Alan-A-Dale.

As Waugh still has to shoot Need For Speed, it’s very eearly days for Merry Men, so don’t expect it for a few years yet.
