Alex Proyas Directing Joe Golem & The Drowning City

Constantin Film has picked up film rights for Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden’s supernatural graphic novel Joe Golem and the Drowning City, with I Robot helmer Alex Proyas set to direct, according to Deadline.

The story is set in 1970’s Manhattan, where earthquakes and rising sea levels left the city under water fifty years earlier. It follows a 14-year-old girl, who is forced to go on the run after her magician friend, Felix Orlov, gets kidnapped by a group of strange men wearing gas masks and rubber suits. She escapes only to find herself in the company of Joe Golem, a mysterious man who does not remember his past.

Alex Proyas is writing and directing the film . It isn’t known when it might shoot, but we do know that it will be shot in the director’s native Austrailia. Let’s hope Proyas has more luck with this one than he has with other recent projects, such as his ambitious take on Paradise Lost, which got canned just weeks before it was supposed to start shooting.

Joe Cornish Takes On Graphic Novel Adaptation Rust

Joe Cornish has come a long way from Adam & Joe, with Attack The Block setting him up as a director to look out for. Now Fox has hired Joe Cornish to helm the graphic novel adaptation Rust, from a script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, We Bought A Zoo).

The story is being compared to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, centring on a struggling family of farmers who are trying to stay afloat in the aftermath of a devastating world war. However the family’s lives are turned upside-down by the arrival of a jetpack-wearing boy, who crashes into their barn while being chased by a giant old war robot.

It’s not known if this will be Cornish’s next film. He also has Snow Crash in development and has been flirting with a few other things as well. (Source: THR)

Josh Trank Confirmed For Fantastic Four

Several months ago it was rumoured that 20th Century Fox was in talks with Chornicle helmer Josh Trank for its planned reboot of Fantastic Four, but it’s only now that the studio has confirmed Trank has indeed signed up to helm the movie.

The idea is to give Fantastic Four a completely new tone and feel compared to their most recent film adventures, presumably taking them in the grittier direction of many recent superhero movies. Fox hopes to begin production on Fantastic Four after shooting wraps on two more superhero projects, The Wolverine and the X-Men: First Class Sequel.

In related yet opposite news, director David Slade has dropped out of the Fox’s Daredevil reboot. The studio is said to be keen on the screenplay, most recently worked on by David James Kelly, but the director couldn’t fit it into his schedule, due to his commitment to direct the Hannibal pilot. Fox has to get production started this fall, or they risk the rights reverting back to Marvel Studios. (Source: Deadline)

Ed Helms to Play Rusty Griswold in Vacation Reboot

The planned reboot/continuation of the Vacation is series is moving forward, with the news that Ed Helms has signed up to play Rusty Griswold in the movie, according to Variety. While many hoped that Johnny Galecki (Christmas Vacation) or Anthony Michael Hall (the original 1983 Vacation) would return to the role, that’s not going to happen.

And as Rusty has been played by a different person in each Vacation film (he’s also been Ethan Embry, Jason Lively and Travis Greer), it’s almost fitting we’ll get another new one for this movie.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, writers of 2011’s Horrible Bosses, are set to direct from a screenplay that they penned together. The story will follow Rusty as he embarks on a family summer vacation of his own, that is reminiscent of the one he took 30 years ago to the day with his father, Clark Griswold.

It is rumored that both Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo will appear in the film in some capacity, but that has yet to be confirmed by New Line Cinemas or Warner Bros. The film should hit cinemas next year.

Walter Hill Directing Baby Jane Remake

Walter Hill (48 Hrs, The Warriors) has signed on to develop and direct a remake of the 1962 classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? with The Aldrich Company, according to Deadline.

The original classic starred Bette Davis as Jane Hudson, a former child star who lives an isolated life with her sister, Blanche (Joan Crawford), after a tragic accident ended Blache’s glittering movie career and left her crippled. The film is almost as famous for the fact it paired up renowned enemies Crawford and Davis as it is for the movie itself.

Hill commented on the remake, “The two equal leads demand great performers, that is a given. The intensity of the Gothic storyline makes a reconfiguration of the drama still a potentially searing experience. The idea is to make a modern film without modernizing the period. It needs to resonate the golden age of Hollywood.”

Walter Hill will write the screenplay and direct. The original director, Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen), retained the rights, which are now controlled by The Aldrich Company, run by his daughter Adell Aldrich.

It isn’t known when it might shooot.

Goats Trailer – David Duchovny has one hell of a beard

Goats seems like one of those eccentric films that could either be great fun or just ridiculous, and from this trailer it’s difficult to tell which. In the film, Ellis (Graham Phillips) is the most adult member of his eccentric family at 15 years old. His mom (Vera Farmiga) is a New Age hippie that spends all of her time working on self-help rituals with her hustler boyfriend (Justin Kirk). His dad (Ty Burrell) left home years ago and is more focused on his new wife (Keri Russell) and family. And then there’s Goat Man (David Duchovny), the goat-herding sage who has lived in their pool house since Ellis was a child, teaching him the meaning of stability, commitment, and expanding one’s mind.

New Gangster Squad International Trailer

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. Gangster Squad is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time. It’s due out November 9th.

Olympus Has Fallen For Melissa Leo & Rick Yune

The battle of the White House taken over by terrorists movies is heating up, with barely a day going by without news of a new actor being added to the cast of either Olympus Has Fall of White House Down. Both films essentially have the same story, with bad guys taking control of the White House and Secret Service agents needing to take it back.

Yesterday James Woods signed up for White House Down, and today it’s the turn of Olympus Has Fallen, with THR reporting that Melissa Leo and Rick Yune have joined the cast. The movie, directed by Antoine Fuqua goes into production this week, with Gerard Butler in the lead role.

Leo is in talks to play a tough secretary of Defense who cracks when tortured. Yune meanwhile will play the villain of the movie, a North Korean posing as a South Korean ministerial aide who is described as a sociopathic monster. Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Cole Hauser and Radha Mitchell also star.

Eli Roth May Take On Russell Crowe Dracula Tale Harker

Eli Roth hasn’t made a movie since Hostel II, and while he’s developed a lot of projects, nothing has actually come to fruition, other than films he’s written or produced. Now he may have found a new movie, and unusually for Roth, it’s a film that he hasn’t originated himself. Deadline reports that he’s in talks to direct the Dracula based movie Harker, which already has Russell Crowe attached to star.

Crowe and Roth have a bit of history, as Russell stars in the upcoming The Man With The Iron Fists, which Eli co-wrote. The Aussie actor is attached to play Dracula in the movie, which reimagines Jonathan Harker as a Scotland Yard detective. The idea is apparently that Harker will track Dracula in the movie, but the set-up could potentially allow him to go after other terrifying figures in sequels.

It”s still fairly early days though, as Roth is busy working with Crowe on the story, and once that’s sorted out they’ll move forward. The plan is to shoot the movie sometime next year.

Channing Tatum In Talks To Be Evel Knievel

He’s heating up UK cinemas today with the release of Magic Mike, but Channing Tatum is busy looking to the future, as THR reports that he’s in talks to play Evel Knievel in a new biopic. Tatum will also produce the films with his Iron Horse Entertainment partner Reid Carolin, who will write the screenplay.

Born Robert Craig Knievel, the stuntman became a household name in the 1970s for his nationally televised motorcycle jumps. Ever the showman, Knievel became recognizable for his use of a Stars-and-Stripes getup and the fact he broke 433 bones. He died in 2007 at the age of 69.

Tatum isn’t the first actor to assume the famed thrill-seeker. George Hamilton starred in the 1971 film titled Evel Knievel, while Knievel himself toplined the 1977 film Viva Knievel! The new movie will be based on Stuart Barker’s 2008 book, Life of Evel.
