Tom Cruise has had a busy week. That’s because it was his 50th birthday yesterday. As I’m sure you’re aware, absolutely nothing else of interest has happened to him in the last few days, and there have been no rumours swirling around as to why that thing didn’t happen. So it’s a good time to release the trailer for Jack Reacher, as nobody is going to be concentrating on anything else about Cruise! The movie, which is out December 21st, sees Tom as Lee Childs’ ex–military investigator, Jack Reacher. He looks into the case of a trained military sniper who shot five random victims, an investigator that gets ever deeper and darker. As the trailer proves, it looks like Cruise is in intense mode for this one.

First Official Pic Of Naomi Watts In Diana
With production starting on Diana (previously known as Caught In Flight), images of Naomi Watts on the set have popped up online, but now the first official shot has been released, showing that the actress is a dead ringer for the princess.
Here’s the press release announcing the start of shooting: London, July 3 2012: Ecosse Films (NOWHERE BOY, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, MRS BROWN, BECOMING JANE) has today announced that their highly anticipated ‘Diana’ project has this week commenced shooting.
Leading the cast is British-born Academy®-Award nominated actress Naomi Watts (J. EDGAR, FAIR GAME, 21 GRAMS) as the eponymous and iconic Princess.
DIANA – previously reported under its working title of CAUGHT IN FLIGHT – will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Academy®-Award nominated for DOWNFALL), and is based on a screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys. Joining Naomi Watts will be fellow Brits Naveen Andrews as Dr Hasnat Khan, Douglas Hodge and Juliet Stevenson.
From the set of the film, Ms.Watts said: “I’m excited and honoured to be playing the role of a truly remarkable woman, who had such a positive and profound impact in so many ways.”
DIANA is a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the final two years of her life. It charts how finding true personal happiness allowed her to achieve her defining successes, as she evolved into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.
Locations for the 9-week shoot will include Croatia, Mozambique, as well as various locations in and around London and the South of England.
Speaking today, Ecosse Films’ Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae stated: “We are very excited to be working with such a talented and creative team both in front of and behind the camera. Everyone’s aim is to produce a truly insightful and compassionate study of Diana’s later years.”
International sales on DIANA are being handled by Embankment Films, with all major international territories pre-sold (ex USA.)
DIANA is produced by Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae of Ecosse and will be co-produced by Matt Delargy, James Saynor (also of Ecosse) and Paul Ritchie. Executive producers are Tim Haslam and Mark Woolley. Journalist and documentary filmmaker Kate Snell is acting as Associate Producer.
First Look At Charlie Hunnam & Rinko Kikuchi In Pacific Rim
With Comic-Con just a week away, EW is trying to get people excited about the movies that will be making an appearance at the San Diego event. The latest issue includes a pic from Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro’s film which sees men controlling giant robots going up against monsters that have arrived through a spatial rift.
STYD has scanned the image, which you can see above, which gives us our first look at Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, who haversome full-on battle armour, and are standing in front of machines that are presumably the way they interface with the giant robots.
Samuel L Jackson & Angela Bassett Up For Black Nativity
Samuel L. Jackson may be 63, but he sure ain’t slowing down and continues to be in pretty much every movie going. Now he’s got another one, as he’s signed on to star in Black Nativity, along with Angela Bassett. Jennifer Hudson is also likely to star, although she hasn’t signed a deal yet.
Kasi Lemmons is directing and adapting Langston Hughes’ 1961 gospel Broadway musical, which reframes the biblical story as the dreams of a black teenager. The film sees the troubled Baltimore teen being sent to stay with the grandparents he’s never met in Harlem. Through his grandfather’s Christmas Eve sermon and a stylised, dream-sequence retelling of the classic Nativity story, he learns about the importance of faith and family.
Jackson and Bassett are set to play the estranged grandparents, Rev. Clarence and Aretha Cobbs. Hudson will be the boy’s mother, who hasn’t spoken to her father since they had a falling out after she got pregnant. Jackson will likely play multiple characters during the Nativity sequence.
Sounds like it could be an interesting one. There’s no news on when it might shoot, although what’s the betting it will open at Christmas (probably in 2013)? (Source: Variety)
Iron Man 3 Concept Art Arrives
Just in time for the Independence Day holiday, Marvel has released a piece of concept art for Iron Man 3, giving us our first look at what appears to be the Extremis Suit. The artwork, dubbed ‘Caged’ will be handed out to fans who visit the Marvel booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2012 next week.
If it is the Extremis Suit, it certainly fits into the rumours that the plot of the film will surround nanotechnology. In the comic, the Extremis amous essentially turns Stark into a cyborg, allowing his suit to come out and be built up around him at any time. Iron Man 3 is due out on May 13th, 2013.
Crispin Glover Checks In To Motel Alongside Cusack & De Niro
Crispin Glover has joined the cast of the thriller Motel for director David Grovic, according to THR. Martin Klebba (Project X) has also signed on to the project, which already has the likes of Robert De Niro and John Cusack set to star.
Motel is about a hitman (John Cusack) who is hired by a famous mob boss (Robert De Niro). The assassin realises he has to fight his way through a cadre of other dangerous people who were also hired by the mobster to convene at a shady motel, and then teams up with a woman to plan his escape. Dominic Purcell, Sticky Fingaz, Rebecca Da Costa, and David Shumbris also star. It isn’t known exactly who Crispin Glover or Martin Klebba’s roles, but it’s easy to imagine Glover as a crazed killer.
Grovic is directing from a screenplay by James Russo, which was rewritten by the director and Paul Conway. Production is already underway, although no plans for release were announced.
Sharon Stone Celebrating Mother’s Day
Just yesterday we reported that Andie MacDowell and her daughter has joined Susan Sarandon, her daughter, and Christina Ricci in the ensemble drama, Mother’s Day. Now they’ve got company, as Variety reports that Sharon Stone has signed on for the movie as well.
This film is about six mothers who examine the relationships with their daughters over the Mother’s Day weekend. No details are known for Sharon Stone’s character, although presumably she will play one of the moms.
Paul Duddridge is directing from his own original screenplay. It isn’t certain when it will shoot.
Jena Malone Joins The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Last week it appeared Lionsgate had decided on actress Zoe Aggeliki to play Johanna Mason in the highly-anticipated sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but it appears that’s fallen through, as THR reports that Sucker Punch’s Jena Malone is in early talks for the role.
Johanna Mason is a loner who is said to have no family and friends back home in District 7. She tries to form an alliance with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) during the 75th Hunger Games, where the field is comprised of former winners. The character is known for her proficiency with an axe, and for her ability to manipulate others into trusting her. However she has a very prickly relationship with Katniss.
Francis Lawrence is directing from a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt. Production is slated to begin in late September.
Quartet Trailer – Take a look at Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut
It’s interesting that after a 50-year acting career, Dustin Hoffman would decide that his directorial debut should be about British retirees, but considering the success of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, perhaps he’s onto something. Based on Ronald Harwood’s play, the film is about Cecily (Pauline Collins), Reggie (Tom Courteney) and Wilfred (Billy Connolly), who are in a home for retired opera singers. Every year, on October 10the, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday and they take part. Jean (Maggie Smith), who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on… and it does. The film is currently due out in the UK on January 4th, 2013.
The Sessions Trailer – A disabled John Hawkes tries to lose his virginity
Don’t be surprised if John Hawkes’ name comes up during awards season for The Sessions. Based on the autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien, The Sessions tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined – at age 38 – to lose his virginity. With the help of his therapists and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality and meets a sex therapist (Helen Hunt).
