Jim Carrey Out Of Dumb and Dumber 2

June 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last October, is was revealed that Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly were planning Dumb and Dumber 2 (apparently going under the working title Dumb and Dumber To), which at the time had both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels set to return as Lloyd and Harry.

However Jim Carrey has left the project, due to New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. showing a, “lack of enthusiasm” for the follow-up, according to ET Online. Here’s what Carrey had to say, through his publicist. “I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it’s implied in the title.”

The Farrelly brothers have had casting roadblocks in the past involving the funnyman. He was set to star alongside Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro in The Three Stooges before the project fell apart. Of course, it will be a lot harder to re-cast a role like Lloyd Christmas for a sequel, especially for a comedy as popular as Dumb and Dumber. It’s also not clear what a ‘lack of enthusiasm’ means, although suggests perhaps the studio didn’t want to pay what Carrey was asking.

Sex Drive writers Sean Anders and John Morris wrote the screenplay for the Farrelly’s to direct from. It’s not clear yet if this casting departure will mean the end of the sequel or not.

New Trailer For Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master

June 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When the first footage debuted at Cannes, we got our first brief look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Now a new trailer has arrived, which makes the film seem oddly intense. The movie is a 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as ‘the Master’ (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), whose faith-based organisation begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) who becomes his right-hand man. The movie is loosely based on the birth of Scientology, although the company behind the movie has already reached out to the ‘religion’ to say they have nothing to worry about. Although with Scientology sometimes being a bit like an attack dog, we’ll have to see if they go on the offensive or not.

V/H/S Red Band Trailer

June 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The horror anthology is a bit of a throwback to the 80s, so it’s fitting this new one is held together by VHS tapes. A POV, found footage horror film from the perspective of America’s top genre filmmakers. A group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house in the countryside and acquire a rare tape. Upon searching the house, the guys are confronted with a dead body, a hub of old televisions and an endless supply of cryptic footage, each video stranger than the last – and each helmed by a different genre filmmaker, including Ti West and Adam Wingard.

Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie Character Shots Debut

June 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A slew of new character images have debuted from Tim Burton’s upcoming Frankenweenie, which certainly keep with the idea of this being a loving riff on 1930s horror movies. We’ve got the pics below, along with the character descriptions.

First off here’s the synopsis: ‘From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.’ It’s due in UK cinemas October 17th, 2012.

SPARKY – Sparky is a devoted and playful bull terrier whose sense of curiosity is matched only by his beloved owner, Victor. Sparky enjoys chasing after balls and being the star of Victor’s homemade movies. He exudes tons of energy and enthusiasm, which even his untimely death doesn’t diminish.

VICTOR (voiced by Charlie Tahan) – Victor Frankenstein is a clever and industrious 10-year-old boy who is inspired by science. He lives with his parents and dog, Sparky, in the town of New Holland. Victor immerses himself in making films and inventing in his attic workshop. When Sparky dies in a car accident, Victor uses scientific ingenuity to bring him back to life.

MR. & MRS. FRANKENSTEIN (Voiced by Catherine O’Hara & Martin Short ) – Mr. Frankenstein is a travel agent, friendly and social, who likes to dispense roundabout advice to his son. He is proud of Victor’s accomplishments, but is concerned he doesn’t have any friends other than Sparky. He would prefer his son be more social and encourages him to join the baseball team. Mr. Frankenstein has a playful and loving relationship with his wife, Victor’s mom.

Mrs. Frankenstein is a loving and supportive mother who encourages her son’s scientific pursuits, even when her kitchen appliances end up in his attic lab. She is an avid reader and loves to watch movies with her husband and enjoys the company of her family and her books.

ELSA VAN HELSING (voiced by Winona Ryder) – Elsa Van Helsing is a soulful and somber classmate of Victor. She lives next door to him with her tyrant uncle, Mayor Burgemeister, who forces her to be this year’s “Little Dutch Girl” at the town’s celebration of Dutch Day. Elsa also has a beloved pet, her poodle Persephone, and truly empathizes with Victor when he loses Sparky.

PERSEPHONE – Persephone is a perfectly groomed black poodle with an enormously large poof of hair on her head. She is curious and flirtatious with Sparky and fiercely loyal to Elsa, her owner. When Persephone and Sparky first meet in the backyard, the attraction is instantaneous and electrifying.

TOSHIAKI (voiced by James Hiroyuki Liao) – Toshiaki is over-achieving and mega-competitive. He delights in beating Victor at his own game and like a power-hungry, mad scientist, Toshiaki will stop at nothing to win the top prize in the school’s science fair—even if it means stealing Victor’s ideas to do it.

BOB (voiced by Robert Capron) – Bob is a momma’s boy who is the brawn to Toshiaki’s brains. He is agreeable and never mean-spirited, but on the flip side he’s easily led and gullible. Bob follows Toshiaki everywhere, but is the first one to run to Victor for help when he gets in over his head.

BOB’S MOM (voiced by Conchata Ferrell) – Bob’s Mom is a plump, suburban housewife who is prone to panic and hysteria when things go awry. She has very simple, stereotypical views on life, which she isn’t shy about sharing with the community. She dotes on her son Bob and believes her actions, though often misguided, are in his best interest.

Paul Verhoeven Takes On Jesus Christ With Roger Avary Scripting

June 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pulp Fiction and Beowulf writer Roger Avary has signed up to script Paul Verhoeven’s planned biblical biopic, Jesus of Nazareth. He will adapt the book of the same name, written by Paul Verhoeven, Susan Massotty and Rob Van Scheers.

It’s a bit of a departure for the RoboCop and Basic Instinct helmer, but the book was written after the director immersed himself in the history of Jesus for nearly 20 years. He believes that the immaculate conception and resurrection of Jesus did not happen. An even more controversial suggestion in the book is that Verhoeven believes that Mary was raped by a Roman soldier, which was common at the time. He portrays Jesus as a radical prophet who performed exorcisms and hoped to find Heaven on earth.

Verhoeven recently commented, “If you look at the man, it’s clear you have a person who was completely innovative in the field of ethics. My own passion for Jesus came when I started to realize that. It’s not about miracles, it’s about a new set of ethics, an openness towards the world, which was anathema in a Roman-dominated world. I believe he was crucified because they felt that politically, he was a dangerous person whose following was getting bigger and bigger. Jesus’ ideals are about the utopia of human behaviour, about how we should treat each other, how we should step into the shoes of our enemy.”

However, bringing the ideas to film are likely to prove controversial, as many get angry about anything that strays from the biblical text (or at least the common perception of it), and which questions Jesus’ divinity. There’s no info on when it might shoot (although it already has financing), but prepare for controversy and much harumphing. (Source: Deadline)

Fox Signs Up For A Sesame Street Movie

June 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the success of The Muppets, 20th Century Fox has decided it would like to get into the Jim Henson-created puppet business, as THR report the studio is planning to develop a big screen adaptation of Sesame Street. The studio picked up movie rights and brought on veteran show writer Joey Mazzarino to provide the screenplay.

The educational children’s program debuted in 1969 on PBS and features memorable characters such as Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster and Elmo. Shawn Levy is producing, although at the moment the Real Steel helmer isn’t set to direct.

Sesame Street already has two big screen movies under its belt, with 1985’s Follow That Bird. and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland in 1999. There’s no news on when this new film might hit cinemas.

Kit Harington Up For How to Train Your Dragon 2

June 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kit Harrington got a major profile boost thanks to Game Of Thrones, but his film career was slightly stymied when his title role in Arthur & Lancelot was put on hold. Now though he’s getting animated, as Variety reports that he’s taken a role in How To Train Your Dragon 2.

There aren’t too many details on the role he’ll play in the follow-up, other than he’ll be a ‘villainous warrior’. We don’t have any details of the plot of the movie either. The film will continue the story of the hit 2010 movie, which featured the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, T.J. Miller, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Kristen Wiig.

Dean DeBlois is returning as both writer and director after serving similar duties alongside Chris Sanders on the first movie.
