April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago it as revealed that amongst the long list of projects Hangover helmer Todd Phillips was thinking of directing, was an adaptation of Tony D’Souza’s novel, Mule. That’s now moved closer to the screen, as Deadline reports that Warner has hired Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass (Jeff Who Lives at Home, Cyrus) to write the screenplay for Mule.

Tony D’Souza’s novel follows a young couple who hit hard economic times just as one of them becomes pregnant. In need of money, the become marijuana ‘mules’, transporting weed across the country for some fast cash. However what starts out as a single drug run turns into something more, as the couple move up the ranks of narcotics dealing.

While the movie now has a screenwriter, there’s still no news on when it might shoot.

Adam McKay Directing Uptown Saturday Night

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adam McKay normally only directs movie starring his professional partner, Will Ferrell, but now it seems he’s thinking of leaving Will behind for a bit, as he’s in negotiations to direct a remake of Uptown Saturday Night. David Dobkin was once attached to the project, but is no longer involved.

Last March, Warner Bros. was eyeing Will Smith and Denzel Washington to star. No deals have been made either actor yet, but Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is still hoping to land both actors (and as Will Smith’s production company is involved, there’s a good chance he’ll be onboard). The original Uptown Saturday Night starred Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier as two friends who give up their wallets to thieves. They realise that one of the wallets contains a winning lottery ticket, and go on a quest to retrieve it.

If he signs on, McKay wants to start shooting the remake after he wraps on Anchorman 2, which will likely start shooting in the first quarter of 2013.

First Pics Arrive From Tarantino’s Django Unchained

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first official pics have arrived from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The film sees Jamie Foxx’s Django escaping enslavement and with the help of Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter heads off on a mission of revenge against those who wronged him. Most importantly Django wants to find his wife, who’s being kept by evil plantation and brothel owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio).

Foxx has been talking to EW and says the film is both a serious look at slavery as well as a Quentin Tarantino movie, “There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way. You’ve seen movies deal with slavery – or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.”

The film should hit cinemas at the end of the year.

Rooney Mara Going To Brooklyn For Romantic Drama

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rooney Mara sure is busy finding new projects, as yesterday it was revealed she’s in talks for Spike Jonze’s new movie, and now Variety says she’s attached to star in the romantic drama Brooklyn.

Nick Hornby will adapt the screenplay from Colm Toibin’s novel, which is about a small-town Irish woman who must decide between two men in two different cities. The producers are currently seeking a director, and are eying a spring 2013 shoot. The adaptation will be budgeted between $20 million and $25 million.

Following Dragon Tattoo Mara has been much in demand, although as the David Fincher film was such a distinctive role, she’s still somewhat untested. However she’s definitely talented enough to be a big star.

Hope Springs Trailer – Meryl Streep works on her marriage

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell seems a bit of a dream cast, although the jury is still out on the film they all appear in, Hope Springs. Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) are a devoted couple, but decades of marriage have left Kay wanting to spice things up and reconnect with her husband. When she hears of a renowned couple’s specialist (Steve Carell) in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her skeptical husband, a steadfast man of routine, to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy. Just convincing the stubborn Arnold to go on the retreat is hard enough – the real challenge for both of them comes as they shed their bedroom hang-ups and try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place. No UK release date is currently set.

Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph To Include Classic Videogame Character Cameos

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Disney animation’s Wreck-It Ralph sounds like it’s gonna be fun, with an old style videogame baddie who wishes he could be the good guy. Now it’s been revealed that the movie will feature some Roger Rabbit style cameos from various classic videogame bad guys.

/Film reports that at CinemaCon, Disney revealed the movie would include appearances from Bowser from Super Mario Bros., Doctor Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog, Kano from Mortal Kombat, A Ghost from Pac-Man, Zangief from Street Fighter, Coily the Snake from Q*bert and several more from games by the likes of Nintendo, Midway Games and Sega.

Here’s the Wreck-If Ralph synopsis: ‘Wreck-It Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan – win a medal – but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?’ It’s currently due out in the UK on February 15th, 2013.

Heather Graham & Carrie-Anne Moss Finds Compulsion

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Heather Graham and Carrie-Anne Moss were both big in the early 2000s and then seemed to pretty much completely disappear. Now they’ll be able to make a bit of a comeback together, as they’ve begun production on Compulsion as two very different women who occupy adjacent apartments.

The film sees the women engage in a battle of wills, with one withdrawing from everything positive in life while the other is overflowing with its possibilities and illusions. Their confrontation and resolution is, apparently, both surprising and deeply disturbing. The film, now shooting in Ontario, Canada, also stars Kevin Dillon.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Saffron (Carrie-Anne Moss) is elegant, though she doesn’t emphasize the fact. A former child star, she’s emaciated, brilliant, excoriating and contemptuous of herself and the world. Amy (Heather Graham) is her neighbor, a chef, who is newly separated. She remains undaunted and is able to remold her mind and her body at will just like her surroundings. She dreams of helming her own Food Channel show and of being a celebrity like the ones she’s always so admired, such as the woman she discovers is actually living across the hall from her. She’s fearless and so in a way is her neighbor. It’s just that the chef fears nothing in life while her neighbor fears nothing about death.’ (Source: ComingSoon)

Andrea Riseborough Joins Alexander Skarsgard In The Hidden

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrea Riseborough (W.E., Oblivion) is an actress who’s flirted the edge of film stardom, but hasn’t quite made it yet. Now she has signed on to star in the Warner Bros. thriller The Hidden, which already has Alexander Skarsgard in the lead role, according to Variety.

The movie is about a family who takes cover in a bomb shelter after a mysterious but deadly outbreak. The actress will play Alexander Skarsgard’s wife, who’s also the mother of their two children.

Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer will make their feature directorial debut with the movie, working from their own original screenplay. Production is scheduled to begin later this year.

Rooney Mara On For Spike Jonze’s Next

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Carey Mulligan seems to have realised it’s simply not possible to keep making about 30 films a year forever, so she’s had to step back from starring in Spike Jonze’s untitled new movie. However the vacancy is not being left open, as Variety reports that that Rooney Mara is now in talks to replace Mulligan.

News of the project first surfaced last March, when it was believed that Spike Jonze would direct from a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman. Now it seems Spike Jonze will direct from his own screenplay, which revolves around a man who falls in love with a computer’s voice. Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Samantha Morton are also attached to star.

If Rooney Mara’s deal is finalised, she will begin work on the untitled project after wrapping on Steven Soderbergh’s The Bitter Pill.
