New Ben-Hur Trailer – The classic tale gets retold with Jack Huston & Toby Kebbell

June 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-hur-slideI may be completely wrong, but I’m finding it difficult to believe this new take on the classic Ben-Hur is going to be a hit. Indeed, it’s difficult to see why they thought a new version was necessary or desired, or indeed the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’s Timur Bekmambetov was the man to helm it. Even so, it’s coming and a new trailer has now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘BEN-HUR is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption. Based on Lew Wallace’s timeless novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Also starring Morgan Freeman and Rodrigo Santoro.’

At least Toby Kebbell has suggested the homoerotic undertones between Messala and Ben-Hur may make it across into this new version, which were present in the 1950s take. The film will be in cinemas in August. [Read more…]

Pete’s Dragon Trailer – A very different take on the tale of a boy and his beast

June 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

petes-dragon-slideThe first trailer for Disney’s new take on the part-animated family film Pete’s Dragon was keen to show us this was going to be a very different movie to the original, while also only teasing us about what the dragon would look like. Now a full trailer has arrived, which underlines this is a movie that only shares a title and vague concept with the original, although it does give us a much better look at the now very furry beast..

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, “Pete’s Dragon” is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon. “Pete’s Dragon” stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”), Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”), Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”), Karl Urban (“Star Trek”), Oona Laurence (“Southpaw”) and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”). The film, which is directed by David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”), is written by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field and produced by Jim Whitaker, p.g.a. (“The Finest Hours,” “Friday Night Lights”), with Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Great Gatsby”) serving as executive producer.

‘For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” flies into UK Cinemas on August 12, 2016.’ [Read more…]

Moana Teaser Trailer – First look at Disney’s Polynesian princess movie

June 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moana-slideAfter taking us into a city of talking animals with Zootopia – which recently hit a truly impressive $1bn worldwide at the box office – Disney is heading back into the world of princesses with Moana. However, rather than a chilly fantasy like Frozen, this one is set in Polynesia. The first teaser trailer has been released, with Auli’i Cravalho’s Moana, not being impressed with Dwayne Johnson’s demi-god, Maui.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one today knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfil her ancestors’ unfinished quest.

‘During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), “Moana” sails into UK cinemas 2 December, 2016.’ [Read more…]

Real O’Neals’ Noah Galvin Offers A Big Apology For Comments About Colton Haynes & Bryan Singer

June 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

noah-galvinThe Real O’Neals star Noah Galvin has had to do a pretty quick apologising act following the publication of an interview in which he threw major shade at the likes of fellow gays Colton Haynes and Bryan Singer. It would appear he wasn’t quite used to how widely his words would spread and the comment they’d cause that now he’s the star of a network TV show, and that his intention completely backfired.

During an interview with New York Magazine’s Vulture.com, Galvin criticised Haynes’ coming out, saying he was “the worst”, and “That’s not coming out. That’s fucking pussy bullshit. That’s like, enough people assume that I sleep with men, so I’m just going to slightly confirm the fact that I’ve sucked a dick or two. That’s not doing anything for the little gays but giving them more masturbation material.”

He also took a swipe at Bryan Singer, saying, “Bryan Singer likes to invite little boys over to his pool and diddle them in the fucking dark of night.”

Not content with that he also called out Eric Stonestreet’s portrayal of the gay Cam on Modern Family, saying, “He’s playing a caricature of a caricature of a stereotype of stereotype on Modern Family. And he’s a straight man in real life. And as hilarious as that character is, there’s a lack of authenticity.”

Colton Haynes certainly wasn’t impressed, posting on Instagram:

Galvin also soon apologised, with a two part Twitter message, where he suggested he was naive and had no right to say a lot of what he said. He also seems to have realised that what he said about Singer was potentially libellous:

Jon M. Chu May Direct Adaptation Of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Musical In the Heights

June 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jon-M-ChuWith Hamilton breaking records and become a breakout cultural phenomenon on the Broadway stage, it’s helped breath life back in plans to make a film based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s earlier Tony-winning hit musical, In The Heights. Those plans are now gathering pace, with TheWrap reporting that Now You See Me 2 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s Jon M. Chu is in talks to direct.

While those movies may not sound like good training for a musical, Chu’s background is actually in choreography. He’s also directed two of the Step Up movies, as well as the Justin Bieber documentary/concert movies Believe and Never Say Never, as well as the recent Jem And The Holograms film.

Miranda is leaving the cast of Hamilton soon, partly so he can help ensure the In The Heights Film is done correctly. On stage, he originated the lead role of In The Heights’ bodega owner Usvani, with the musical following the Dominican-American community in New York’s Washington Heights. It’s not expected that Miranda will play Usvani in the film (as it’s been reported he feels he’s now too old for the role), but he may well play another part.

Angelina Jolie Circling Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express

June 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Angelina-JolieLast November, Kenneth Branagh signed up to direct and star in a remake of Agatha Christie’s classic Murder on the Orient Express. Now he may have found his first co-star, as THR reports that Angelina Jolie is in talks for the movie.

She will be Harriet Hubbard, a role played by Lauren Bacall in Sidney Lumet’s famed 1974 version, which also starred Albert Finney (as Hercule Poirot), Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York and Jacqueline Bisset. Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit.

There are suggestions that Fox is thinking of Murder On The Orient Express as the first of a potential franchise, with plenty more Poirot stories that could be adapted if this film is a success. It’s not clear when it will start shooting, but it currently has a November 2017 release date set.

Elizabeth Banks, Helena Bonham Carter & Mindy Kaling May Join Female Ocean’s 11 Spin-Off

June 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elizabeth-banksA few days ago we reported that Cate Blanchett is in talks to join Sandra Bullock in the planned Ocean’s 11 spin-off, which will revolve around a group of female thieves. Now it seems director Gary Ross is filling out the other central roles, as Showbiz 411 reports that Elizabeth Banks, Helena Bonham Carter & Mindy Kaling are all likely to sign on too.

It’s believed the movie will centre on eight female thieves (the working title is Ocean’s Ocho), so there are a few more roles to cast yet. Rumours suggest Bullock’s character may be Danny Ocean’s sister, but no plot details have been released.

Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross should start shooting the movie either later this year or early next year, with filming believed to be taking place in New York.

Sacha Baron Cohen Set To Play Mandrake the Magician

June 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sacha-baron-cohenFor several years the idea of a movie based on the classic character, Mandrake The Magician, has been doing the rounds of Hollywood, but nobody has quite figured out how to make it work. However, Tinseltown hasn’t given up on the idea and now it’s ended up at Warner Bros., with THR reporting that Sacha Baron Cohen is now attached to star, and will develop the movie alongside Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen.

Lee Falk created Mandrake in 1934, with the illusionist a powerful hypnotist who uses his abilities to fight crime with Lothar, one of the strongest men in the world. Universal Pictures produced a 12-part serial based on the comic strip in 1939, but the character has not been seen on the big screen since then.

Disney owned rights for several years in the early 2000s, before they were acquired by Baldwin Entertainment and Hyde Park. Atlas Entertainment picked up the rights in 2009, and even commissioned a script by Janet Peoples and David Webb Peoples (12 Monkeys), before they teamed up with Warner Bros. It now looks like they may be trying to take things in a more comedic direction.

The Legend of Tarzan IMAX Trailer – Take a fresh look at (shirtless) Alexander Skarsgard in the jungle

June 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tarzan-main-poster-slideAfter quite a few sequels have bombed this summer, Warner will be hoping the big bet they’ve taken on people being interested in a new Tarzan movie will be lining up next month for The Legend Of Tarzan. They’ll also be hoping it wasn’t a mistake to have director David Yates doing post-production on both this film and Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them at the same time, with the movies hitting cinemas only fourth months apart.

To give us a fresh taste of the film, a three-minute IMAX trailer has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures comes the action adventure “The Legend of Tarzan,” starring Alexander Skarsgård (HBO’s “True Blood”) as the legendary character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

‘The film also stars Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction,” the “Captain America” films), Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”), Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond,” “Gladiator”), with Oscar winner Jim Broadbent (“Iris”), and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained”).

‘It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.’

The Legend Of Tarzan will be in cinemas in July. [Read more…]

John Boyega Signs On For Pacific Rim 2

June 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-boyegaIt’s all change for Pacific Rim 2. Guillermo Del Toro has stepped away and will no longer write or direct, and it’s expected most of the cast will change. However, Legendary has started piecing together who will star, with the studio announcing that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ John Boyega is set to take the lead role.

There’s not too much info on the character, other than that Boyega will be the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film. That suggests there may be a bit of a time jump for this follow up.

Del Toro, who is still onboard as a producer, comments, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Jurassic World screenwriter Derek Connolly is currently working on the script, with Steven S. DeKnight directing. While no plot details have been released, it’s a safe bet that monsters will once more be threatening the earth, with giant robots our only defence.
