Their Finest Trailer – Gemma Arterton & Sam Claflin try to win WWII through film

January 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

During World War II the UK, those who weren’t fighting had to make all sorts of cutbacks, with food rationed, blackouts ordered at night and limits on nearly everything. However, cinema was seen as so important to raising morale that the government invested large amounts of money in uplifting movies. It certainly worked, as more cinema tickets were sold per year in Britain between 1942 and 1946 than at any other time in history.

Now a film is on the way that wants to take a look at that time, as well as taking on gender issues, with Gemma Arteron as a young, untested screenwriter, charged with lifting the nation’s spirits.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘1940, London, the Blitz; with the country’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, and a makeshift cast and crew, work under fire to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits; and inspire America to join the war. Partnered alongside fellow screenwriter, Buckley (Sam Claflin) and eccentric actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), the trio set off to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American population.’

The movie is due out in April. [Read more…]

Manifesto Trailer – Cate Blanchett takes on the art world as 13 different characters

January 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate Blanchett is already renowned as one of the most versatile actors around, winning herself two Oscar. Hell, she was even convincing as a unique version of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes I’m Not There. Now she’s taking on 13 different roles in the Manifesto.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tour-de-force: a term so overused that we need an undeniable acting performance to renew its meaning for cinema. Cate Blanchett has just given us one, going all-out in Manifesto. Already respected as one of the best actresses in film, Blanchett raises the bar even higher by playing 13 different roles in Manifesto, embodying some of the most influential and emotional artist manifestos in history.

‘The architect of this unique film idea is director Julian Rosefeldt, a veteran of intricate films and installations. In Manifesto, he uses the words from various twentieth century manifestos of artists, architects, and filmmakers for dialogue. With a gorgeous production and luscious cinematography that would make Baz Luhrmann proud, Rosefeldt puts Blanchett in the everyday world—as a housewife, a factory worker, or a TV anchor—declaring the words that have inspired whole art movements. Manifesto is entertaining while also asking us to question if these passionate statements still hold true and inspire us today.’

The movie will premiere later this month at the Sundance Film Festival. [Read more…]

Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association Reveals Dorian Award Nominations

January 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Awards Season is upon us! The Golden Globes were last Sunday, the BAFTA nomination were out on Monday, and the Oscars will be revealing their noms next week. Sandwiched inbetween is the nomination announcement for the most important awards of all, the Dorians, voted for by the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (and I’m not just saying that because I’m a member). The list of this year’s nominees has now been announced!

Performers earning Dorian nominations include Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington, Thandie Newton, Donald Glover, Viola Davis (two nods) and a Rising Star placement for Stranger Things’ find Millie Bobby Brown. Carrie Fisher was nominated posthumously in GALECA’s Wilde Wit of the Year category.

“Our members showed a true interest in attitude, fire and meaningfulness in their Dorian nominations this year,” GALECA John Griffiths, GALECA president and Television Critic for Us Weekly. “I’m so proud to be part of this passionate, supportive and richly diverse bunch of film and TV experts.”

GALECA exists to bolster LGBTQ entertainment journalists as well as remind the world, and our at-risk youth, that “the gays” have a unique cultural history of putting great movies and TV shows on the trending list. Categories run the gamut, from Visually Striking Film to TV Current Affairs Show. Equally eclectic are the group’s choices: Since its inception in 2009, GALECA’s Film of the Year winners alone include Carol, Boyhood, 12 Years a Slave, Argo, Weekend, I Am Love and A Single Man.

GALECA’s Timeless Star honor, the organization’s affectionate career-achievement honor, this year goes to screenwriter, director and bon vivant/enfant terrible John Waters. Past Timeless picks include Sir Ian McKellen, George Takei, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

This year’s Dorian winners will be announced Thursday, January 26. The group’s annual Winners Toast, honoring a select group of 2016-17 winners, is set for Saturday afternoon, February 18, in Los Angeles. Over the years, GALECA toasts have a welcomed a variety of Dorian winners or their ambassadors, including Oscar-nominated Carol screenwriter Phyllis Nagy, Orange is the New Black star Lea DeLaria, Transparent actresses Melora Hardin and Alexandra Billings, and revered marriage rights activists Jeff Carrillo and Paul Katami. CHIPS Trailer – Dax Shepard & Michael Peña take on the California Highway Patrol

January 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

CHIPS may be fondly remembered in the US, but it never had the same impact over here in the UK. However, Warner Bros. must feel there’s enough life in the franchise, as they’ve decided to take the 1970s Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox TV show, and turn it into a movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ”Dax Shepard (“Hit and Run,” TV’s “Parenthood”) and Michael Peña (“The Martian”) star in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action comedy CHIPS. Shepard also directs from a script he penned based on the characters from the popular ‘70s television series created by Rick Rosner.

‘Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job—inside the CHP.

‘The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way.

‘Also starring are Rosa Salazar (“Insurgent”), Adam Brody (“Think Like a Man Too”), Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”), and Vincent D’Onofrio (“Jurassic World”).’

It’ll be in cinemas in March. [Read more…]

Peter Dinklage In Talks For Avengers: Infinity War

January 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Avengers: Infinity War is gonna be a big movie, which promises to bring together all the major Marvel universe characters, not just the usual suspect such as Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Thor. There’ll also be Spider-man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant Man and the Guardiand Of The Galaxy too.

Now they may be getting a big of a Game Of Thrones injection, as Pete Dinklage is in talks to join the movie and the fourth Avengers movie, according to Variety. Unfortunately though it hasn’t been revealed who Dinklage might be playing.

Not too much is officially known about the plot, although it is known Josh Brolin’s Thanos, and that it will involve the Infinity Stones, which have played roles in various titles, being brought together. Captain America: Civil War helmers Anthony and Joe Russo will direct both Avengers 3 and 4, which are expected to shoot back-to-back this Summer.

Anna Kendrick May Be A Female Santa Claus Tale for Disney

January 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Seeing how upset Fox News got at the suggestion you could have a black Santa Claus, they’re probably apoplectic that Disney is planning a movie about a female Santa. Variety reports that Anna Kendrick is in talks for the role.

The movie is about, ‘Santa’s daughter who is forced to take over the family business when her father decides to retire and brother ends up getting cold feet prior to his first big Christmas Eve flight.’

Miss Congeniality writer Marc Lawrence penned the script and will also direct. Hopefully it will work out better than his last movie, the abysmal Hugh Grant/Marisa Tomei movie, The Rewrite. It’s not known when the female Santa movie – which currently has the working title Nicole – will go into production.

Will Smith & Tom Hanks Eyed For Tim Burton’s Live-Action Dumbo

January 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the many live-action adaptations of their animated classic that Disney has is the works is Dumbo, which Tim Burton is planning to direct. (And those who aren’t keen on these live-action versions have Burton to blame, as it was the success of his Alice In Wonderland that kicked it all off).

The film is now forward with Variety reporting that Will Smith is circling the movie, while Tom Hanks has been offered a role too. If he signs on Smith, ‘would play the father of the children who develop a friendship with the lovable elephant after seeing him at the circus. Insiders also indicate that Tom Hanks has been offered a role as the villain.’

However, there are major obstacles to them signing on, as Disney wants to shoot this year, so Smith’s involvement would likely need to be scheduled around Bad Boys 3. Hanks meanwhile is weighing up whether to do Dumbo or the World War II drama The Grey Hound.

Madonna Planning To Direct Gay-Themed Movie The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells

January 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Madonna has never gotten too much respect as an actress (although she does have a Best Actress Golden Globe for Evita), but the two movies she’s directed showed she has potential behind the camera. Now she’s planning to follow 2008’s Filth And Wisdom, and 2011’s royal drama W.E., with The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells. She’s also been co-writing the script.

It’s certainly an ambitious project, based on Andrew Sean Greer’s novel about a woman being treated for depression in the mid-1980s, after the death of her twin brother from AIDS. The treatment has the bizarre effect of allowing her to experience two alternate lives that she may have lived if she’s been born in a different time – as a bohemian adulteress in 1918, and as a devoted mother and wife in the early 1940s. However she soon discovers that while each reality has its joys, they also take a toll.

The book also focuses on her relationship with her gay twin brother, who in Greta’s other existences is in the closet and involved with a woman, but still having secret relationships with men.

Madonna comments to Harper’s Bazaar, “It touches on a lot of really important topics I’ve always been invested in or championed—fighting for women’s rights, gay rights, civil rights, always fighting for the underdog. I’ve always felt oppressed. I know a lot of people would go, ‘Oh, that’s ridiculous for you to say that. You’re a successful white, wealthy pop star,’ but I’ve had the shit kicked out of me for my entire career, and a large part of that is because I’m female and also because I refuse to live a conventional life. I’ve created a very unconventional family. I have lovers who are three decades younger than me. This makes people very uncomfortable. I feel like everything I do makes people feel really uncomfortable. Why does this book appeal to me? Why did I want to adapt it into a screenplay? Because it touches me on so many levels and it deals with so many important topics. Right now, more than ever, it’s an extremely timely story to tell.”

It’s not clear when the film might be made, although it appears Madonna is deep in research for the movie and hoping to get it going soon.

First Look At Andrew Garfield, Russell Tovey & The Cast Of The National Theatre’s Angels In America

January 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the first part of Tony Kushner’s two-part, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Millennium Approaches, was first performed in San Francisco, it was the 1992 British National Theatre production which helped state the play’s claim to being something exceptional. It and it’s follow-up, Perestroika, went of to win  the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, amongst other gongs.

The 2003 HBO mini-series version also won five Golden Globe and 11 Emmys.

To mark the 25th Anniversary, the National Theatre will be putting on a new staging, with a great cast including, Rusell Tovey, Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, Stuart Angell, Susan Brown, Laura Caldow, Denise Gough, Claire Lambert, Amanda Lawrence, James McArdle, Becky Namgauds, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Stan West and Lewis Wilkins. Now the first cast pictures have been released, which you can take a look at below.

Set in America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. The production will be directed by Olivier and Tony award-winner Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, War Horse, Husbands & Sons).

Andrew Garfield, playing Prior Walter, comments: “I feel tremendously grateful and healthily daunted at the prospect of being back in a rehearsal room at the NT to attempt to scale the mountain of Tony Kushner’s masterpiece Angels in America. Thanking God or some other divine force to have Marianne Elliot as our intrepid leader and this incredible company of actors to share the adventure with. What a gift to work on and offer up this play that feels so urgent at this very moment, for all of our souls.”

Nathan Lane, playing Roy Cohn, adds: “I am very honored to be making my NT debut with such a distinguished cast under the direction of the brilliant Marianne Elliott in Tony Kushner’s masterpiece. In light of recent political events here in the U.S. I can’t think of a better or more timely play to be doing.”

Russell Tovey, playing Joe Pitt, says: “The great work is about to begin. The excitement and pride I feel as I embark on rehearsals for this epic play and this majestic production is palpable. I am so incredibly excited to be back at the NT after nearly ten years away with this historic and vitally important piece of theatre at a time when it has never seemed more relevant. I cannot wait to explore the tormented world of Joe Pitt and those tortured souls around him.”

The show will Preview in the Lyttelton Theatre from Tuesday 11 April, with a full opening in early May. Public booking for Angels in America will open at 8.30am on Friday 20 January 2017.

If you can’t get a ticket, Angels in America will be broadcast by NT Live from the National Theatre to cinemas around the UK and internationally (dates and venues to be announced). [Read more…]
