Dax Shepard Defends CHiPS Against Accusations Of Homophobia

March 25, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell believe in LGBT rights enough that they waited to marry until the right was extended to same sex couples. So you wouldn’t think he’d be having to fend off accusations of homophobia, but there’s been a bit of disquiet about the film version of CHiPS, which he wrote, directed and stars in, about whether some of its jokes are actually anti-gay.

That includes Michael Pena’s undercover FBI character, Poncho, accidentally face-planting in his partners crotch and freaking out while holding a naked Baker (Shepard), and also his discomfort when he’s [as reported by TheWrap) ‘confronted with a glory shot of Baker’s bulge in tighty whities in the police locker room, where other bros engage in bare-chested hugs and the camera watches the many bulges bounce off each another as Ponch’s face twists in horror’.

It’s humour rooted in gay panic, and while it can be funny when smartly used to show the ridiculousness of some expressions of masculinity, in many cases it’s used purely as a cheap laugh and rooted in homophobia itself. The latter is what some have accused CHiPS of – although TheWrap does acknowledge that the film tries to deal with some of the issues it raises in terms of Poncho’s hyper-masculinity.

There are also three gay characters in the movie itself – a corrupt cop and his armored car driver who are secretly a couple, and an inept policeman who is more interested in lusting after his fellow officers in their uniform, and talking about how many people he’s slept with. All are essentially used as a punchline.

Aware of how some might see the film’s humour, Shepard told HuffPo, “I do think it’s fun and challenging to have a topic like homophobia be in this movie and to do it correctly. That’s a very fun challenge. The intent isn’t homophobic, the intent is actually to be progressive and still deal with that issue because that issue is always going to be funny ― all those issues are going to be funny.”

Although it appears his heart is in the right place, it also doesn’t sound like he’s fully thought out what he’s doing, as while the intent may not have been homophobic, if the audience laughs out of a homophobic impulse, it’s not exactly progressive.

Bell, show also stars in CHiPS, adds, “There are certain things at face value you could say, because we’re exploring the topic, ‘Oh, that seems homophobic or that seems sexist,’ but it’s not. It’s the exploration of the topic and the exploration of the different points of view involved in the topic to open up the conversation to cure the disease that we’re riddled with…

“If you really look at it and you hear Dax’s arguments about why he wrote it, he’s a feminist, for sure, and he’s also about the most un-homophobic person you could ever find ― I mean, we waited until everyone could get married before we got married, based on principle.”

CHIPS Red Band Trailer – Dax Shepard shows off some California Highway patrol butt

March 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

CHIPS may be fondly remembered in the US, but it never had the same impact over here in the UK. However, Warner Bros. must feel there’s enough life in the franchise, as they’ve decided to take the 1970s Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox TV show, and turn it into a movie.

A new red band trailer has arrived, which even gives us a glimpse of Dax Shepard’s rather smooth butt – although it is part of a slightly lazy scene about how horrific it is for a guy to be naked when another guy is around.

Here’s the synopsis: ”Dax Shepard (“Hit and Run,” TV’s “Parenthood”) and Michael Peña (“The Martian”) star in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action comedy CHIPS. Shepard also directs from a script he penned based on the characters from the popular ‘70s television series created by Rick Rosner.

‘Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job—inside the CHP.

‘The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way.

‘Also starring are Rosa Salazar (“Insurgent”), Adam Brody (“Think Like a Man Too”), Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”), and Vincent D’Onofrio (“Jurassic World”).’

It’ll be in cinemas in March. [Read more…]

Kristen Bell Joins Hubby Dax Shepard In The CHiPs Film

September 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kristen-bellWhile it might feel like every classic US TV series has been made into a film, there are still a few out there, including CHiPs, which ran from 1977-1983. However for a while a film version has been in the works, with Dax Shepard set to write, direct and star.

Now it’s been announced that he hasn’t gone to far to find a co-star, as his wife, Kristen Bell is set to appear in the movie, according to TheWrap. Michael Pena, Adam Brody, Rosa Salazar and Vincent D’Onofrio are also set to star.

The film, ‘follows two California highway patrol officers and their adventures in crime-fighting. Shepard takes over the role of Officer Jon Baker, while Pena inherits the role of Frank “Ponch” Poncherello from Erik Estrada.’

Jason Bateman & Tina Fey Have A Lot Of Family In A This I Where I Leave You Poster

July 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

this-is-where-i-leave-you-posterA few weeks ago we got a trailer for Shawn Levy’s dark comedy This Is Where I Leave You, and now it’s been followed up by a poster showing off the film’s large cast, which includes Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Kathryn Hahn, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Dax Shepard and Jane Fonda.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide— driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.

The film will hit cinemas this September.

This Is Where I Leave You Trailer – Shawn Levy does something different with Tina Fey & Jason Bateman

May 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shawn Levy is best known for helming comedies and big family-friendly films such as Night At The Museum, The Internship and Real Steel. However he’s going more towards dramatic dark comedy with This Is Where I Leave You.

He’s certainly teamed up with a great cast to do it, including Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Kathryn Hahn, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Dax Shepard and Jane Fonda.

Dax Shepard And Kristen Bell Celebrate The End Of DOMA With Twitter Proposal

June 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen-Bell-and-Dax-Shepard
There was a lot to cheer yesterday when the US Supreme Court struck down key parts of DOMA (the Defense Of Marriage Act), meaning that the United States Federal Goverment could no longer deny  benefits to same sex couple who were legally married. They also refused to hear a case involving Prop 8, the ordinance that banned equal marriage in California, meaning that same sex weddings are likely to begin there again soon.

One couple who were celebrating were Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell, who’ve long been staunch supporters of gay marriage and vowed not to marry themselves until that right was also extended to gay couples.

After the rulings, Bell tweeted, ‘[email protected] will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove’

While gay marriage still isn’t legal throughout the US, Bell obviously feels the SCOTUS decisions are strong enough that she can now marry Shepard with a clear conscience, especially now that the way has been cleared for gay people in California to marry.

Indeed, many now see equal marriage as somewhat of an inevitability throughout the US. There are still numerous obstacles to that, not least that while 13 states allow same sex marriage, there are more than that which specifically proscribe it, often within their individual constitutions. That’s not a  complete block, as some states that once had bans (such as Connecticut) now allow same sex marriage, while others that specifically ban same sex marriage are on the road to overturning that, by retaining a ban on the word marriage but providing unions with rights similar to marriage.

Even Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who has long been the Court’s most unpleasant hater of all things gay has said he thinks equal marriage in the US is now inevitably, no matter how much he personally dislikes that.

And with Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell now likely to marry, will Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie now follow suit? They previously said they were waiting for equal marriage but that was getting more difficult to hold to. Perhaps now they’ll decide the time is right.

Starring: Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell, Michael Rosenbaum, Tom Arnold, Bradley Cooper
Director: Dax Shepard, David Palmer
Running Time: 95 mins

Release Date: February 18th 2013

Charlie (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Kristin Bell) are in love. When she gets the opportunity of a job at a major university, Charlie offers to go with her. There’s a bit of a problem though – Charlie’s in the FBI’s Witness Protection Program and if he leaves the small town they live in, he’ll have to leave the protection he’s got (largely Tom Arnold’s US Marshal) behind. Hit And Run Red Band Trailer – Dax Shepard & Bradley Cooper go on the road

June 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hit and Run is the story of Charlie Bronson (Dax Shepard), a former getaway driver who busts out of the Witness Protection Program to drive his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) to Los Angeles so she can land her dream job. Their road trip grows awkwardly complicated, when they are chased by the feds (led by Tom Arnold), and increasingly dangerous, when Charlie’s former gang of criminals (led by Bradley Cooper) enter the fray. Although Shepard has a variable track record in lead roles, it’s a great cast. The trailer does skirt on the edge of racism and seems slightly obsessed with Bradley Cooper having been raped in prison, but hopefully in the context of the movie it doesn’t come across a homophobic.
