Moonlight Trailer – Growing up black and gay in 1980s America

August 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moonlight-triptychMoonlight is one of the movies anticipated indie movies of the year, with some suggesting it has potential to be an awards contender. It’s already set to get a pretty prestigious debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in a couple of months time.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘MOONLIGHT is the tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality. Anchored by astonishing performances and the singular vision of filmmaker Barry Jenkins, MOONLIGHT is a groundbreaking exploration of masculinity-a sensual, intoxicating piece of cinema that uncovers deep truths about the moments that define us, the people who shape us most, and the ache of love that can last a lifetime.’

The cast includes Naomie Harris (Spectre), André Holland (The Knick), Mahershala Ali (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Edson Jean (War Dogs), and soul/R&B singer Janelle Monaé. The fact it’s split into three chapters is reflected in the great new artwork above. Moonlight is expected to get an awards friendly release in the US towards the end of the year. [Read more…]

New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Felicity Jones heads for a galaxy far, far away

August 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rogue-one-slideWhile the first teaser trailer for Rogue One was pretty cool, there have been rumours of trouble behind the scenes, with Disney said to be concerned about the tone, and the need for extensive reshoots. However, the latest trailer continues to make this look like it could be awesome. It certainly has a different feel to The Force Awakens,  and it’s not surprising they have gone for a slightly 1970s look, as the film is set just before A New Hope.

The film follows the mission that got hold of the Death Star plans that played such a vital role in the first movie, with the trailer not just teasing the planet destroying weapon, but also the fact Darth Vader will feature in the movie. And after the success of Rey, the trailer introduces us to another strong heroine in the form of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.

The movie hits cinemas in December. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

First Look At Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt In Sci-fi Flick Passengers

August 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

passengers-ew-pic1Morten Tyldum certainly likes to move through genres, as he went thriller with Headhunters, historical drama with The Imitation Game, and now he’s heading into the world of sci-fi with Passengers. The first pics from the movie have arrived via EW.

Pratt play one of thousands of people who set off on an 120-year interstellar voyage to a new planet. However he wakes up 90 years ahead of schedule, with only androids for company. In need of other human, he decides to wake up a female journalist named Aurora (Lawrence). They inevitably begin to fall in love, and also discover a malfunction on the ship that could threaten their lives.

Tyldum comments, “I honestly couldn’t ask for a better cast. They’re so great together, and both of them are so hard-working. They take the characters so seriously and bring so much to the roles with charm and intelligence and charisma. They really went for it and it is phenomenal to watch.”

CW Seed Working On First Superhero Series With A Gay Lead

August 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-rayThere have been increasing calls for more LGBT characters in the world of on-screen superheroes. Some shows such as Arrow have had LGBT side characters, but in the movies it’s been almost exclusively straight. However, now CW Seed is making a move towards more inclusivity, as the online content arm of the CW network is planning the first superhero show with a gay lead.

And as with Seed’s popular Vixen, it’ll be based on a DC Comics property. The series will be Freedom Fighters: The Ray, following the classic character who has the power to harness and control light, which allow him to fly and create powerful bursts of light. The series will be based on the Ray Terrill version of the character, who is capable of converting his body completely into light energy.

According to the press release, ‘Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realised he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.’

The hope is that alongside the animated series, the character can be spun into live-action appearances in the Arrowverse, with CW President Mark Pedowitz commenting, “Without question, that is the way we’re intending to build these things out. That is the intention to build out these animated shows into the Arrowverse and introduce them on any one of the four shows. Marc Guggenheim did a good job last year doing that with Megalyn [Echikunwoke, who voiced Vixen on the animated show and went on to play her on Arrow].”

Star Trek: Discovery Will Have An Openly Gay Character & A Female Lead

August 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-discoveryFor the first 50 years of its existence, Star Trek pushed to boundaries on things such as race, but it never had an on-screen gay character. That’s certainly changing, with John Cho’s Sulu revealed to have a husband in Star Trek Beyond, and now it’s been revealed there will be a gay character in the new TV series, Star Trek: Discovery.

The show, which will air on CBS: All Access in the US and Netflix in the rest of the world, has been outing promoting itself at with a Television Critics Association panel, where showrunner Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal) was asked about the possibility of a homosexual character. He replied, “absolutely we’re having a gay character.”

It was one thing Fuller was apparently adamant about, as he worked on Star Trek: Voyager, and still has a folder of the hate mail they got when it was rumoured Jeri Ryan’s character, Seven Of Nine, was going to be a lesbian. Talking about the progress made since then thanks to the likes of Will & Grace, he added, “I think we’ve come a long way since then; gay rights have come a lot further in that time than racial issues and women’s issues.”

Women’s issues are also something the new show may put centre stage, as it was also revealed that the lead character on the show would be a woman, although unlike earlier Star Trek series, the main character won’t be the captain of the ship. Instead it will be a subordinate, likely to be a Lt. Commander. The show will take place 10 years before the original series, and will be set in the same timeline as the earlier television series, rather than the Kelvin timeline of the recent movies. Discovery – Season 1 is due to be released next year.

Brad Pitt Is Hoping To Get David Fincher To Direct World War Z Sequel

August 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

david-fincher-brad-pittAfter World War Z became a surprise hit (particularly surprising as it had a tortuous production, with much of it needing to be reshot), Paramount was keen to get a sequel made. However that’s proven difficult too, not least because the chosen director, Juan Antonio Bayona, dropped out after being attached to the project for a long time.

Now it seems star/producer has decided who he wants replace the departed Bayona, and he’s aiming high, as his Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button director David Fincher is in talks for the role. It would be surprising if Fincher does sign on, not least because it’s known he’s wary of sequels, partly because of his experience making Alien3, which ended with him being locked out of the editing room.

However, it seems that talks that were initially lukewarm are now heating up, according to Variety. Fincher’s interest may be due to the fact it’s known he’s interested in making a big, blockbuster type movie, but previous summer tentpole-style projects he’s been attached to have never made out of the starting gate (such as the version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea he was long attached to).

If he does sign on, he’ll be taking Pitt back to a world where zombies are running riot, and the few human survivors are struggling to survive and maintain some semblance on civilisation. The movie was originally supposed to be in cinemas June 2017, but it’s expected to be delayed.

Jason Momoa In Talks For The Crow Reboot Lead

August 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-momoaWhile Jason Momoa is a fine actor, you have to wonder whether he’s now in talks to lead the planned remake of The Crow, because he’s the only actor left who hasn’t been attached at some point or another. Jack Huston, Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, James McAvoy and Tom Hiddleston and Channing Tatum are just a few of the actors who’ve been attached or rumoured for the movie in the past few years.

The list of directors who’ve come and gone isn’t much shorter either.

Mashable had the news Momoa is in talks for The Crow, playing Eric Draven, who is killed and comes back as the supernatural The Crow, in order to seek revenge. Corin Hardy is set to direct the movie, which is said to be closer to the original comic book source than earlier films.
