Sparrow Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed short film, which needs your help

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sparrow-slideThe gay-themed short film Sparrow is currently in post-production, and to support that it’s released a trailer. However, it could also do with a bit of help, as the New Zealand short is currently crowdfunding on Boosted to help get it finished.

The film is ‘a beautiful, non-spoken 15-minute story set in the 1960’s, and is told from the perspective of Jim, a small boy who believes he can fly. But his life is overshadowed by a story about his grandfather who died a hero in World War 2. But he discovers that the legend that his father so adamantly clings to, is a lie. His grandfather was a gay man who saw the futility of war and deserted in protest when his lover was shot in the dugouts of Egypt. In unraveling the truth behind what happened, Jim discovers strength in his grandfather’s actions and stands up to the bullies at his school in an unexpected way.’

Writer/director Welby Ings comments, “Sparrow is a distinctive New Zealand story located in the beautiful, yet slightly surreal world of blasted quarries, gravel roads, abandoned psychiatric hospitals and wooden schools. Here, hypnotic and graceful camera movement seduces us into the almost magical realism of the narrative.”

You can take a look at the teaser below, which suggests this is going to be a beautiful and tragic story. If you want to help get Sparrow finished, head over to Boosted. [Read more…]

New The Girl On The Train Trailer – Emily Blunt gets involved in a travelling mystery

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

girl-on-the-train-pic1-slidePaula Hawkins’ novel, The Girl On The Train, turned into a bit of a publishing phenomenon, which inevitably meant a movie adaptation would follow. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Haley Bennett, Luke Evans, Edgar Ramirez and Allison Janney star in The Girl on the Train, from director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and producer Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods). Antonio Banderas To Play Gay Fashion Legend Gianni Versace In New Biopic

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Antonio-BanderasAntonio Banderas has long been an admirer of Gianni Versace, and now he’s set to play the fashion designer in a new biopic, according to WWD. Pelle the Conqueror and The House Of The Spirits’ Bille August is set to direct the movie, which will start shooting in December.

The movie will follow Versace’s story, who went from being a small town Italian boy who apprenticed in his mother’s sewing business to becoming one of the most renowned fashion designers in history and head of a clothing empire. He was also openly gay, and had been with his partner since 1982. Versace was tragically killed by Andrew Cunanan in 1997, who was on a killing spree having murdered three other people in the preceding weeks. It’s still now known if Versace was deliberately targeted, and if he was, why Cunanan would have done so (the murderer killed himself eight days after shooting Gianni, and so could not say why he’d done it).

Banderas has a great love for fashion, and has been studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London. He presented his first collection in collaboration with Scandinavian high-street label Selected in May.

However, the Versace film is completely unofficial, with the fashion group he founced saying, that ‘it has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.’

Disney Star Ross Lynch Turning Gay Serial Killer For Indie Movie My Friend Dahmer

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ross-lynchRoss Lynch is perhaps best known for appearing in the hit Disney channel movie, Teen Beach Party and the same channel’s series Austin & Ally, but now he’s got a very different role, as it’s been announced he’ll be playing infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in My Friend Dahmer, according to THR. Marc Meyers is set to direct the movie, adapted from Derf Backderf’s critically acclaimed graphic novel.

The 70s-set movie follows Dahmer before he became a killer, as he ‘struggles with a difficult family life and thoughts of wanting to kill.’

Dahmer is of course one of the most famous serial killers in history, who killed at least 17 people, most of whom he’d picked up at Milwaukee gay bars. The fact that he kept body parts, ate parts of them and had sex with their corpses ensured he stood out from nearly all other killers. He said what he really wanted was to create a kind of zombie so that the person would never leave him, and managed to kill several of his victims while injecting things into their brains as part of his experimentation. He also defied the stereotypical image of a monster, as Dahmer was quite handsome and most people thought he was pretty normal until it was discovered what he was really doing. He was killed in prison by another inmate in 1994.

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

magnificent-seven-slideThere are still plenty of people wondering whether The Magnificent Seven needs a remake, but we’re getting one. It certainly helps that they’ve brought together a great cast, including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee and Peter Sarsgaard.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven.  With the sleepy town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate towns people employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier).  As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.’

Fourth Rebooted Star Trek Film Coming With Chris Hemsworth Returning

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris-HemsworthBack in 2009 nobody really knew what a Chris Hemsworth was. His biggest role was a couple hundred episodes of Aussie soap opera Home & Away, before he scored a tiny part in the rebooted Star Trek, playing Captain Kirk’s dad, George, who didn’t last more than the first few minutes before dying. However, it turns out that won’t be the last we’ll see of his in the renewed franchise.

He may have gone onto to the superpowered heights of being Thor, but Paramount has announced that even though Star Trek Beyond hasn’t been released yet, they’re already working on the next film and that it will bring back Hemsworth.

What we don’t know is how George Kirk will return, although with Star Trek there are plenty of options. He might be brought into the future or the crew could end up back in the past. Alternatively, it may turn out he didn’t die after all. We do know the two Kirk’s will meet, with George described as, ‘a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born.’

Chris Pine is already confirmed to return as Jame Kirk, and the likes Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg are expected to be back too. It’s not known how the film will deal with the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, and whether it means the character of Chekov will be retired.

Shared Rooms Trailer – First look at the gay-themed holiday comedy from the director of Role/Play

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shared-rooms-trailer-slideRob Williams must be a big fan of Christmas. He had success a few years ago with the coming out comedy Make The Yuletide Gay, and his latest, Shared Rooms, is also set around the holidays. He’s not only about Christmas though, as Williams has also directed the likes of Role/Play, The Men Next Door and Out To Kill.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘SHARED ROOMS explores the meaning of home and family through three interrelated stories of gay men finding connections during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day – a married couple who take in a teenage relative who was kicked out of his home after his parents discovered he was gay; a pair of roommates forced to share a bed for the week, much to the delight (and horror) of the one harboring a secret crush on the other; and two men looking for a quick hookup who end up finding a much stronger connection.’

The film has already been winning awards, including the Audience Award, Best Feature Comedy at FilmOut San Diego. The trailer has now arrived, which you can take a look at below. [Read more…]

BBC Planning A Mini-Series About 1940s Gay Love Story, Written By Patrick Gale

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-galeWriter Patrick Gale is best known for writing books such as Notes From An Exhibition and A Place Called Winter, but now he’s going to be writing for the screen. The BBC has commissioned him to write a two-part gay love story, the first part set in the 1940s and 1950s and the second in the modern day, called Man In An Orange Shirt.

Gale seems pretty excited about the whole thing, commenting, “Man In An Orange Shirt is the most exciting screen project I’ve worked on to date: an original drama exploring strands of gay male experience since the 1940s. It has been such a privilege to be given such an open brief and then allowed to run with it.

“I don’t want to give too much away but after much experimenting, we’ve ended up with two hour-long films – one set in the 1940s and 50s, one set in the violently contrasted present; one depicting a love story made impossible by pressures from society, one a love story nearly derailed by the long-term fallout from the 1940s story. People who know my novels will be unsurprised to hear that that stories give equal focus to wives and mothers and are very much about tensions between family bonds, the need to be good and the urge to seize happiness.

“I hope they’ll appeal equally to straight and gay viewers, but also that they’ll leave either side feeling challenged about things they take for granted.”

There are now more exact plot details, although Gale comments suggest it will at least in part deal with gay love during an era when homosexuality was illegal, with the second part looking at how the the ways people dealt with those pressure are still being felt today. We also don’t know when we might see the shows.

Diederick Santer, Executive Producer for production company Kudos adds, “I’m so proud to be sharing an original work from Patrick Gale with the BBC One audience. Man In An Orange Shirt is a treat – both epic and intimate, and as touching and entertaining as it is thought-provoking.”

Idris Elba Takes On The Dark Tower In A Selection Of New Pics

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

dark-tower-pic2-slideThe adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has had a difficult journey to the screen. It’s been talked about for decades, and while this got serious in the last few years with the likes of Javier Bardem attached to the project, it’s stalled numerous times, not least Universal getting cold feet about committing to three films and two connecting TV series.

However, now Sony Picture has taken over, Ron Howard is behind the camera, and Idris Elba is starring as gunslinger Roland Deschain. The character is busying tracking the evil Man In Black (Matthew McConaughey) across various dimension, to try and stop him destroying The Dark Tower, which is where all universes meet.

One of the more interesting things about Dark Tower is the fact that while it’s a fantasy/western series, it connects to many other King novels via characters and places. It appears that will remain to a certain extent, with the movie using a child called Jake, who has a power called ‘The Shine’, which of course refers to Danny’s power in The Shining (although they can’t call the power The Shining, as Warner Bros. owns the rights to that).

A selection of new images from the movie have now arrived, which you can take a look at below. The film is due out next February. [Read more…]
