Toy Story 4 Teaser Trailer – Woody & the gang are coming back once more

November 12, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pixar has come a long way from the company that once refused to countenance the idea of making sequels to its movies. We’re now getting ready for the fourth Toy Story film, but as the first three were so good, that’s certainly not a bad thing. That said, the voice cast has been talking about how emotionally it difficult was to record the final scenes – so prepare to have your heart ripped out by Woody and co. once more.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy. Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”) and produced by Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”), Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” ventures to UK cinemas on the 21st June 2019.’

The first image, teaser trailer and poster have now been released. Take a look at them below. [Read more…]

Upcoming Gay Rugby Film ‘In From The Side’ Needs Your Help

November 7, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gay and inclusive rugby has become popular enough that it even has its own biennial tournament, the Bingham Cup, which brings together, which brings together gay and bisexual rugby union teams worldwide. However, despite its growing popularity, not that many people know too much about inclusive rugby.

That may be about to change though, as the planned film In From The Side, hopes to take us into the world of gay rugby. The film, ‘features a story of an adulterous affair between two members of a fictional London based gay rugby club. The film explores the multiple types of connections that can occur within a large group of gay men in a seemingly hyper masculine and aggressive team sport environment, illuminating the very real emotional tensions and pressures this can create.

‘The story is a unique and interesting exploration of both masculinity, fraternity, and of a different form of forbidden love that refreshingly does not stem from homophobia.’

The film comes from writer/director Matt Carter (Jayson Bend: Queen and Country) and writer/producer Adam Silver. However, to help get it in the can, the makers are looking for support on Kickstarter. There’s just a couple of days left for them to hit their £10,000 crowdfunding target. So if you’re interested, take a look at the video below, and then head over to Kickstarter to help out (and as you’d expect, there are some pretty good rewards depending of how much you pledge. Lebanese Student Filmmaker Wins The Iris Prize LGBT+ Film Award

October 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Iris Prize Winner Lara Zeidan (centre), with Lord Glendonbrook (left) and Iris Prize Festival director Berwyn Rowlands (right)

This year’s Iris Prize Festival has come to an end after a tremendous six-day celebration of film in Cardiff. Events came to a close on Sunday with a carnival and awards show, which included the announcement of this year’s winner of the most valuable LGBT+ short film award. The £30,000 prize gives support to a filmmaker to make another film in Wales.

Three Centimetres, directed by Lebanese student filmmaker Lara Zeidan, was announced as the winner of the Iris Prize 2018. This was the first time in the festival’s 12-year history that a film from Lebanon had even been nominated for the prize. The single shot short, which takes place in the gondola of a ferris wheel in a decaying fun park in Beirut, took the prize after massively impressing the jury.

International Jury Chair Carrie Lyell, editor of DIVA magazine, said: “Three Centimetres is such an audacious film. It’s so refreshing to hear female sexuality spoken off in such a frank and positive way, and from a female perspective. It’s visually stunning, with utterly convincing dialogue and engaging characters, and it uses the form of short film perfectly to tell its story. And it’s so nice to see a coming out story in a context and a setting that feels new. It’s like nothing we’ve seen before.”

Of the film’s writer and director, Lara Zeidan, she said, “We all agreed that we couldn’t wait to see what she does next. If there’s any justice in the world, she has a great career ahead of her.”

After winning the prize, Lara Zeidan commented, “I’m delighted to have won the Iris Prize. I love working in short film – It’s all about sharing small but meaningful moments.”

The prize was presented by Lord Glendonbrook, whose Michael Bishop Foundation supports the Iris Prize.

The three finalists in the international category were announced at an event on Saturday afternoon, with Pre-Drink, by Canadian filmmaker Marc-Antoine Lemire, and British director Harry Lighton’s film Wren Boys named alongside Three Centimetres.

“Wren Boys is a huge feat, executed perfectly,” the jury said. “It was shot on film, which we so rarely see, and it drew us instantly into that world, challenging our prejudices and expectations. It was refreshing to see a positive depiction of masculinity and the relationship between gay men and straight men.”

Of Pre-Drink the jury said, “This was a stunning exploration of the fluidity of attraction, challenging but accessible, and the performances were superb. It portrayed sex in a positive, shame-free way, and handled the subject of consent with a lightness of touch. It sparkled.”

Alonside the main International Iris Prize, Beyond ‘There’s always a black issue, dear’, directed by London-based photographer Claire Lawrie, was announced as Best British Short, sponsored by Pinewood Studios.

Chair of the Best British jury, Rod Thomas (aka Bright Light Bright Light) said, “Its visual choices are on point, its soundtrack perfectly orchestrated, and its treatment, presentation and representation of its subjects deserves the highest commendation. A truly magnificent film, showing the adversity and struggle of an era and the people who fought and survived and influenced society through their art and creativity. It made us want to see so much more.”

Beyond… was named alongside Abena Taylor-Smith’s film Ladies Day and Wren Boys in the top three films from this category, with a special commendation going to Bachelor, 38, from Cardiff-based filmmaker Angela Clarke.

Rod added: “The jury loved Ladies Day’s visual choices, the diversity of its characters and its ability to raise an often ignored conversation with quiet resilience and pride, demonstrating a promising future in the director’s career.

“Wren Boys is an extraordinary piece that deals with heavy subject matter with both humour and punch. By playing with our own presumptions and expectations, and constantly keeping us surprised, the story was a triumph.

“And Bachelor, 38 delivered one of the most beautiful and touching love stories, told with extreme respect and care for its subject. The film’s majesty lies in its ability to let the protagonist voice the entire piece.”

The Best Feature Award, sponsored by Bad Wolf Studios, was won by Yen Tan’s drama 1985. The jury said, “Writer/Director Yen Tan has crafted a film of intimate moments sewn together with such care that found ourselves wholly immersed, feeling equal parts sadness and hope.”

Best Performance in a Male Role, sponsored by Attitude Magazine, was awarded to Félix Maritaud for Sauvage. The jury commented, “Through Félix’s honest, vulnerable portrayal as a young gay hustler surviving on the streets in France, we were pulled into his world from the opening scene.”

Best Performance in a Female Role, sponsored by DIVA Magazine, was awarded to Jamie Chung for 1985. The jury said that even though it was a supporting role, “Every scene Jamie appeared in was thoughtful, heartbreaking, and so honest we felt like we were in the room with her.”

The Iris Prize Youth Award, sponsored by Cardiff University, was won by the Australian film Mrs McCutcheon, from director John Sheedy. The award was voted for by audience members at the Iris Education Day on Friday and the Pride Cymru Youth Conference on Saturday, who had the opportunity to watch five films considered age appropriate from this year’s programme.

The inaugural Audience Award for Best British Short, sponsored by Buzz Magazine, was won by Wren Boys, with Bachelor, 38 in second and Ladies Day in third place.

Commenting on this year’s festival, Director Berwyn Rowlands said, “This year’s festival was all about the filmmakers. Helping them to network, to see each other’s films, discuss those films, and meet the audience for their films. We’re very happy and very proud that both Lara and Claire are here in Cardiff to accept their prizes.”

Jurassic World and Law & Order: SVU Star BD Wong Now Has A Hunky Hubby

October 11, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

BD Wong is one of those actors who’s popped up in all manner of things, while never being the main attraction himself. As a result he’s very recognisable even if you don’t know his name. His resume includes over 200 episodes of Law & Order: SVU, as well as the likes of Gotham, Mr. Robot and Oz. Notably he’s also the only actor to appear (as the same character) in both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, as geneticist and ‘creator’ of the dinos, Dr. Henry Wu.

Now he can add ‘husband’ to his illustrious resume, as the actor married his longtime partner, Richert John Frederickson Schnorr, in a ceremony in New York last Sunday. Schnorr posted a pic of their first kiss (see below), along with the words, ‘It really kinda is the happiest day of your life. Thanks to my family and friends for the love and words and support and dance moves. Thanks to @msanamatronic for the grooves. Thanks to @kealasettle for the pipes. Thanks to @liachangphotography for the 📸 Thanks to @wongbd for loving me #schwong’

And yes, that does mean they has Scissor Sister’s Ana Matronic DJ-ing the wedding, as well as The Greatest Showman’s Keala Settle singing (although no word on whether she sang This Is Me). Sounds like it was quite the shindig!

The couple met back in 2010 at a singles mixer night, which if nothing else goes to show that even if you’re a famous actor, you’ve still got to put yourself out there to find love! 35-year-old Scnorr works as the director of digital media for the New York Public Library.

Massive congratulations to them both. [Read more…]

New Glass Trailer – The worlds of Unbreakable and Split meet (including a ripped James McAvoy)

October 11, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

M. Night Shyamalan pulled another of his trademark surprises in last year’s multiple personality thriller Split, when it was revealed the whole thing was taking place in the same universe as the director’s 2000 movie, Unbreakable. Now the worlds of those two films are coming together for glass.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone, and 2016’s Split, from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.’

Take a look at the new trailer below. The film is due to hit cinemas next January. [Read more…]

First Look At Ruby Rose As TV’s New Lesbian Superhero, Batwoman

October 11, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in August it was announced that John Wick: Chapter 2 and The Meg star Ruby Rose had been cast as Batwoman in DC’s TV Arrow-verse, and that the character would be a lesbian. At first she faced a little backlash from people who decided she wasn’t queer enough, which caused her to leave Twitter for a while.

Thankfully though she never considered giving up on the role, which will see her introduced as part of a massive crossover in December, featuring the likes of The Flash, Supergirl and Green Arrow all coming together. The plan is that she will then get her own series starting in the autumn of 2019.

Now though we get to take our first look at Ruby Rose in character with flame-red hair and full bat-cowl. It’s certainly a striking and rather cool look, which debuted over at THR. Take a look at the full image below. [Read more…]

New Boy Erased Trailer – Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman & Russell Crowe star in the gay conversion drama

October 11, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been some powerful reactions to Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased when it’s screened at festivals, with some saying it misses the mark while others are giving it Oscar buzz. However, with it currently having an 84% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, it’s certainly had a lot more love than hate.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Boy Erased” tells the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.’

Joel Edgerton wrote and directs the film, as well as playing one of the leader to the ‘therapy’ programme. It’s based on Garrard Conley’s acclaimed memoit, Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family. It also stars Cherry Jones, Michael “Flea” Balzary, Xavier Dolan, Troye Sivan, and Joe Alwyn.

The film arrives in US cinemas in November, ready for an Oscar push. It’ll be in UK cinemas on February 8th 2019. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Cola De Mono Trailer – A teenage boy, Chilean heat & repressed gay desire

October 7, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

South America has a great track record of producing some excellent gay-themed films in the past few years. Hopefully that will continue with the Chilean movie, Cola de Mono.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It’s Christmas Eve, 1986, and Borja is a precocious teenager with a passion for film. As his extended family comes together to celebrate the holiday, the combined forces of the suffocating Chilean heat, free-flowing drinks, and repressed desire contribute to the eruption of long-held secrets.’

The film is due for release on DVD and VoD in the UK on November 26th. Ahead of that it receives its UK premiere this week at the Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff on 11 October. To give you a taste of what looks like it could be a rather intriguing and sexy movie, you can watch the trailer below. [Read more…]

Fantastic Beasts 2 Director Says That Dumbledore’s Sexuality Will Be ‘Clear’

October 7, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was controversy a few months ago when Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald director David Yates said that while the movie would feature Jude Law as a young Dummbledore, he wouldn’t be explicitly gay in the movie. This upset a lot of people, with many angry at JK Rowling for having said that Dumbledore was gay, but that as with the books not doing anything to actually show that.

However, now Yates has stepped forward to say that while he may not be explicitly gay, his sexuality will be ‘clear’.

He tell Empire, “In that earlier interview, I didn’t say Dumbledore’s not gay. He is. This part of this huge narrative that Jo is creating doesn’t focus on his sexuality, but we’re not airbrushing or hiding it… the story [of the romantic relationship] isn’t there in this particular movie but it’s clear in what you see… that he is gay. A couple of scenes we shot are very sensual moments of him and the young Grindelwald.”

Indeed, it didn’t seem a coincidence that after the controversy, the last two trailers have included shots of Dumbledore looking longingly at Grindelwald in the Mirror Of Erised – the mirror that shows you what you desire the most. This seemed to be a way for those marketing the movie to show that the characters’ sexuality will be acknowledged, even if it isn’t the focus of the film. (It’s also worth noting that JK Rowling has suggested things may get more explicit in later instalments of what is planned as a series of five films).

Yates adds, “The story [of this film] is about other things, fundamentally, but the story of Grindelwald and Dumbledore, going forward, that is the story. I think people just have to wait and see and appreciate that in movies to come that relationship will be explored much more fully.”
