Iris Prize LGBT Film Festival Announces Its 2015 Winners, Led By Transgender Short, Vessels

October 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

vessels-iris-prizeVessels, by US filmmaker Arkasha Stevenson, about Diamond, a young transgender woman working at a garment factory for little pay, has been announced winner of the 2015 Iris Prize – Cardiff’s International LGBT Short Film Prize supported by The Michael Bishop Foundation. The £30,000 prize will allow Arkasha to make a new short film in the UK.

At the sold out Iris Awards presented by Amy Lamé at Cardiff’s Cineworld and Park Inn Hotel, Lord Glendonbrook announced that the international jury had selected Arkasha Stevenson from the USA to scoop the coveted award.

Lynn Hunter, Chair of the Iris Prize Jury said, “Iris’ 2015 theme was ‘Watch Films, Party Nightly, Repeat and this was nowhere more evident than on the screen.  The standard of films this year was exceptionally high, covering a rich diversity of genres and themes, and this made for some very robust jury discussions.

We had a very interesting, lively and difficult time trying to decide on this year’s Iris Prize winner. We saw many extraordinary films that made us laugh, cry and certainly think. Choosing one from all the wonderful films was extremely difficult but in the end we all agreed that Vessels is a strong, unique and purposeful vision. It evoked issues around equality and exploitation, and transgender and women’s voices are voices we need to be championing right now. With a strong and emotional voice, it tackled some difficult issues in an honest, visceral and graphic way”.

Two other short films reached the final stage of the competition with high commendations. They were:

Hole directed by Martin Edralin from Canada
“Engaging and thought provoking with the opening shot of any of the films we saw. This is bold and challenging filmmaking”.

In The Hollow directed by Austin Bunn from the USA
“A very moving, brave and under-represented story. A great hybrid approach to drama and documentary”.

Addressing the audience during the closing night screening of the winning films, Berwyn Rowlands said:
“I’m thrilled that Arkasha is this year’s winner of the Iris Prize. This is only the second time the Iris Prize has been presented to a woman, the first being Dee Rees during our inaugural festival in 2007. We are already looking forward to meeting Arkasha to discuss her new Iris Prize short!”

And the other winners are:
Best British Short sponsored by Pinewood Studios Group
Closets, directed by Lloyd Eyre-Morgan, was announced as Best British Short. Craig Ford representing the Best British Jury said: “Closets is a clever, original concept. Time travel, teen issues, great performances”.

“This film successfully engaged with its target audience of young people, but at the same told its story in a way that appeals to a much wider and older audience, which is often the benchmark of excellent filmmaking. It also tactfully highlights the similarities and differences between growing up gay in the 1980s and the present”.

Prior to presenting the Best British Award to Lloyd, Andrew Smith, Director of Strategy and Communications at Pinewood Studios Group, delighted the audience when he confirmed that they would continue sponsoring the Best British prize in 2016 but would also increase their sponsorship from £14,000 to £20,000.

Also highly commended were:
Mirrors by Neil Ely
“Well directed, well improvised, great use of space. A raw, honest film”.

Roxanne by Paul Frankl
“A fresh, non-stereotypical positive spin on a transgender character”.

Iris Prize Best British Feature sponsored by Martin Briggs
Fourth Man Out directed by Andrew Nackman is the winner of the Iris Prize Best Feature Award.

Jury chairman Martin Briggs said: “We’ve run a marathon of 14 feature films, taking road trips across Argentina and Australia. We’ve walked the streets of New York, floated over lakes, looped the loop, sucked toes with Larry Clark and got down with the scrum and the junkies.

“Fourth Man Out was a standout performance, directed to engage a contemporary audience with sensibility and wit. A fantastic piece of ensemble acting from the central characters with memorable supporting roles. We felt this was a gay film for a mainstream audience”.

Also highly commended were Josh Kim’s How to Win at Checkers (Every Time) and Joey Kuhn’s Those People.

Performance Awards sponsored by Gay Star News
The performance awards sponsored by Gay Star News were presented to Davide Capone for his role as Davide in Darker Than Midnight, and Sigrid ten Napel, who played Anna in Summer (Zomer).

Presenting the Award Tris Reid-Smith said, “This has been a breakthrough year for features at Iris and our deliberations were tough but the performances we chose represent  the best of LGBTQ cinema – challenging, heart-warming and true”.

The ensemble cast of Fourth Man Out were highly commended too.

Finally, the Iris Prize Youth Award was presented to Closets, directed by Lloyd Eyre-Morgan from the UK. Two representatives of the Youth Jury of 100 pupils from 6 secondary schools in Wales said, delighted the audience when they initially forgot the name of their favourite winning film!

They eventually commented: “This film is really useful as a teaching aid because it talks to young people directly. It confirms that whilst things have changed for the better, there are still underlying issues to address, for example homophobic language and bullying.”

Sexy Max Emerson Is Planning A Film About Homeless LGBT Youth & He Needs Your Help

October 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

max-emerson-hookedYou may remember Max Emerson from his very funny web series, Max’s Underpants, where he and his friends (including the likes of Colby Melvin and Willam Belli) told us all about the difficulties of being an underwear model – while not wearing an awful lot, of course. He’s also an author, singer, actor and a fave on the internet for his half-naked pics.

Now though he’s planning something a bit more serious, as he’s launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $150,000 in order to make Hooked, a film about homeless LGBT youth.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jack is a homeless teenage prostitute with a smart mouth and impulsive tendencies. He battles through a violent world of reckless johns between New York City and Miami, desperately seeking a better life with his boyfriend Tom.

‘The story depicts a harsh world where even good intentions can cause ruinous results. Without pointing fingers at any particular group, HOOKED shows how even the gay community is contributing to the perpetuation of the LGBT homeless youth problem. The allegory is not completely bleak, however; hope is found through the humanity in both the leading couple and (eventually) even the married closet case antagonist, Ken.’

The hope is that half of all the profits from the movie will go to LGBT homeless charities, so that means any donation to the Indiegogo campaign could end up benefitting those in need.

On the campaign page, Emerson says, “You may be thinking…. Max, you’re a self-proclaimed international male underpants supermodel… why do you care about a bunch of homeless kids? Well here’s what happened:

“About a year ago I published a novel called HOT SISSY about growing up closeted in redneck Florida. It seemed appropriate to make the e-book free for anyone currently still in school, or unable to afford a copy. Within just a few days, hundreds of kids reached out, and even shared THEIR stories.

“Turns out I’ve had it pretty easy in comparison to what some of these kids are currently going through. It was shocking how some of these people are being treated just because of their sexual identity. I’m really grateful for the chance to have shared my story, but now I want to use my time to tell some of theirs, and hopefully make their lives better in the process.”

Take a look below at the campaign promo and the video for Max’s new single (featuring Tom Goss), and then head over to Indiegogo to help out. [Read more…]

Race Trailer – Jesse Owens gets a long overdue biopic

October 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

race-trailer-slideIt’s surprising it’s taken this long for someone to make a biopic about iconic athlete Jesse Owens, who famously won numerous gold medals at the Nazi-organised 1936 Olympic Games.

Selma star Stephan James plays Owens (John Boyega was originally cast before he went off to make Star Wars Episode VII), with Jeremy Irons, Jason Sudekis, and William Hurt also in the cast.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens, the legendary athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. “Race” is an enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about one man’s fight to become an Olympic legend.’

The movie will get a small Oscar qualifying run before expanding early next year. [Read more…]

Robert Rodriguez Takes On James Cameron’s Battle Angel Alita

October 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert-RodriguezFor over 15 years James Cameron has been talking about making Battle Angel Alita. He was going to make it before Avatar, and then he promised it would be his follow-up, but then his commitment to Avatar 2 & 3 pushed it back. He still said it was coming though, although not for a long time.

Now though he’s decided that as he’ll be in Avatar-land for several more years, he’s going to hand the directing reins to someone else, with THR reporting that Robert Rodriguez is in talks to take the film on.

Battle Angel is a Manga adaptation about a damaged female cyborg who is revived but has no memories. Once rebuilt, she discovers she has instinctive knowledge of martial arts and sets out to discover more about her past, which takes her into a world of brutal sports and organised crime.

Cameron comments, “Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel. “He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”

Rodriguez adds, “Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films. Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades.”

Cameron will still produce, alongside his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau

A Second Season Of The Outs Gay Web Series Will Be One Of Vimeo’s First Original Programmes

October 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-outs-web-seriesWhile most people think of Vimeo as a video sharing platform with reputation for having users who are more artistic and professional than the more mass-market Youtube, the site is now branching out into original content.

Its first shows have been announced, which Deadline reports includes a second season for the popular gay-themed web show The Outs (which has used Vimeo for many years before being officially backed by the site. In Season 2, gay life in New York hasn’t gotten easier, as ‘It’s been three years since the first season ended. During that time, Jack (Hunter Canning), Oona (Sasha Winters) and Mitchell (Adam Goldman) have gotten a little older, a little more tired, and the tiniest bit closer to figuring out what they want. Figuring out how to get it, though… that’s another story.’ It will debut in 2016.

The Outs isn’t the only LGBT-friendly content Vimeo is planning, as their first stand-up special will be Drag Race alum Bianca Del Rio, whose Rolodex of Hate Comedy Special: Live From Austin, will also feature exclusively on the site.

Lesbian Web Series Scissr Seeks Funding To Complete Its First Season

October 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

Scissr-A-Lesbian-Web-SeriesOver a year ago now we featured the first episode of a new lesbian-themed web series called Scissr. That episode has seen great success, screening at festivals such as The LA New Media Film Festival (where it won best of LGBT category), Seattle Transmedia and Independent Film Festival, and the Brooklyn Web Fest. Out of the actors, Jamie Clayton went on to star in the Wachowski’s Sense 8 for Netflix, and actress Paulina Singer went on to star in WE TV’s South of Hell with Mena Suvari, to be released later this year.

Now creator Lauren Autgarten is looking to complete Season 1, and has launched an Indiegogo campaign with the hope of raising at least $30,000 to make it happen. The plan is to make six more episodes of 10-15 minutes each.

The show is the story of Emily, Corey and Aviva, three gay girls in their twenties who live in Brooklyn, NY. Aviva just came out but doesn’t know a single lesbian, Corey’s too heartbroken to meet anyone, and Emily has already slept with half of Brooklyn, rendering her pool of choice miniscule. Once they connect through a iPhone app called SameSame, these girls will laugh, lie and do whatever it takes to help each other navigate life in this upbeat dramedy about a unique group of young women taking charge of their twenties.

Lauren Autgarten comments, “I set about to make Scissr because nothing I saw on TV reflected the community I was discovering as a newly out lesbian. I wanted to see my world on screen, and the overwhelmingly positive response to Scissr tells me that I am not alone in that feeling. We’ve expanded our team to include award winning writer & director duo April Maxey (who was selected for the prestigious ‘Berlinale Talents’ earlier this year) and Summer Czajak. We have an incredible team, and together with your help we’re ready to bring you a spectacular season 1!”

Steve Zahn Joins War For The Planet Of The Apes

October 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-zahnDallas Buyers Club and You’ve Got Mail actor Steve Zahn is one of those people it feels should have broken out bigger, but never quite has. Now he’s scored a new role, but we’ll only sort of be seeing him in it.

THR reports he’ll don a motion capture suit to play an ape in War For The Planet Of The Apes. Andy Serkis will once more be ape leader Caesar, with Gabriel Chavarria and Woody Harrelson as the two human leads.

Not a vast amount is known about the movie, but returning director Matt Reeves has said, “As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of DAWN. That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with. Where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of it. The things that happen in that story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply. It’s going to be an epic story. I think you’ve probably read that I sort of described it where in the first film was very much about his rise from humble beginnings to being a revolutionary. The second movie was about having to rise to the challenge of being a great leader in the most difficult of times. This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses.”
