Netflix’s Jessica Jones Will Feature The Marvel Screen Universe’s First Openly Gay Character

October 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jessica-jones-krysten-ritter-carrie-anne-mossDespite numerous films from Guardians Of The Galaxy to The Avengers, and TV series such as Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil, there’s one thing that’s been noticeably lacking in the interconnected Marvel Screen Universe – openly gay characters.

There was a small acknowledgement in an episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. where it was revealed that an extremely minor character had an ex-boyfriend, but that’s about it. However, that’s about to change as the first episode of Jessica Jones was screened at New York Comic Con over the weekend, which revealed that Carrie-Anne Moss’ recurring character, Jeri Hogarth, is a lesbian. The character was originally a man in the comics, but has been reimagined as a woman for the Netflix series.

In the episode Jeri is seen cheating on her female partner, suggesting she’s far from perfect, according to Vulture.

There are also hints that the titular Jessica may be sexually fluid, as its suggested in the opening episode that she may have previously had a relationship with a character called Trish (Rachael Taylor).

The show stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica, a former superhero who has reinvented herself as a private detective. Haunted by the tragedy of what happened when she was trying to be a hero, she tries to help people while also attempting to ensure she has enough cash to pay the rent. It’ll debut on Netflix on November 20th.

Ellen Page Gives Her Thoughts On Matt Damon’s Comments About Gay Actors

October 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-pageMatt Damon’s poorly thought out comments about gay actors are still eliciting comment. He caused controversy after he said in an interview, “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”

Although he clarified his comments, many felt he’d missed the point, as he seemed to fail to grasp that ackowledging your sexuality is something straight actors do as a matter of course, and that simply saying you’re gay isn’t revealing something that’s drastically different that should make any difference to what you should be able to play.

Ellen Page seems to agree with that assessment, telling Metro Weekly, “He doesn’t have a point because he related it to sexuality. Heterosexual actors and actresses do not have to go to great lengths to hide their sexuality. Yes, of course, keep your private life private. Protect yourself. Have boundaries. When you’re a public person, you need to think about your safety. But if it’s in relation to sexuality, then no — that’s an unfair double standard. Heterosexual people walk down the red carpet with their partners all the time, they talk about their children…”

However she does acknowledge it’s more difficult for gay actors currently, as if they take a same-sex partner it becomes ‘a thing’. She adds though, “I think that will change. And it’s going to continue to change the more people come out.”

Page was being interviewed about Freeheld, which is in cinemas soon.

Victor Garber Marries His Longtime Partner Rainer Andreesen

October 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

victor-garber-rainer-andreesenA veteran of Broadway, Canadian born Victor Garber has become an increasingly familiar face on TV and film over the years in the likes of Titanic, Tuck Everlasting and Legally Blonde, while Alias fans will recognise him as Jennifer Garner’s spy father. He’s also gay, something that was an open secret for many years but which the actor only confirmed in early 2013.

Now he’s taken it one step further, as he headed off to Tofino, British Columbia to marry his partner of 16 years, Rainer Andreesen. The wedding took place last weekend, although few other details have been released.

Andreesen confirmed the news on Instagram, with the picture below and the message, “YES WE DID! #justgotmarried#elopedintofino #canada@therealvictorgarber #after16years.”

All we can add is, congratulations Victor! [Read more…]

Ben Whishaw Says He’s ‘Baffled’ By The Fuss Over Gay Actors

October 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lilting-ben-whishawThere’s been a bit of a fuss recently about gay actors and whether it’s better for them to be open about their sexuality or not, which emerged after Matt Damon made some slightly confused comments in an interview, that included him saying, “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”

At a screening of his upcoming London Spy, Ben Whishaw was asked about his thoughts, with BT reporting he said, “It feels like a story that’s trying to be drummed up, even though there are more important things we should be talking about.”

“With gay characters being played by straight people, straight characters being played by gay people… come on, we’re actors! I do not understand what the problem is. Actors play all sorts of things. I’ve played murderers, journalists and kings – I’m not any of them.

“The whole thing is a fiction, it’s about imagination, it’s play. I am baffled to why it’s such a big thing. And also, I’m baffled because it feels like we’re in a time where there are lots of gay people, not just actors but in all walks of life, and let’s be where we are. We’re human beings and I don’t understand why it’s really a discussion now.”

Although some of Damon’s comments were indeed taken out of context (particularly people saying he was advocating gay actors staying in the closet), they were a bit problematic. And while Whishaw’s comments are exactly correct for an ideal world, currently there are still issues for gay actors, particularly in Hollywood, where many still don’t believe an openly gay man can be a worldwide a-list star (whether that’s true or not), which limits their options.

Jack Black Talks About Losing His Older Gay Brother To AIDS

October 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-blackJack Black is well-known for his wild comedy roles, but far fewer know about his family life and the tragedy they had to deal with when he was young. The actor has been talking about it with Parade magazine, reminiscing about his older brother, a gay man who sadly died of AIDS.

He says, “I have two gay siblings: my big sister, Rachel, and my big brother, Howard. He was a big influence on me. He took me to my first rock concert. I was 11; he was 23. He was so vibrant, creative, amazing. He shaped my taste in music. [Death] didn’t happen quickly. We all saw the deterioration. He was only 31. So very young. We were robbed of something precious. It was devastating. It was hard for all of us, but it was hardest for my mom when we lost Howard. She’s never really recovered.”

Howard died in 1989, when Jack was 20. He also suggests that having lost his brother has effected how he is with his own children, with a heightened sense of wanting to protect them from pain.

Black opened up during promotion for his new film Goosebumps, a family friendly romp which you wouldn’t think would lead to one of his most open and wide-ranging interviews, but the whole thing is well worth reading, taking in his family, past drug use, meeting his wife and more.

New Eastender Riley Carter Millington Will Be British Soap’s First Major Transgender Character Played By A Transgender Actor

October 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Riley-Carter-Millington-slideCoronation Street was the first soap in the world to have a permanent transgender character – in the form of Hayley Cropper, who was with the show from 1998 to 2014. However Hayley was still played by a cisgender actor, albeit a very good one in the form of Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Now though rival UK soap, Eastenders, is adding an ongoing character who, for the first time in any British serialised drama, will be played by a transgender actor, as the BBC has announced the addition of the rather cute Riley Carter Millington to the show.

Here’s the press release anouncing the news: Riley Carter Millington, 21, will be joining the cast of EastEnders as Kyle, a transgender character. Riley’s casting is the first time a UK television soap opera has ever had a transgender actor playing a transgender character in a continuing role.

Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Executive Producer, announced earlier this year that he was creating a transgender character and he was determined to have a transgender actor in the role. Following that announcement, a number of transgender actors put themselves forward for the role and, as well as working alongside groups within the transgender community, EastEnders undertook workshops to find an actor. As soon as they found Riley, the character of Kyle was developed and created.

EastEnders is Riley’s first television role. Riley’s first appearance as Kyle will be on screen this month (October 2015) but little will be known about his mysterious character for quite some time. Following this brief appearance, Riley will return permanently at the end of the year.

Speaking of joining EastEnders, Riley said “I am extremely excited to be joining EastEnders.  I can honestly say that I have now fulfilled my two biggest dreams – to be living my life as a man and to be an actor. I cannot wait to really get stuck in with filming and I look forward to seeing what is in store for my character.”

Dominic Treadwell- Collins, Executive Producer adds “From Mark Fowler’s HIV to Colin and Barry’s first gay kiss, EastEnders has always led the way in changing audience’s perceptions about ‘difference’ – and ultimately making the world a better place.  It has been my intention for a long time to cast a trans actor playing a trans role – and we have been so careful to ensure that we cast the right actor for the part. I’ve sat in many acting workshops over the years with our Casting Executive Julia Crampsie and her team – but never have we been so moved by the incredible life stories and wealth of talent that we experienced over our several weeks of workshops with transgender actors. The people we met showed us a strength and bravery that took our breath away – and to go through as much as they have while maintaining humour and a positive view on the world is testament to what special people we met.

“In Riley, we have found not just a talented actor but also an inspirational young man whose warmth immediately comes through the screen. And this isn’t about tokenism.  Alex Lamb and his story team have worked with Riley to create an EastEnders character who is fresh and relatable – but also comes with his own stock of secrets and is going to be thrown right into one of our biggest stories for the end of the year. I hope that the audience will take Riley and his character to their hearts as quickly as everyone here at EastEnders has done.” [Read more…]
