New Carol Trailer – Cate Blanchett falls for Rooney Mara in the lesbian-themed Cannes hit

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

new-carol-slide-cate-blanchettCarol was a massive success at Cannes, with many tipping it for a major awards run at the beginning of next year. Todd Haynes’ beautiful 1950s set drama will receive its UK Premiere on Wednesday 14 October at the Odeon Leicester Square as the 59th BFI London Film Festival’s American Express Gala, attended by Todd Haynes, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

With tickets for that event going on sale September 10th, Studiocanal has released a new UK trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

‘While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol’s involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.

‘Based on Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel, The Price of Salt, adapted by Emmy nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy, directed by Todd Haynes, CAROL stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Sarah Paulson and is set for release on 27 November.’ [Read more…]

Krampus Trailer – Christmas gets ghoulish for Adam Scott & Toni Collette

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

krampus-slideYou may never have heard of Krampus, but in some traditions he is essentially the anti-Santa Claus, a slightly demonic figure who punishes bad children while Santa rewards the good. Now he’s getting his own movie, which will be coming to creep us out (and hopefully make us laugh) at the end of the year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Legendary Pictures’ Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.

‘When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.

‘All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

‘The horror-comedy also stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler. Krampus and his mischievous underlings have been created by the combined efforts of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, both renowned for their epic work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and King Kong, among many others.’ [Read more…]

Demolition Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal’s life falls to bits

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

demolition-jake-gyllenhaalIn the last couple of year Jake Gyllenhaal has been flexing his acting muscles in the likes of Nightcrawler and Southpaw and getting plenty of critical plaudits for doing so. Despite pressure from his father-in-law (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Michael Fassbender May Star In The Snowman

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-fassbenderFor a long time Martin Scorsese was attached to direct a movie version of Jo Nesbo’s novel The Snowman. However just over a year ago he was replaced by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

Now it looks like the project is ready to move forward, as THR reports that Michael Fassbender is in talks to play the lead role of Harry Hole. At the moment it’s still early days, but if all works out, he’ll be taking on the part.

Joe Nesbo’s novel follows Oslo detective Harry Hole, a loose cannon who is investigating the disappearance of a woman, whose pink scarf is found wrapped around a sinister-looking snowman. It could be the start of a franchise, as Hole has been part of numerous Nesbo books.

Matt Damon Is Back & Ripped In The First Pic From New Bourne Movie

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-damon-bourne-5After Matt Damon left Jason Bourne behind – saying he wouldn’t return without director Paul Greengrass – both Damon and Greengrass are back on set for a new adventure, and to prove it producer Frank Marshall tweeted the pic above, where Matt is looking pretty ripped.

Not much is known about the plot of the movie, although the film brings back Julia Stiles as Nicky, while newcomers include Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander and Vincent Cassel (as the villain). All we know is that Damon has suggested Bourne will be dealing with “an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” with the plot touching on “spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

The film is due to hit cinemas July 29th, 2016.

Want To Help Season 2 Of The Gay-Themed Web Series Go-Go Boy Interrupted Get Made?

September 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

go-go-boy-interrupted-episode-2It must be Jimmy Fowlie day on BGPS, as we just posted Gay Guys Do Sex & The City, which he stars in, and now it’s time to talk about the Kickstarter that’s hoping to raise at least $65,000 to fund Season 2 of his great web series, Go-Go Boy Interrupted.

We loved Season 1, which was inspired by Jimmy’s own life, and followed his Go-Go Boy character, who discovers he’s seen as being a bit old to be dancing in his underwear in clubs and ends up getting fired. He then decides that perhaps he needed to find a new direction in life (while having fun and being a bit sexy along the way).

As Jimmy says on the Kickstarter, ‘When I first moved to LA, I worked as a go-go dancer and there were so many hilarious stories that I always wanted to write about them! A year ago, I filmed 7 sketches that followed the story of a go-go boy who turned 30 and then got fired from the club he worked at. I called it “Go-Go Boy Interrupted.” It was part of a live show I was doing at The Groundlings in Los Angeles. Some friends encouraged me to put it online, and so I released it as a weekly web series last October.’

Fowlie hopes that perhaps one-day a TV network will pick up the show, but in the meantime he’d love to make Season 2. However, while no one got paid for Season 2, that’s not really an option this time around, and so the Kickstarter campaign has been launched.

You can watch Season 1 of Go-Go Boy Interrupted by clicking here, and if you like that, watch the funding video below and head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Danish Girl Director Tom Hooper Discusses Why He Didn’t Cast A Trans Actor In A Trans Role

September 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eddie-Redmayne-Danish-Girl-slideThe movie The Danish Girl, about trans pioneer Lile Elbe, has been floating around Hollywood for a long time, and over the years both cisgender men and women have been attached to the lead role. That continued with the incarnation that’s finally made in onto film, with Eddie Redmayne as Lili.

There has been some criticism of the fact a cisgender actor was cast in the role, and while some have defended it on the grounds that the movie covers Lili’s transition (without explaing why a trans actor couldn’t do this), now the movie’s director has been giving his reason.

After being asked by Variety about the difficulty for trans actor to find role – either trans or cisgender – he says, “There is a huge pool of talented trans actors and the access to parts is limited. I would champion any shift where the industry could move forward and embrace trans actors in trans and cisgender roles and also celebrate and encourage trans filmmakers.

“In terms of the casting of Eddie, I’m going to say something that would be easier to say if Eddie weren’t sitting next to me, but I think there is something in Eddie that’s drawn to the feminine.”

What he is almost certainly ignoring is the real reason –  the commercial imperative – where in the world of film its far easier to get funding for a project if you have a ‘known’ name. Unfortunately though that leaves trans actors in a catch 22 situation, where they need to be famous to get the good roles, but the good roles go to cisgender people. Hopefully the likes of Laverne Cox can start to change things, but it’s going to be an uphill struggle, especially considering Hollywood has barely even started addressing its sexism problem yet.

Our Brand Is Crisis Trailer – Sandra Bullock dips in to political satire

September 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

our-brand-is-crisis-slideSandra Bullock returns with Our Brand Is Crisis, where she teams up with director David Gordon Green for a spot of political satire, based on a documentary about the 2002 Bolivian presidential elections. The trailer certainly suggests democracy isn’t always the straight-forward and fair system we’d like to think it is.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A Bolivian presidential candidate failing badly in the polls enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the deeply damaged but still brilliant strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Bullock). In self-imposed retirement following a scandal that earned her nickname and rocked her to her core, Jane is coaxed back into the game for the chance to beat her professional nemesis, the loathsome Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton), now coaching the opposition.

‘But as Candy zeroes in on every vulnerability – both on and off the campaign trail – Jane is plunged into a personal crisis as intense as the one her team exploits nationally to boost their numbers. Dramatic, rapid-fire and laced with satire, “Our Brand is Crisis” reveals the cynical machinations and private battles of world-class political consultants for whom nothing is sacred and winning is all that matters.’

The film is due out later this year. [Read more…]

Queer City Trailer – Inside the lives of New Yorkers whose lives fall outside mainstream

September 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

queer-city-slideNew York has long been known as a melting pot of different nationalities and cultures, but less studied is the multitude of queer lives where those living them don’t necessarily fall into any predefined box. The documentary Queer City sets out to help redress the balance, following a group of diverse people living in various parts of the city.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Four decades after the Stonewall riots, life is dramatically different for LGBTQ people. We used to be identified by our oppression. But who are we now? Are we still a community? The city that gave birth to the gay movement has changed, too. What are the untold stories of a culture that thrives in every borough and every corner of the city?

‘Queer City explores these and other questions through the lives of a highly diverse group of men and women living in New York City. The film cannot, of course, represent every aspect of LGBTQ life, and that’s not our goal. Rather, we are bringing together a selection of stories to offer a compelling portrait of new American lives.’

Filmmaker Draper Shreeve told NewNowNext, “I hope the audience will enjoy meeting a remarkable group of people they might not otherwise. I also hope they see how many different ways there are to be queer—ways that cut across gender, class and race.”

You can take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Friday, A Web Series About Being Gay & Deaf, Launches Its Pilot Episode Alongside A Funding Campaign

September 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

friday-web-seriesGay web series have gone beyond solely being about what it is to be gay, and recently there’s been a great interest in exploring the intersectionality of different identities, including LGBT ones. Fridays follows in that vein, as it’s about two deaf characters, who communicate using American Language, and one of them is gay.

The Pilot episode has now been released, and alongside that a Kickstarter campaign has launched, which hopes to raise at least $6,000 in order to get the rest of the first season made.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fridays is a web series about best friends Kate and Michael, who live in Los Angeles and have just undergone huge life changes: Kate is newly married and Michael is newly single.

‘The main characters are deaf and communicate in American Signed Language (ASL), with subtitles for people who don’t know sign language. Kate and Michael are two deaf people who live in a hearing world, to comic, tragic, painfully funny, and joyous results.

‘Whether it is issues of love, money, or ordering a latte at Starbucks, Kate and Michael are two people you’ve never quite met before, and you’ll love getting to know them. Stars and co-creators Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman are deaf. They also wrote and directed the pilot.’

Josh Feldman, who plays Michael, told Out, that the project is very personal, “I grew up deaf but didn’t come out [until] much later, because it was especially frightening to consider myself a double minority: deaf and gay. It felt overwhelming… My real hope is to introduce more deaf gay characters to film and television, because I really needed to see that when I was a young kid, growing up.”

He adds, “With Fridays, we hope to add a new perspective to the entertainment industry that we believe is lacking. Deaf characters in the media often aren’t fully realized characters, mainly because their storylines or their portrayals have everything to do with their being deaf. With Fridays, we want to introduce the world to two deaf people who are funny, complicated, and fully realized.”

Take a look at the pilot episode below, and if you like what you see, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]
