Eric Bana Will Be Charlie Hunnam’s Father In Knights of the Round Table

February 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eric-bana-slideGuy Ritchie’s take on the legends of King Arthur – Knights Of The Round Table – is slowly coming together, and now one more member had signed up, with Variety reporting that Eric Bana will play Arthur’s father, Uther.

He joins Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur, Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Guinevere, Djimon Hounsou in negotiations to play a character the king’s Merlin-like mentor Bedivere, and Jude Law playing the villain.

Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow) wrote the script, which is the first part of a planned six-movie franchise, which presumably will concentrate on different knights surrounding Arthur with each film. There’s still no news on the exact plot and direction the first movie will take.

Warner Bros. has had been trying to make an Arthurian movie for years. Indeed Ritchie was previously attached to a completely different King Arthur movie, which was written by John Hodge (Trainspotting). Another project, Arthur & Lancelot, even got to the point where Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) had been hired for the lead roles and the sets were ready to be built. However the studio backed out just a few weeks before production was due to begin.

Hopefully they won’t get cold feet with this version, which already has a July 22nd, 2016 release date set.

Daniel Craig Goes Skiing In The First Image & Footage From Spectre

February 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spectre-first-look-picIt is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and now we get to take our first look at latest James Bond adventure, Spectre, with the image above and the behind-the-scenes footage below, featuring Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux, Dave Bautista and Director Sam Mendes.

It’s not too revelatory, but if you were wondering of 007 will be skiing in the movie, it certainly clears that up.

However Associate Producer, Gregg Wilson says that the Austrian mountains will provide the backdrop for a massive action sequence, “We have to deliver an amazing sequence and this is going to be one of the major action sequences of the movie, a jewel in the crown so to speak. It’s going to be spectacular and Austria seemed to offer everything that we needed to pull it off.”

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.’

Spectre will be released on November 6, 2015. [Read more…]

Laverne Cox Is Turning Transgender Lawyer For Legal Drama Doubt

February 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

laverne-cox-oitnbLaverne Cox made a massive impact in Orange Is The New Black, resulting in her becoming a bona fide star and being the first transgender person to make the cover of Time magazine and the first to receive an Emmy nomination. She has helped frame the zeitgeist at a time when trans* issues have never been so talked about.

The fact is though, that as successful as Orange Is The New Black has been, it is only available on Netflix and so hasn’t reached the sort of audience a major network show can. She may be remedying that though as she’s taking a major role in the pilot for a potential CBS called Doubt.

Variety reports that show will follow ‘a yet-to-be-cast attorney who gets romantically involved with one of her clients who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime’. Cox meanwhile will be will Cameron Wirth, a Ivy League-educated lawyer who’s both competitive and compassionate. Described as fierce and funny, Cameron’s own experience with injustice as result of being a trans* woman causes her to fight even harder for all of her clients.

Of course getting a pilot order isn’t a guarantee the show will end up on television, but Grey’s Anatomy producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan who are behind the show have definitely made a smart move hiring Cox.

Rupert Friend in Hitman: Agent 47

Rupert Friend in Hitman: Agent 47

It’s only a few years since we had a Hitman movie starring Timothy Olyphant, but as it didn’t leave much of an impression, Fox has decided it’s time for another movie version of the popular video game, this time with Rupert Friend in the title role.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘HITMAN: AGENT 47 centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research – and forty-six earlier Agent clones — endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe.’

The movie hits cinemas this August (as you can see from the banner, it was supposed to be out this month, but got pushed back). Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Cinderella Trailer – Lily James & Richard Madden only have until midnight

February 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

CINDERELLA-character-poster1-slideIn a few weeks time Disney will be unleashing it’s live-action take on Cinderella on the world, and it’ll be hoping it can really build some hype following an underwhelming response to the first couple of trailer.

To help with that, they’ve unleashed a new promo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

‘The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever.’

The movie is due out on March 27th, 2015. [Read more…]

The Samurai Trailer – Take a look at Iris Prize Winner Till Kleinert’s FrighFest hit

February 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Samurai-slideWe enjoyed The Samurai when we caught it at the Iris Prize festival last October. The film comes from Till Kleinert, who won the Iris Prize itself a few years ago for his excellent gay-themed short film Cowboy, which resulted in his making the also very good Boys Village.

What ties all those things together is an interest in the odd and creepy, and that continues with the loosely queer-themed The Samurai.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On the edge of a dark forest, where the fear of wolves prevents locals from straying too far from home, a young police officer, Jakob receives a package addressed to the ‘Lone Wolf’. As the night shift starts a mysterious caller claims the package belongs to him.

‘Venturing out alone, Jakob unknowingly delivers a samurai sword to a wild-eyed man in a wedding dress, who entices him to participate in a bloody crusade through the village.

‘As night wanes something hidden is unleashed to meet the first rays of daylight…

‘Till Kleinert’s genre debut pulsates with relentless intensity, The Samurai is a daring, outrageous and fascinating journey into the sexual heart of darkness.’

The film is out on DVD and On-Demand in the UK from 13th April 2015. [Read more…]

Power Erotic Trailer – Forget Fifty Shades, this is what the world of Gay BDSM is like (NSFW)

February 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

power-erotic-slideAll the straight folks will be heading to Fifty Shades Of Grey this weekend, and while Jamie Dornan is very hot, he will unfortunately be sexually dominant with a woman. However if you’re more interested in the world of gay BDSM, there’s the documentary Power Erotic, which has launched a new, five-minute trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘This documentary explores how power, dominance and masculinity influence human sexuality in general and gay male sexuality in particular. Distinguished academics guide the audience through a maze of conflicting attitudes ranging from our evolutional instincts, to the psychological.

‘Gay men speak out about the power dynamics that influence their sexuality, opening up honest dialogues that challenge our beliefs and reshape ideas on gay male sexuality. No effort is made to conceal their thoughts, beliefs and fantasies on what drives their sexual behavior.

‘Candid conversations, some of which are captured after actual sexual encounters provide unusual access to the psychological aspects of sexuality. It is out of these insightful and revealing conversations that form the basis of this documentary.

‘The film reaches its conclusion pondering the balance between sexual attraction, fantasies and the search for loving relationships.’

The film is currently screening at festivals. [Read more…]

James Franco & Zachary Quinto’s I Am Michael Will Open The BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival

February 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

i-am-michael-new-pic1After its world premiere at Sundance, I Am Michael, starring James Franco and Zachary Quinto will make its jump across the pond, making its UK debut as the Opening Night film of BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival. The BFI has also announced is a new pilot mentorship programme for emerging LGBT filmmakers which will launch at the Festival in partnership with Creative Skillset.

Adapted from Benoit Denizet-Lewis’ New York Times Magazine article ‘My Ex-Gay Friend, I Am Michael tells the real-life story of Michael Glatze, formerly a leading US journalist for prominent gay magazine XY, and also an activist working for LGBT rights. After a profound and life-changing epiphany, Glatze gradually renounced his homosexuality and turned to Christian ministry, becoming outspokenly opposed to queer lifestyles.

BFI Head of Cinemas and Festivals Clare Stewart says, “We’re thrilled to be opening BFI Flare with such strong new work from Justin Kelly straight from its highly applauded and hotly discussed debut in Sundance. This is provocative, probing cinema that avoids easy assumptions and judgements and it’s sure to be a major talking point at the Festival.”

The BFI’s Deputy Head of Festivals Tricia Tuttle adds: “We can think of no better film to open the 2015 edition of the Festival than I Am Michael, Justin Kelly’s audacious and assured directorial debut. This follows the great success of last year’s Opening Night, the European Premiere of Hong Khaou’s Lilting which went on to earn Hong a BAFTA nomination. I Am Michael is an equally powerful new work, and it’s a real testament to the growing regard within the industry for BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival”.

The full programme of BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival (formerly London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival) will be announced on 18 February. The Festival’s 29th edition will run 19 – 29 March 2015 at BFI Southbank with over 50 features and 100 short films representing the best in contemporary and archive LGBT cinema from around the world. BFI Flare is  the UK’s longest running and most popular LGBT film festival with over 22,000 admissions.

As mentioned BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, in partnership with Creative Skillset, is launching a mentorship pilot that will offer five emerging LGBT filmmakers from the UK the opportunity to develop industry knowledge, professional connections, their passion for cinema and an overview of LGBT features entering the marketplace. From March to December 2015, selected filmmakers will have one-to-one support from a senior industry figure who will act as a mentor over the nine-month programme. They will also have access to a one-of-a-kind package that includes a wide range of BFI festival screenings and BFI Flare events, as well as filmmaker-focused events and talks.

The programme is open to writer/directors/producers who have previously screened a short or a feature film in any of BAFTA’s qualifying film festivals or in BFI Flare (formerly LLGFF). Filmmakers will be chosen by an invited panel of industry professionals. The first events in this programme include a series of talks and events within an expanded BFI Flare Industry programme for all of the Festival’s accredited industry professionals.

The deadline for receipt of applications for the 2015 scheme is 23rd February 2015 and applications are available here: http://www.jotformpro.com/LFF/BFI_Flare_Film_Mentorship

New Pitch Perfect 2 Trailer – Anna Kendrick & co. make a song & dance about it

February 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pitch-perfect-2-poster2Things are getting patriotic and a lot of fun in the new trailer for Pitch Perfect 2, which suggests this may be just as entertaining as the first movie, which became a surprise hit in 2012.

The stakes are raised in the sequel with Anna Kendrick and co. heading off to the world a cappella championships – which seem far bigger and more rock ‘n’ roll that you might expect. It’s also great to see Rebel Wilson’s Fat Amy back in action, and it looks like she’ll be just as entertaining this time around.

Along with returning stars such as Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow and Elizabeth Banks, Hailee Steinfeld joins the ranks, with the actress said to have come on board in preparation with a possible Pitch Perfect 3.

The movie will be in cinemas May 15th. [Read more…]

Spider-Man Is Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe

February 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spider-manIt sounds a bit ridiculous that a movie that grossed $700 million was considered a flop, but Sony was banking massively on The Amazing Spider-man 2, and unfortunately despite making more money than most people could ever dream of, it was considered a disappointment.

Indeed its lack of ‘success’ led Sony and Marvel to start chatting seriously about a full-fledged crossover last year (small ones has previously been discussed but never came to fruition), but those talks fell through. At the time most people thought that the whole idea was dead and it was a pipe dream anyway that Spider-man would become part of Disney Marvel’s cinematic universe. After all, it’s rare for two entertainment behemoths to team up in that way, especially as Sony wouldn’t countenance anything that allowed Marvel final say over Spider-man while they owned the rights, which would inevitably cause issues fitting him into their superhero universel.

However now to many people’s surprise it’s going to happen, with the two studios announcing that a new Spider-man (Andrew Garfield is unlikely to return) will appear in an upcoming Marvel movie, before getting his own film on July 28th, 2017. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the assumption is the Marvel film will be Captain America: Civil War, as Spider-man played a major role in that storyline in the comics.

Together, the studios will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger, but Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

To show this really is a collaboration and not something that will see the two studios competing, Marvel has also moved many of its other movies out of the way of the standalone Spider-man film. As a result, Thor: Ragnarok has been moved from July 2017 to November 2017, Black Panther goes from October 2017 to July 2018, Captain Marvel will reach cinemas November 2018 instead of July 2018, while Inhumans is headed for July 2019 from its original October 2018 date.

Sony meanwhile has delayed its Sinister Six movie – which was due to be the beginning of its own Spider-man extended universe. They still hope to make the movie, but it will have to wait until the new direction for Spidey is fully worked out.
