Ben Affleck May Be The Accountant In A New Action Thriller

October 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleckA few years ago Ben Affleck’s acting career looked slightly dead on its feet, with most expecting he’d end up working mainly as a director. However thanks to the likes of Argo, The Town, Gone Girl and the upcoming Batman v Superman, he’s come back with a vengeance.

Now he’s in talks for a new role, as he could be The Accountant, according to Variety.

It’s not exactly the world’s most exciting title, but the movie is actually an action thriller about a mild-mannered accountant who also moonlights as a deadly assassin (and yes, that does make it sound like this is going to be a superhero movie without a superhero.

Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) is the top choice to direct, with Bill Dubuque (The Judge) writing the script.

It’s all a bit of a change, as it was initially being developed for Mel Gibson to direct and later Will Smith was set to star. Now Ben Affleck is interested, and hope to fit it in before he directs Live by Night, which will shoot next summer.

First Pic Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Richard III In The Hollow Crown

October 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hollow-crown-benedict-cumberbatchThe BBC’s The Hollow Crown was a great take on Shakespeare’s Henriad tateralogy, giving us new versions of Richard II, Henry IV, Part I, Henry IV, Part II and Henry V. Now it’s returning with The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses, which gives us Henry VI Parts 1 & 2, along with Richard III.

The first picture has now arrived featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III (before he’s offering a kingdom for his horse).

The great cast also includes Judi Dench, Sophie Okonedo, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Keeley Hawes, Tom Sturridge, Michael Gambon as Mortimer, Philip Glenister, Andrew Scott, Samuel West, Ben Daniels, Ben Miles, Sam Troughton and James Fleet.

Executive producer Sam Mendes comments, “After the critical and popular success of the first part of The Hollow Crown – and seven years after we very first suggested the idea to the BBC – I am delighted to announce the start of principal photography on the second half of this magnificent epic story. Yet again we have assembled an amazing cast – led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Hugh Bonneville, and Sophie Okonedo, amongst many others – under the direction of the hugely talented Dominic Cooke. I’m very excited indeed to see them all bring the rest of this astonishing story to life.”

The War Of The Roses should hit our screens in 2015.

Grind Short Film – Gay hookup apps get their own mini-movie musical starring Anthony Rapp

October 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grind-short-filmBack in January we posted the trailer for Grind, which at the time was looking for crowdfunded completion funding. It succeeded in getting the money it needed and is now available for us all to watch.

It’s certainly an unusual film –  a 35-minute film musical themed around how gay hookups apps have altered how we see the world, and whether we really know who we’re talking to via our smartphones – but it’s a good one. The cast includes Anthony Rapp, who’s probably best known for the stage and film version of Rent (although to many he will always be Tony in Dazed and Confused). Grimm star Claire Coffee also stars, as does the very good looking Pasha Pellosie.

The film has already won several awards and screened at numerous film festivals around the world. However if you haven’t managed to catch it at one of its cinema screenings, you can watch it below. There are moment when it’s a bit over the top, but overall it’s more than worth half an hour of your time. [Read more…]

GLAAD Reports Improvement In Representation Of LGBT People On US TV

October 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

modern-family-cam-mitchIn July GLAAD released their Studio Responsibility Index for 2014, which suggested a mixed picture for the representation of LGBT characters in films released by the major studios, with perhaps more bad news than good. However things are moving in a slightly more positive direction on US TV, with GLAAD’s 8th annual Network Responsibility Index giving three networks an ‘Excellent’ rating for the first time in the same year – ABC Family, HBO, and MTV.

The NRI looked at five broadcast networks and 10 cable networks from June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014 networks, examining over 5,000 hours of programming. Along with the Excellent ratings for ABC Family, HBO and MTV, there were Good ratings for ABC, The CW, FOX, NBC, FX and Showtime, and Adequate for CBS, TLC and USA. It wasn’t all good news asA&E, History and TNT were given Failing grades.

The accompanying Where We Are on TV report counts the number of LGBT characters in the just starting 2014-2015 television season. It finds that 3.9% of primetime broadcast scripted series regulars will be lesbian, gay or bisexual characters, which is an increase from 3.3% last year. Fox did best with 6.5% of characters being LGBT. In addition, GLAAD counted 33 recurring lesbian, gay or bisexual characters on broadcast scripted series, though none of those characters are transgender. GLAAD also counted 64 regular and 41 recurring LGBT characters on primetime scripted cable series.

The lack of transgender characters is still a major cause for concern – especially coming in the same year the Studio Responsibility Index didn’t have a single movie with a transgender lead character – and as a result GLAAD had decided that in order to achieve an Excellent grade in the future, networks must include significant transgender content, not just lesbian and gay.

“Television networks are playing a key role in promoting cultural understanding of LGBT lives around the world, and are now producing some of the best LGBT-inclusive programming we’ve yet seen,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “As they move forward with new programs and storylines, networks must also keep an eye towards diversity and strive to include significant transgender content comparable to those efforts being made by their online competitors, such as Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Amazon’s Transparent.”

Tak3n Trailer – Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills becomes a pacifist (not really)

October 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Taken-3-QuadIn Tak3n (or Taken 3, for those who cringe at bringing numbers into words) Liam Neeson becomes a Buddhist monk, has tea parties and teaches people that hugging bunnies is better than violence. Ok, no he doesn’t, he kicks a lot more ass and does his best impression of Richard Kimble in The Fugitive by going on the run after being framed for the murder of his (ex-)wife. Did a one-armed man do it?

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his “particular set of skills,” to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now – his daughter.’

The movie is out in the UK on January 8th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Inherent Vice Teaser Trailer – Plus a poster for Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest

September 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Inherent-Vice-Teaser-posterPaul Thomas Anderson returns this winter with Inherent Vice, his take on Thomas Pynchon’s novel. We’ve had a couple of images already, but now we can get a far better feel for the movie with the teaser trailer and a debut poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix) ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

‘It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

‘With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.’

The film is due out in the UK on January 30th 2015. [Read more…]
