Matt Bomer Will Be One Of The Nice Guys Alongside Ryan Gosling

September 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomerThey seems to have confused the word ‘nice’ with ‘good-looking’ in the title of the film The Nice Guys, as it’s already got Ryan Gosling set to star, and now Deadline reports Matt Bomer has signed up too. Russell Crowe is also onboard, as is Margaret Qually.

The film is about muscle-for-hire Jackson Healy (Crowe), a recovering alcoholic, and private detective Holland March (Gosling), a current alcoholic, who are brought together by the apparent suicide of a porn star. However the dead woman’s aunt claims that she saw her niece alive and well after she was supposed to have killed herself. March takes on the case hoping to make some easy money, but soon both men are dragged into a far-reaching conspiracy that is rooted in smog and the car industry.

There’s not too much info on who Bomer will play, other than that he’s described as being ‘the heavy’. Qually meanwhile is daughter of a corrupt chief justice, who just happens to look an awful lot like the dead woman.

Shane Black is directing from a script he co-wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi. Bomer will head to the set as soon as he’s finished filming Magic Mike XXL.

The Nice Guys is due out June 2016.

Emma Watson & Daniel Bruhl Head For Tense Chilean Thriller Colonia

September 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emma watsonEmma Watson and Daniel Bruhl have found themselves new roles as they’re teaming up for the period thriller Colonia, which is set during a Chilean military coup in 1973, according to THR.

Bruhl will play the German Daniel, who gets arrested by dictator Augusto Pinochet’s secret police and is taken to a secret place with his friends and family not knowing what has happened to his. His lover Lena (Watson) tracks him down to a sealed-off area in the south of Chile, known as Colonia Digignad.

Officially it’s a charitable mission run by a preacher, but that’s just a sinister front for what is in reality a torture and detention centre from which few people ever leave.

Florian Gallenberger direct the movie, which has already started filming.

Iris Prize Festival Gears Up For This Year’s World’s Largest LGBT Short Film Prize

September 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iris-prize-2014-montageIn Cardiff preparations are concluding for this year’s Iris Prize Festival, the world’s largest LGBT Short Film prize, which runs from October 8th-12th. The year the festival is expanding this year with Jury members increasing from 10 to 30 – presenting 6 awards including the new Best British Short sponsored by Pinewood Studios and the Iris Prize sponsored by the Michael Bishop Foundation.

The number of feature length movies presented over the course of the fest is also doubling to 16.

Festival Chair Andrew Pierce comments, “I always think of Iris as family. Granted a rather bigger family today than we knew back in 2007 when the world’s finest LGBT filmmakers gathered in Cardiff for the first time. We had 7 feature films as part of our inaugural programme, this year we have 16. In 2007 we had 5 programmes of short films, this year we have 10. There is no denying that our family is getting bigger.”

Film directors, producers, writers and actors from all four corners of the globe will be attending the five day festival in Cardiff. Former International model Hen Yanni, will be introducing the screening of Melting Away, for which she received many awards for her portrayal of a Trans person in Israel’s first feature film to deal with a Trans story. Cheryl Dunye is shortlisted for the first time for her short film Black Is Blue and travels from the US to attend the screening.

European films are well represented with seven making the programme including the German offering, The Samurai by former Iris Prize winner Till Kleinert. Following its sell-out screenings at FrightFest, the annual London horror festival, Total Film commented, “The Samurai is one of the most daring and stylish films we’ve caught at FrightFest.” Till Kleinert and his lead actor Michel Diercks will be in Cardiff for the screenings.

As a counterbalance to the horror the festival organisers are delighted to be screening The Way He Looks by another Iris Prize winner, Daniel Ribiero from Brazil, who will be attending the screening in Cardiff. The film is a feature length version of his popular 2011 Iris Prize winning short about a blind boy who falls in love with the new boy in class. The screening in Cardiff follows the London Film Festival premiere, proving the film has mainstream cross-over appeal.

“The Iris family is growing and this year we will have 4 previous winners join us in Cardiff. Till from Germany and Daniel from Brazil return with new feature films as they dominate the world film festival circuit. We also have the company of Tim Marshall, our winner from 2013 who has just finished filming Followers, his new Iris Prize funded short film. And if that was not enough we are also delighted to welcome back Eldar Rapaport (Iris Prize winner 2009) who will chair the Best Feature Film Jury,” added Andrew Pierce.

The 2014 Festival will have 5 independent juries – presenting 6 awards (listed below). The 10 strong Iris Prize jury is chaired by Sara Sugarman, who attends the festival for the first time. The jury members are all individuals who are at the top of their game and have generously given their time to support Iris.

The on-line box office is open and there is still time to organise your trip to Cardiff to experience what everybody is talking about!  http://irisprize.ticketsource.co.uk/

Is The Flash Going To Get A Gay Super-villain?

September 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pied-piper-comicsThe TV series Arrow may be fun (and very shirtless), but its actual LGBT content has been pretty mild, limited to a bisexual female character who for 90% of the time they’ve been only shown being interested in guys. It’s been a particular surprise as the show’s creator and driving force, Greg Berlanti, is gay (and incidentally dating LA Galaxy soccer player Robbie Rogers).

However new sister-show Flash may well feature more gay content. Back in July it was revealed that gay DC Comics character David Singh (played by Patrick Sabongui) would be a recurring character. At the same time Berlanti said another gay character would also appear in the first half of the season, but wouldn’t be drawn on whom.

Now we may know, as TVLine reports that The Pied Piper will be the villain in at least one of Flash’s episodes. The Piper, real name Hartley Rathaway, was one of the earliest openly gay characters in mainstream comics (although he came out long after his first appearance in 1959, when he revealed his sexuality in 1991 it was still incredibly rare).

Rathaway has had a couple of different back-stories, which means in his Flash appearance he may or may not be deaf. Whichever it is he’ll be obsessed with sound and famously in the comics invented a flute that hypnotises people, as well as having various other sonic devices that allow his to manipulate those around him.

He eventually stopped being a bad guy, turned good and at one point also dated David Singh, which gives plenty of possibilities as to how the character can be used in Flash.

At the moment it doesn’t appear the character has been cast.

What’s Of Gay Interest At This Year’s BFI London Film Festival?

September 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bfi-lff-imitation-gameIt’s just a week and a half until the BFI London Film Festival kicks off on October 8th, and it’s laying out its stall right from the beginning that this year there’s plenty of LGBT interest. The festival kicks off with an Opening Night Gala of The Imitation Game, the Benedict Cumberbatch starring biopic of gay mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing.

The film alternates between three significant periods of Turing’s life: the race to crack the German Enigma code in Bletchley Park, the interrogation of Turing after his arrest in 1952 for ‘gross indecency’ which lead to his conviction for homosexuality; and flashbacks to his schooldays and consuming close friendship with a boy named Christopher.

However it doesn’t end there as elsewhere in the programme is this year’s Dare Gala, which feature the widely acclaimed Mommy, directed by queer filmmaker Xavier Dolan. The film focuses on a widowed single mom who finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her explosive 15-year-old ADHD son.  As they try to make ends meet and struggle with their impetuous and unpredictable ménage, the new girl across the street, Kyla, benevolently offers needed support.  Together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.

Other notable LGBT-related titles this year include: [Read more…]

Bad Ass Gays Trailer – Taking a look at gay guys living on adrenaline in action-packed jobs

September 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bad-ass-gaysLGBT focused US TV network Logo seems fascinated by those defying the sexual orientation stereotypes this year. Back in June they aired Gay Lives of Straight Guys, about lady-loving fellows in professions that most people thinks being for women and gay men.

Now they’re doing somewhat the reverse with the upcoming Bad Ass Gays, Christopher Hines’ documentary looking as gay guys who live on the edge, taking on pulse-pounding, ‘manly’ activities and jobs, from ice hockey and cage fighting to the army and mountaineering.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Taking a hard punch in the ring, careening 180 mph around a race track or leading a combat mission, it’s a brave new world for gay men openly pursuing their professional passions, defying stereotypes, discrimination and setting the stage for a new generation. “Bad Ass Gays” is a documentary that tells the personal stories of gay men in “manly” professions, going on the job with them, revealing their motives, passions, joys, challenges and struggles to succeed. The film is a co-production between Rogue Culture and Logo TV. It premieres in the fall of 2014.’ [Read more…]

Hunted: The War Against Gays In Russia Trailer – Matt Bomer narrates a look at an increasingly dire situation

September 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

war-against-gays-in-russia-trailerThere’s been a lot written about the situation for gay people in Russia, with the country becoming increasingly homophobic – or at least the most virulent homophobes feel they have free rein ever since Putin enacted the infamous ‘gay propaganda’ law.

While outwardly banning the ‘promotion’ of anything LGBT in front of minors, the effects have been far reaching, from gay film festival screening being shut down to people being kidnapped and tortured.

However it’s one thing to hear about this from the outside, but now the documentary The War Against Gays In Russia hopes to take us inside the country to see the situation of the ground. Matt Bomer narrates the film, which will air on HBO in the US on October 6th.

The network writes, ‘Homosexuality was legalized in Russia 21 years ago, but gay people in the country have yet to win mainstream acceptance. In fact, attitudes in Russia appear to be moving backwards. With jobs and relationships at risk if their sexual orientation is exposed, most gay Russians remain closeted. As one gay man who lost sight in one eye during a recent unprovoked attack says ruefully, “Hunting season is open…and we are the hunted.”

Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia features disturbing insider footage of homophobic Russians who, in the name of morality or religion, beat and torment gay people, posting graphic videos of their encounters online with few or no legal repercussions. These vigilantes see homosexuality as related to pedophilia, stating publicly that their justification for violence is protecting Russia’s children.’

Leonardo DiCaprio Heads Into The Wild For American Wolf

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

leonardo-dicaprioLeonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way production company are heading into the wild by snapping up the rights to an upcoming book about a wolf that charmed people around the world. It’s a fitting deal in the same week that Leo gave a speech at the UN where he championed the environment.

The book deal was only signed a few days ago, and Hollywood was quick to jump in score the film rights, with THR reporting that the likes of New Regency and Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers also bidding. It’s Leo who won out though.

The book in question is Nate Blakeslee’s American Wold, which ‘tells the story of O-Six, who in some circles was the world’s most famous wild animal. The female alpha wolf was collared and tracked by researchers at Yellowstone National Park, gaining a huge following from not only scientists but the public as well. She was shot by a hunter in 2012 just outside the park’s boundaries, an act that caused howls around the country (she even got an obituary in The New York Times) despite it being legal — wolves were scaled back from endangered species’ lists, so there were new population control measures in place.

‘Blakeslee, a senior editor at Texas Monthly, focused on O-Six (named after the year she was born) and the impact she had on the humans around her, as well as the wolf watchers and nature aficionado who symbolized the conservation movement’s success, and the hunter, a vilified man who remains unnamed to this day.’

It doesn’t sound like it’ll be a very cheery tale, but it could make for an interesting film.

New Predestination Trailer – Ethan Hawke turns time-travelling detective

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

predestination-ethan-hawkePredestination looks like it could be yet another Ethan Hawke movie that’s surprisingly watchable and could do good business, but which probably won’t see him rise back up the star tree. It sees him reunite with Daybreakers directors Michael and Peter Spierig for a time travel tale.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Predestination chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensure the continuation of his law enforcement career for all eternity. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.’

It’s based on a 1959 short story called All You Zombies by Starship Troopers writer Robert A. Heinlein. No US or UK release date is currently set. [Read more…]
