Sordid Lives Trailer – Olivia Newton-John & Delta Burke star in the camp, gay-themed classic

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sordid-lives-slideIn this cult classic comedy from writer-director Del Shores, a gay West Hollywood actor returns home to his small Texas town for his grandmother’s funeral. As we meet the three generations of his dysfunctional family, the hilariously trashy truth of their “sordid lives” is revealed.

Sordid Lives features an all-star ensemble cast, including Olivia Newton-John (Grease), Delta Burke (TV’s “Designing Women”), Bonnie Bedelia (TV’s “Parenthood”), Beau Bridges (TV’s “Masters of Sex”) and Leslie Jordan (The Help) as the Tammy Wynette-obsessed institutionalized gay uncle, Brother Boy. The soundtrack features such country standards as “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “Stand by Your Man,” and “Get off the Cross, We Need the Wood.”

The film is getting a well deserved DVD re-release in the US via Wolfe Video on September 30th, 2014, but ahead of that take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Polari-logo-largeWhile we normally concentrate on film here at BGPS, sometimes we like to dabble in other areas of LGBT-themed culture, and that includes books.

As a results we thought we’d let you know that the longlist for the Polari First Book Prize was announced last week at the Polari Literary Salon at the Southbank Centre. The Prize received twice as many submissions as last year, which is reflected in an exciting longlist of twelve titles, increased from ten.

The Polari First Book Prize, is for a first book which explores the LGBT experience and is open to any work of poetry, prose, fiction or non-fiction published in the UK in English within the 12 months of the deadline for submissions (this year Feb 1, 2013). Self-published works in both print and digital formats are eligible for submission. The winner will be presented with a cheque for £1,000, courtesy of the Société General UK LGBT Network.

This year, for the first time, the shortlisted books will be displayed at major WH Smiths Travel outlets across the UK.

The winner will be announced on 8 October 2014 in the Purcell Room at the London Literature Festival.

Kevin Smith Confirms His Bi-curious Nature After Coming Out Twitter Hoax

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-smithIt seems that whenever a famous person’s Twitter account gets hacked, the only thing the person who manages to take over can think to do, is to come out as gay. Numerous celebrities have experienced this in the last few years, and the latest is Kevin Smith.

A couple of days ago his fans were surprised by the Tweet, ‘I have never told anyone this not even my family or close friends. Before this comes out I want to state that I am a gay proud man. #fear’

While many celebs went into major damage limitation mode after this happened to them, Smith doesn’t seem too bothered, as shortly afterwards he got control of his account back and Tweeted, ‘Not me. Been hacked. Proud to be bi-curious, not brave enough to commit.’

It’s not too surprising Kevin wasn’t that fussed, as he has a gay brother and has spoken before about the fact he can appreciate a good-looking guy.

And we’re sure his wife will appreciate the fact he’s not going to commit to his bi-curiosity.

Will Ferrell May Play Russ Meyer In A Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Biopic

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-ferrellIn the last few years Will Ferrell has been trying to mix big, broad mainstream comedies with more interesting indie fare (much of which have bombed spectacularly at the box office, but never mind). Now he’s circling another movie being made outside the studio system, as he may play legendary b-movie director filmmaker Russ Meyer  in the film Russ & Roger Go Beyond, according to Deadline.

The film is based on how Meyer – who’s best known for soft-core erotic films such as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! – was offered the chance to direct Beyond the Valley of the Dolls by 20th Century Fox.

Meyer agreed, but only under the condition that Roger Ebert, who was then a relatively minor film critic at the Chicago Sun Times, was hired to write the script, partly because Ebert wrote one of the few positive reviews of Meyer’s work.

Unsurprisingly the unconventional and non-Hollywood pairing had huge struggles working within the studio system and with the ratings board, who weren’t impressed by the movie’s sexy shenanigans. It became one of the few major studio releases that was released with an X rating, but the filmmakers were eventually vindicated when it became a profitable hit.

The project doesn’t have a director attached yet, although Edgar Wright has been rumoured, while actors such as Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen are said to be interested in playing Ebert.

Bill Murray Will Be Baloo In Disney’s The Jungle Book

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bill-murrayWhile unfortunately it doesn’t mean he’ll be dressing up in a bear suit, it’s been revealed that Bill Murray has signed on to provide the voice of a computer-generated Baloo in Disney’s upcoming live-action version of The Jungle Book.

He joins Christopher Walken as King Louie, Giancarlo Esposito as Akela, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera and Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha. There’s also Idris Elba as Shere Khan; Scarlett Johansson as Kaa; and newcomer Neel Sethi as Mowgli.

Based on Rudyard Kipling’s novel, the film follows Mowgli, a young boy who is raised in the jungle by wolves, while making friend with bear Baloo and black panther Bagheera. However as he grows his life is threatened by the tiger Shere Khan, who believes that having a grown man in the jungle will end up destroying it.

Jon Favreau is set to direct from a script by Justin Marks. An October 9th, 2015 release date has been set.

Chris Pratt Hits Super A-Grade Hottie Status In New Jurassic World Pic

August 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris-Pratt-Jurassic-WorldThis week with Guardians Of The Galaxy Chris Pratt has become a god to unfit men over 30. He is proof that if you were once a bit chunky and in danger of officially becoming ‘schlubby’, you can turn it all around and go from cute to being a stop-the-traffic super-hunk.

However it seems that his swoon-inducing appearance in Guardians is just a warm-up, as Colin Trevorrow has decided to jump on the buzz and release a new pic of Chris where he seems to have reached new levels of sexiness.

I’m now hoping that after years and years of being written and rewritten, the final script for Jurassic World is simply Pratt standing under an outdoor shower, while some dinosaurs or something (I don’t really care what) happens in the background.

The fact that Pratt is also funny, sweet and humble makes his recent transformation almost sickening – surely no one should be all those things?

Testament Of Youth Trailer – Kit Harington turns First World War soldier

August 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Testament-Of-Youth-pic1Kit Harington sure does seem to get involved in a lot of fighting, whether it’s as part of the ever-shifting allegiances and battles of Game Of Thrones, as a gladiator in Pompeii or in the upcoming Testament Of Youth, where he’s forced to head off to the First World War.

You can take a look at the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘TESTAMENT OF YOUTH is a searing story of love and war. Based on the classic First World War memoir, this is the incredible true story of one young woman’s struggle to survive the horrors of war, which robbed her of everyone and everything she held dear, but was ultimately unable to break her extraordinary spirit.

‘Vera Brittain, irrepressible, intelligent and free-minded, overcomes the prejudices of her family and hometown to win a scholarship to Oxford. With everything to live for, she falls in love with her brother’s close friend Roland Leighton as they go to University to pursue their literary dreams. But the First World War is looming and as the boys leave for the front Vera realises she cannot sit idly by as her peers fight for their country, so volunteers as a nurse. She works tirelessly, experiencing all the grief of war, as one by one her fiancé, her brother and their closest friends are all killed and the pillars of her world shattered. But, an indefatigable spirit, Vera endures and returns to Oxford, irrevocably changed, yet determined to create a world in which such a war can never take place again.’

Alicia Vikander plays Vera, with Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan, Dominic West, Emily Watson, Hayley Atwell, Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor. It’ll be in cinemas early next year.

Into The Woods Teaser Trailer – Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine & Anna Kendrick go fairytale

August 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Corden & Emily Blunt in Into The Woods

James Corden & Emily Blunt in Into The Woods

It’s a bit of an odd choice for Disney’s first teaser for Into The Woods not to really acknowledge that it’s a full-on musical, but that’s presumably to intrigue people who don’t know much about Stephen Sondheim’s classic stage show and who may be a little uncertain about lots of singing.

This may be because Disney knows they’ve already got a tough sell with Sondheim aficionados, who’ve been grumbling that some of the darker edges will be removed for the film version to make it more firmly family friendly. As a result they know they need to draw in an audience far beyond the hardcore musical crowd.

And as with the images released a couple of days ago, they’re also still keeping us guessing by not fully revealing Johnny Depp as the big bad wolf.

It looks very pretty though and will hopefully keep to the spirit of Sondheim’s show.

The movie is about a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) who head into the woods to confront an evil witch (Meryl Streep), whose curse prevents the couple from ever having children.
Along their way they encounter various fairytale characters such as Anna Kendrick’s Cinderella and the Big Bad Wolf (Johnny Depp). Tracey Ullman is set to be the mother of Jack the Giant Killer, while Christine Baranski is Cinderella’s mean stepmother. Anna Kendrick meanwhile is Cinderella, with Chris Pine as her Prince Charming.

Rob Marshall is directing from a screenplay by James Lapine. [Read more…]

SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water Trailer – From under the sea into our world

August 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spongebob-squarepants-sponge-out-of-water-pic1When the SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water trailer debuted at Comic Con, the main reaction of the audience was apparently bewilderment over what on earth they’d just seen. However confusion would only arise if they’d never watched a lot of SpongeBob or seen the first movie.

After all, that film involved the title character using a live-action David Hasselhoff as a surfboard, so after that it should have been clear that any follow-up would be slightly surreal, bizarre and take you to places you never expected.

The real confusion probably stemmed not just from the fact SpongeBob and friends enter our world and turn from animation to CGI, but they then manage to become very unusual superheroes! If you have the right sense of humour though, this look like it could be a lot of fun.

Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in UK cinemas in March next year. [Read more…]
