‘Feature-length, Experimental’ Gay-Themed Film M/M Seeks Funding

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mm-indiegogoThere are plenty of gay-themed films out there looking for crowdfunding, but even with the power of the web, it’s still tough for films that are a bit more experimental to get the cash they need. M/M is hoping to be the exception though, as it’s currently seeking funding via IndieGoGo.

Here’s the enigmatic synopsis: ‘Matthew is a Canadian new to Berlin. He’s come to escape from himself, make a fresh start. When he meets Matthias, he finds what he’s been looking for. Matthias is the new Matthew. Consciously or unconsciously, Matthew begins to take over Matthias’ identity. He cuts his hair, gets a tattoo, buys new clothes. When Matthias gets into a motorcycle accident, the opportunity is too perfect. Matthew is Matthias. In his coma, Matthias’ dreams and memories blur together, merging with the reality happening outside. Interior becomes exterior. Where the real ends and the artificial begins is a puzzle for all parties involved.’

The makers are also keen to add that, ‘Satisfying and challenging queer content remains at a premium.  M / M is not a coming out story.  It’s not a movie about being gay.  It’s not sassy quips and Bellinis.  It’s not about advocacy. M / M is a film and its main characters are gay.’

Drew Lint is set to direct the film, with the hope that if they can get the funding together it will shoot in Germany in October.

You can take a look at the brief promo trailer for M/M below, as well as one for Lint’s recent short film, Rough Trade. If you think it looks interesting, head over the IndieGoGo for more info and to contribute. [Read more…]

Pride Trailer – It’s Gay-Straight culture clash for Imelda Staunton, Andrew Scott, Paddy Considine and Dominic West

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pride-new-slideAfter a great response at Cannes – where it won the Queer Palm – the Brit flick Pride is heading for a September 12th UK release. We had a clip a few weeks ago, but now the full trailer has arrived (watch it below), showcasing this film about two very different groups of people wanting to support the same cause.

Based on a true story, Pride is set during the summer of 1984, with Margaret Thatcher in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. This brings together two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. But as you can see in the trailer, it’s not initially an easy alliance.

The likes of Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Andrew Scott and Paddy Considine star, with Tony Award-winning theatre director Matthew Warchus making his feature helming debut with the movie. [Read more…]

Channing Tatum Looks Moody In The First Foxcatcher Poster

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Foxcatcher-posterFoxcatcher is already seen by many as the frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar – although there’s a long way to go and a lot of movies to be released before it gets any prizes. However it undoubtedly got a great response when it premiered at Cannes.

We’ve had a teaser trailer and some pics – both of which have had people commenting on Steve Carell’s fake nose – and now comes the first UK poster, which arrives via The Guardian.

It just goes to show how quickly things change in Hollywood, as when the film was announced, it was Carell who was the headline star with Tatum as solid support. However now it’s Channing who’s front and centre in the first poster, showing just what a box office draw he’s seen as.

The film is based on the true tale of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), who was murdered by his paranoid schizophrenic friend Jon Du Pont (Carell) in 1996. Du Pont was an heir to the Du Pont chemical company, who teamed up with Dave’s brother Mark (Tatum) to build a wrestling training facility known as ‘Team Foxcatcher’ on his sprawling Pennsylvania estate. The Schultzes tried to get Du Pont help for years before the murder.

Bennett Miller (Capote) directs from a screenplay by Dan Futterman and E. Max Frye. It’s out in the US on December 20th, with a mid-January UK date set.

The Skeleton Twins Trailer – A gay Bill Hader & a straight Kristen Wiig are estranged siblings

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

skeleton-twinsIf you heard that SNL alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were starring in a movie together, you’d expect zany comedy to ensue. And if you heard Hader was playing a gay character, you might have visions of his outrageously camp SNL character, Stefan.

However The Skeleton Twins is a lot more dramatic than you might expect, even if they haven’t completely given up on the comedy.

they play Maggie (Wiig) and Milo (Hader), who are twins who went their separate ways years ago, but when they coincidentally cheat death on the same day, the shock makes them reunite and figure out how their lives went wrong. Maggie starts to re-examine her marriage to nature-loving slacker Lance (Luke Wilson), while the gay Milo goes to visit old flame Rich (Ty Burrell).

The film is due in cinemas later this year, but take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Such Good People Trailer – Michael Urie & Randy Harrison are a gay couple with an unusual problem

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Such-Good-People-slideBack in late 2012 we covered the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the gay-themed rom-com, Such Good People. It’s taken a while but the film is now in the can and we’ve got a trailer, which you can see below.

Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, Partners) and Randy Harrison (Queer As Folk USA) take the lead roles as ‘A young, gay couple who discover a secret room filled with cash while house-sitting for wealthy friends… who die while out of the country’. So what are they going to do about it?

The great cast also includes the likes of Scott Wolf, Ana Ortiz, James Urbaniak, Drew Droege, Tom Lenk, Lance Bass and Alec Mapa.

To Be Takei Trailer – Looking into the world of the gay Star Trek legend

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

george-takei-to-be-takeiBack in January the documentary To Be Takei premiered at Sundance, and now its preparing for its proper US release on August 22nd. Just to ensure we all know why we should watch this look at the life of openly gay Star Trek and social media star, George Takei, we’ve now got a trailer, which you can watch below.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘Over seven decades, actor and activist George Takei boldly journeyed from a WWII internment camp, to the helm of the starship Enterprise, to the daily news feeds of five million Facebook fans. Join George and his husband Brad on this star’s wacky and profound trek for life, liberty, and love.’

He’s certainly led an interesting life, and indeed he’s probably more famous and respected now than he has been at any time in his life – after all, even at the height of Star Trek, he had to stand at the back with Walter Koenig. Now he’s been embraced by a whole new generation, who adore his sense of humour, knack for social media and his heartfelt support of gay rights. [Read more…]

A Third Sex Abuse Lawsuit Linked To Bryan Singer’s Is Withdrawn

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael F. Egan & Jerry Herman

Michael F. Egan & Jerry Herman

Last Wednesday we reported that Michael Egan – the man accusing Bryan Singer of rape and underage sex – had dropped his related suit against TV exec Garth Ancier, having previously dropped another one against former Disney TV president David Neuman. Now the third suit that was filed shortly after the one involving Bryan Singer – against Broadway producer Gary Goddard – has been dropped too, according to Variety.

The suit against Singer is currently still in the works, although the filmmaker says he has evidence that he was never in Hawaii (where the case was filed) at the time the events were said to take place, and a motion to dismiss is due to be heard towards the end on July – presuming Egan doesn’t drop that lawsuit too.

Egan has now found himself under legal fire himself, as shortly after he dropped his suit against Ancier, the executive launched his own action against Egan and his lawyers, alleging malicious prosecution. Ancier says that the suit against him was ‘a “last minute” attempt to take advantage of Hawaii’s extended statute of limitations on sexual abuse allegations and an attempt by his attorneys to “troll” for new clients.’

Those Egan accused may not be totally out of the woods though, as Egan launched suits against John Doe defendants in California last week. While the names of those involved haven’t officially been names, the presumption is that it’s Singer and the other three men. The belief is that Egan and his lawyer, Jerry Herman, realised that it’s going to be very difficult to prove a case against any of the men in Hawaii, but they may have more luck in California. That’s assuming that can get past the admittedly massive, legal and procedural issues that stand in the way of it ever properly getting to court – not least of which is that the statute of limitation has passed in California, so Egan would have prove he should even be allowed a trial in the first place.

Star Trek 3 Director Roberto Orci Open To Having A Gay Character Join The Sci-fi Universe

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac 7 Comments

roberto-orciFor many years now it’s been commented on that while much of the Star Trek universe is about tolerance and different races of humanoids learning to live and work alongside one another, there’s a severe lack of gay people in Starfleet.

There have been LGBT people in the expanded universe of novels, but on TV and in the movies, everything has been very heterosexual. Even when there were inter-alien species coupling, they were always a male and a female. So could things change with 2016’s Star Trek 3?

Don’t hold your breath, but the film’s director, Roberto Orci (who also co-wrote both Star Trek & Star Trek Into Darkness), seems open to the idea. Talking to the Humans From Earth podcast (via Trek Movie), he was asked about the possibility of having an identifiably LGBT character in the film, saying “I would like to see that.”

He added, “It can be part of a character and not be the whole shebang…It doesn’t’ have to be like South Park, like ‘what have we learned today.’ It can be so normalized that it just exists. I agree it can’t be shoe-horned in. And it is not necessary for it to be the whole point of the thing. It is an ensemble and there are lots of people to represent so no one point of view should hog it.”

Of course that’s far from saying it will actually happen, and those in charge of the franchise have been saying similar things ever since Gene Roddenberry suggested gay people could be part of the Next Generation universe back in the late 1980s. However every time they’ve found an excuse not to do it. But who knows, just maybe it will happen this time – even an acknowledgement gay people exist in the future would be a step forward.

The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby Trailer – Jessica Chastain & James McAvoy deal with life from two sides

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Disappearance-of-Eleanor-Rigby-pic1When The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby was first announced it sounded like a fascinating idea, but one that was always going to make the backers worried. The idea was that it would essentially be a double feature – Him and Her – with each movie showing the life of a couple, first from one of their perspectives and then the other.

It premiered as that double feature at the Toronto Film Festival, but at Cannes it became ‘Them’, melding the two sides together into a single, more traditional film. It appears that’s how it’ll end up in cinemas, although the original dual-version may get a limited cinema run and will probably show up on DVD and Blu-ray.

Now the trailer for the merged version is here, which you can watch below.

The films follow a married couple in New York City, who deal with an emotional, life-altering experience. James McAvoy is the restaurant owner husband, while Jessica Chastain is his wife (Jessica Chastain), who goes back to college. Ned Benson both wrote and directs. [Read more…]

Jason Bateman Up For An FBI Wedding Comedy

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-batemanJason Bateman recently completed his directorial debut, Bad Words, and it seems he enjoyed the experience, as he’s already developing another directorial effort, The Family Fang and now he’s signed up to direct and star in a currently untitled FBI wedding comedy for Universal Pictures, according to Variety.

Unfortunately there’s no word on the plot for the movie, and an FBI wedding comedy could go in all sorts of directions. However Bateman will direct from a screenplay by David Bar Katz (The Pest), with David Flebotte (Raising Hope) and Phil Alden Robinson (The Angriest Man in Brooklyn) previously working on the script.

The Family Fang will start shooting next month, so he presumably won’t get around to this new film for a while, by which time hopefully it’ll have a title and plot synopsis.
