National Enquirer Settles Lawsuit Over Man They Said Was Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Gay Lover

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

philip-seymour-hoffmanJust hours after the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, the National Enquirer published an article in which they claimed to quote the actor’s friend, the playwright David Bar Katz, as saying he and Philip had been lovers and this was why Hoffman has split with his female partner. It also said Katz has seen Philip using drugs and that he “wanted heroin and the gay life.”

Very shortly afterwards, Katz denounced the article, saying he’d never said any such thing and that it was all a pack of lies. He also launched a $50 million lawsuit against the Enquirer, with his lawyers saying, “The story is a complete fabrication: There was no interview. Bar Katz and Hoffman were never lovers. Bar Katz did not see Hoffman freebasing cocaine the night before he died, or at any other time. Bar Katz never saw Hoffman use heroin or cocaine.”

Shortly afterwards the National Enquirer removed the article and apologised.

Now the lawsuit has been settled, with the New York Times reporting that as a result, ‘Mr. Katz said he had formed the American Playwriting Foundation, which will give out an annual prize of $45,000 for an unproduced play. In honor of Mr. Hoffman’s dogged pursuit of artistic truth, it will be called the Relentless Award.

‘The foundation and the prize are being paid for by The Enquirer and its publisher, American Media Incorporated, under a settlement of the lawsuit… As part of the agreement, The Enquirer has also bought a full-page advertisement in the main news section of The New York Times on Wednesday. In it, The Enquirer says it was duped by a person claiming to be the same Mr. Katz.’

The exact amount of money The Enquirer will play has now been revealed, but Katzs’ lawyer sais, “It’s enough for the foundation to give out these grants for years to come.” Katz himself will get no financial enrichment from the settlement, although it’s great he found a way to turn something that was rather ugly into something positive.

Adam Sandler, Kevin James & Josh Gad Sign On For Pixels

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A movie version of Patrick Jean’s short film Pixels has been in development at Sony since 2010. However while the short seemed ready made for the big screen treatment it’s taken a long time to find a way to properly get it to work as a feature-length film.

Now though it seem ready to move forward as Deadline reports that Kevin James and Josh Gad have signed on to star in the movie. Right from the very first days of the project, Adam Sandler has been set to produce, but it’s only now that he’s decided he’s officially going to star, according to TheWrap.

Jennifer Aniston is also apparently being courted for a role, but she’s not close to signing on yet.

The film is about four video arcade champions who are called upon to save the world when aliens attack by using the Earth to stage versions of classic 1980s video games. In the original short film, New York City was transformed into 8-bit pixels, with everything from Space Invaders to Frogger attacking the metropolis. It’s now known if real games will feature in the movie version.

It’s not clear exactly who Kevin James, Adam Sandler and Josh Gad will play, although they are set for lead roles, so will presumably be two of the champions.

Chris Columbus is set to direct from a script by Tim Herlihy (Grown Ups, Big Daddy) and Timothy Dowling (Role Models). Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.

Adam Driver Close To Getting Villainous In Star Wars: Episode VII

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adam-Driver
It seems we know the first new actor to join Star Wars Episode VII, as after endless rumours of just about everyone who’s everyone on the planet being in contention for the movie, both Variety and THR report that Girls star Adam Driver in in talk to play a villain in the movie.

Nothing is completely set yet, but Driver is apparently nearing a deal for the undisclosed role. Sources suggest this role may be the role that Michael Fassbender met for late last year and that Joel Kinnaman seem to have tested for it as well. However little is known about the part itself or who exactly Driver will be playing.

Although we’ve known Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would all return, Adam Driver is the first new actor we’ve known will probably be in the film. However it’s believed numerous other roles are very close to being cast, although director JJ Abrams and Disney are trying to keep an absolute shroud of secrecy over the production.

Expect to hear more soon though, as it’s due to start shooting in April/May.

David Fincher Takes On Aaron Sorkins’ Steve Jobs Biopic

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

david-fincherDavid Fincher and Aaron Sorkin had a lot of success teaming up for The Social Network, with the latter winning an Oscar for his work on the film. Not long after that movie was released it was revealed that Aaron Sorkin had been hired to write a biopic of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, based on Walter Isaacson’s semi-official biography.

Sorkin has taken a long time getting it right (he started writing it around the same time a rival biopic starring Ashton Kutcher was announced, which has already been and gone from cinemas), but now it seems he’s ready to movie forward as THR reports that Davis Fincher is in early talks to reteam with Sorking and direct the movie.

Walter Isaacson’s book is,”Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years-as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues-Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

‘At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

‘Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

‘Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.’

Last November Sorkin revealed that the movie will be based around of three half-hour speeches, taking place just before the Apple head announced the Mac, NeXT, and the original iPod. It’s possible the structure may have changed, and that as well as the speeches we’ll get to see footage of what he’s talking about, showing us his life beyond the corporate showfloor.

It’s not known when it will shoot.

Ruben Fleischer Is Staying Overnight For A Disney Family Adventure

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ruben-fleischerRuben Fleischer had success with Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less, but the much hyped Gangster Squad was a bit of a damp squib. He’s found a new film though, as he is in negotiations to direct the family adventure Overnight for Walt Disney Pictures, according to Variety.

Oren Uziel (The Kitchen Sink) wrote the script, which is described being like Home Alone but set in a large toy store similar to FAO Schwartz. It’s about a divorced father and his son who win a sleepover in the shop. However their treat takes on unexpected turn when they have to diffuse a hostage situation when thieves try to stage a robbery.

The movie was going to be made by Sony/Columbia Pictures, however Disney picked it up out of turnaround last year. It’s not known when it will shoot.

Director Marc Webb Coming Back For The Amazing Spider-Man 3

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-poster5Marc Webb jumped up the Hollywood food chain with The Amazing Spider-man, and while he agreed to sign on for a second Spidey movie, it wasn’t known if he would be interested in making more. However now Variety reports that Webb has been confirmed to The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which is already set for release on June 10, 2016.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Jeff Pinkner are returning to write the script for the third adventure, with Matthew Tolmach and Avi Arad producing.

Andrew Garfield is already contracted to be back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and last October is was reported that Paul Giamatti will return as Aleksei Sytsevich aka. The Rhino. Chris Cooper, who plays Norman Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has also hinted that he will be in part three. However no other cast members have been confirmed.

With Spider-man becoming a lynchpin for Sony Pictures (to the point where some investors feel they’re relying on it too much and ought to find some other major franchise) they are also expanding the Spider-Man universe, with The Sinister Six and Venom spin-offs. It’s believed they hope to release a Spidey related movie every year.

Ghostbusters 3 Is Still Moving Forwards Despite Harold Ramis’ Death

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghostbusters-pic1With the news that Harold Ramis died, many thought that would be the end of the long-gestating and perennially in-development Ghostbusters 3 (although Ramis’ long illness, which he hoped to recover from, may have been one of the reasons it hasn’t moved forward before now, as he would have been unable to participate).

However THR reports that Sony Pictures and director Ivan Reitman are still hoping to move forward with the movie, although there will now have to be a rewrite to take into account Ramis’ passing and the fact he will no longer he able to appear.

Last November it was reported  that Sony was planning to start production this spring in Cleveland, Ohio, although script issues had already pushed that back (you would think after more than five years they’d have something great by now). Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, have been working on the script, and will now have to make some revisions.

While it was believed Bill Murray had refused to return as Peter Venkman, some hope Ramis’ death might act as a catalyst to get him to change his mind. It’s also being suggested the other original stars may even be willing to take lower salaries in order to get the sequel off the ground.

Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga Will Be Back For The Conjuring 2

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

conjuring-slideWarner Bros. has announced that The Conjuring 2 is set for release on October 23rd, 2015, giving it a prime Halloween slot. Alongside that news, Variety reports that both Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Soon after the first movie topped the box office a sequel was announced, but it’s only now that things have started properly coming together. Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes, who wrote the original horror/thriller, have been hard at work coming up with the sequel script. While the first film followed a haunting at a farmhouse, the sequel will look at another case the real-life Warrens investigated.

At the moment it’s not known if James Wan will return to direct.

There’s also a spin-off been announced, which will be a prequel telling the story of the creepy doll that featured in the movie. That film is likely to be out this October, although that’s yet to be confirmed.

Fault In Our Stars Director Josh Boone In Talks For The Stand

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stand-stephen-king-book-coverFollowing in the footsteps of the likes of Ben Affleck and Scott Cooper (both of whom have since dropped out), Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is close to singing a deal to write and direct Warner Bros. and CBS Films’ upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Stand, according to TheWrap.

Cooper was the last helmer attached, but he left last November over creative differences.

Although impossible to boil down to a simple plot, The Stand’s over-arcing premise sees a plague known as Captain Trips wiping out pretty much everyone in the world. The survivors then begin sharing a dream of a strange, evil figure, and slowly come together to try and defeat the anti-Christ like Randall Flaggs. It’s basically good vs. evil told on a massive, apocalyptic scale. It was turned into a miniseries in 1994, but despite being much loved by many, the huge plot and ensemble narrative have defeated numerous attempts to take it to the big screen.

It isn’t known when they hope to shoot this long-gestating project.

Acclaimed HIV/AIDS Docs How To Survive A Plague & Fire In The Blood Head To DVD In The UK In March

February 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

how-to-survive-and-fire-in-the-blood-dvd-coversIt’s been announced that two award-winning and critically acclaimed documentaries looking at HIV and AIDS activism will be released on DVD in the UK in March 2014. Following their cinema releases, Fire In The Blood will come out on 24th March, while How To Survive A Plague is released on 31st March, ahead of the BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, which runs 20th-30th March 2014.

Fire In The Blood is the critically-acclaimed documentary about medicine, monopoly and malice that tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the years after 1996. The film investigates how this caused over ten million unnecessary deaths and the improbable group of people who decided to fight back.

The film tells its remarkable story through the eyes of AIDS patients, front-line clinicians, radical health professionals, pharmaceutical company executives and global figures including Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu and Joseph Stiglitz.

The film screened at Sundance Film Festival (2013 Grand Jury Prize nominee – World Cinema Documentary) and its message is clear: despite dramatic past victories, the fight for access to life-saving medicine is almost certainly just beginning. It won the 2013 DOXA Feature Documentary Award, 2013 Justice Matters Award at the 27th Washington DC International Film Festival, the inaugural Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Prize for Political Film, and Best Debut Film of a Director at the Mumbai International Film Festival.

How To Survive A Plague is the Best Documentary Oscar-nominated story of two coalitions – ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment Action Group) – and how their activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made, largely LGBT activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time.

With access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and 1990s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heartbreaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making.
