I Am Divine Trailer – Inside the life of the drag legend

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having opened the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, Jeffrey Schwarz’s I Am Divine is heading towards DVD in the US, which gives us a chance to take a peak at the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘I Am Divine is the story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, teased Baltimore youth to internationally recognized drag superstar through his collaboration with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. I Am Divine is a definitive biographical portrait that charts the legendary icon’s emotional complexities and rise to infamy.’

It’s gotten great notices at festivals, so take a look at the trailer above. [Read more…]

Test Trailer – Life in 1980s San Francisco in the new gay-themed flick

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having screened at various film festivals, Test will be hitting DVD in the US sometime next year. And it looks like it’ll be well worth checking out.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An astutely crafted 1985 period drama set in the gay Mecca of San Francisco, Test lovingly portrays this uniquely exciting and harrowing era as young Frankie (spectacularly lithe real-life dancer Scott Marlowe) navigates gay life in the big city alongside the travails of being an understudy in a modern dance company and his evolving relationship with fellow dancer Todd (the hunky Matthew Risch).

‘As the newest and youngest member of an exciting contemporary dance company Frankie faces a variety of challenges including the homophobic choreographer who commands him to, “dance like a man!” When one of his fellow dancers is injured Frankie must perform in his place. Todd, an established dancer in the same company and the bad-boy to Frankie’s innocent, helps Frankie prepare. It’s the classic test of skill and character. But a very different test looms on the horizon for both of them. As Frankie and Todd’s friendship deepens, they navigate a world full of risk… and hope.’ [Read more…]

Pit Stop Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed Sundance romance

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pit Stop premiered at Sundance, but it won’t be hitting DVD in the US until January 2014. To get us in the mood for the film’s release, you can take a look at the trailer above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this perfectly crafted American drama, openly gay Ernesto (Marcus DeAnda) and closeted Gabe (Bill Heck) grapple with the sad tribulations of being gay in a small, working-class Texas town. This Sundance smash is a truly uplifting love story about male intimacy, the heartache of unsuccessful relationships and the transformative power of love.

‘”I need to get on with my life,” Ernesto pronounces as he kicks out live-in ex-boyfriend Luis. Macho yet sensitive, Ernesto still carries a hopeless torch for his other ex-lover, Martin. Meanwhile, down-to-earth building contractor Gabe seeks solace with his ex-wife and six year-old daughter while pining over the loss of his relationship with Chuck. Trying to find connection amidst formidable loneliness — this is the story of Ernesto and Gabe.

‘Reminiscent of such classic rural gay love stories as Big Eden and Brokeback Mountain — and showcasing equally accomplished performances from its handsome leads — Pit Stop achieves an understated tone of authenticity rarely seen on screen as it shows us a tender, beautiful slice of gay American life.’ [Read more…]

Joaquin Phoenix May Be Batman vs. Superman’s Villain

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joaquin-PhoenixIn the last few years Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t been part of many big Hollywood movies – although it’s not clear if that’s because he doesn’t want to or whether the major studios are a bit wary of him. However now he’s being eyed for one of the biggest, as Variety reports that he’s been offered the villain role in Warner’s Batman Vs. Superman.

It’s not been revealed exactly which character Phoenix would play, although after teases in Man Of Steel, many have assumed that Lex Luthor will be a big part of the film. Luthor may still be in the background though and Joaquin could be someone else from the Batman or Superman universes.

At the moment it’s not known if Phoenix will take the role, but if he does he’ll be going up against Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill during summer 2015.

Michael K. Williams & Zach Gilford Join The Purge 2

December 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zach-gilfordWith production due to kick off in a few weeks time and only Frank Grillo attached to star, The Purge 2 needs a cast. Now it’s getting one as Michael K. Williams, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez have all signed up to star.

No plot details have been revealed for the sequel, but it will likely have a similar setting to the first. The original was set in the neat future world where crime has almost been wiped out, except for a 12-hour period each year where absolutely everything is legal, including murder.

Michael K. Williams most recently appeared in drama Boardwalk Empire, while Carmen Ejogo starred in Salim Akil’s drama Sparkle. Zach Gilford is best known for his role in TV’s Friday Night Lights, while Kiele Sanchez has a role in David Twohy’s A Perfect Getaway.

James DeMonaco is directing from a script he also wrote. The film is due out June 20th, 2014.

Taylor Kitsch Talks Learning About The AIDS Epidemic For The Normal Heart

December 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Taylor Kitsch

Yesterday we posted the first very brief footage from the HBO TV movie, The Normal Heart, based on Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play about the early days of the AID epidemic in New York.

Now one of the film’s stars, Taylor Kitsch, has been talking about how it wasn’t just an acting challenge for him, but also a learning one, as before the movie he knew very little about AIDS in the 1980s.

When asked by Vulture, ‘So how did The Normal Heart stretch you?’, he answered: “I mean, look: I was born in ’81. I had no idea about the whole AIDS epidemic. I’m straight, and playing a gay guy who’s leading a double life, who’s still in the closet, who’s losing his lovers, who has AIDS but won’t admit it to himself, who ends up dying … I mean, where do you want to start? F–k me, dude. It’s insane. The body type, the fact that he works at Citibank, very high up on Wall Street, so learning that part of it and reading an insane amount of books about guys who were leading those kinds of lives, learning about AZT and where it started … I knew probably the surface stuff, but what I learned for this, the education I got, that was another great tool.”

The Normal Heart, which also stars Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons and Jonathan Groff, will screen next May (TBC) on HBO.
