Phantom Thread Trailer – Paul Thomas Anderson directs Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film

October 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago many were surprised by the news that triple Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis was retiring from acting. However, we haven’t quite seen the last of him yet, as he’s reteaming with his There Will Be Blood director, Paul Thomas Anderson, for Phantom Thread, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.’

The film is due out in the UK on February 2nd 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Journey’s End Trailer – Sam Claflin & Asa Butterfield star in the classic World War I tale

October 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘Based on RC Sherriff’s play and novel of the same name JOURNEY’S END is set in March 1918 as C-Company, led by a war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin) arrives in northern France to take its turn in the front-line trenches. Told that a German offensive is imminent Stanhope drowns his fears in whisky whilst the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) attempt to distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and life before war.

‘They are joined by Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), a young new officer fresh out of training excited about his first real posting, and a chance to serve under Stanhope. Raleigh’s naivety serves as a stark contrast to the other men’s impending fear as the tension rises and the attack draws ever closer.’

Saul Dibb (Suite Française, The Duchess) directs the movie, which will arrive in UK cinemas February 2nd 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

EastSiders: Season 3 Trailer – Kit Williamson & Van Hansis return in the gay-themed series

October 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Few gay themed web series have seen the success of Eastsiders. Indeed, it’s difficult to really call it a web series, as while it started on Youtube, it’s since made its way to TV and DVD, got pulled together into a film, had a very successful second season, and scored a couple of Daytime Emmy nominations. And now it’s coming back for a third season.

The trailer for that third instalment has now arrived. In the new season, familiar faces such as Kit Williamson and Van Hansis will be joined this time around by the likes of COnstance Wu, Willam Belli, Stephen Guarino, Colby Keller and WIlson Cruz.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Season 2 of the Daytime Emmy nominated series “EastSiders,” (Outstanding Digital Daytime Drama Series) left Cal (Kit Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis, Daytime Emmy nominee for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Digital Daytime Drama Series) determined to make things work, despite some confusing developments in their newly monogomish relationship.

‘After a challenging year in New York City, the guys hit the road back wet to Los Angeles to pick up the pieces of their old life, but nothing can prepare them for the unexpected twists and turns they’ll face on the journey home. As they travel west, their tumultuous relationship is tested by an empty bank account, arguments about the future and an encounter with a handsome drifter that tempts them to once again redraw the map of their relationship. Will this be the trip of their lives, or the end of the road?’

“It’s been a whirlwind year shooting the new season of EastSiders on location in 16 states, and we’re beyond excited to share six new episodes with everyone this November,” Williamson comments (via EW), “It’s also been incredible to take the show on the road and meet so many fans at festivals across the country, and we are thrilled to bring an exclusive preview screening of the first episode to NewFest in New York this Saturday.”

The first episode screens as part of New York’s Newfest on October 21st, with everyone else getting to see it when it’s released on various digital platforms (iTunes, Google Play etc.) and DVD from October 28th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

12 Strong Trailer – Chris Hemsworth does modern warfare on horseback

October 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For hundreds of years horses were a central part of warfare. However, most of us would have thought that with all the tecknology and money at the disposal of the US military, they wouldn’t have much time for horses in combat anymore. However, 12 Strong (previously known as Horse Soldiers) tells the true tale of a group of US Special Forces who went into Afghanistan on horseback shortly after 9/11 in order to hunt Taliban terrorists.

Here’s the synopsis: ’12 Strong is set in the harrowing days following 9/11 when a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Nvid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans—accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare—must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does
not take prisoners.’

The film is due to hit cinemas early next year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

I, Tonya Teaser Trailer – Margot Robbie & Sebastian Stan ice skate and get involved in violent sabotage

October 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the 1990s Tonya Harding was a top figure skater, but rather than her achievments on the ice, she’s now mainly remembered for being linked to an attack on her rival, Nancy Kerrigan, who was her main competition on the US team. Margot Robbie is now bringing the story to life with I, Tonya, which has released its first teaser trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on unbelievable but true events, I, TONYA is the darkly comedic tale of American figure skater Tonya Harding and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy has forever been defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived and worse-executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie’s I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.’

I, Tonya is getting an Oscar-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles from December 8th, 2017. It should arrive in the UK early next year. Take a look at the teaser trailer below. [Read more…]

Princess Cyd Trailer – A 16-year-old girl’s life changes one summer in the lesbian-themed film

October 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party was one on the more interesting gay-themed films released in 2016. Now the director of that movie, Stephen Cone, is returning with a new film, Princess Cyd, which recently screened at the London FIlm Festival.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘PRINCESS CYD follows 16-year-old athlete Cyd Loughlin (Jessie Pinnick) while visiting her novelist aunt (Rebecca Spence) in Chicago over the summer. Eager to escape life with her depressive single father, Cyd falls for a girl in the neighborhood, while she and her aunt gently challenge each other in the realms of sex and spirit.’

Wolfe will release the film in New York & Chicago on November 3rd, following by Los Angeles on December 1st. It should arrive on DVD & VoD in the US on December 5th. Take a look at the trailer for the lesbian-themed movie below. [Read more…]

Fresh Look At Rami Malek As Freddie Mercury In Upcoming Queen Biopic

October 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we got our first look at Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. He cut an impressive singer as the legendary singer, even if he couldn’t quite match the luxuriant chest hair of the real Mercury.

Now director Bryan Singer has shared another shot from the set, adding on Instagram, ‘Couldn’t help myself and had to post this iPhone pic’.

It’s believed the film looks at Queen’s rise to world conquering rockers, ending with the band’s triumphant performance at Live Aid in 1985. Alongside Malek as Mercury will be Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, Joe Mazello as John Deacon and Gwilym Lee as Brian May. The likes of Mike Myers and Allen Leech will also star, while Aaron McCusker will play Mercury’s boyfriend, Jim Hutton. The film is set for a Christmas 2018 release.

Starring: Various
Director: Various
Running Time: Various
Certificate: NR

For the last few years Big Gay Picture Show has tried to cover the wonderful Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff as it happened, with reviews being posted while the fest was still happening. However, this year I had the honour of being part of the International Jury, so as a result we decided to wait until the festival was over before we posted our reviews of the 35 shorts that were in contention for the £30,000 prize.

So what did I think? Take a look below at my thoughts on the first 11 short films (presented in screening order – opinions are mine and do not necessarily reflect the thoughts of the overall jury).

The Wound Trailer – Controversial gay-themed film follows a young man’s coming of age

October 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wound has gained a strong reputation and plenty of awards on the film festival circuit, including winning the Grand Jury Award at Outfest. However, it’s also raised a little controversy, with the King of the amaXhosa people questioning whether it reveals too much that about their male coming-of-age rituals, which their culture believes should be kept secret.

The movie follows Xolani, a lonely factory worker, who travels to the rural mountains with the men of his community to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood. When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best-kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel as he tries to better understand his own sexuality.

Peccadillo Pictures will release the film in the UK early next year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
