The Double Trailer – Take a look at Jesse Eisenberg in Richard Ayoade’s movie

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Richard Ayoade impressed many when he turned from comedy actor to director with Submarine. Now he’s got his follow-up coming, which is perhaps a little more ambitious as it stars Jesse Eisenberg and if based on a story by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Dostoyevsky’s tale is about a Russian government clerk whose life unravels when what he believes is a doppelganger of himself – who has the same name and history – begins working in his office. The film has been described as ‘Fight Club for bureaucrats’. Ayoade has promised something funny, frightening and dream-like, a reflection on loneliness and our need to be loved.

Now we can take our first look with a 90-second trailer. No release date has been set yet. [Read more…]

Robocop Trailer – We can finally get a good look at Joel Kinnaman in the classic role

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If everything has gone to the original plan, the remake of Robocop would have already been and gone from cinema. However then is got pushed back until February 2014 (which to be honest doesn’t bode well, as February is a bit of a film dumping ground).

However new we can get our first proper look at Joel Kinnaman as the half-man, half-robot, who stars alongside Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Abbie Cornish, with Jose Padhila directing. And to be honest, it doesn’t look too bad.

Here’s the official plot synopsis: ‘In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years – and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.’

The trailer is embedded above and you can also take a look at some new images below. [Read more…]

Tommy Lee Jones Wants To Remake John Wayne’s The Cowboys

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tommy-lee-jonesTommy Lee Jones’s directing career has been sporadic. He made the TV movie Good Old Boys in 1995, then didn’t make another film until The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada in 2005. There was a six year gap until his HBO flick The Sunset Limited, and now he’s got The Homesman in post-production.

It seems he wants to helm another film fairly quickly, as Variety reports that Jones is developing a remake of The Cowboys. The 1972 flick was on of John Wayne’s final movies, who starred alongside Bruce Dern and Western stalwart Slim Pickens.

The movie is about ‘a rancher who is forced to train a group of boys and get a herd to market on time to avoid financial ruin after his cattle drivers leave to look for gold’. There’s no news on exactly what direction Jones will take with the movie or indeed if he’s thinking of starring.

Joel Edgerton To Star In Shantaram, Taking Over From Johnny Depp

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joel-edgertonJoel Edgerton’s star is certainly rising in Hollywood, and now he’s big enough that he’s able to take over roles from Johnny Depp (although only once Depp has left them behind). Deadline reports that Edgerton has now replaced Depp in Shantaram, which is quite surprising as it was once Johnny’s pet project.

However Depp’s still involved as while he’s decided not to star, he still intends to produce and personally courted Edgerton to take on the part.

Shantaram is an adaptation of the Gregory David Roberts novel about ‘a remarkable protagonist who, at the time the book became a sensation in Hollywood, was said to have been modeled after the author in a thinly veiled memoir. He starts as an Australian heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of India and eventually uses gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan.’

Eric Roth wrote the script but at the moment there’s no director (Peter Weir was once involved but he’s long gone).

Tom Hiddleston Is Going To Crimson Peak, Replacing Benedict Cumberbatch

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hiddlestonA few days ago, Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out of Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming Crimson Peak. The director and Legendary Pictures have moved fast to find a replacement – even though it doesn’t start shooting until next February – as Tom Hiddleston has stepped in to the vacant role.

Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska are also attached to star in this haunted house thriller, although no specific story or character details have been revealed at this time. Del Toro has promised it will be scary and very different from any of his English-language films.

Guillermo will directing from a screenplay he is currently rewriting with Lucinda Coxon, based on an original draft the director co-wrote with Matthew Robbins.

Dane DeHaan Will Be James Dean In Life, With Robert Pattinson As His Friend

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dane-dehaan2Plenty of actors have played James Dean on screen over the years, and if you were going to pick which of Chronicle’s Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson was most likely to take on the legend, you might have thought the latter. However while both have signed up for the movie Life, it’s DeHaan who’ll be the Rebel Without A Cause star, according to ScreenDaily.

The movie is a biopic about Dean and the friendship he formed with Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson). Stock was an up-and-coming photographer who took a gig in the early 1950s with the Magnum agency to shoot an emerging actor called James Dean.

The two men soon connected, with their friendship being charted through the iconic photos taken over the course of their friendship, which included a road trip from Los Angeles to New York and Indiana. This trip occurred just before Dean became a star. A few months later, he died in a fatal car accident.

Anton Corbijn is directing the movie from a script by Luke Davies.

It’s not known if the film will suggest Dean was bisexual (as many believe he was), although with DeHaan’s next film getting homoerotic with Daniel Radcliffe in Kill Your Darlings, the young actor probably wouldn’t be against going period gay again.

Sophie Cookson Up For Matthew Vaughn’s The Secret Service

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sophie-CooksonMatthew Vaughn is planning to shoot his latest graphic novel adaptation, The Secret Service, soon. Now he’s got a female lead, as relative newcomer Sophie Cookson has signed up, according to Variety. Vaughn apparently considered the likes  Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote for the role, but he wanted a fresh face.

Indeed that seems to be his strategy for most of the younger faces in the movie, as Taron Egerton landed the young male lead last month, despite not having a huge amount of professional acting experience.

Colin Firth is set to play a veteran MI6 spy who takes his nephew Gary (Taron Egerton) under his wing. He hopes that mentoring the young man in the ways of covert affairs will put him on the straight and narrow. Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine also star.

Matthew Vaughn is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jane Goldman, which is adapted from the comic book series created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Production is slated to begin sometime this autumn.

Dwayne Johnson Wants To Be The Fall Guy For Director McG

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dwayne-johnsonDwayne Johnson is currently on-set making Hercules with director Brett Ratner, and soon he’ll be heading off to the Fast & Furious set, but he’s already thinking ahead. THR reports that Johnson is in talks to star in movie version of the 80s TV show The Fall Guy for Hyde Park Entertainment and WWE Studios, with McG in negotiations to direct and produce.

The original Fall Guy series ran for five seasons from 1981 to 1986, starring Lee Majors as Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers, who uses his skills to moonlight as a bounty hunter when he is not on set. He was joined by his cousin (Douglas Barr) and an attractive stuntwoman (Heather Thomas) on his missions, which normally involved transferring a movie stunt to his work as a bounty hunter.

The film version project had been in the works for several years, first at Warner Bros. and then at DreamWorks. It was with the latter that in 2011 Nicolas Cage was set to star with Martin Campbell attached to direct, but that version never happened.

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) wrote the screenplay, although it’s not clear when it might shoot.

John Barrowman Gives An Epic Speech On Marriage Equality

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sometimes John Barrowman just seems like he’s out to shock, amuse and entertain, but just occasionally comes out with something great – either incredibly funny or incredibly smart. He was on the latter form at Dragon*Con, where he was asked about his recent marriage.

The question set Barrowman off talking about what it meant to him and how he’s felt married since the day he first got a mortgage with partner, Scott Gill. Although he was more than happy to officially tie the knot a couple of month ago.

He also got onto the fact that being gay is not a choice, seemingly arguing against opponents of marriage equality, saying , “No, it’s not a choice. I live this, and I know a lot of you live it.”

Oh, and he was wearing a ‘legalise gay’ t-shirt while doing it, which you gotta love. You can take a look at the speech above. [Read more…]

Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Fugit & More On For David Fincher’s Gone Girl

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harrisDavid Fincher’s is gearing up to shoot his adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel Gone Girl, and he’s busy filling out the cast, with Deadline reporting that Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit and Carrie Coon are all set to join the movie.

The film is about the husband (Ben Affleck) of a woman (Rosamund Pike) who goes missing on her fifth wedding anniversary. Inevitably the hubby becomes the primary suspect in her mysterious disappearance. Initially the wife seems like a pretty average person, but things change as we learn more about her and her husband’s relationship.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film works, as the novel alternates between the husband after the disappearance and the wife’s diary of their crumbling marriage. Presumably this idea will be folded into the movie somehow.

Neil Patrick Harris is near a deal to play Desi Collins, the wife’s former boyfriend, whose creepy behaviour when they when together makes him a suspect. Tyler Perry will be Tanner Bolt, the attorney who ends up representing Affleck’s character. Dickens and Fugit will play the lead detectives who investigate the case, while Coon will play Affleck’s character’s twin sister, Go.

The movie shoots this autumn, with a release towards the end of next year expected.
