Bradley Manning Movie Already Being Planned By Alex Gibney

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bradley-ManningBradley Manning may only have been found partially guilty yesterday, but as Variety reports, Hollywood is already looking at making a movie about the gay former soldier.

Last year Oscar-winning documaker Alex Gibney and producer Marc Shmuger, the filmmakers behind acclaimed doc, We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, optioned the rights to Denver Nicks’ book Private: Bradley Manning, WikiLeaks, and the Biggest Exposure of Official Secrets in American History. Now that the verdict is in, they’re looking for a writer to turn it into a feature film.

Manning, who leaked hundreds of thousands of secret documents to Wikileaks, was found guilty of 20 charges, including espionage and theft, but acquitted of aiding the enemy, the most serious charge. He could still face a sentence of over 100 years though.

Gibney commented, “I hope that Judge Lind will be lenient in her sentence, taking into consideration Manning’s intent, his willingness to take responsibility for his actions, and the outrageously abusive treatment he has received at the hands of the Obama Administration.”

It’s been alleged that while awaiting court martial, Manning was kept completely isolated from other people and at time deprived of clothing (supposedly as he was seen as a suicide risk), although after international outrage his imprisonment conditions improved. He’s also faced accusations that his desire to reveal what he saw as crimes being perpetrated by the US was the result of gender dysphoria, based on a letter he sent to a gender counsellor where he expressed that he felt female (although no one’s done a good job of saying why one is linked to the other).

Hopefully the film will also look at the problems he faced as a gay soldier before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed, and the isolation he faced in the army, trying to open about who he was even before he was allowed to.

Matt Dallas & Friends Are Raising Money For Thunder Road Film

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actor Matt Dallas may have come out of the closet, but that doesn’t mean he’s now only interested in stereotypically gay role. Nope, there are no hairdressers or florists in his near future. Instead he’s teamed up with his friends, Charlie Bewley and Steven Grayhm, to come up with the script for Thunder Road, which looks at life after war.

Now they’ve launched a KickStarter, hoping to raise a gargantuan $750,000 to get the movie made.

The film follows, ‘the story of returning U.S. soldier SGT. CALVIN COLE (played by Steven) whom we meet in present day Detroit as a troubled veteran who suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Initially resistant to the VA system COLE must find a way to assimilate back into civilian life before he ends up dead or in prison.

‘Through his rekindled friendship with his estranged childhood friend PFC. DARRYL SPARKS (played by Matt) who he served on the “buddy system” with and his newly formed relationship with a doctor at the VA Medical Center, COLE finds redemption and salvation through sharing his captivating experience as a combat infantryman. The film also explores the psychological repercussions of war and seeks answers to the growing epidemic of PTSD and tbi in returning soldiers.

‘Thunder Road also shows the allied forces involvement in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom as we intertwine COLE’s story with CPT. CHARLES RHODES (played by Charlie), a Sandhurst educated Captain of the British Army who we learn has crossed paths with COLE and SPARKS during their service in the middle east.’

Steven first began writing the script back in 2003, but it’s only after he starred alongside Dallas on Wyatt Earp’s Revenge that they all started working together to make it a reality.

It sounds like an interesting film, so to find out more or pledge some money, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Lone Survivor Trailer – Mark Wahlberg, Emile Hirsch & Taylor Kitsch are under fire in Afghanistan

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lone Survivor looks like it might be an interesting one and Universal obviously agree, as they slotted it in for a prime Oscar push, with a limited US release around Christmas before it goes wide next January. Now we get our first look at the Peter Berg movie, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, Eric Bana, Emile Hirsch and Alexander Ludwig.

The movie is based on a failed 2005 mission, Operation Red Wing, which tasked four members of SEAL Team 10 (Wahlberg, Hirsch, Foster, Kitsch) to kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. However they were quickly compromised and came under attack. As the title suggests, it didn’t go well.

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa Trailer – Johnny Knoxville puts on some craggy make-up

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many were surprised a couple of weeks ago when it was announced a new Jackass movie was on the way, especially as it had already been shot and far enough down the line that Paramount slotted it into an October 25th release date (which has been vacated when they decided to delay Paranormal Activity 5).

Now the trailer for the movie has arrived, showing us that this is slightly different to previous movie. Johnny Knoxville puts of his Irving Zisman old-man make-up for movie, which will be partly improvised and partially scripted. As the trailer shows though, it’s still crammed with Jackass-style madness.

Here’s the synopsis: ’86 year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companions, his 8 year-old Grandson Billy in “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.” This October, the signature Jackass character Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicoll) will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on camera.

‘Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places and situations that give new meaning to the term childrearing. The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens.

‘Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy.’ [Read more…]

James Cameron Hires Josh Friedman To Help With The Avatar 2 Script

Sam Worthington in Avatar

Sam Worthington in Avatar

James Cameron has been working on Avatar 2 & 3 ever since the first film hit it big, but it’s only fairly recently he got properly busy on the script (he’d spent most of the time getting the technical side ready). Now he’s decided to draft in a little help, as The Wrap reports that he’s hired Josh Friedman to help polish the screenplay for the second movie.

Friedman has a history of following on from Cameron’s work, as he created TV’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (a show it was though Cameron wasn’t too thrilled about when it started airing).

Nobody has confirmed the story yet, but it’s not a surprising development as it’s known Cameron brought in help on the first film, and with Fox still pushing for a later 2015 release for Avatar 2, they need to get the screenplay ready as soon as possible, as filming will have to begin relatively quickly.

Extended Elysium Trailer – Fresh look at the Matt Damon sci-fi

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new, longer trailer for Elysium has arrived, which gives us a great feel for the look and plot of Neill Blomkamps’s movie. It certainly look pretty cool, with great visuals and an interesting idea behind it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.’

Neill Blomkamp’s film hits US cinemas on August 9th and the UK on August 26th. [Read more…]

Sandra Bullock Is Lost In Space In A New Gravity IMAX Poster

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gravity-imax-posterLast week Warner Bros really ramped up the promotion of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity with a trio of single-shot trailers that showed off the director’s attempt to tell the tale with as few cuts as possible (see them here and here). Now an IMAX poster has arrived, designed to show that perhaps this is a movie you need to see on a massive screen (especially if Sandra Bullock is going to be that tiny in it).

The movie sees George Clooney and Sandra Bullock getting into immense amounts of trouble when their shuttle is hit by debris from a satellite the Russians have been trying to decommission. Bullock is sent flying off into space, with seemingly no way to get back to Earth – especially as there are communication troubles.

It’s out in October.
