The Happy Sad Clip – New York relationships get complex in the LGBT-themed film

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Modern relationship are complicated, I think most people agree with that, and so does filmmaker Rodney Evans, whose latest movie, The Happy Sad, opens in select US cinemas in August 16th. Now a new clip, initially provided to Towleroad, gives us a look at the movie.

The film follows ‘Two young couples in New York – one black and gay, one white and heterosexual – find their lives intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy.’

The film previously screened at San Francisco’s Frameline37 and LA’s Outfest, where it got a good response. Take a look at the clip above and the trailer below.

Sam Claflin Gets A Shirtless New Hunger Games: Catching Fire Pic

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hunger-games-catching-fire-sam-claflin-shirtless
While we met most of the main Hunger Games players in the first film, one on the new players in Catching Fire who becomes increasingly important is Finnick Odair, a former champion beloved by the women of the Capitol. However while he initially appears arrogant and entitled, he slowly reveals a more complex character.

Now we’ve got a brand new image of Odair, as played by Sam Claflin, from the movie, and he’s shirtless!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.’

The film’s due out November 22nd.

And if you want to see the shirtlessness in motion, you can see it in the recently released new trailer below. [Read more…]

Sacha Baron Cohen Out Of Freddie Mercury Biopic

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sacha-baron-cohen-brunoFor quite a long time now, Sacha Baron Cohen has been attached to play Freddie Mercury in a biopic of the Queen lead singer. However now Deadline reports that Cohen has exited the movie, due to creative differences with the remaining members of the legendary British band.

Cohen seemingly felt the band members were trying to water down the story, as they preferred a PG rated movie about Queen, while Cohen wanted a ‘gritty R-rated tell-all centered around the gifted gay singer’. There were also crew issues, as Cohen apparently tried to bring in top names such as screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen), as well as talking to directors like David Fincher and Tom Hooper. However none were approved by the band, who have both script and director approval .

Hooper, the Oscar-winning helmer of The King Speech and Les Miserables, was apparently ready to sign up, but due to the creative differences, no formal offer could be made.

Considering the life Mercury lived, you can understand why Cohen stood his ground, as a sanitised version isn’t any good to anyone – indeed it’s sometimes a shame that the remaining members of Queen can’t remember who they used to be, instead of the rather dull middle-aged men they are today (especially as they still sometimes seem uncomfortable fully acknowledging Mercury’s sexuality). However, given the resemblance between Sacha and Freddie, it’s difficult to imagine anyone else taking on the role.

Matt Damon Gets A Close-Up In A New Elysium Poster

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elysium-poster2
I’m presuming they think Matt Damon will be a big draw for Elysium, or otherwise there’s not much point releasing a poster that’s essentially just a giant Damon face. It’s very nice, although doesn’t exactly give much info about the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium.

‘That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.’

The film hits US cinemas on August 9th and the UK on August 21st.

Spike Lee Turns To Kickstarter For His Next Film

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spike-leeSpike Lee may well be a well-known name, but due to the fact he likes to make potentially contentious movies (at least in terms of how much they’ll gross), he often has difficulty finding funding for his movie. He’s now trying to get around that by launching a Kickstarter campaign for his next movie, which is currently known simply as The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint.

Lee is hoping to raise $1.25 million from the crowd-sourcing site. While most campaign are at pains to give as many details about the film as possible, Lee is keeping his cards close to his chest, other saying it’s about human beings who are addicted to blood. “Funny, sexy, and bloody (and it’s not ‘Blacula’),” he adds.

The director also spoke to Variety about why he decided to go the Kickstarter route, saying about crowd-sourcing that, “I never paid it much attention until one of my students told me about Veronica Mars, and then Zach Braff. I saw those two things and said, ‘I’ve got to give this a shot.’”

He added, “I always tell my students [at NYU], when they’re thinking about their thesis films, ‘Have an idea of how much money you can raise and then let that be the boundaries of your story.’ If you don’t raise your goal on Kickstarter, you lose everything. So, I picked a number where I felt that we could do it, and where I felt I could make the best film I could for that amount of money. Today is day one of the 30 days we have to raise the money, and if God is willing and the creek don’t rise, we’ll be shooting in November or December.”

He’s positioning his film as an alternative to the studio’s tentpole addiction, saying on the Kickstarter, “I understand now that, with the amount of money it costs to market a film, the studios need films that are going to be tentpoles. But I will go to my grave believing that there are still audiences that want something different. Not to eradicate these type of 3D, blow-up-the-world, ‘Transformers’-type movies. They’re cool, but now it seems like that’s the only thing they’re making.”

Head over to Kickstarter if you want to help Lee make his movie and take a look at the pitch video below.

Mike Myers Making Directorial Debut With Documentary Supermensch

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mike-myersMike Myers was one of the biggest stars in the world in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but after the major failure of The Love Guru in 2008, he essentially disappeared (other than a few bit parts). Now he’s coming back, with Deadline reporting that he’s set to direct a documentary called Supermensch.

The film will be about talent manager Shep Gordon, who has worked with the likes of Blondie, Alice Cooper, Luther Vandross and others.

Myers commented, “I met Shep Gordon in 1991 on the set of Wayne’s World. I thought he was a perfect combination of Brian Epstein, Marshall McLuhan and Mr Magoo. I’ve been trying to get Shep to agree to let me make a movie about him for 10 years. Last year he finally he said yes. I loved him like a brother before we started making this film and now having sifted through his life and his legacy, I love him even more.”

The Wayne’s World connection is apparently that Gordon wasn’t sure whether Alice Cooper should appear in the film (they weren’t worthy). Myers eventually convinced him, which led to a friendship.

It’ll be interested to see how Myers does behind the camera. He’s always seems terribly sensitive to criticism of what he’s done on-screen – which is why it’s believed he’s stepped back from acting – but perhaps he’ll be able to be more circumspect as a director.

Thor Writers Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz May Take On Star Trek 3

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-into-darkness-imax-posterAfter the success of Star Trek Into Darkness, Paramount is keen to get another movie going as soon as possible. However things are slightly up in the air, as while Zachary Quinto recently suggested it’ll shoot next year with JJ Abrams directing, the helmer is also busy working on Star Trek: Episode VII, which may mean he has to step aside from Star Trek.

At the moment there isn’t even a script, but now Badass Digest reports that screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz are being eyed to write the next movie in the rebooted sci-fi franchise. They’ve previously worked on the likes of Thor and X-Men: First Class, so they should know what they’re doing.

They would replace Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtman, who penned the first two instalments. It may also suggest that if those writers are going, Abrams is probably out too, although his Bad Robot production company will still produce the movie. Indeed Miller and Stentz have history with Bad Robot, producing and writer for Fringe.

Quinto may well be right that Paramount want to shoot next year, so expect to hear more very soon, including whether Abrams will direct or not.

Next Man of Steel Likely Called Batman Vs. Superman, According The The Writer

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-of-steel-superman-poster-slide
Over the weekend came the exciting news that in summer 2015 Batman and Superman will team up on the big screen for the first time (at least in live-action terms, as they’ll both appear in the upcoming animated The Lego Movie).

However there was no news on what the movie will be called, but writer David S. Goyer has now stepped to give us the likely titles. He said, “So over in Hall H at the Warner Bros. – I guess most people know now – at the end of the Warner Bros. panel, Zack (Snyder) came out and he brought Harry Lennix, who plays General Swanwick in Man of Steel and Harry read a bit from [The Dark Knight Returns]. So the next film we’re making, we’re already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015 and we’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that’s happening.”

ComicBookMovie.com confirmed that Warner Bros. has registered both BatmanVsSupermanMovie.com, and not SupermanVsBatmanMovie.com.

Henry Cavill will return as Superman, although there’s no news on who will be Batman. Zack Synder will direct with Goyer writing.

First X-Men: Days Of Future Past Posters Mix Xaviers & Magnetos Old & Young

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-days-of-future-past-poster1
After its presentation at Comic-Con at the weekend, X-Men: Days Of Future Past has given us another treat with the first two posters for the movie, which mix up Magneto and Professor Xaviers old and young, showing up Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Ian McKellen and James McAvoy.

It’s certainly well done and makes you believe the younger actors really could grow up to be their elders selves in the movie.

In the film, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine travels back a bleak, dystopian future where mutants have been rounded up and are monitored by the robotic sentinels. An older Xavier and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen), send him to the 1970s to convince their younger selves (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) that they must do something to prevent this future from ever happening.

It’s out summer 2014. (Posters via EW)

July 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

test-posterOutfest, the world’s premier LGBT film festival, has drawn its 2013 edition to a close, handing out its awards to a slew of well-received titles. Also doing well was Bridegroom, which took home the Audience award for documentary feature. Bridegroom the the documentary that came about after Shane Bitney Crone released a 10-minute Youtube video detailing how he was shut after his boyfriend’s death by his homophobic family. It became a cause celebre and was watched by millions. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason has since turned the sad tale into a feature-length documentary.
