Dane DeHaan Confirmed As Harry Osborn In Amazing Spider-Man 2

December 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, Chronicle star Dane DeHaan was at the top of a list of young actors testing for the role of Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-man 2. Director Marc Webb has confirmed that DeHaan has landed the role on Twitter, saying ‘Meet Harry Osborn. @danedehaan. pic.twitter.com/oi4Ql6nQ‘

DeHaan beat out a lot of talented people for the role, including Brady Corbet, Alden Ehrenreich, Sam Claflin, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, and Boyd Holbrook. However Dane’s got the role, playing the son of Oscorp owner Norman Osborn. In the comics he’s Peter Parker’s best friend (although we don’t know exactly how he’ll be fitting into Amazing Spider-man 2). Of course the role was played by James Franco in Sam Raimi’s trilogy.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are reprising their roles as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. Marc Webb is directing from a screenplay by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Jeff Pinkner, with the shoot planned for early next year.

Things Get Super Awesome! With Marriage Equality Movie Crowdfunding Campaign

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The campaign for marriage equality has had a lot of things, but one thing it hasn’t had up until now is a full-on movie musical! However two straight Aussie guys are determined to set that right, as they’ve written Super Awesome!, and hope to shoot it early next year in Australia and the UK.

While they have the cash for the Aussie part, they need a bit of help for the West End of London set finale, so they’ve set up an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign to help raise $50,000 to fund it. This will allow them to bring a skeleton crew to Britain and get their big ending in the can.

Super Awesome! is ‘A comedy feature film about a couple of down and out buds, Mark and Gary, given one last shot at achieving their dreams. Out of the blue Mark and Gary find themselves with 250K to headline the opening night of a massive international festival. It’s Rocky meets SuperBad set against the hilarious backdrop of two straight guys doing their best to write a musical about an issue they know nothing about – Gay Marriage. As the clock ticks down to opening night and the whole production inches towards collapsing, Mark and Gary ultimately are illuminated to the significance of gay marriage and the potential their musical has to make a change…but is it too little too late?’

Writers/directors Guy Edmonds and Matt Zeremes met a decade when they appeared in  London and Australian productions of Holding the Man, based on Timothy Conigrave’s memoir about the love between two HIV positive men. Through that they met many gay people who told them their stories, and with the current fight for marriage equality they felt moved to come up with something that might be able to change hearts and minds. As they say in the film’s IndieGogo campaign, ‘Marriage inequality sucks! This film speaks about it’s suckiness but does it through humour!’

Take a look at the campaign video above, and head over to IndieGoGo to find out more.

Help Fund Will Swenson’s LGBT-Themed Flick Facing East

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s your chance once more to help get an interesting sounding gay-themed movie into cinemas by giving a bit of cash to a Kickstarter campaign to help fund Facing East, a movie adaptation of Carol Lynn’s acclaimed stage play, which Tony nominated Broadway actor and director Will Swenson is hoping to bring to the screen.

Guinevere Turner (Go Fish, American Psycho, The Notorious Bettie Page) has written the screenplay, which follows ‘Alex and Ruth McCormick, an upstanding Mormon couple who have done everything right. He is a well-known radio personality, “One-Minute Dad,” giving great ideas on how to be a good father. She is a mother who has sacrificed everything for her family and is determined to lead each of her three children into God’s “celestial kingdom”, where they will be together as a family for all eternity. Theirs is an ideal life. Except for one flaw, which has brought them now to a point of crisis.

‘Their gay son Andrew, who had not been “healed” from his homosexuality despite every effort, and who had for a year been living with a man that he loved… has taken his own life in a flower bed beside the Salt Lake Mormon temple.’

While Ruth is relieved that her tortured boy is in God’s healing hands and feels the less said about unpleasant things, the better, Alex is desperate to understand what went wrong. This brings them into contact with Marcus, Andrew’s partner, which forces Ruth and Alex come to know their son in a way they never had before.

Will Swenson grew up in the Mormon faith himself and is well aware of the pressures this can cause, and so he’s well positioned to bring this story to the screen. He and his wife, five time Tony winner Audra MacDonald, were recently honoured by PFLAG for their efforts to promote marriage equality with the 2012 Straight for Equality in Entertainment Award.

There’s a great team already put together for the movie, with plans already in place to shoot the film towards the end of 2013. While most of the production budget is already in place, that cash won’t be available until near the time of production, and so they’re looking for $65,000 to get them to that point. And that’s where you can help. You can find out more over at Kickstarter. And as always with this sort of crowd-sourcing campaign, various different rewards are available depending on how much you give.

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III Trailer

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, Roman Coppola’s first film in over 10 years (although he’s written a few others but not directed) is an intriguing one, and now we get our first taste with a trailer for the movie. The film follows a graphic designer’s enviable life sliding into despair when his girlfriend breaks up with him. Charlie Sheen plays the titular Swan, with the likes of Bill Murray, Patricia Arquette, Dermot Mulroney and Mary Elizabeth Winstead co-starring.

It’s had a mixed reception at festival screenings, with some loving its quirky spirit, while others found the whole thing a little self-indulgent. The trailer certainly suggests that this will be a rather unusual  one, with a free-wheeling spirit that’s as likely to delight as many as it infuriates – and Coppola certainly seems to be trying to channel Wes Anderson, who’s he worked with on several movies (for example they co-wrote the script for Moonrise Kingdom).

No UK release is currently set, but it reaches the US on February.

Five Clips From Les Miserables Debut – Can you hear the movie stars sing?

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not too long now until Les Miserables hits cinemas – it’s released Christmas Day in the US and January 11th – and it’s already got loads of Oscar buzz, with the likes of Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman emerging as early favourites for the acting Oscars, with many suggesting Tom Hooper could be getting his second Best Director Academy Awards.

To help increase the hype, five new clips have been released of the famed songs from the musical, including On My Own, At The End Of The Day and A Heart Full of Love. So get you fill of the likes of Hathaway, Jackman and Russell Crowe warbling away in what looks like it should be an excellent movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

‘Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

‘In January 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs—including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”—Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.’

New Warm Bodies Trailer Hits – Spend a minute with the zombie love story

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Warm Bodies is one of those movies that could be a huge amount of fun or a well-meaning zombie rom-com misfire. While we’ll have to wait until February 8th to find out, a new taster of the movie has arrived with a 60 second trailer arriving.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘WARM BODIES is an upcoming 2013 romantic zombie film based on Isaac Marion’s popular novel of the same name. Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50), the film stars Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy/Beast in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class) and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four).’

‘R (Hoult) is a zombie. After a zombie apocalypse, he shambles across an America filled with collapsed buildings, rusted cars, shattered windows, and abandoned high-rises. He can only grunt or moan and craves human brains to get high on their memories. After eating the brains of a suicidal teen, R is overcome with love for the teen’s companion, Julie Grigio (Palmer). R rescues Julie from his zombie pack and takes her back to his lair. She eventually leaves, and R follows her back to Citi Stadium, the largest remaining human refuge.’

Twilight Breaking Dawn 2 Tops US Box Office Again, With Killing Them Softly Bombing

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The post Thanksgiving box office is traditionally dominated by holdovers and that’s certainly true this year, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 topping the US chart again, taking another $17 million to hit $255 million in America so far. It also hit a franchise record internationally over the weekend, taking $447 million outside the US, ahead of Breaking Dawn Part 1’s total of $430.9 million.

New releases didn’t do very well at all, with Brad Pitt’s latest, Killing The Softly, only placing seventh on the chart with $7 million, way below what the distributors had hoped. Even worse, it’s getting terrible notices from audiences, suggesting it will quickly disappear with trace.

The only other new entry is the horror flick The Collection, which took $3.4 million to place 10th on the chart.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 30th-December 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $17.4 $255
2 Skyfall $17 $246
3 Rise Of The Guardians $13.5 $48.9
4 Lincoln $13.5 $83.7
5 Life Of Pi $12 $48.4
6 Wreck-It Ralph $7 $158

First Pics Of Jeff Bridges & Julianne Moore In Seventh Son Debut

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not due out until October 2013, but the first images from The Seventh Son have already arrived via USA Today, featuring Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. The film is based on Joseph Delany’s novel The Spook’s Apprentice, but gets a bit name change for the film version.

Barnes plays Tom, the seventh son of a seventh son, who becomes the apprentice to master wizard ‘Spook’ Gregory (Jeff Bridges). Their characters must team up to do battle with an evil witch (Julianne Moore) who escapes and rounds up a group of evil-doers to plan an all-out assault.

Alicia Vikander plays a young witch who Tom falls for, while Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) is also onboard as one of Gregory’s apprentices. In the book, Tom is a teen, which seems to be changing, as at 31-year-old, Barnes can’t pass for that young anymore. Sergey Bodrov directs.

It’s a film that’s been in the works for a long time, so hopefully the final results will be worth it.

Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser Poster Online

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve been promised the first Star Trek Into Darkness trailer will premiere alongside The Hobbit, but before then the teaser poster has arrived (Click on it for a larger version). The synopsis that showed up last week promised the villain would be a ‘one man weapon of mass destruction’, and this poster certainly backs that up, showing Benedict Cumberbatch standing in some fiery wreckage, presumably after causing some sort of massive explosion.

However we don’t know what the explosion might be, as this is JJ Abrams, and so there’s still major secrecy going on. It’s not a particularly Star Trek-y image either, suggesting they may be trying to lure in new fans with this one.

Here’s the synopsis again, in case you missed it last week: ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

‘With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’

Ian McKellen Says He’d Like To Get Married In Middle Earth (or New Zealand at least)

December 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ian McKellen has long been at the front of the fight for gay rights (he even co-founded Stonewall) and he’s certainly not been leaving the battle for marriage equality to others. His latest action is to make a video to support a New Zealand equal marriage campaign.

Of course McKellen is no stranger to the country, having spent a lot of time there playing Gandalf in Lord Of The Rings and now The Hobbit. As he says in the video, “I hope that by the time I get back to Middle Earth I might even be able to get married.”

The antipodean nation is currently debating The New Zealand Marriage Amendment Bill, which would legalise equal marriage. It passed its first reading back in August, with a majority of 80 votes to 40 in parliament in support of the change. However it has yet to become law.

McKellen filmed his video for New Zealand Green Party on the set of ITV’s Loose Women, saying “New Zealand gave women the vote before every other country in the world, the rest of the world has looked towards New Zealand for social advance and here we are again- this time at the exciting prospect of two people of the same gender being able to get married and to join the rest of the population.

“It will be a popular move, I know, and I’m glad your major political parties have embraced it, supported too by the younger generation who see things a lot more clearly than people of my age.”
