Joe Carnahan Feels Undying Love, Adapting Vampire Graphic Novel

Back in 2011, Warner Bros. picked up rights to Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman’s graphic novel, Undying Love. Now Deadline reports that The Grey and A-Team director Joe Carnahan has signed up to helm the film version.

The graphic novel is about ‘an ex-soldier who falls for a vampire, though in order to be with her, he must take on her creator. And that creator happens to be protected by an army of mobsters (and undead beasts) in the Hong Kong underworld.’ Coker and Freedman also wrote the first draft of the movie script.

Carnahan commented, “I really took to it [the graphic novel], and the metric I use is how fast I come up with ideas and an outline, and this brought about a bunch of ideas. It is a little out of my wheelhouse, taking place in China with mysticism and swordplay, but there is a lot of potential here.”

Alexandre Aja was previously interested in directing, but nothing came of that, so now Carnahan has stepped in.

Colin Trevorrow Up For Flight Of The Navigator Remake

Few people knew the name Colin Trevorrow until a few weeks ago when it was rumoured he’d met George Lucas and was top of the list to direct the planned, Star Wars: Episode VII. While Trevorrow has now said he definitely won’t be taking that job on, it appears Disney has given the Safety Not Guaranteed helmer a consolation prize, with a remake of Flight Of The Navigator.

Variety reports that Trevorrow and co-writer Derek Connolly will rewrite the script, based on the 1986 movie (which actually only became a Disney movie after the company that made is went bust before they could complete the film). The film is about a young boy who falls down a ravine in the woods, but when he crawls out he discovers that while he’s the same, eight years have passed and that his family is now older and living in a different house. While they’re shocked but surprised to have him back, NASA also becomes interested in him, as they think he may have some connection to an alien craft they’ve discovered.

The film is a childhood favorite of Trevorrow’s, so hopefully he’ll be a good choice to direct (although if the remake can make Flight Of The Navigator’s robot Max slightly less annoying, that would be good).

While Trevorrow is out of Star Wars, he doesn’t seem too upset, as talking to THR he says, “It’s not going to be me for Episode VII, and I can’t believe I’ve actually had to come out and say that. That was the most shocking thing, like around the dinner table when I was 8, I had to assure everyone that it wasn’t me, but now actually for real. But there are a lot of things that have come up that are a lot of exciting opportunities that have come up because of this.”

Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Lands Brett Dalton As Agent Grant Ward

Plans for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series continue to build with the news, via THR, that Brett Dalton has signed on for the pilot, which Joss Whedon has written alongside Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

The actor will portray Agent Grant Ward, who’s described as ‘a skilled rising star within the organization who is described as deadly, precise and cool under fire but lacking people skills.’. He joins Ming-Na as Melinda May, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons, and Ian de Caestecker’s Agent Leo Fitz. Initial casting breakdowns also featured an agent known as Skye, but so far nobody has been cast in that role.

Dalton isn’t a particularly well known actor, although he has guest spots on the likes of Army Wives and Blue Bloods, and is due to appear in National Geographic’s telepic Killing Lincoln next year.

Joss Whedon is also expected to direct the pilot episode, with production slated to begin in January. Quite when we’ll get to see it isn’t known yet.

Ian McKellen & Patrick Stewart Back For X-Men: Days Of Future Past

For a while now people have been wondering if X-Men: Days Of Future Past would feature both the First Class mutants and some from the original X-Men trilogy, due to the fast the comic book story arc it’s based on features time travel.

Now we know that it will indeed, as Bryan Singer, who recently picked up the directing reins when Matthew Vaughn stepped down, has revealed on his Twitter account that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are returning as the older version Professor X and Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past. He also confirmed that James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult are returning.

Here’s what he had to say: ‘I’d like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, & Nicholas Hoult to #XMEN for #DaysOfFuturePast’

Adding, ‘Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @sirpatstew are joining the cast of #XMEN#DaysOfFuturePast#magneto#professorX More to come…’

As for how the older Professor X and Magneto exist alongside the younger versions played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, he simply says, ‘The movie is called X-Men: Days of Future Past, use your imagination. More to come.’

It’s believed the plot involved the First Class X-Men getting involved in time travel in order to stop a terrifying future from happening.

The Baytown Outlaws Trailer – Eva Longoria and Billy Bob Thornton go redneck

Featuring Eva Longoria and Billy Bob Thornton, The Baytown Outlaws follows follows the Oodies, a trio of redneck hillbilly brothers whose main source of fun – and only source of employment – is illegally enforcing several unwritten laws on behalf of the local corrupt sheriff. When their latest job goes disastrously wrong and ends in a massacre at the wrong address, the brothers are approached by Celeste (Longoria), a witness to the mayhem, with a proposal. She’s willing to pay them $25,000 for the safe return of her godson, who has been kidnapped by her ex-husband (Thornton).

What she fails to tell them is that the man in question is a ruthless mobster who believes Celeste is dead, having previously arranged for one of his goons to pump her full of lead.

Unsurprisingly, what should be a simple rescue mission soon turns into a southern fried battle royale of epic proportions as the brothers fall foul of a seemingly endless parade of psychopaths and miscreants who want them dead, ranging from a gang of crazy-ass biker chicks and a pack of ruthless road warriors to Federal agents, crooked cops and some very angry Native Americans. The movie hits DVD & Blu-Ray in the UK on 26th December 2012.

Brad Pitt Speaks Out Against Equating Gay Marriage With Legalising Marijuana

Getting married and being allowed to get stoned on pot aren’t things you would normally feel the need to conflate, but gay marriage opponents have been doing just that, using it as part of their slippery slope, harm to society arguments, to suggest the two seemingly disparate things are actually very similar.

It’s also something that’s been used in the media, with articles about one of these issues, drawing comparisons to the other.

Now Brad Pitt is here to tell them to stop, as while he’s for both marriage equality and finding a new way to deal with drugs, he doesn’t think the two things have much to do with one another. Talking to MTV, he says, “Equality, absolutely, that’s what defines us. It’s what makes us great. If it doesn’t sit well with your religion, let your God sort it out in the end, but that’s us. We’re equal. But what’s curious to me is how the two are always linked together. I don’t understand that. I do believe that we should be responsible for our own choices in talking about the drug laws, and that the drug war is an ultimate failure and that the billions and billions of dollars that we’ve committed to it, there’s got to be a better way. I don’t believe in incarceration over education — anyways, don’t get me started. But there’s real damage to drugs; that is not the same as with gay marriage. Since the last round [of elections], they’ve been linked in every article. I find that curious.”

So there, Brad Pitt says they’re different, so anyone who keeps trying to merge the two had better stop now!

Dolly Parton Says She’s Not Gay, But She Sure Love Them

If I were to turn straight, I think I’d have to try and woo Dolly Parton (and that, dear friends, is good evidence of why I’ll never turn straight). Her support of gay rights is well known, but has led to speculation from some more closed-minded corners – who can’t believe a straight person would love gay people so much – that she’s a lesbian and in a relationship with her childhood friend.

The singer and sometime actress was asked about her lovelife by ABC’s NIghtline, to which she responded, “I’ve been accused of being involved with every man I’m ever seen with or worked with. Maybe I have, maybe I ain’t. I never tell if I have. But you know people always saying that.”

She then compared lesbian rumours surrounding her to those that have swirled around Oprah and her friend Gail, “Like Gail, her friend, Judy, my friend, they just think that you just can’t be that close to somebody. Judy and I have been best friends since we were like in the third and fourth grade… We still just have a great friendship and relationship and I love her as much as I love anybody in the whole world, but we’re not romantically involved.”

Indeed Parton is a bit of a poster child for straight relationships, as she’s been married to her husband Carl Dean, for 46 years. Speculation about Parton being a lesbian may be a result of the fact that Dolly and her hubby are rarely seen together. Dean is generally publicity shy and Parton has said he’s only ever seen her perform once, but just because he doesn’t go to events with her doesn’t mean they’re not happily married.

She has long supported gay rights and even holds ‘gay days’ at her Dollywood theme park, continuing with them even after she was threatened about them by the Ku Klux Klan. Parton has even previously entered a drag queen contest anonymously as herself… and lost.

Denis O’Hare And Bradford Cox Head For Dallas Buyer’s Club

The Dallas Buyer’s Club is already shooting (we had the first set shots of Jared Leto playing his cross-dressing role a few days again), but that doesn’t mean the complete cast has been announced. The likes of Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Steve Zahn, Dallas Roberts and Jennifer Garner are already on the New Orleans set and now THR reports that they’ll be joined by Griffin Dunne, Denis O’Hare and Bradford Cox.

The based on a true story movie is about Ron Woodruff (McConaughey), a man who contracts AIDS in 1986. When he’s given just six months to live, he becomes frustrated with the lack of medical options in the US, due to the fact drugs have to be extensively tested by the FDA before they become available to patients, he begins smuggling alternative drugs into the country from Mexico. Jared Leto will portray Rayon, a gay, cross-dressing AIDS patient Woodruff befriends at the hospital.

Dunne and out actor Denis O’Hare are both set to play doctors who get involved with Woodruff, while Cox (who’s best known as a musician, who sings with Deerhunter and worked on the score for Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are) will play Leto’s lover. Jean Marc Vallee directs.

New Les Miserables French Poster Debuts

I’m always a little wary of responses to films based on the very first screenings, as it often seems audiences are more prone to praise the film, based on the giddy feeling of being one of the very first to see it. However in the case of Les Miserables, the reaction to the first looks at the movie that took place over the weekend have been difficult to ignore.

Some loved it so much they’ve already pretty much decided Tom Hooper will get his second Best Director Oscar, with many of the actors likely to be top runners in the Academy Awards race too. Although we may well get some more measured responses over the next few weeks, it definitely seems the film will be a hit and it’s now certainly one of the frontrunners in the Oscar race.

With the US release coming at Christmas and a UK date set for January 11th, we’ve now got a new French poster for the movie, which gives everything a bit of a classic look, with the traditional photoshopped multi-head image that final posters love.

Kellan Lutz Set To Be A Tattooed Assassin In Tatua

Now that Twilight is over, the actors have to look to what they’re going to do next. While the main players (and Anna Kendrick) have flourishing careers, the others are yet to use the fantasy franchise to propel them to the top of the film star tree. One who seems to have a better chance than most is Kellan Lutz, who’s already segued into Immortals and is playing the title role in an upcoming motion-capture Tarzan movie.

Now Deadline reports that he’s signed a deal to star in a movie called Tatua, playing a rather unusual tattooed assassin. Based on an original idea by comic book creators Paul Jenkins and Rob Prior, Tatua is about a man with a rare blood type that allows him to be tattooed with a powerful ink. He is able to pull those weapons straight off his skin, giving him an enviable leg up as a covert assassin.

Apparently the weapons must be used quickly or they’ll start to dissolve, while the whole thing takes a toll on the body of the assassin.

Aaron Sims, who wowed Hollywood with his effects filled short Archetype, will make his directing debut with the film. Hopefully his FX experience will ensure he can make the $15 million budget go a long way.
