Jason Clarke On For Youn Lincoln Biopic Green Blade Rises

September 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At this rate there won’t be a moment of Abe Lincoln’s life – real or fictional – that hasn’t been committed to film. We’ve already had him fighting vampires and this autumn we get Spielberg’s look at his later life. Now Jason Clarke has signed up to star in The Green Blade Rises, about the President’s younger years.

None other that Terrence Malick is producing the movie, while his regular collaborator AJ Edwards is writing and directing the movie. Deadline says the film ‘tells of the formative years of the 16th US president and the hardships that shape him including abandonment by his father (Jason Clarke) in the harsh winter wilderness, a tragedy that marked him forever, and the two women who guided him to immortality. Clarke’s character has a callous, quiet demeanor, verbally and physically abusive towards Abe on many occasions, but lets his son know how proud he is of him. He is married to Sarah Lincoln (played by Diane Kruger), Abe’s beautiful stepmother.’

It doesn’t sound like this will all be about Lincoln cutting down cherry trees and never telling lies then.

Aussie actor Clarke’s profile is likely to rise soon with roles in Lawless, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby and White House Down.

Emmanuelle Chriqui Joins Luke Wilson In Millon Dollar Man

September 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At Sundance in January, the movie Million Dollar Man was announced, with Luke Wilson attached to the title role. It’s been slightly stuck in development since then, but now it’s moving forward as Variety reports Emmanuelle Chriqui has taken the female lead in the indie sports comedy.

The flick is about a man (Wilson) who’s down on his luck and working as a driver for a soft drinks company. He then gets a second chance in life playing a football kicker, which is presumably when he becomes the million dollar man of the title. Chriqui will play the obligatory love interest who helps to get him in shape.

Scott Marshall, who’s the son of Valentine’s Day director Garry Marshall, is set to direct the film from a script by Alex Schrader.

Michael Fassbender Is Set To Be Frank Alongside Domnhall Gleeson

September 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Fassbender is a ridiculously busy man who seems to be on a mission to appear in as many films as humanly possible. He’s just signed up for another one called Frank, which Variety reports he’ll star in alongside Domnhall Gleeson.

If Fassbender has ever dreamed of being a rock star, this will allow him to fulfill that ambition, as he’ll play the leader of an eccentric pop band, who’s joined by Gleeson’s young wannabe musician. Perhaps unsurprisingly the younger man finds himself in over his head.

Jon Ronson, who wrote the book The Men Who Stare At Goats, has come up with the script along with Peter Straughan, while Lenny Abrahamson is set to direct. It’ll start shooting sometime next year.

A Liar’s Autobiography Trailer – An anarchic animated take on Python Graham Chapman’s life

September 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Monty Python’s Graham Chapman was a bit of a unique character, so it is perhaps fitting that he’s made a new movie, 23 years after he died. It’s the sort of silliness he’d have loved. The animated film is based on his recently uncovered reading of his memoir, A Liar’s Autobiography. The movie, directed by Terry Jones’ son, also features the voices of the other Pythons (except Eric Idle), with 14 different animation companies working on various parts of the film to tell the story of the great gay comedy performer. It looks suitably anarchic and could well be a fascinating ride, as Chapman was certainly an interesting guy.

The Possession Tops Labor Day US Box Office

September 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally holiday weekends are when studios roll out some of their biggest movies, but Labor Day is pretty much the stepchild of these occasions, as the fact some States don’t recognise it and that it comes just before kids go back to school, mean it isn’t seen as a good time to bring out big movies.

It means that The Possession, which took $21.3 million over the four-day weekend, is the second-biggest Labor Day total ever. It’s an okay but not stunning start for the Sam Raimi produced horror movie, but as mentioned, it’s good for a Labor Day weekend.

The only other new opener in the top 10 was Lawless, which took second spot with $13.0 million over the weekend, and $15 million since it opened in the middle of last week. It’s not a particularly brilliant start considering the cast (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy etc.) and good reviews, but period movies often have difficulty getting a foothold. However if word of mouth is good, it’ll hopefully hold up over the coming weeks.

Perhaps the biggest box office news came at the other end of the chart, where the children’s movie Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure (a Tweenies/Teletubbies style endeavour with people in big foam suits), earned an abysmal $445,000. That’s the worst opening ever for a movie opening on over 2,000 screens, and the second worst per screen average ever for a nationwide release. It’s been estimated that on average, there were less than two people per screening.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 31st-September 3rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Possession $21.3 $21.3
2 Lawless $13.0 $15.1
3 The Expendables 2 $11.2 $68.5
4 The Bourne Legacy $9,3 $98.3
5 Paranorman $8.8 $40.3
6 The Odd Life Of Timothy Green $8.5 $38.8
7 The Dark Knight Rises $7.9 $433.2
8 2016 Obama’s American $7.0 $20.1
9 The Campaign $7.0 $74.5
10 Hope Springs $6.0 $53.3

Bob Odenkirk On For Alexander Payne’s Nebraska

September 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having started out as a writer on Saturday Night Live, Bob Odenkirk is best known for out and out comedy, usually of the rather silly type, but more recently he’s been flexing his muscles in Breaking Bad.

Now he’s teaming up with director Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) for Nebraska, with Omaha.com reporting that Stacey Keach is also aboard. June Squibb, who played Jack Nicholson’s wife in About Schmidt is in talks to play Dern’s other half in this.

The long-gestating project, which Payne has been working on for years, will follow Bruce Dern as a struggling alcoholic who believes he has won a sweepstakes lottery, so he hops in the car with his underachiever of a son (Will Forte) to claim his prize.

Odenkirk will play Forte’s older brother, while Stacey Keach is set to be an old colleague of Dern’s grumpy central figure. The movie set to start shooting on October 15.

Michael Clarke Duncan Dies Aged 54

September 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The larger than life (literally) Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away at the age of 54. The actor was receiving treatment in a Los Angeles hospital, having never rebounded from a heart attack he suffered in July.

The news was confirmed by a statement released by the actor’s fiancee, Omarosa Manigault. “Michael Clarke Duncan passed away this morning in Los Angeles, said his fiancée, Reverend Omarosa Manigault. The Oscar-nominated actor suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered. Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date.”

After guest starring in a number of TV shows throughout the 1990s, normally playing bouncers or bodyguards, the 6-foot-5 300-pound actor appeared in the 1998 blockbuster Armageddon, but really broke through (and received an Academy Award nomination) for his portrayal of John Coffey in The Green Mile. He also starred in The Scorpion King, Daredevil, Sin City, and The Island.

He was as well-known for his ultra-deep voice as he was for his hulking physical appearance. He provided the voice of Commander Vachir in Kung Fu Panda, and voiced Kilowog in last year’s Green Lantern. He last starred in the short-lived TV series The Finder, which is currently airing in the UK on the Universal Channel.

Richard Gere Says He Took American Gigolo Role Due To Gay Subtext

September 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Back in the early 1980s, it was generally seen as career suicide to ‘play gay’, but that didn’t mean stars weren’t interested in roles with a bit of homoerotic subtext. That seems to be true of Richard Gere, who’s told EW that one of the reasons he chose to star in American Gigolo was because of its gay themes.

In an interview that takes in his thought on many of his most popular films, he says, “Paul [Schrader, the film’s writer and director] came to see me in Malibu and said, ‘You’ve got to say yes to this by tomorrow at the latest.’ I read it and I thought, ‘This is a character I don’t know very well. I don’t own a suit. He speaks languages; I don’t speak any languages. There’s kind of a gay thing that’s flirting through it and I didn’t know the gay community at all.’ I wanted to immerse myself in all of that and I had literally two weeks. So I just dove in. If I recall, [the nudity] wasn’t in the script. It was just in the natural process of making the movie. I certainly felt vulnerable, but I think it’s different for men than women.”

The reason Gere only had two weeks is that John Travolta dropped out shortly before shooting was set to begin (perhaps even back then he was trying to avoid the gay rumours that have followed him around for decades). Indeed Gere has a lot to thank Travolta for, as it was the Grease star dropping out of American Gigolo, Days Of Heaven and An Officer And A Gentleman that essentially handed Richard his career.

American Gigolo is about a man who makes his money as an escort to wealthy older women, but whose life gets complicated when one of his clients is murdered. The same year as Gigolo was released, Gere took to the Broadway stage in the play Bent, about gay people in a Nazi concentration camp, which at the time was seen as a brave move for a young actor of the verge of stardom.
