The Barrens Trailer – Stephen Moyer takes on a legend of American folklore

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Darren Lynn Bousman made his name directing Saw sequels and has since made the likes of Repo!: The Genetic Opera, Mother’s Day and 11-11-11. His latest offering is The Barrens, which takes on a slice of dark American folklore. Here’s the synopsis: ‘It’s known as the Jersey Devil, the winged beast spawned 400 years ago by Satan himself. Some say this creature still inhabits the dense pine forests of southern New Jersey, where Richard Vineyard (Moyer) takes his family for a rustic weekend camping trip. As the Vineyard family ventures further into the woods in search of the perfect campsite, Richard teeters on the edge of sanity. Welcome to a new kind of horror that lives – and kills – in a place called The Barrens. Mia Kirshner, Erick Knudsen and Allie MacDonald also star.’

Lawless Red Band Trailer – More violence from the star-studded prohibition-era drama

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a lot of good buzz surrounding Lawless (we’ve seen it and out review will be up shortly before its September 7th UK release). Now a new red band trailer for the film has arrived, which ups level of violence and skin for the prohibition-era drama. Directed by John Hillcoat from a script by him and Proposition cohort Nick Cave, Lawless is based on Matt Bodurant’s book about the author’s grandfather and two great-uncles, who were part of a fierce criminal gang at the centre of the US’s moonshine trade during prohibition. The story also follows a writer named Sherwood Anderson, who is on the trail of the bootlegging gang. The film has a great cast, with Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska onboard.

Mark Webber Up For Twisted Game Show Thriller Angry Little God

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mark Webber is an actor who it always feels should be getting better roles than he normally does (he’s also got a fascinating backstory, having lived rough with his mother when he was a kid).

While he’s popped up in Scott Pilgrim and various other movies, he’s never really broken out, but now he’s scored the lead role in Angry Little God, a remake of the Thai thriller 13: Game Of Death, which Last Exorcist helmer Daniel Stamm will direct.

Webber will play a man who’s in over his head financially and signs up for a game show in which he can win $6 million if he can execute 13 different tasks. As you might guess, it gets a lot more complicated than there, and apparently there’s a limit to what humans can and will do for a major cash windfall, with the show asking him to do ever more terrible things, and he realises he may not get out alive.

David Birke is writing the script, which Stamm will take on once he’s completed work on his new horror movie, The Darkness.

Josh Brolin Going Crazy For The Storm

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that Sean Penn was planning to go back behind the camera to direct a movie called Crazy For The Storm and now Variety reports that Penn has found the man he wants to star, trying to recruit his old friend Josh Brolin for the main role.

The movie will be based on Norman Ollestad’s memoir, which centres on the writer’s relationship with his father, who taught him several different skills from a very young age. The plot also focuses on how those traits saved his life, when he was stranded on a mountaintop after surviving a plane crash, so there’s a bit of a thematic link to Penn’s previous directorial effort, Into the Wild, with this one.

Will Fetters is adapting the screenplay, with the plan to shoot early next year once Brolin has completed work on Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake.

Ellen DeGeneres Back For Finding Nemo 2

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pixar has certainly changed its tune since the time it was reluctant to make sequels to any of its big hits (other than Toy Story 2). They have several follow-ups in the works, including next year’s Monsters University and the recently revealed Finding Nemo 2.

The movie was announced last month, with Andrew Stanton back on board to direct, and now THR reports that Ellen DeGeneres is in talks to return as Dory. That can only be a good thing, as what would a Finding Nemo sequel be without the forgetful fish? No story details have been leaked so it’s impossible to tell how central to the story Dory might be, although it wouldn’t be shocking if she took centre stage this time around, especially as Pixar want DeGeneres signed up so early in the process.

Victoria Strouse is currently writing the script and a late 2016 release date is expected.

Disney May Reboot The Rocketeer

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in 1991 Disney massively hyped up their mega-budget comic book movie, The Rocketeer, but unfortunately the movie landed with a thud at the box office. While director Joe Johnston has talked about a sequel ever since, it never seemed likely to happen.

However, now Vulture reports that the House Of Mouse is now mulling over rebooting the character, hoping that in these more comic friendly times – and with Iron Man and Captain America having proved popular – it may be time to bring The Rocketeer back to the big screen.

Based on Dave Stevens’ 1982 comic, The Rocketeer featured Bill Campbell as Cliff Secord, a daredevil racing pilot in the late 1930s who comes across an experimental rocket jetpack stolen from Howard Hughes. He uses the pack to become a masked hero, which brings him into conflict with the gangsters who stole it in the first place and eventually sees him battling Nazis. Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton co-starred.

At the minute any reboot is in the very early stages, with Disney soliciting ideas from writers for a new take on the character, so there’s a good chance it may never happen, especially with so much comic-book cash being funnelled from Disney to Marvel for their movies, but it might be fun if it did.

Kat Dennings Back For Thor: The Dark World

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Kat Denning appeared as Darcy Lewis in Thor, she didn’t have a huge amount to do. However now Deadline says she’ll be back for Thor: The Dark World, with a slightly expanded role this time around.

It isn’t known exactly how Denning will fit into the movie, as there hasn’t been much official word on the plot of the movie. However it’s due to shoot this autumn, with Alan Taylor directing from a script by Robert Rodat, meaning Dennings will have to work around shooting on her sitcom, 2 Broke Girls.

Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins,Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Tadanobu Asano, Stellan Skarsgard and Ray Stevenson will all return for the film, with Christopher Ecclestone recently signing up to play the villain.

Dumb and Dumber 2 To Centre On A Love Child

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this month, Jeff Daniels revealed that Dumb and Dumber 2 is still alive and kicking, debunking a report from June that indicated Jim Carrey had dropped out of the comedy sequel.

Director Bobby Farrelly has now confirmed that he and his brother Peter Farrelly still plan to direct this sequel sometime next year, and revealed a few tidbits about the story. He told Digital Spy, “I can tell you that there is no growth out of either one of them and it’s 20 years later. What is funny about the original is that they’re grown men who are complete losers and when the studio came to us about a sequel, we were like, ‘Loads of kids are losers and they’re dumb.’ We didn’t see any value in the sequel so we backed out of it, but now these guys are in regular life and they’re still basically children at heart. The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go and find the child because he’s having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his kidneys.”

The filmmaker also said they originally hoped to start shooting this autumn, although that isn’t possible now that Jeff Daniels’ HBO show The Newsroom will be in production at that time. He revealed that the new plan is to get production started next spring. “We were hoping to shoot it very soon – this fall – but that didn’t come to pass because of scheduling conflicts. Jeff has a successful TV show over here now so we have to work around that. We are planning on shooting it this coming spring and hopefully it will be out by next fall. That’s the plan and that will be our next movie, we’ve already written the script. We’re very anxious to get back in business with those two guys.”

Warner Snaps Up Pontius Pilate Script

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following a wave of interest in movies based on bible characters in Hollywood, Warner Bros. has picked up Pontius Pilate, a screenplay by Vera Blasi (Woman On Top, Tortilla Soup), which puts a fresh spin on this rather difficult Biblical figure.

The script follows the entire life of Lucius Pontius Pilate, the son of a Roman knight and a cunning warrior in his own right. He is assigned to become the prefect of Judea, where his arrogance clouds his judgement and causes the public to despise him. This leads to his decision on the fate of Jesus Christ, a man claiming to be the King of the Jews.

Other Biblical figures such as John the Baptist, Salome, and Mary Magdalene are also featured in this drama, which slightly oddly has been described as, “a Biblical era Twilight Zone episode,” although quite what’s meant by that isn’t clear.

Here’s what the screenwriter had to say about this story that mixes historical fact with creative elements:”You have the available facts from Roman and Jewish history books and the four gospels, and then you are left to speculate, to interpret the character of Pilate and give him a dilemma. He seemed a great way to offer context to this very famous event, and if you look at it from the perspective of the Roman governor of that time, it allows for an investigation of the politics of Judea at the time, and what it was like to be occupied by Rome.” (Source: Deadline)

Kick-Ass 2 Lands Lindy Booth As Night Bitch

August 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lindy Booth is in talks to join the burgeoning cast of Universal’s superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, playing Night Bitch. Up until now Booth has been best known as a bit of a scream queen, appearing in the likes of Wrong Turn, Dawn Of The Dead and Cry_Wolf, and indeed it was with the last of those that she first teamed up with Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow.

In the comic books, Night Bitch’s identity is kept a mystery. She claims that her sister’s murder drove her to become a costumed vigilante and join the superhero group Justice Forever. Her weapon of choice is a long pole that matches her costume. The actress joins a cast that includes new additions such as John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, Morris Chestnut, and Robert Emms. Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Nicolas Cage reprise their roles from the first film.

Jeff Wadlow is directing from his own screenplay, with a June 28, 2013 release date already set. Production is scheduled to begin next month in Toronto and New York. (Source: THR)
