August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Impossible will be trying to compete for awards, with its US release set for December 21st, just in time to qualify for the 2013 Oscars, with the movie reaching UK shores on January 4th. Here’s the synopsis, ‘Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her. Based on a true story, The Impossible is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, The Impossible is a journey to the core of the human hear.’

Gary Ross Locked For Peter And The Starcatchers

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago it was reported that after passing on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, director Gary Ross was mulling taking on Disney’s Peter and the Starcatchers. Now Deadline reports that he’s locked in the movie as his next directorial effort.

The film is a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan, following Peter, who meets a young girl named Molly on a Neverland ship. Molly tells Peter about a trunk of magical ‘starstuff’ that must never be retrieved by ‘Black Stache’, the name Captain Hook went by before losing his hand. Peter and Molly set off on an adventure to keep this mystical substance out of the nefarious pirate’s hands.

The project was first set up at Disney way back in 2005, when Jay Wolpert was hired to adapt the book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. After years of languishing in development, in May Jesse Wigutow was hired to write the screenplay. The tale has already become a Broadway play, which took home five Tony Awards earlier this year.

Ross was also considering directing The Secret Life Of Houdini for Summit, but no deal was ever signed and he’s now decided not to make the film, so he can concentrate on the Peter Pan film.

Anna Kendrick Leads Shortlist For Captain America 2 Female Lead

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel Studios is gearing up for the superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which goes into production after Thor: The Dark World wraps later this year. As a result, the studio is currently searching for the female lead, with Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Felicity Jones (Like Crazy), and Imogen Poots (Fright Night) considered the front runners, according to The New York Post.

It isn’t officially known which character one of these actresses might play, although the speculation is that it’ll be Sharon Carter, who’s the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in the first film, and who is the Cap’s love interest in The Winter Soldier comic book arc.

Chris Evans is slated to return as Steve Rogers/Captain America, with Anthony Mackie signing on earlier this month to star as The Falcon. Samuel L. Jackson is expected to return as Nick Fury, while Sebastian Stan be back as Bucky Barnes, who transforms into the title villain, The Winter Soldier.

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Captain America: The First Avenger scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It’s due for release on April 4th, 2014.

Warner Bros. Passes On The Dark Tower

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this month, fans of The Dark Tower were given a ray of hope when Warner Bros. expressed interest in picking up the ambitious project after Universal turned it down. The studio received a new draft of the screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, with Russell Crowe in contention to play Roland Deschain. Today, we have word that Warner Bros. decided to pass on the project.

To be honest it’s not that surprising, as director Ron Howard has incredibly ambitious and expensive plans for the adaptation, which would be a massive risk for anyone who wants to take it on, especially as the director wants any financier to sign on for the whole project, rather than just seeing how things go as they go along.

The plan is to produce a trilogy of movies, with two limited-run TV series between each movie. Director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer will still try to shop the project to other studios, although it isn’t known if Russell Crowe will still be available to star. The story centres on Roland Deschain, the last in a line of gunslingers who journeys to The Dark Tower, in a last-ditch effort to save humanity. (Source: Variety)

Jim Carrey Sought For Kick-Ass 2

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Kick-Ass 2 set to go into production in Toronto next month, Universal Pictures and director Jeff Wadlow are busy putting the last pieces of the cast together, and are currently courting Jim Carrey to play Colonel Stars, according to Deadline. It isn’t known how interested the actor is.

The character helps form the superhero ensemble known as Justice Forever, which Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) becomes a part of. Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist), Nicolas Cage (Big Daddy), and Yancy Butler (Angie D’Amico) will reprise their roles from Kick-Ass. New additions to the cast include John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, Morris Chestnut, and Robert Emms.

Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) is directing from his own screenplay, based on the comic book series created by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. Kick-Ass 2 will be released next year.

Forest Whitaker Revealed as The Butler In The First Image From Lee Daniels’ Film

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Openly gay director Lee Daniels has had problems setting up financing for a follow-up to his Oscar-nominated movie Precious, but now the cameras are rolling on The Butler, and to prove it the silhouetted image above has been released. In case you didn’t know, the figure is Forest Whitaker, who plays the title character in the film.

He plays the real-life figure Eugene Allen, who rose through the ranks at the White House from 1952 through 1986, where he served eight different Presidents and eventually became the head butler. It gave him a unique vantage point on the civil rights struggle. Expect plenty more interesting images, as the starry cast includes Robin Williams and Melissa Leo as Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower, Joh Cusack as Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson, James Marsden and Minka Kelly as JFK and Jackie O and Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan, while the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Alex Pettyfer, Lenny Kravitz, Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Redgrave, Jesse Williams, Mariah Carey, and David Oyelowo also star.

Hangover Helmer Todd Phillips Going Dramatic With The Gambler

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Todd Phillips, who is set to go into production on The Hangover Part III soon, has lined up his first dramatic project with a Paramount’s remake of The Gambler, taking over from Martin Scorsese, who was previously attached to helm..

The Departed’s William Monahan has written the screenplay, which follows a UCLA literature professor who has a serious gambling addiction and gets in trouble with gangsters. Earlier reports indicated that Leonardo DiCaprio was circling the lead role, but it isn’t known if he is still involved.

Irwin Winkler, who produced the original, is back on board as a producer. It is believed that this could be Todd Phillips’ next project after he wraps on The Hangover Part III, although that has not been confirmed. (Source: THR)

Warner Bros Drops Biopic Of Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing

August 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Towards the end of last year it was revealed Warner Bros had picked up a script about gay codebreaker and computing pioneer Alan Turing, with an eye to making a biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In March, director J. Blakeson (The Disappearance Of Alice Creed) came onboard  to helm the film, called The Imitation Game.

However, it now appears Warner has dropped the movie after DiCaprio stated he was no longer interested in playing the lead role, according to The Wrap. It seems Warner believes the film needs a a-list star attached as it doesn’t just just telling the story of Turing’s heroic attempts to crack the various Nazi codes during World War II and his work that led to the birth of the computer revolution, but also covers his homosexuality and how after the war he was prosecuted for being gay, chemically castrated and is eventually believed to have taken his own life (although some believe his death was actually a tragic accident).

This isn’t necessarily the end of the movie, as Blakeson remains attached and now other studios and production companies will have the opportunity to snap it up. Blakeson is apparently trying to repackage the film, which may involve getting another star attached, and then sell it to a new home. Turing definitely deserves a biopic, as he led a truly incredible life, much of which went unreported for decades due to the secrecy around his wartime work, but is now finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Nina Simone Biopic To Focus On Affair With Gay Man (although he’ll apparently be straightened out for the film))

August 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was announced last week that Zoe Saldana had scored the lead in a biopic of legendary music incon Nina Simone (taking over from the long attached May J Blige), opposite David Oyelowo as her nurse turned manager, Clifton Henderson. The screenplay is said to focus on an affair between the two of them, looking at the last years of Simone’s life before she died of cancer in 2003.

However Nina’s daughter, Lisa Celeste Stroud (who uses the stage name Simone), has hit out at some inaccuracies in the script and also wants to point out it’s completely authorised. One of the main things she wants to say is that while the film apparently paints the relationship between Henderson and Simone as a great romance, in reality he was gay.

In a Facebook post Lisa says, ‘When the announcement initially hit the press with MJ Blige cast as Nina (about 6 yrs ago) I heard it along with everyone else. The story was written as a love story between my mother and her former nurse, Clifton Henderson and primarily takes place during the last 8 years of her life. Please note, this project is unauthorized. The Nina Simone Estate was never asked permission nor invited to participate. …

Clifton Henderson was gay. He was not attracted to women. So, the truth is…Nina Simone and Clifton Henderson NEVER had a relationship other than a business one. Please correct me, but isn’t a biopic the story of one’s life? …

For all she endured while here and all of the lives she has touched, she DESERVES to be remembered for who she truly was; not some made up love story from a former nurse/manager (now deceased) who sold his life rights because of his relationship to Nina Simone.’

It’s not clear whether Lisa has read the latest versions of the script, although this does sound like just the sort of thing Hollywood would do, feeling the life of an incredible American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist isn’t good enough unless they can tack a love story on – and as the life rights they own are Henderson’s, that’s who’ll have to be in love with her. Hopefully this will turn out to be false and if Henderson was indeed gay, that’ll be reflected in the movie, but we’ll have to wait and see.

(Thanks to The Advocate for the heads up)
