After spending the last decade faffing about with motion capture movies, director Robert Zemeckis returns to the live action arena with Flight, which should hit cinemas this November. In the action-packed mystery thriller, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault, and what really happened on that plane? It’s due out this November.

Django Unchained Trailer – Is Tarantino onto another winner?
It’ll be interesting to see if the anachronistic music is carried on into the actual film, but it certainly gives the first trailer for Django Unchained a true Tarantino feeling. Indeed despite being set in the old west, the whole thing is infused with Quentin’s style, which can only be a good thing. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.
‘Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.
‘Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (amuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival.’
Wreck-It Ralph Trailer – Disney’s latest animation goes videogame
Now this looks like it might be fun! While we’ve seen pics from Wreck-It Ralph, it’s been difficult to tell whether it was just a good concept or if it could actually be a really good movie – the trailer certainly suggests the latter. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph.” Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Step Brothers”) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”), the “good guy” star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy.He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero. On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV’s “Glee”) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, “The Sarah Silverman Program”) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Will Ralph realise his dream and save the day before it’s too late? “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes onto the big screen in February 2013, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select UK cinemas.’
Matthew Modine Joins Steve Jobs Biopic
A Steve Jobs biopic, simply titled Jobs, is already shooting, but it’s still adding to its cast, as THR reports that Matthew Modine has joined the movie, playing John Sculley, who Jobs recruited to lead Apple in 1983 and famously ‘fired’ the co-founder of the company two years later. Sculley remained as Apple CEO from 1983 to 1993.
Modine comments, “It’s my feeling – and I think there’s a lot of people who feel – that had John Sculley not fired Steve Jobs from Apple Computers and [let] Steve go on the journey that he did when he was away from Apple Computers, that we wouldn’t be speaking about Steve Jobs today.”
Ashton Kutcher is playing Jobs himself, with the film tracing the man’s story from the 1970s through to the 21st Century. Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) directs, with Josh Gad starring as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. It’s due out this autumn, rushing into cinemas to get a good head start on a rival, slightly more official Jobs film, which is based on the acclaimed biography by Walter Isaacson and with a screenplay by The Social Network Oscar winner Aaron Sorkin.
Michael Goldenberg Writing Wonder Woman Script
While Batman and Superman have had numerous movies, it’s slightly odd that the character who is probably DC’s other biggest property has never lit up the big screen. However now it appears the company is once more looking to adapt Wonder Woman for a cinematic outing.
The news comes in a Variety report about DC’s plans for a Justice League movie (which we reported on yesterday), which drops in the info that Michael Goldenberg has been hired to write a Wonder Woman script. There’s no news on the direction the film might take or if it will specifically be linked into the plans for Justice League.
Part of the problem with Wonder Woman is that some elements of it may potentially seem a bit silly for the big screen, such as her invisible plane, Amazon origins and how her abilities work. There’s also the fact Hollywood is still shy about female action heroes. However with such a long-standing, popular character, they should be able to overcome that, and perhaps Goldenberg, who’s co-wrote Green Lantern, is the man to do it.
The Variety report also mentions that Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green are still hard at work on a Flash screenplay for Greg Berlanti to possibly direct. And of course, after Chris Nolan finishes his Batman trilogy, it’s likely DC will look to reboot that character. It certainly seems the company has realised how far it is behind the curveball compared to Marvel and is doing something about it.
George Clooney Directing The Yankee Commandante
As a director, George Clooney loves his political movies, and he’s not afraid of taking on potentially contentious topics. It appears he’s now attached to a film that may be even more hotly charged than his previous directorial efforts.
Deadline reports that he’s signed on to helm The Yankee Commandante, based on a The New Yorker article by David Grann, which was published in May. The ‘article is about William Alexander Morgan, an American who helped Castro and the Cuban rebels overthrow Fulgencio Batista. He’d reached the status of Commandante, the sole foreigner other than Argentinian Che Guevara to be so highly regarded. Shortly after, Morgan, a shadowy man whose motives for being there were subject to suspicion, was imprisoned and facing a firing squad, charged with working for US intelligence. At the same time, his exploits as a rebel soldier led J. Edgar Hoover and everyone else scrambling to sort out his motives and who he was working for.’ There’s no indication whether Clooney is thinking of starring as well.
With the anti-Communist Cuba movement very powerful in the US, it’s a topic most filmmakers would steer clear of, although Clooney is a savvy operator and could well make a movie that’s even handed enough not to seem too pro-Castro (unless that’s what he wants!). It’s certainly an interesting tale that could make a good film.
Paul Rudd Makes Secret Film Prince Avalanche
It’s tough to keep a secret in Hollywood, but it seems director David Gordon Green has managed it, as the helmer of Pineapple Express and Your Highness has managed to film a movie called Prince Avalanche, which he shot last month in Texas.
If the film had a no name cast, it might be understandable the film went under the radar, but this one stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch. It’s a remake of the 2011 Icelandic road trip comedy Either Way, which is set in the 1980s and follows two highway maintenance men who work in some of the country’s remotest areas. Their friendship has developed over the years they’ve shared time on the road, with much of the movie being their discussions about anything and everything, from their sex lives to their fears.
Although the Variety report about the film isn’t clear whether the new version differs from the original in any major ways, the presumption is that Rudd and Hirsch play two similar men, who chat as the travel the wilds of Texas. There’s no news on when it might hit cinemas.
Jamie Foxx Up For White House Down
Sony only bought the screenplay for White House Down a couple of months ago, but they’ve already attached Roland Emmerich to direct and are moving fast to get the film in cinemas as quickly as possible. Now they’re starting to cast the movie, with Variety reporting that Jamie Foxx is being eyed to play the president in the film.
The story is described as Die Hard set in the White House, concentrating on a paramilitary takeover of the President’s official residence. Not too many other details about the script are known, except that Channing Tatum is set to play a Secret Service agent who leaps into action to protect the Commander In Chief.
Foxx is yet to receive an offer for the movie, but Emmerich is very keen on him and it’s thought the actor is open to the movie.
Samuel L. Jackson Joins RoboCop Remake
Samuel L. Jackson continues his mission to try and be in every major franchise going, as the actor has boarded the remake of RoboCop, opposite Joel Kinnaman in the title role. Jackson will play a big shot TV mogul named Pat Novak, a powerful force in the world inhabited by RoboCop.
The original movie featured many interstitial commercials and television parodies edited throughout the opening scenes of Alex J. Murphy’s transformation into a cyborg officer on the Detroit Police Department. This casting news indicates that the reboot might involve similar scenes, or at least make a nod to this particular future’s hyper-evolution in small screen entertainment.
RoboCop begins shooting in Toronto later this summer with Jose Padilha directing. Gary Oldman also stars. (Source: THR)
Russo Brothers In Talks To Direct Captain America 2
With Joe Johnston having moved on, it’s been revealed that Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are in final talks to direct Captain America 2 for Marvel, according to THR. Back in March the brothers were considered top contenders for the directorial job, along with F. Gary Gray and George Nolfi, but now they’ve got the job.
The Russo’s only have two features under their belts, neither of which are exactly big budget, effects filled flicks. They’ve made the comedies Welcome To Collinwood and You, Me and Dupree. They are best known for their work on the small screen, producing and directing episodes of Community, Happy Endings, and Arrested Development.
Captain America: The First Avenger scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have written the sequel screenplay. Chris Evans will be back as the title character, with Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury. No other cast members have been confirmed yet.
Shooting is set to commence after Marvel wraps on Thor 2 later this year, for release April 4th, 2014.
