Gary Ross Won’t Direct Hunger Games Sequel

April 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few days ago a report emerged saying that tough negotiations were going on between Lionsgate and director Gary Ross over the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire. Apparently it had been tricky coming to terms for the first movie and the follow-up was proving just as awkward.

At the time the report emerged, it seemed likely the two sides would sort thing out, and that Ross would indeed helm the movie. However it turns out that was wishful thinking as it’s now been revealed that Ross is officially out and has decided to go for a different movie that will give him a bigger paycheck and more control. The director had been offered a substantial pay rise for Catching Fire, but he decided he’s prefer to a different movie, based on his own original script. It’s also believed The Hunger Games was his favourite of Suzanne Collins’ book, and he had less interest in making the others.

Catching Fire will shoot this autumn for release November 2013, but Lionsgate will now have to rush to find a new director. (Source: The Playlist)

Savages Trailer – Taylor Kitsch & Aaron Johnson in Oliver Stone’s latest

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It looks like Oliver Stone is moving back to the world of crime, drama and mixed film stocks with Savages, which seems more like his successful films on the 90s than the likes of Alexander and Wall Street 2. In the film, Laguna Beach ‘entrepreneurs’ Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch), run a lucrative, homegrown industry – raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Blake Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town, until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them. When the merciless head of the BC, Elena (Salma Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bond among these three friends, Ben and Chon – with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (John Travolta) – wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills. Savages is due out in the UK on September 28th, 2012.

Captain America 2 Set For April 2014

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel’s interconnected universe of superheroes doesn’t end with The Avengers. In fact it’s only the beginning, as Iron Man 3 is already set for May 3rd, 2013, then on November 15th, 2013 it’s time for Thor 2. Now Marvel has announced that April 4th, 2014 is the day we’ll be getting Captain America 2.

Marvel/Disney issued a brief press release, saying, ‘The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger on April 4, 2014. The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.’

It would appear therefore that we can expect both Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson in the movie, and with the likes of Cobie Smulders (who plays S.H.I.E.L.D’s Maria Hill in Avengers Assembled) having signed lengthy contracts covering a lot of Marvel movies, we can probably expect more continuing characters too.

Incidentally there’s still a May 16th, 2014, release date held aside for another Marvel movie, although as yet it’s not been been announced what it will be.

Sam Shepard Jumps Out Of The Furnace

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Christian Bale and Zoe Saldana have been attached to Out Of The Furnace for a while, it’s only now that Relativity Media have closed deals with Bale and Saldana, along with Casey Affleck and Sam Shepard, to star in the film, with the last of those a new addition to the cast.

Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) will direct, with Bale as older Russell Baze alongside Affleck, who will play his younger brother Rodney Baze Jr. Saldana is Bale’s love interest Lena Warren, while Shepard will play Red, Russell and Rodney Baze’s uncle. Production is set to begin in Braddock, Pennsylvania later this month.

The film is a drama about fate, circumstance, and redemption. Russell and his younger brother live in the economically depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother. (Source: Variety)

Raging Bull II Set To Shoot This Summer (Yes, really)

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The idea of making Raging Bull II is probably only a good idea to those with dollar signs in their eyes, but it appears it’s happening. It’s actually been in the works for a long time, with the first reports emerging in 2006 that the book Raging Bull II by Chris Anderson, Sharon McGehee and Jake LaMotta was being quietly adapted to film.

The movie will chart LaMotta’s life both before and after the Scorsese movie, looking at his youth as well as his tumultuous later life. He was certainly busy, getting through six wives, going broke and trying to re-emerge as a decent human being.

Perhaps thankfully De Niro won’t be cashing in on this one, with the role of LaMotta going to William Forsythe instead. It’s not the first time Forsythe has taken over a De Niro role, as he also played Al Capone in the TV follow-up to Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables.

Martin Guigui will direct from a script he co-wrote with Rustam Branaman. He’s casting the film now with the hope to begin production in June. You can head over to Moviehole for a bit of a casting breakdown.

I wouldn’t get too upset about this if I were you, as it’ll probably got straight to DVD and then be completely forgotten.

X-Men: First Class Sequel Shooting In January

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a bit of uncertainty over when Fox would shoot their sequel to X-Men: First Class, much of which has been due to the fact that with stars like Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence’s career going stratospheric, it’s been tough to get the scheduling right. However, now 20th Century Fox has announced that they will begin shooting their X-Men: First Class Sequel in January.

Tensions between the Fox and Lionsgate ran high last month as Fox was considering filming First Class 2 in the Autumn, using their option with actress Jennifer Lawrence. This would have potentially overlapped with Lionsgate’s plans for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, which needs to shoot before the year is out to hit its November 2013 release date. Lawrence is tied in to both franchises, which is great for her but does cause a scheduling nightmare.

All the main cast from X-Men: First Class are expected to return. Matthew Vaughn will once more direct. (Source: THR)

Ken Jeong Joins Pain and Gain

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Bay must have enjoyed working with ken Jeong on Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, as he’s now cast The Hangover actor in his dark comedy, Pain and Gain, which recently started shooting.

The comedy is based on a true story about a pair of bodybuilders in Florida who get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping that goes terribly wrong. The actor will play the Johnny Wu, although THR has no character details. Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are playing the body builders.

Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rebel Wilson, Rob Corddry and Anthony Mackie also star in what will be a very different film for Michael Bay. The director has finally started shooting after years of putting Pain & Gain back so he could make giant robot movies.

Nicole Kidman In Talks For Grace Of Monaco

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many of Hollywood’s top actresses have been after the lead in Grace Of Monaco, but it seems Oliver Dahan has decided who he wants, as THR reports that Nicole Kidman is in talks to portray Grace Kelly in the film.

The biopic takes place between December 1961 and November 1962, and tells the story of the former Oscar winner and mother of two, who had retired from acting when she became the wife of the ruler of a European nation. The starlet was called upon to save Monaco from an escalating situation regarding its standing as a tax haven, with French leader Charles de Gaulle giving her husband, Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, six months to reform its tax laws. While seen by many as essentially arm candy for the prince, Kelly maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup.

Dahan is best known for directing Marion Cotillard to an Oscar in the Edith Piaf biopic La Vie en rose, is helming the period movie. Grace Of Monaco meanwhile is a $15 million production that is being compared in tone to The King’s Speech.

Jeremy Renner Says It’s None Of Your Business If He’s Gay Or Not!

April 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jeremy Renner is now officially a star, because people are speculating over his sexuality! Everything from the fact he’s never married to taking his mum to the Oscars has been grist to the speculation mill. Now Renner has been chatting to The Hollywood Reporter and touches on the rumours surrounding his sexuality while saying the he works hard to keep his private life private.

“I want my personal life to be personal, and it’s not f—ing true,” he says of the suppositions, which include everything from him being gay to what women he’s dating. “And I don’t care if you’re talking about things that are true, you’re still talking about my personal life. How about I go peek in your window, take what underwear you wore last night, whose husband you were f—ing, and shove that in the megaphone throughout your neighborhood? How does that feel?”

And while he may never have married, he has had long relationships with women, including one five-year relationship while he was in his 20s and another that ended two years ago after 4 1⁄2 years.

It also turns out it’s a bad idea to diss his scarf or call him a ‘fag’ (we’re not sure which one he was more upset about), as he say that a few years ago in a bar, “This guy chokes me with the scarf I was wearing. He called me a fag ’cause I was wearing a scarf! Then he shoved my sister and I got behind him and I choked him out — put him to sleep.”

Renner’s star is likely to go stratospheric this summer with The Avengers and The Bourne Ultimatum. 2012 really is gonna be his year.

Ted – Green Band Trailer

April 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Red Band trailer for Ted arrived the other day and got people very exicted for what looks like it could be a hilarious comedy from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. Now the Green Band version is here, which features largely new footage and plenty more jokes. ed revolves around an average Boston guy (Mark Wahlberg) who, when he was young, was granted his dearest wish, that his teddy bear would come to life. Years later the teddy is still his best friend, but the relationship has become strained as rather than being a sweet and nice Care Bears type creature, Ted is a carousing, irresponsible, womanising, pot-smoking slacker, who is getting in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves (Mila Kunis).’ A UK release is set for August 3rd.
