First Look At Tom Hardy & Shia Labeouf in Lawless

March 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Hardy isn’t just going up against the Bat this summer, he’s also taking on the Federal Government as a bootlegger in Lawless, which until recently was known as The Wettest County. Now the first official shot from the film has appeared in the print edition of EW (via The Playlist)

Directed by John Hillcoat from a script by him and Proposition cohort Nick Cave, the movie is based on Matt Bodurant’s book about the author’s grandfather and two great-uncles, who were part of a fierce criminal gang at the centre of the US’s moonshine trade during prohibition. The story also follows a writer named Sherwood Anderson, who is on the trail of the bootlegging gang.

The film has a great cast, with Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska onboard. It’s out in the US in August and should hopefully arrive here around the same time.

James Cameron Reaches The Bottom Of The Mariana Trench

March 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Cameron is not only a ridiculously successful director, he’s also an extremely accomplished deep sea submersible diver, having made over 33 trips to the wreck of the Titanic, as well as another 40 trips to the bottom of the ocean in other parts of the world.

More recently he’s been planning a trip to the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean and a place that only two people have ever been, when Swiss engineer, Jacques Piccard, and US navy captain, Don Walsh, went their down there for 20 minutes in 1960.

Nobody has been there in the last 42 years, except that now James Cameron has! He took his sub, Deepsea Challenger, nearly seven miles down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench – which is about 200 miles south-west of the Pacific island of Guam – and spent time exploring there as part of a National Geographic expedition early on Monday morning.

The trench is a mile deeper than Mount Everest is tall as well as around 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon, and the water pressure is so great that if Cameron’s sub sprang even the tiniest leak it would instantly explode, with the pressure being the equivalent of having several cars sitting on your toes. Thankfully though, Deepsea Challenger made it through the dive in one piece, allowing Cameron to equal the surprisingly long-standing record and return to the surface safely.

He beat several other teams who are also planning trips into the trench in the next few months.

Project X Star Thomas Mann Will Be King Dork

March 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Project X star Thomas Mann has joined the cast of King Dork, which is being put together by Will Ferrell’s production company, with Casa de Mi Padre director Matt Piedmont helming.

The film is about Sam and Tom, two losers who use their love of rock and roll music to get through their tumultuous high school days. Mann will play Tom, while Keir Gilchrist is circling the Sam role. Nick Offerman is eyeing the part of Tom’s stepfather.

D.V. DeVincentis is writing the screenplay, based on the novel of the same name by Frank Portman. Shooting will begin in June following a very long period of development, as King Dork was actually the first project announced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay when they formed their Gary Sanchez Productions company in 2006.

The Hunger Games Breaks Box Office Records

March 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was no doubt The Hunger Games was going to be big, the only question was how big. Many were surprised last week when tracking said the film could open as high as $130 million in the US, but in the end even that turned out to be too conservative, as it ended up taking $155 million in its first three days in North America.

That’s the third biggest three-day opening ever, behind the final Harry Potter movie and The Dark Knight. The film also had the fifth biggest opening day ever, taking $68 million on Friday, and perhaps most surprisingly, by Saturday it had already become Lionsgate’s highest grossing movie ever. Worldwide the film took $214 million, a particularly impressive figure considering Suzanne Collins’ books are barely known in many countries.

It’s a hugely impressive start and has stunned many who had assumed this sort of opening was impossible for a non-sequel, but the film film lit the imagine of young people, most particularly young women, who are becoming an increasingly important demographic, having been largely igrnoed by Hollywood for years.

The only other new entry in the US top 10 was October Baby, a film that’s aimed squarely at conservative Christian viewers and which has an anti-abortion message. It took $1.7 million to place eighth.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of 23rd-25th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $155.0 $155.0
2 21 Jump Street $21.3 $71.0
3 Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax $13.1 $177.3
4 John Carter $5.0 $62.3
5 Act Of Valor $2.0 $65.9
6 Project X $1.9 $51.7
7 A Thousand Words $1.9 $14.9
8 October Baby $1.7 $1.7

Olympia Dukakis Describes Latest Character As A ‘Foul-mouthed, Lesbian Walter Matthau’

March 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Olympia Dukakis & Brenda Fricker in Cloudburst

The BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival opened last night with a gala screening of Cloudburst, starring Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker. Just ahead of the screening, Dukakis spoke to The Guardian about the movie, saying that she “loves” the idea that her character in the film is a ‘foul-mouthed, lesbian Walter Matthau’.

She says about Cloudburst, “It’s about two old lesbians who run off to Canada to get married, so that’s completely what it’s about. And the character of Stella is great: very belligerent and in your face. [Director] Thom Fitzgerald kept pushing me out of my comfort zone and making me say things that were more and more outrageous. I looked at the film in post-production and could barely recognise myself. I thought, My God, that’s a man!”

Dukakis, who won an Oscar for Moonstruck and played Anna Madrigal in the mini-series of Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City novels, was also asked about her status as a gay icon. She says, “I appreciate that my work is seen and understood and feels relevant to people. And I’m lucky enough to have friends of all different sexual persuasions, some of which are utterly inexplicable to me. So it’s all good. Last year I was grand marshal at the San Francisco gay parade, and that was good too. You get to ride around in a car and wave at people: that’s about it. My arm got so tired from the waving that my brother had to hold it up for me.”

The 26th London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival runs until April1st.

Chloe Moretz Or Haley Bennett May Be Carrie

March 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

MGM is busy mining its back catalogue for properties to remake and one it’s keen on giving a do-over is Stephen King’s Carrie, with Boys Don’t Cry helmer Kimberly Peirce attached to direct. Now the director and studio are closing in on a young actress for the lead role, with Vulture reporting that Chloe Moretz and Haley Bennett (who’s little known now but will be seen alongside Ryan Gosling in Terrence Malick’s Lawless) are the top contenders.

It is rather odd that the top candidates for a role like this are so far apart in age, as Chloe Moretz is 15-years-old and Haley Bennett is 24. Other actresses such as Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning, Bella Heathcote and Lily Collins have read for Carrie, while The Descendants star Shailene Woodley was reportedly offered the title role outright, but she passed. It now appears it’s down to Moretz and Bennett though.

Kimberly Peirce has also shown interest in Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore to play Carrie’s crazed mother, although it doesn’t seem any offers have been made yet. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the script, which will reportedly stay more faithful to author Stephen King’s original novel. It isn’t known when production may begin on Carrie, but it’s a bit of a priority for MGM.

Melissa Leo Enters Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion

March 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken a long time for Joseph Kosinski to get his follow-up to Tron: Legacy ready to shoot, but things have finally come together and filming recently began in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. However it appears the cast isn’t quite complete, as Deadline reports that Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo has just signed up.

The film is set on an Earth no longer inhabited by humans after the planet became too toxic to live on. Tom Cruise stars as a drone mechanic, one of the last men left on the planet, who discovers a woman (Andrea Riseborough) has crash landed on the surface. The man and woman go on a journey of discovery and learn they have not been told the truth about what happened on Earth.

It isn’t known what character Melissa Leo will play. Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also star. It’ll be in cinemas in 2013.

Gay Themed Movie Eases Tension In The Balkans

March 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While huge strides have been made for both gay rights and acceptance of homosexuality in a lot of European countries, things still remain difficult in many of the former Communist countries. However a film called The Parade is helping to break down barriers in the Balkans.

The AP reports on the fact the movie, from a Serbia director, is now the biggest box office hit in the former Yugoslavia in years, even as it challenges both the region’s ethnic divide and its deeply rooted homophobia.

While tensions still remain between Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia, all three countries seems keen on The Parade, with director Srdjan Dragojevic commenting, “The whole region is united for the first time in liking this film.”

The Parade, which won a trio of gongs at the Berlin Film Festival, is about a gay couple in the Serbian capital of Belgrade who try to organise a gay pride event in the face of threats and violence from far-right groups. To help them they recruit a Serbian war veteran to protect the parade; who enlists a ragtag group of former fighters, including a Croatian, a Bosnian Muslim and a Kosovo Albanian.

While The Parade is a humourous film promoting both unity and diversity, some gay rights activists have had issues over whether the film actually will promote gay rights. However the director says about his film, “It is very important for people to recognise the simple message that it is irrelevant what nationality you are, how you pray or who you go to bed with.”

Incredibly in Bosnia, The Parade has been more popular than movie like Avatar, while the film sold 150,000, which is incredibly impressive in a country with only four million people.
