Jared Harris On For Lincoln

November 29, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It seems Steven Spielberg is determined that every role in his upcoming Abraham Lincoln biopic should be filled by a recognisable face. Now British actor Jared Harris, whose profile is about the jump much higher due to playing Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, has joined the cast of Lincoln.

Variety reports Harris will play Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general in the Civil War who later became the 18th President of the United States. Daniel Day-Lewis is set to portray Abraham Lincoln in this biopic, which focuses on the final few year on the President’s life, through to his assassination.

Other cast members include Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hal Holbrook, James Spader, John Hawkes and Tim Blake Nelson. Shooting is expected to begin soon.

Director Ken Russell Dies Aged 84

November 28, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While his films were sometimes strange, controversial or outright bonkers, Ken Russell was undoubtedly one of the most interesting British directors of the past 40 years. Sadly though, it’s now being reported that he’s died at the age of 84.

Russell started out in television in the late 50s and early 60s, developing a flamboyant style that stayed with him throughout his film career. After a series of documentaries and TV movies, he made his cinematic debut with 1967’s Billion Dollar Brain. However it was his follow-up film, Women In Love, that really put him on the map.

The film was controversial for being one of the first movies to get full frontal male nudity past the British censors, with a scene featuring Oliver Reed and Alan Bates wrestling in front of a fire. It put Russell on the map and remains one of the most interesting pieces of 60s British cinema.

However, while Russell is often painted as a controversial director, it was more that he was constantly trying to push the envelope. So while The Devils, about a group of posessed nuns, was indeed controversial, other movies like The Who’s Tommy showed he was more interested in trying new things and experimenting with what could be done in cinema, rather than just trying to shock people with each new film.

Although the impact of his work tailed off after his 60s and 70s heyday, 1980s movies like Gothic, Salome’s Last Dance and The Lair Of The White Worm are still wonderfully in your face and interesting, even if they’re not brilliant movies. In the 90s he went back into television, making both TV movies and documentaries. As he aged, his work rate tailed off, with his last credit being one of five directors who worked on the anthology horror release, Trapped Ashes.

Ken Russell passed away in his sleep on Sunday. However his legend will live on, as the BFI is already planning a cinema re-release for The Devils next March, as well as a first ever DVD release for the fascinating film.

Breaking Dawn Tops Thanksgiving Box Office

November 28, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Despite several new releases hitting US cinemas over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, Twilight: Breaking Dawn has topped the box office chart, adding another $62 million over the holiday. That takes its total to $221 million in North America and over $500 million worldwide in only 10 days.

While a holdover release topped the chart, it wasn’t all bad news for new releases. The Muppets took $42 million in its first five days, which certainly isn’t bad for a movie that only cost $45 million to make. With good word of mouth, it should do pretty well in the weeks to come as well.

Arthur Christmas had less to cheer about as it came in fourth with $17 million, behind animated competitor Happy Feet Two (which opened last week). The hope is that with its festive theme it’ll keep picking up family audiences over the next few weeks, although you would have thought that releasing it closer to Christmas would have made more sense.

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo came in fifth on the chart, but its $15 million was well ahead of the $11 million it had been expected to do in its first weekend. Paramount decided to role out the film relatively slowly, opening it on just over a thousand screens (compared to over 3000 for the week’s other main releases). Although the strong opening bodes well for the weeks to come, many will feel Paramount should have given the $150 million film a stronger push to begin with, as it’s timid approach could have lost it tens of million in potential box office.

Take a look below for the US box office for the weekend of November 25th-27th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 $42.0 $221.3
2 The Muppets $29.5 $42.0
3 Happy Feet Two $13.4 $43.7
4 Arthur Christmas $12.7 $17.0
5 Hugo $11.3 $15.3
6 Jack And Jill $10.3 $57.4
7 Immortals $8.8 $68.6
8 Puss In Boots $7.4 $135.3
9 Tower Heist $7.3 $65.3
10 The Descendants $7.2 $10.7

Newlyweds Trailer – Take a look at Ed Burns’ latest

November 26, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ed Burns burst onto the movie scene in 1995 as the writer, director and star of The Brothers McMullen, but he’s never really fully capitalised on the promise he showed there. However Newlyweds has been billed as a bit of a return to form, and indeed was chosen as the closing night film of the Tribeca Film Festival. In the film, Buzzy (Edward Burns) and Katie (Caitlin FitzGerald) are a newly married couple living a seemingly conflict-free life. But when Buzzy’s damaged and impulsive half-sister Linda (Kerry Bishe) arrives at their doorstep expecting to stay for an indefinite period in their Tribeca loft, her antics threaten to disrupt the couple’s commitment to an “easy” marriage. Meanwhile, with Katie’s sister Marsha projecting suspicions of her own husband’s infidelity onto Buzzy, will the couple’s formerly trusting and insulated life be able to withstand the dysfunctions of their respective siblings? No UK release date is currently set.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island UK Trailer

November 26, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To watch this video, you need the latest Flash-Player and active javascript in your browser.

Parody trailers that make a movie from one genre look like it’s from another (e.g. making The Shining seems like a comedy) are popular of Youtube, and now we have the same thing for an actual movie. The US trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island hit a couple of weeks ago and painted this follow-up to Journey To The Center Of The Earth as a rather silly, fun family romp, but not the UK trailer turns everything far darker and more dramatic (until the end at least). It does look like it might be oddly entertaining though. Brendan Fraser bailed on this one after director Erik Brevig was replaced by Brad Peyton, and so this time Dwayne Johnson’s along for the ride, playing Hutcherson’s prospective stepfather, while Vanessa Hudgens and Luis Guzman also have to deal with various strange beasties on the titular island, all while looking for Michael Caine! It’s due in cinemas February 10th.

Six New John Carter Pics Emerge

November 26, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Six new images have debuted from John Carter (via SFX), as Disney ramps up the hype in the hope of making the movie a must see before its debut next March 9th. The pics give us a further insight into the alien world, which does seem to be channeling The Phantom Menace. Hopefully the film will look a little more like its own beast when a new trailer arrived on December 1st. Until then enjoy the Martian creatures and Taylor Kitsch as John Carter showing off his buffness.

Rachel Weisz Boards The Railway Man

November 26, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Colin Firth recently signed on to star in The Railway Man, but since then the only other person who’s come onboard the movie in War Horse star Jeremy Irvine, who’ll play a younger version of the same character. However, now Variety reports that Rachel Weisz has signed on the dottted line to star in the movie.

Director Jonathan Teplitzky’s (Burning Man) film is is based on Eric Lomax’s autobiography, which details his capture by Japanese soldiers in World War II, where he was sent to work on the infamous “death railway” in Burma. The story is split between his capture as a young soldier, and his life as an adult who still can’t fully grasp the torturous experience.

Colin Firth will play the adult Eric Lomax, and Jeremy Irvine will portray the younger version. Rachel Weisz will portray his wife, Patti, who convinces him to set off on a journey to try and reconcile with his former captors.

Shooting starts on The Railway Man in February.

Ben Whishaws Skyfall Character Revealed

November 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For a while now we’ve known that Ben Whishaw would be in the new James Bond movie, but even at the recent press conference where the film’s title was announced, director Sam Mendes refused to say exactly who Whishaw would be playing. Now THR has managed to uncover Ben’s role, so if you dont want to know, stop reading now!

Whishaw will be taking over a classic part in the franchise, as he’ll be playing gadget-master Q. The part was famously played by Desmond Llewelyn through most of Bond history (36 years in fact) with John Cleese taking over the role in the Pierce Brosnan era. However since the Daniel Craig reboot, there’s been no sign of Q (in fact the whole tendency towards outlandish gadgets has been downplayed), but now he’s coming back in Skyfall! As the actor is 12 years Craig’s junior, it’ll be the first time Q has been younger than the person playing Bond.

There are still a few other actors, such as Albert Finney and Ralph Fiennes, whose roles in Skyfall are unknown, but expect info to leak out soon.

The movie is currently filming and will hit cinemas October 2012.

Bloody Poster For Jolies Blood & Honey

November 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The first poster for Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood & Honey, has dropped, and it’s a rather arty, graphic number, with a blood-spattered map of the Balkans making the shape of two people preparing to kiss. How nice!

Jolie’s film, which she also wrote, is set during the Bosnian War, and follow Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, who re-encounters Ajla, a Bosnian who’s now a captive in the camp he oversees. Their once promising connection has become ambiguous now that both their motives have changed.

The film’s getting a late December release in the US, ready for an Oscar run, but not firm UK date has been set yet.

Director Terence Davies Says ‘Being Gay Has Ruined My Life’

November 25, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s a pretty harsh assessment, but director Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives), has told the Irish Times that, “Being gay has ruined my life”. In an interview ahead of the release of his first movie in ten years, the Rachel Wiesz starring Deep Blue Sea, he touched upon his sexuality and didn’t give it a particularly good assessment.

He says, “I hate it [being gay]. I’ll go to my grave hating it. Which is why I have been celibate. One-night stands are not for me. I was not good looking. I did not have a good body. Nobody was interested when I was young. Now I am old. I am still not good looking. I know what I am. I will always loathe it. It has killed part of my soul.”

Davies was born in 1945 and so grew up during a time when homosexual behaviour was illegal. While you’d have hoped he’d have managed to enjoy the days of gay liberation through the 70s and 80s, it seems he, like many older men, has never truly come to terms with his sexuality.

He says that once after a screening of his 1983 work, The Terence Davies Trilogy, a man complained that its bleak view of gay life was excessive. “It was the only time I’ve been rude in those situations. I said: ‘Sit down! How dare you say that? You’re good looking. You don’t know what it’s like to grow up in a time and place where homosexuality was illegal. Sit down!’”

It’s certainly interesting how much he links being happy with your sexuality with being good looking.

However he’s decided he hates being gay and that nothing is going to change that. Indeed he seems to have little desire to come to terms with it. It’s a great shame though, especially as he also says, “Well, most of the time I put a front on. I like a good laugh. I have a good sense of humour. But I am very lonely. Very lonely indeed.”
