Is A Will & Grace Reunion Coming? The Cast Hints Something’s Happening

September 26, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-and-grace-reunionIt looks like some sort of Will & Grace reunion is happening. Yesterday the cast posted shots on social media showing that the four main characters are back together for… something.

That’s been followed by a mysterious teaser which still doesn’t quite explain what they’re up to. Suggestions have ranged from a one-off reunion special to a short film in support of Hillary Clinton and against The Donald. The latter seems more likely as the teaser hints towards the upcoming Presidential election and we really can’t imagine Will, Grace, Jack and Karen will come out in support of Trump (well, Karen probably would, but that’s enough reason not to vote for him on its own).

Whatever the quartet is up to, it’ll be great to see them back together again, even if only briefly. Take a look at some of the pics and teaser below. [Read more…]

The Pass Trailer – Russell Tovey and Arinze Kene turn closeted gay footballers

September 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

pass-slideAfter opening the prestigious BFI Flare Festival, The Pass will be presented as part of the BFI London Film Festival before being released in UK cinemas, December 2016. The film is a British drama from debut Director Ben A. Williams, starring Russell Tovey (Looking, Being Human, The History Boys) and Arinze Kene.

Adapted for the screen by John Donnelly from his hit play first presented at the Royal Court Theatre, The Pass is the story of three very different nights over 10 years in the life of a Premier League Footballer. Jason (Russell Tovey) is at the beginning of his career, and on the night before his first big international match he and long-time friend and team-mate Ade (Arinze Kene) share a hotel room, trying to beat the inevitable pre-match tensions with locker-room banter and teenage high-jinks. Out of nowhere Jason kisses Ade. The emotional repercussions of this pass, and the decisions that follow on and off the pitch, have a major impact on every aspect of the public and private lives of both men across the next decade, in a sporting world where image is everything.

The cast includes Hollyoaks heart-throb Nico Mirallegro and theatre and TV actress Lisa McGrillis. Tovey, McGrillis and Mirallegro all reprise the roles they originally performed on stage. The Pass will be released in the UK by Lionsgate Films. [Read more…]

Trans Actress Alexis Arquette Has Died, Aged 47

September 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alexis-arquetteAlexis Arquette, transgender actress and commentator, has died, her family has confirmed. It’s believed she had been battling a lengthy illness. She was 47.

Her brother Richmond left the following statement on Facebook: ‘Our brother Robert, who became our brother Alexis, who became our sister Alexis, who became our brother Alexis, passed this morning September 11, at 12:32 am. He was surrounded by all of his brothers and sisters, one of his nieces and several other loved ones. We were playing music for him and he passed during David Bowie’s Starman. As per his wishes, we cheered at the moment that he transitioned to another dimension.

‘I am feeling immense gratitude to have been afforded the luxury of sharing life with him/her, for learning from Alexis, for being given the gift of being able to love her/him and to be loved by him/her. He was a force.

‘He died as he lived, on his own terms. I am immensely grateful that it was fast and painless. It was an incredibly moving experience and I am humbled and grateful to have been able to have been with him as he began his journey onward.

‘Thank you, Alexis, I love you and will love you always.’

Born Robert Arquette, Alexis appeared in films including Down & Out In Beverley Hills, Last Exit To Brooklyn, Threesome, Bride of Chucky, The Wedding Singer and Blended. Her transition was followed in the 2007 documentary, Alexis Arquette: She’s My Brother. Although her outspoken comments sometimes proved controversial, she was amongst the highest profile transgender people in the entertainment industry. She is survived by siblings Patricia Arquette, Rosanna Arquette, Richmond Arquette and David Arquette.

Theo and Hugo (Cinema Review)

September 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: François Nambot, Geoffrey Couët
Director: Jacques Martineau, Olivier Ducastel
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: September 9th 2016 (UK)

Like all classic romances, this one starts in a sex club. Okay, Romeo & Juliet didn’t start in a sex club, but that’s where Theo & Hugo opens. The titular characters are there to get down and dirty with other guys. Theo (Geoffrey Couët) sees Hugo (François Nambot) across the neon-lit room, and is immediately drawn to him. Eventually the duo end up getting down and dirty, having rip-roaring, earth-shaking sex, while surrounded by other guys.

While that’s usually the end for two people following a sex club encounter, both Theo and Hugo feel a connection and decide to leave together. However, their flirtation seems to come to a swift end when Theo admits he didn’t use a condom. Unsurprisingly, the HIV+ Hugo is far from impressed. After Hugo arranges for Theo to go to the hospital to arrange tests and post-exposure prophylaxis, it seems like that will be it for them, but over the course of 12 hours they find themselves increasingly drawn to one another. Mark Ruffalo Addresses Controversy Over Matt Bomer’s Casting As Transgender Sex Worker

September 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

mark-ruffaloShortly after it began to become widely known that Mat Bomer is playing a transgender sex worker in the recently filmed Anything, a backlash began. Many in the trans community felt the casting was inappropriate, setting off a bit of a storm on social media.

The anger stemmed from people feeling cisgender men should not play trans characters (with some suggesting that it helped reinforce prejudices that trans people are merely wearing a costume), that the movie was playing with a dangerous trope of trans women as sex workers, and that by casting Bomer they had deprived a trans actress of what could have been her big break. Initially bother Bomer and executive producer Mark Ruffalo made no comment, but now Ruffalo has addressed the controversy on Twitter.

He says: ‘To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It’s time… In all honesty I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making “The Normal Heart”.’

Some welcomed Ruffalo’s comments, such as trans actress Jen Richards. Her heartfelt anger at news of the casting was one of the main catalysts for the anger felt, with her comments including that ‘When @MattBomer plays a trans sex worker, he is telling the world that underneath it all, trans women like me are still really just men… Dear @MarkRuffalo & @MattBomer: if you release this movie, it will directly lead to violence against already at risk trans women.’ However, after Ruffalo spoke out, she replied, ‘Thank you @MarkRuffalo, this means a lot. I would love to talk to you about it, and how to move forward positively.’

However, others were less welcoming, suggesting that a conversation wasn’t what was needed – a change of direction was. As the movie is already in the can, it’s unlikely Bomer could be recast, but the hope will be that the protest will have an effect on both Anything and the casting/depiction of trans characters in the future. Matt Bomer Playing Transgender Sex Worker In New Movie Anything, Which Has Just Finished Shooting

August 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac 16 Comments

matt-bomer-shirtlessThis one has managed to fly under our radar, but it’s just been revealed that the film Anything has finished shooting, which will feature Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker. He’s part of a great cast that also includes, Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney, John Carroll Lynch, Micah Hauptman, Margot Bingham and Melora Hardin.

In the movie, which is based on a play by Timothy McNeil, Lynch plays a man named Early Landry who is suicidal over the death of his wife. Early moves from Mississippi to Los Angeles, where he can be under the watchful eye of his protective sister, Laurette (Tierney). However, when Early begins an intense new friendship with Freda (Bomer), a transgender sex worker, the unlikely new couple must reconcile their vastly different backgrounds as they fill the void in each other’s lives.

A couple of years ago, Bomer spoke of his interest in starring onstage in McNeil’s play, telling Deadline, “I would love to come back, and I actually read a beautiful new play by Timothy McNeil that I am going to start just seeing if there’s some interest in it. It’s a really mature, very literary piece that is very powerful and I think very timely. It’s a hell of a piece of theater. And you know, in the great tradition of the theater, I refuse to be any one thing. Or any one person.”

However, the fact a film version was coming and Bomer was starring hasn’t been mentioned too much until now. That said, one of the film’s executive producers, Mark Ruffalo, has been talking about it on social media, although not too many details have been known. He now comments, “I’m very happy to be part of this daring project. Love is at the essence of great storytelling and transcends all discrimination and politicization.”

Ruffalo and writer/director McNeil have known each other since their studies with the famed Stella Adler and together with Louise Runge, Micah Hauptman and Ofrit Peres, have collaborated to bring the play from the stage to the screen. It’s not finished shooting in Los Angeles.

Some may see Ruffalo’s comment above as an attempt to head off possible criticism about casting the cisgender Bomer in a transgender role, and also possible stereotyping around the fact the trans character is a sex worker. It’s a bit early to know if these will become issues, but there’s no doubt it’s good to see more trans characters in film.

Paul Iacono, Kathryn Erbe & Kathy Najimy Sign Up For Gay-Themed Movie, Dating My Mother

August 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-iaconoDirector Mike Roma recently charmed an awful lot of people with his web series, Danny The Manny. Now he’s about to start shooting his first movie, and he’s pulled together a great cast for the gay-themed project, called (slightly disturbingly) Dating My Mom.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent’s Kathryn Erbe and newcomer Patrick Reilly will take the central roles, with Kathy Najimy, Paul Iacono and James Le Gros also onboard to star. The movie explores the intimate and sometimes tumultuous relationship between a single mother (Erbe) and her gay son (Reilly). Together they navigate the world of online dating as they search for their versions of ‘Mr. Right.’ Le Gros will be as Erbe’s love interest, Najimy plays her neighbor, which Iacono plays Reilly’s potential boyfriend.

The movie is due to start shooting next week in New Jersey. It’s not known yet when we might get to see it.

Jared Leto Says ‘A Gay Leading Man Wouldn’t Have The Same Opportunities As A Straight One’

August 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jared-leto-joker-slideWhile an increasing number of TV and smaller movie stars have come out in recent years, we’re yet to have an LGBT a-list actor. Many have suggested this isn’t a coincidence, and it appears Jared Leto agrees with them.

Talking to GQ, the Oscar-winning Suicide Squad star was asked if he thought America was ready to accept a gay leading man. “I think so,” said Leto, although after a little prodding he changed that to the less definite, “I hope so”.

There are reasons it’s only a hope, as he adds, “I definitely don’t think a gay leading man would have the same opportunities as a straight leading man. I don’t think that. Not for a single second. I don’t know if that’s offensive or not, but that’s my thought right now. It shouldn’t be that way. I don’t think you’ll have as many opportunities.”

He continued by suggest it was the same for minorities, adding, “What a word, ’minority,’. Have we taken that word off the list yet? ‘Cause it should be. Anyway, no, I think that this is still a very conservative business.”

Leto certainly isn’t the only person to think so. While individually most people in Hollywood are quite liberal, when it comes to business and the millions of dollars they’re throwing around, they tend to be far more timid and afraid of anything they think might affect the box office. That makes it far more difficult for gay actors to get major role, and also for mainstream populist movies about LGBT leads to get made, as the perception is it will knock the box office in conservative countries and amongst right wing homophobes. Hopefully that may change, especially if the upcoming The Flash, starring queer actor Ezra Miller, proves a hit.

Justin Bieber Denies Refusing To Film Movie Gay Sex Scene

July 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

justin-bieberFrom that title you might be thinking Justin Bieber has been flirting with the world of twink porn, but it’s actually his representative’s reaction to reports that Bieber say he would only be in a film if a gay sex scene was removed. The pop star was supposedly offered a role in the film Uber Girl, but had one major condition.

Page Six reports that the movie’s co-writer Pete O’Neill told them, “He won’t take the part unless the sex scene with him and one of the male backup dancers is taken out of the final script.”

However, Gossip Cop has since reported that, ‘there’s “no truth” to the New York Post story, and talks about him being in that movie “never happened.”’

It appears Gossip Cop may be right, as Page Six also said that O’Neill ‘wants to cast Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Kiernan Shipka’ [emphasis ours], which suggests none of them hve been approached, and that no studio is currently involved in the project. It may well be that O’Neill was looking for a little publicity for his coming of age project, but it got slightly out of hand.
