Matt Bomer Playing Transgender Sex Worker In New Movie Anything, Which Has Just Finished Shooting

August 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac 16 Comments

matt-bomer-shirtlessThis one has managed to fly under our radar, but it’s just been revealed that the film Anything has finished shooting, which will feature Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker. He’s part of a great cast that also includes, Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney, John Carroll Lynch, Micah Hauptman, Margot Bingham and Melora Hardin.

In the movie, which is based on a play by Timothy McNeil, Lynch plays a man named Early Landry who is suicidal over the death of his wife. Early moves from Mississippi to Los Angeles, where he can be under the watchful eye of his protective sister, Laurette (Tierney). However, when Early begins an intense new friendship with Freda (Bomer), a transgender sex worker, the unlikely new couple must reconcile their vastly different backgrounds as they fill the void in each other’s lives.

A couple of years ago, Bomer spoke of his interest in starring onstage in McNeil’s play, telling Deadline, “I would love to come back, and I actually read a beautiful new play by Timothy McNeil that I am going to start just seeing if there’s some interest in it. It’s a really mature, very literary piece that is very powerful and I think very timely. It’s a hell of a piece of theater. And you know, in the great tradition of the theater, I refuse to be any one thing. Or any one person.”

However, the fact a film version was coming and Bomer was starring hasn’t been mentioned too much until now. That said, one of the film’s executive producers, Mark Ruffalo, has been talking about it on social media, although not too many details have been known. He now comments, “I’m very happy to be part of this daring project. Love is at the essence of great storytelling and transcends all discrimination and politicization.”

Ruffalo and writer/director McNeil have known each other since their studies with the famed Stella Adler and together with Louise Runge, Micah Hauptman and Ofrit Peres, have collaborated to bring the play from the stage to the screen. It’s not finished shooting in Los Angeles.

Some may see Ruffalo’s comment above as an attempt to head off possible criticism about casting the cisgender Bomer in a transgender role, and also possible stereotyping around the fact the trans character is a sex worker. It’s a bit early to know if these will become issues, but there’s no doubt it’s good to see more trans characters in film.

August 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

first-girl-i-loved-slideThe First Girl I Love got a lot of praise on its Sundance debut. Now it’s heading for a US release in October, and so a trailer for the lesbian-themed film has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Winner of the Best of NEXT Audience Award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, First Girl I Loved is a poignant coming-of-age tale that captures all the anxiety, bravery, and heartbreak of first love.

‘On assignment for her high-school yearbook, social-misfit Anne (Dylan Gelula) charmingly hits it off with the beautiful star of the softball team, Sasha (Brianna Hildebrand). But when Anne tells her best friend Clifton (Mateo Arias) about her new crush, he reveals a hidden jealousy that threatens more than just the girls’ budding romance.

‘Writer/director Kerem Sanga tells this remarkably touching story with a multifaceted style that is as fresh as it is daring. Brimming with authenticity and humor, First Girl I Loved offers a delightful, contemporary perspective on the jitters of new romance and the age-old heartbreak of love.

Actress Bella Thorne Reveals She’s Bisexual

August 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bella-thorne18-year-old actress Bella Thorne has been seen in the likes Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Blended, The Duff, and is best known to many as one of the leads in the Disney Channel show Shake It Up!. She’s certainly an actress on the rise, and now she’s let the world know she’s bisexual.

She revealed the news after someone tweeted her asking, “Are you bisexual?”, to which she simply answered, “Yes!”

The reason she was asked is because some pics emerged on the web of her kissing another woman. A few years ago agents would have tried to cover it up, the actor would have issued denials and they’d be seen on the arm of someone of the opposite sex constantly for months afterwards. It’s good to see a young actor now feels they can reveal they’re bisexual without it needing to be a massive deal or part of a tell-all confessional interview.

Thorne is certainly a star on the rise, as she’s got at least seven films in the pipeline, including Amityville: The Awakening, Boo! A Madea Halloween, Midnight Sun and The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. [Read more…]

Doug Liman To Direct Justice League Dark Movie, Dark Universe

August 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanIt’s all change in the world of superheroes. In 2013 Guillermo Del Toro revealed he was working on a comic book movie set in the world of DC’s Justice League Dark. However, he left the director’s chair and decided only to produce.

Doug Liman meanwhile has been attached to helm Fox’s X-Men spin-off Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. He’s now left that movie behind and will be replacing Del Toro on the Justice League Dark film, which is now called Dark Universe.

The movie will revolve around a grittier, darker version of Justice League, with Variety suggesting the film will include John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. However, exact plot details are being kept under wraps. Warner hopes that the movie will be a big part of their expanding DC Universe.

Win The Gay Themed Liebmann On DVD!

August 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Liebmann-dvd-coverThe gay-themed drama Liebmann is out on DVD in the UK now courtesy of TLA Releasing. We’ve teamed up with them to give away three copies in this competition!

Liebmann is a visually evocative, subtly emotive story of a man who must face the ghosts of his past before he can start a new life and engage in the possibility of true happiness.

Eager to leave behind his past in Germany, teacher Antek Liebmann rents a quaint house in the bucolic French countryside and takes a job in the town’s antique shop. The tranquil setting initially appears to be perfect for blending in and disappearing, but life in the rural enclave isn’t quite so simple.

Local hunters are a little trigger-happy, and if that doesn’t make the forest dangerous enough, apparently there is a serial killer stalking victims in the woods. And then there are the neighbours: single mother Genevieve, who is very welcoming, perhaps a little too much so, especially considering Liebmann seems more intrigued by the scruffy and sweet Sébastien, a customer at the antique shop.

No one realizes that Antek has left behind a terrible secret in his own country. The discovery of a mysterious artists’ residency on the edge of town and the arrival of an unexpected visitor from Germany help Liebmann face his past and offer a way out of the darkness.

To be in with a chance of winning The Wave on Blu-ray that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on September 6th, 2016, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]
