It’s the 1970s and Frenchman Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a small-time street entertainer in Paris, dreaming of something big. He believes that he is a wire-walking artist and that he is bigger that drawing a chalk circle and balancing a few feet off the ground.

He decides that the ‘coup’ that he must achieve is to walk between the still uncompleted Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. It is a completely crazy idea – he doesn’t even know how far apart the buildings are – but after achieving a stunt to walk between the towers of Notre Dame, he begins to put his idea into action. Ellen Page Asks, “Now I’m Gay, I Can’t Play A Straight Person?”

Since coming out in February 2014, Ellen Page has taken her place as a major spokesperson for LGBT people. She recently played a lesbian in Freeheld, and she has a couple more projects in the pipeline where she’s playing gay. However, some have wondered whether that’s by necessity as by choice.

Talking to Elle she addresses the issue, saying, “Zachary Quinto is out, and he stars in one of the biggest blockbuster franchises. I have four projects coming up – all gay roles. People ask if I’m concerned about getting pigeonholed. No one asks: ‘Ellen, you’ve done seven straight roles in a row – shouldn’t you shake it up and do something queer? There’s still that double standard. I look at all the things I’ve done in movies: I’ve drugged a guy, tortured someone, become a roller-derby star overnight. But now I’m gay, I can’t play a straight person?”

She’s also been talking to The Guardian about why she felt compelled to come out, saying, “I felt, let’s just please be done with this chapter of discomfort and sadness and anxiety, and hurting my relationships, and all those things that come with it. I felt guilty for not being a visible person for the community, and for having the privilege that I had and not using it. I had got to the point where I was telling myself, you know, you should feel guilty about this. I was an active participant in an element of Hollywood that is gross. I would never judge somebody else for not coming out, but for me, personally, it did start to feel like a moral imperative.”

However she hopes that, “It’ll be amazing, the day when it’s not a thing, when an actress doesn’t feel like she needs to make a speech. That’s obviously the goal.”

Kim Basinger Joins Fifty Shades Darker As Christian Grey’s Former Lover

Despite a critical mauling, Fifty Shades Of Grey ended up being one of the 10 highest grossing movies of 2015 and there are plenty of people out there who can’t wait for the sequels. Anyone who’s read the books will know that there is a major character who doesn’t appear in the first novel, but looms large over the sequels – Elena Lincoln.

Variety reports that Fifty Shades Darker has now found its Elena, as Kim Basinger is in talks for the role. The part is a key one, as Elena is Christian Grey’s business partner and his former lover, who may not be completely over their Red Room romance and isn’t impressed when Christian and Anna begin to grow closer. Her actions becoming increasingly important as the films go on.

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are both due to return as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, with Luke Grimes as Elliott Grey, Eloise Mumford as Kate, and Max Martini as Taylor. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson has left the franchise behind, with James Foley taking over the role. Both Fifty Shades Darker and the third film, Fifty Shades Freed will shoot this year for release in February 2017 and 2018.

New Zootropolis Trailer & Clips – Take your best look yet at Disney’s city full of animals

zootropolis-slideWhile we’ve had a couple of promos for Disney’s Zootropolis (which in the US is called, Zootopia, but for some reason has a slight name change in the UK), they’ve more been extended clips than anything else. However, we’ve now got a proper trailer as well as some more clips.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy.

‘Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootropolis,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”).

New Kubo and the Two Strings Trailer – Into a stop-motion fantasy world with Laika

kubo-character-poster1-slideLaika has garnered a great reputation thanks to the likes of Coraline, Boxtrolls and ParaNorman. They’re sticking with stop-motion for their next movie, Kubo & The Two Strings, which has just launched a new trailer and some character posters, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Kubo and the Two Strings is an epic action-adventure set in a fantastical Japan from acclaimed animation studio LAIKA.  Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of Game of Thrones) ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Hashi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kamekichi (Academy Award nominee Brenda Vaccaro).  But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta.

‘Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.  With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara)  to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.’

The film will be in cinemas next summer.

New The Secret Life of Pets Trailer – What do animals do when people aren’t around?

secret-life-of-pets-slideIt seems The Secret Life of Pets almost wants to be for our pets what Toy Story was for kids playthings, exploring what happens when no one is looking. However, rather than Pixar, this new movie is from the team behind Despicable Me.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘For their fifth fully-animated feature-film collaboration, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures present The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day.

‘Comedy superstars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart make their animated feature-film debuts in The Secret Life of Pets, which co-stars Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks.

‘Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy produce the film directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2), co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Brian Lynch and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio.’

Trolls Teaser Trailer – Going from pencil toppers to their own animated movies

trolls-teaser-trailerFor many years, the fluffy-haired trolls were inexplicably popular as everything from keyrings to pencil toppers, despite the fact they were pretty ugly and had no discernible purpose. However that hasn’t stopped Dreamwords Animation deciding it would be worth making a movie based on them.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘DreamWorks’ TROLLS is a hair-raising comedy filled with unbelievable adventure and incredible music.  Known for their crazy, colourful, and magical hair, Trolls are the happiest, most joyous creatures ever to burst into song. But their world of rainbows and cupcakes is changed forever, when their leader Poppy (Anna Kendrick,) must embark on a rescue mission that takes her far beyond the only world she’s ever known.’

#Adulting Episode 1 – Hunting Season’s Ben Baur deals with growing up in the new gay-themed web series

adulting-episode-1Ben Baur got plenty of fans thanks to starring in the likes of the popular web series Hunting Season, and he’s also an OUT 100 Honoree. Now though he’s teamed up with friend Thandi Tolmay to co-create an new comedic series, #Adulting, which has just released it first episode.

The synopsis says the show, ‘follows two best friends Max and Faye as they navigate life and love, all while staring down the barrel of ‘30’. Cheating boyfriends, rapidly slowing metabolisms and empty bank accounts are only the beginning.’ However, while the title suggests this is about people being adults, the first episode shows these two aren’t completely grown up, especially after they start talking about what would happen if Max was straight.

Baur comments, “We came up with the idea for #Adulting because we wanted to tell stories that were tragically relatable to this really odd time in life, when you’re supposed to be a grown-­up  and you’re just… not.”

As well as Baur and Tolmay, also involved is is director by TJ Marchbank (Buzzfeed Motion Pictures). The three have been friends for going on 10 years after meeting at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where they all graduated together.

The Angry Birds Movie Trailer – Jason Sudeikis takes on the furious avians

Angry-Birds-Movie-pic1-slideAlthough videogame to movie adaptations don’t have a great track record in Hollywood, you’d think Sony would be on to a sure thing with the insanely popular smartphone game Angry Birds. It may not have a strong plot, but the game is full of characters that should work well on the big screen.

Now the trailer is here, which you can see below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.’

Spotlight (Cinema Review)

For many, All the President’s Men is the ultimate 70s paranoia movie, the film which inspired a generation of investigative journalists. Now, all these years later, comes a film which in every way is its equal. Spotlight is angry, unbearably tense, brilliantly written and performed, and of course based on a real life scandal, arguably one of the biggest scandals to hit America since the 1970s.

The newsroom in question is the Boston Globe, specifically its special investigations section called Spotlight. Its leader is Michael Keaton, who immediately comes under pressure to deliver a story by new editor Live Schreiber, a peculiar, possibly autistic man but one who is thorough in his job and sees potential in a story about a child abuse case. Keaton agrees to pursue the story with his crack team, including the driven Mark Ruffalo and the sensitive Rachel McAdams. They slowly reveal several cases of abuse of children in the 1970s by Catholic priests, and try to get the victims, now very fragile adults, to reveal their stories. [Read more…]
