Win The Drag Documentary Dressed As A Girl On DVD!

December 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dressed-As-A-Girl-DVDThe gay-themed drag documentary Dressed As A Girl is released on DVD in the UK from November 23rd courtesy of Peccadillo Pictures, and we’ve teamed up with them to give away three copies of the movie in this competition!

London’s alternative East End drag phenomenon gets its moment in this fabulous account of six years in the lives of its most celebrated performers. See Jonny Woo, John Sizzle, Holestar, Scottee, Amber, Pia and Ma Butcher dazzle, surprise and outrage audiences with their antics on-stage and behind the scenes.

There is enough eye make-up and sequins on display to sink a battleship, but at the heart of this surprisingly intimate portrait is the dark side of their lives. The relentless quest for glamorous originality often comes at a personal cost.

The film is both a record of a fascinating style of hyper-costumed performance and an insight into the fragile personal lives of these artists. This is truly the frockumentary of the year.

Win The Acclaimed Documentary Do I Sound Gay? On DVD

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

do-i-sound-gay-uk-dvd-coverFunded in part by a Kickstarter campaign, this American documentary was first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award for Best Documentary at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Selected as the Closing Night Film at the Scottish Queer International Film Festival, SPECTRUM is pleased to announce the UK release of the fascinating documentary about finding your true voice, DO I SOUND GAY?, available digitally and on DVD from 7th December 2015. To celebrate the release, we have three copies of the DVD to give away!

Determined to confront his anxiety about “sounding gay”, journalist David Thorpe embarks on a hilarious and touching journey, exploring the linguistic, cultural and historical origins of the stereotype of the gay voice.

Enlisting the frank and often funny perspectives of famous faces including writer David Sedaris, author, journalist and activist for the LGBT community Dan Savage, comedian Margaret Cho, actor George Takei and fashion guru Tim Gunn as well as family, friends, and even complete strangers, David learns that people – gay, straight and everything in between – often wish for a different voice.

Drawing upon movie and television clips, acting coaches and linguists, Do I Sound Gay? uncovers the broader context of this widely-felt insecurity and illuminates the complexities at play in a highly personal and current issue.

DO I SOUND GAY? is available digitally and on DVD 7th DECEMBER

Gay Short Film Showcase: Beyond Plain Sight – The darkest of secrets take place behind closed doors

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beyond-plain-sight-slideBeyond Plain Sight has done pretty well for itself, screening at festivals around the world, winning Best British Short Film at Raindance and Best International Short Film at AFRIFF. Now the short is available online and you can take a look at its unnerving secrets below.

It all starts out so seemingly nicely – a man is caring for an apparently disabled woman who needs feeding, and then heads out onto the streets of London. It feels like he’s lonely and in need of connection. However, when he returns home, we discover he has some extremely dark and disturbing secrets, and that when he was looking at a poster of a missing man earlier, it wasn’t just innocent interest.

However, no matter how sinister things are in private, it doesn’t seem to affect the rest of his life.

It is a pretty unnerving short, partly because the camera seems so neutral about what it’s showing you, to the point it sometimes feels like it’s taking you into the head of someone you might not want to be so close too. Take a look at it below.

Pot Luck: Episode 1 – New Zealand gets its first lesbian-themed web series and it needs your help

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

pot-luck-slideVarious lesbian-themed web series have been made, but until now New Zealand hasn’t had one of its own. That’s changing though with Pot Luck, which has released its first episode and launched a crowdfunding campaign so that they can finish the season.

The show ‘is a fresh, fun, and sexy narrative web-series that explores the lives of three Wellington friends when they make a pact which turns their weekly Pot Luck dinners into a search for love. Or not.’

Ness Simons, the writer and director, is a graduate of the NZ Film School and Whitirea’s Creative Writing Programme. The series was inspired by many enjoyable nights Ness has had sharing pot luck dinners with her friends, and she says “there’s so much scope for story when you bring a group of women together, so it seemed like a good idea to build a series around friendship and food and the different dynamics around the table”.

Set in Wellington, the storyline revolves around the friendship of Mel, Debs and Beth. Mel, played by Nikki Si’ulepa, is charismatic, free and easy. Her mate Debs (Anji Kreft), is a shy butch whose heart was broken six years ago, so there’s a softer, complex side to this staunch woman. Beth, (Tess Jamieson-Karaha), is the third part of the trio, she’s also Mel’s ex-girlfriend. The weekly dinner format allows for a range of guest characters, and Beth’s mother Eileen (Kate Ward) will also make a regular appearance.

Episode One (“The Pact”) was funded by the Emerging Artists Trust (http://www.eatwellington.org.nz/) which Ness says has been “a huge vote of support and really helpful in getting the momentum for the series underway”. However, to get more more the the Pot Luck team is looking for further funding to complete the series, including running a crowd funding campaign on the Arts Foundation website, Boosted, which runs until the 17th December.

Take a look at Episode 1 below, and then head over to Boosted or the show’s website if you want to see more. [Read more…]

Take A Look At A Cover Version Of Adele’s Hello Featuring Harry Potter, James Bond & More

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

adeleInternet videos where clips from politicans speak have been cut and edited together so they’re saying the lyrics of songs are pretty popular online, but wouldn’t it be better if Harry Potter, 007, C-3PO, Big Bird, Bruce Lee and loads more were singing Adele’s Hello?

Well, now they are, thanks to the video you can watch below, where Matthijs Vlot has edited together clips from all manner of movies to create a different sort of cover version.

Somehow I doubt the cover will become the sort of chart-busting success of Adele’s latest offerings, but it’ still a lot of fun, so take a look below and say hello from the other side.

It’s certainly a lot better than most people trying to sing karaoke versions of Adele’s songs.

The Nice Guys Trailer – Ryan Gosling & Russell Crowe don’t want to get shot by Matt Bomer

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nice-guys-poster1-slideShane Black had a huge hit with Iron Man 3, but the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer/director is returning to the world of neo-noir with a dash of humour, with The Nice Guys. He’s lined up a great cast, including Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, Matt Bomer, Kim Basinger and Margaret Qualley.

A red band trailer is now here, which certainly makes it look like the film might be fun.

The film is about muscle-for-hire Jackson Healy (Crowe), a recovering alcoholic, and private detective Holland March (Gosling), a current alcoholic, who are brought together by the apparent suicide of a porn star. However the dead woman’s aunt (Basinger) claims that she saw her niece alive and well after she was supposed to have killed herself. Healy takes on the case hoping to make some easy money, but soon both men are dragged into a far-reaching conspiracy that is rooted in smog and the car industry.

And as you’ll see in the promo below, also seems to involve Matt Bomer really, really wanting to shoot them.

The Nice Guys will be in cinemas next summer.

Exposed Trailer – Keanu Reeves looks for the truth about his partner’s death

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

exposed-keanu-reevesDid John Wick mark the start of a bit of a Keanu Reeves renaissance? He’ll probably be hoping so as his star power has gone off the boil a little since the days of The Matrix. One of his next films is Exposed, which sees him getting a little hard-boiled, although the actual movie has more of a supernatural side than the trailer suggests, with one of the characters experiencing visions.

The brief synopsis read: ‘When a detective starts to investigate his partner’s shocking death, he uncovers disturbing evidence of police corruption and a dangerous secret involving an unlikely young woman.’

The young woman is played by Ana de Armas (Knock Knock), whose character has apparently witnessed a miracle.

And while John Wick was directed by Reeves former stunt double, Exposed is the first movie from a former personal trainer to the stars, Gee Malik Linton, so Keanu certainly seems keen to work with people others might not give a chance to at the moment.

Take a look at the trailer below.

Barbra Streisand Plans To Direct A Catherine The Great Biopic

December 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

barbra-streisandWe probably shouldn’t assume this really will happen yet, as since her last directorial foray, 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces, has been attached to helm all manner of never made movies, but THR reports that the legendary star is set to direct a biopic of Russia’s Catherine The Great.

There’s no news on whether she also plans to star, but as she’s appeared in all her directorial outings, there’s a good chance.

However she won’t be playing the central role, as it’s said the movie focuses on a ‘young, sensual Catherine trapped in an abusive marriage with the heir to the Russian throne. But, when her inept husband proves incapable of ruling, she utilizes her intelligence, fortitude and passion to rise to power.’

It is often said that it was under her reign, which lasted from 1762 to 1796, that Russia grew to be considered for the first time as one of the truly great powers of Europe.

At the moment it’s not clear when we might see the film, although it’s said casting is already underway.

Gay Short FIlm Showcase: When AIDS Was Funny – New doc exposes Reagan’s staff joking about gay men’s deaths

December 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ronald-reaganIt is part of the know lore of the early days of AIDS that US President Ronald Reagan dragged his feet horrifically, not mentioning the disease until over 5,000 American citizens died, and waiting until four times as many were dead before making a speech about the health emergency.

However, if you’ve ever wondered why that was or the true contempt the Reagan White House held those suffering from the disease – largely because at the time it mainly effected gay men – a short new documentary released via the Vanity Fair website shows just how little they cared, with staff joking about people dying of AIDS.

The words come from White House Deputy Press Secretary Larry Speakes in previously unremarked on audio from press conferences, where he seems to think the fact it’s happening to gay men makes they tragic death humourous.

Take a look below.
