New The Danish Girl Trailer – Eddie Redmayne is transgender pioneer Lili Elbe

October 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eddie-Redmayne-Danish-Girl-slideIn The Danish Girl, Eddie Redmayne stars as Lili Elbe, who became one of the first women to undergo sex-reassignment surgery way back in the early 1930s.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Based on the book by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [The Theory of Everything] and Alicia Vikander [Ex Machina]), and directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.’

That doesn’t give a lot of detail, but at film will chart the journey of the person who started out asDanish painter Einar Wegener (Redmayne), and his wife, Gerda. In 1931 Einar is thought to have become the first person in the world to have a sex-change operation, when she became Lili. It’s believed the journey started – at least openly – after Gerda asked Einar to stand in for a female subject that Gerda was supposed to paint. The painting became incredibly popular and Lili began to express who she truly was.

The movie will hit UK cinemas on New Year’s Day 2016, which will ensure it’s ripe for a major awards run. [Read more…]

New Kill Your Friends Trailer – Nicholas Hoult takes the music business to murderous levels

October 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-friends-poster2-slide-nicholas-houltNicholas Hoult leaves zombies, mutants and Mad Max behind for a while to head into the music business with the upcoming Kill Your Friends, which has release a new trailer and a sexy new poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When the road to success is littered with losers and even your closest colleagues are desperate for you to fail, what would you do to make it to the top?

‘London, 1997; the British music industry is on a winning streak. Britpop bands Blur, Oasis, Radiohead rule the airwaves and Cool Britannia is in full swing. 27-year-old hit chasing A&R man Steven Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult) is slashing and burning his way through the music business, a world where ‘no one knows anything’ and where careers are made and broken by chance and the fickle tastes of the general public – “Yeah, those animals”.

‘Fuelled by greed, ambition and inhuman quantities of drugs, Stelfox searches for his next hit record amid a relentless orgy of self-gratification. Created by an industry that demands success at any price, as the hits dry up and the industry begins to change, Stelfox takes the concept of ‘killer tunes’ to a murderous new level in a desperate attempt to salvage his career.

‘Kill Your Friends is a dark, satirical and hysterically funny evisceration of the Nineties music business. A time and place populated by frauds, charlatans and bluffers; where ambition is a higher currency than talent, and where it seems anything can be achieved – as long as you want it badly enough.’

Kill Your Friends will be in UK cinemas on November 6th. [Read more…]

Ratchet & Clank Trailer – The videogame turns into an animated movie

October 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rachet-and-clank-poster-slideTurning videogames into movies doesn’t exactly have a great history, but when it’s an animated movie, there’s a chance it’ll be okay – although that fact it’s an independent production should give us a little pause.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A CG-animated movie based on the iconic PlayStation video game. Two unlikely heroes struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.’

The film will be in cinemas early next year. [Read more…]

New Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension Trailer – The found footage creepiness is back

October 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paranormal-activity-ghost-dimension-poster-slideThe Paranormal Activity franchise is returning with what’s promised as the final instalment (for now at least), which suggestions it’ll clear up some of the mysteries from the earlier movies.

Here’s the very brief synopsis: ‘For the first time, see the unseen in Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension – the horrifying conclusion to the Paranormal Activity films.’

Producer Jason Blumhouse has added, ‘It’s coming to an end. This is it, the finale. We’re saying it before the movie opens. We’re not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground, this will keep Paranormal Activity as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way… All the questions that everyone has asked from the past Paranormal Activity films: What does Toby look like? What’s the backstory to the families? These questions have been teased out. Now they will be answered.’

The film’s in cinemas on October 21st. [Read more…]

Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk Is Set To Return For Thor: Ragnarok

October 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-hulk-bannerWhile Marvel still seems reticent to give Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk a movie of his own, they are at least making a little more use of him, as after the two Avengers movies, he’s now due to show up in Thor: Ragnarok, according to Variety.

It’s not certain how he’ll fit into the movie, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Hemsworth’s Thor calls on The Hulk’s help, as if you’ve taking something powerful, he’s a handy (green) person to have around. However Variety does add that ‘the film will take place somewhere other than Earth and Asgard’, which suggests we’ll get to see more on the nine realms.

Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander are also set to return (with Hiddleston suggesting this may be his last outing as Loki), with Taika Waititi. Shooting will lick off next year for release in 2017.

Die Hard Prequel in the Works, With Director Len Wiseman Set to Return

October 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

die-hard-slideWhile 2013’s A Good Day To Die Hard was a bit of a flop, Fox obviously thinks there’s still mileage in the franchise, as they’ve enlisted Die Hard 4 director Len Wiseman for a prequel, taking us into the life of a young John McLane.

Bruce Willis is likely to return though, as if he likes the script he’ll pop up as the famed action here, with the rest of the movie taking place in flashback.

Deadline reports that the movie largely takes place ‘in 1979, when McClane was a cop in gritty New York City and showing how he became a die hard kind of guy.’

Wiseman will now help develop the movie alongside an as yet unhired screenwriter, with the hope it’ll be in cinemas in 2017.

Jason & Shirley (US Cinema Review)

October 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sarah Schulman, Jack Waters, Eamon Fahey, Orran Farmer
Director: Stephen Winter
Running Time: 79 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: October 10th 2015 (US)

I think it’s fair to say that a small, slightly experimental art film all about the making of another film that not many people have seen, is never going to find a huge audience, however for a very niche crowd there’s enough to keep their interest piqued – even if they probably won’t exactly like the film at the end.

The movie is a fictionalised recreation of the making of Shirley Clarke’s influential 1967 documentary, Portrait Of Jason, a movie which is extremely well-regarded in academic film circles, although not widely known outside that (partly due to it being difficult to find until a recent restoration). The original documentary was made over a single 12-hour period in Clarke’s apartment, where she interviewed gay, African-American hustler Jason Holliday, where he talks about himself and his life. As he gets more stoned and drunk, his happy, polished veneer begins to crack to reveal a darker, sadder life underneath. [Read more…]

Iris Prize LGBT Film Festival Announces Its 2015 Winners, Led By Transgender Short, Vessels

October 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

vessels-iris-prizeVessels, by US filmmaker Arkasha Stevenson, about Diamond, a young transgender woman working at a garment factory for little pay, has been announced winner of the 2015 Iris Prize – Cardiff’s International LGBT Short Film Prize supported by The Michael Bishop Foundation. The £30,000 prize will allow Arkasha to make a new short film in the UK.

At the sold out Iris Awards presented by Amy Lamé at Cardiff’s Cineworld and Park Inn Hotel, Lord Glendonbrook announced that the international jury had selected Arkasha Stevenson from the USA to scoop the coveted award.

Lynn Hunter, Chair of the Iris Prize Jury said, “Iris’ 2015 theme was ‘Watch Films, Party Nightly, Repeat and this was nowhere more evident than on the screen.  The standard of films this year was exceptionally high, covering a rich diversity of genres and themes, and this made for some very robust jury discussions.

We had a very interesting, lively and difficult time trying to decide on this year’s Iris Prize winner. We saw many extraordinary films that made us laugh, cry and certainly think. Choosing one from all the wonderful films was extremely difficult but in the end we all agreed that Vessels is a strong, unique and purposeful vision. It evoked issues around equality and exploitation, and transgender and women’s voices are voices we need to be championing right now. With a strong and emotional voice, it tackled some difficult issues in an honest, visceral and graphic way”.

Two other short films reached the final stage of the competition with high commendations. They were:

Hole directed by Martin Edralin from Canada
“Engaging and thought provoking with the opening shot of any of the films we saw. This is bold and challenging filmmaking”.

In The Hollow directed by Austin Bunn from the USA
“A very moving, brave and under-represented story. A great hybrid approach to drama and documentary”.

Addressing the audience during the closing night screening of the winning films, Berwyn Rowlands said:
“I’m thrilled that Arkasha is this year’s winner of the Iris Prize. This is only the second time the Iris Prize has been presented to a woman, the first being Dee Rees during our inaugural festival in 2007. We are already looking forward to meeting Arkasha to discuss her new Iris Prize short!”

And the other winners are:
Best British Short sponsored by Pinewood Studios Group
Closets, directed by Lloyd Eyre-Morgan, was announced as Best British Short. Craig Ford representing the Best British Jury said: “Closets is a clever, original concept. Time travel, teen issues, great performances”.

“This film successfully engaged with its target audience of young people, but at the same told its story in a way that appeals to a much wider and older audience, which is often the benchmark of excellent filmmaking. It also tactfully highlights the similarities and differences between growing up gay in the 1980s and the present”.

Prior to presenting the Best British Award to Lloyd, Andrew Smith, Director of Strategy and Communications at Pinewood Studios Group, delighted the audience when he confirmed that they would continue sponsoring the Best British prize in 2016 but would also increase their sponsorship from £14,000 to £20,000.

Also highly commended were:
Mirrors by Neil Ely
“Well directed, well improvised, great use of space. A raw, honest film”.

Roxanne by Paul Frankl
“A fresh, non-stereotypical positive spin on a transgender character”.

Iris Prize Best British Feature sponsored by Martin Briggs
Fourth Man Out directed by Andrew Nackman is the winner of the Iris Prize Best Feature Award.

Jury chairman Martin Briggs said: “We’ve run a marathon of 14 feature films, taking road trips across Argentina and Australia. We’ve walked the streets of New York, floated over lakes, looped the loop, sucked toes with Larry Clark and got down with the scrum and the junkies.

“Fourth Man Out was a standout performance, directed to engage a contemporary audience with sensibility and wit. A fantastic piece of ensemble acting from the central characters with memorable supporting roles. We felt this was a gay film for a mainstream audience”.

Also highly commended were Josh Kim’s How to Win at Checkers (Every Time) and Joey Kuhn’s Those People.

Performance Awards sponsored by Gay Star News
The performance awards sponsored by Gay Star News were presented to Davide Capone for his role as Davide in Darker Than Midnight, and Sigrid ten Napel, who played Anna in Summer (Zomer).

Presenting the Award Tris Reid-Smith said, “This has been a breakthrough year for features at Iris and our deliberations were tough but the performances we chose represent  the best of LGBTQ cinema – challenging, heart-warming and true”.

The ensemble cast of Fourth Man Out were highly commended too.

Finally, the Iris Prize Youth Award was presented to Closets, directed by Lloyd Eyre-Morgan from the UK. Two representatives of the Youth Jury of 100 pupils from 6 secondary schools in Wales said, delighted the audience when they initially forgot the name of their favourite winning film!

They eventually commented: “This film is really useful as a teaching aid because it talks to young people directly. It confirms that whilst things have changed for the better, there are still underlying issues to address, for example homophobic language and bullying.”
