The Jungle Book Teaser Trailer – First impressive look at Disney’s live-action take on Kipling’s tales

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Jungle-Book-2016-slideIf you’re going to mess with a classic like The Jungle Book, you’d better set out to impress and that seems exactly what Disney is trying to do with the first trailer for next year’s live-action take on Rudyard Kipling’s stories.

It focuses on some very impressive looking special effects and action, suggesting this will be one to look out for it’s released April 2016.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Jon Favreau (“Chef,” “Iron Man,” “Elf”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johannsson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world.’ [Read more…]

New Creed Trailer – The Rocky Saga gets a fresh start with Michael B. Jordan

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

creed-new-slideThe Rocky films are going in a new direction that could potentially spin-off into a franchise of its own with Creed, which follow he son of the famed Apollo Creed, who ends being coached by Rocky Balboa himself.

To give us a fresh taste, a new trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

‘Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

‘With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title… but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?’

Disney Planning New Mary Poppins Movie With Rob Marshall Directing

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mary-poppins-1964Only a couple of years after making a movie all about how Mary Poppins author PL Travers didn’t like the idea of making a Mary Poppins movie and tried to control the process to ensure it didn’t go too Hollywood, Disney has decided to see what the sound of Travers spinning in her grave would be like, by announcing they’re working on a new, original Poppins movie.

Into The Woods and Chicago director Rob Marshall will help develop and helm the new live-action musical, which EW reports will be set in Depression-era London. And while the 1960s movie was mainly based in the first of Travers’ books, the new movie ‘will explore Mary’s further adventures with the Banks family and beyond as illustrated by Travers’ seven additional novels.’

Disney is keen to stress that this shouldn’t be seen as a sequel, instead being a completely new take of the characters. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) will write the songs, and the film apparently has the support of original Mary Poppins co-composer, Richard Sherman.

Disney also has the blessing of the Travers estate, who obviously aren’t a controlling as the author herself.

Darren Aronofsky May Take On Channing Tatum’s Evel Knievel Biopic

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

darren-aronofskyFor quite a while (at least since July 2012) Channing Tatum has been putting together a biopic of daredevil Evel Knievel. Now he may have found a director for the film, as Deadline reports that Noah and Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky is circling the film.

He hasn’t signed on yet, and knowing the idiosyncratic director, he may want to mold it a little more in a direction that suits him before he officially decides to helm.

Evel was born Robert Craig Knievel, the stuntman became a household name in the 1970s for his nationally televised motorcycle jumps. Ever the showman, Knievel became recognizable for his use of a Stars-and-Stripes getup and the fact he broke 433 bones. He died in 2007 at the age of 69.

He became a legend to those growing up in the 70s and 80s, which perhaps explains both Channing and Darren’s interest.

Woody Harrelson Joins War of the Planet of the Apes

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

woody-harrelsonBefore they came out, many thought the idea of rebooting the Planet Of The Apes franchise with a series of prequels was a bad idea. However both Rise and Dawn turned out to be great films and big successes at the box office.

Now a third is on its way, in the form of War Of The Planet Of The Apes, which has just recruited Woody Harrelson to be its human villain, according to THR.

Not a huge amount is known about the plot, although it is known that Matt Reeves will return to direct, Andy Serkis will once more be ape leader Caesar, and Gabriel Chavarria will be one of two human leads.

Of the new film, Reeves has previously said, “As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of DAWN. That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with. Where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of it. The things that happen in that story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply. It’s going to be an epic story. I think you’ve probably read that I sort of described it where in the first film was very much about his rise from humble beginnings to being a revolutionary. The second movie was about having to rise to the challenge of being a great leader in the most difficult of times. This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses.”

It’s due out July 2017.

Gay-Themed Film From Afar Wins The Venice Film Festival’s Top Prize, The Golden Lion

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

desde-alla-from-afarThe Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion award is one of the most prestigious gongs in the movie world, ranked alongside the likes of the Cannes Palm d’Or and Berlin’s Golden Bear. This year’s Golden Lion has now been given out, and the 2015 prize was handed to the gay-themed film, From Afar (aka Desde Allá), from Venezuelan filmmaker Lorenzo Vigas.

The movie follows Armando, a 50-year-old man, who seeks out younger men in Caracas and pays them just for company. One day he meets Elder, a 17-year-old boy who is also the leader of a criminal gang. It begins a slow-blossoming, and potentially dangerous, romance between the two, set against the backdrop of the economic and social crisis that’s rocked Venezuela, and the violence that has stemmed from that.

Vigas commented on the festival stage, “I want to dedicate this prize to my amazing country, Venezuela. I know we have a few problems, but if we talk about them we will overcome them.”

It’s a particularly impressive achievement for Vigas, as this is his first feature-film, and it is also the first time the Golden Lion has gone to a film from Latin America.

Brokeback Mountain Is Headed To The London West End Stage

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brokeback-mountainAt the end of last year Brokeback Mountain writer Annie Proulx surprised many when she said of her short story, “I wish I’d never written the story. It’s just been the cause of hassle and problems and irritation since the film came out.”

Her problem was that since the film came out, people haven’t responded to the story the way she would like, as they would prefer if it had a happy ending. “So they rewrite the story, including all kinds of boyfriends and new lovers and so forth after Jack is killed,” she said.” And it just drives me wild. They can’t understand that the story isn’t about Jack and Ennis. It’s about homophobia; it’s about a social situation; it’s about a place and a particular mindset and morality. They just don’t get it… The implication is that because they’re men they understand much better than I how these people would have behaved. And maybe they do. But that’s not the story I wrote. Those are not their characters. The characters belong to me by law.”

However despite her rather crotchety attitude it hasn’t stopped her cashing in, making a mint from the movie, turning Brokeback Mountain into an opera, and now she’s sold the stage rights to producer Tom O’Connell, who intends to turn it into a play due to be staged next year in London’s West End. At the moment, it’s not clear who will write the play (Proulx herself wrote the book for the opera, but it doesn’t appear she’ll be involved in that capacity here).

Playbill prints statement from Annie, saying, “I am looking forward with sharp anticipation to the stage interpretation of the star-crossed lovers of Brokeback Mountain who moved from the page to the screen and now, under the skilled hand of producer Tom O’Connell and the sensibilities of the company, to the stage —a strange journey for two messed-up wannabe cow-hands from Wyoming. The actors who pull on their scuffed-up boots will step into a difficult time in a hard place.”

There’s no specific date given as to when it will hit the London stage, or what theatre it will be at. You can follow the show’s progress at brokebackplay.com. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy Shuts Down Journo Asking Vague Questions About His ‘Ambiguous’ Sexuality

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hardy-legendTom Hardy says he doesn’t mind celebrities talking about their sexuality, but if you’re going to ask him about his, you’d better have a damn good question. He showed that in a recent interview where he expertly and rather smartly shut down a journalist asking roundabout questions linking the bisexual character Tom plays in the Kray twins biopic to the star’s own sexuality.

The journalist was fishing around the fact that a few years ago in an interview with Attitude, Hardy talked about the fact he’s previously messed around with guys, saying “I’m an actor for fuck’s sake. I’ve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I’m in my thirties, it doesn’t do it for me.”

The new, slightly tetchy confrontation happened at the Toronto International Film Festival, when Graeme Coleman from Canadian LGBT-outlet Daily Xtra asked, “In the film, your character Ronnie is very open. But given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”

“What on earth are you on about?” Tom responds – which is fair enough, as he hasn’t exactly hidden his past, unless you think there’s something more he’s hiding.

“I was referring to an interview given to Attitude magazine a few years ago,” Coleman responds.

Tom isn’t having any of it though, saying, “But what is your question?”

A slightly flusters Coleman then says, “I was wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality.”

“I don’t find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality,” Hardy answers, before adding “Um, are you asking me about my sexuality?”

“Um…sure,” says Coleman.

“Why?”, Hardy wants know.

Coleman can only come up with an inarticulate, ‘Um’, so Tom says a very final, “Thank you,” and moves things on.

You can take a look at the incident below. [Read more…]

Hardcore Trailer – Violent action movies go completely first-person

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hardcore-trailer-slideNormally when a movie tries to make out it’s a once in a generation event, it’s an indication that the film itself will be a bit underwhelming. At least Hardcore genuinely is something a little bit different. Actually forget that, it’s not that different for videogame fans, as this is an entire movie show from a first-person perspective, with visuals that look like they’ve dropped out of an extremely violent game.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry and congratulations, you’re now a cyborg. 5 minutes later, your wife has been kidnapped and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky), he’s just a psychotic megalomaniac with telekinetic powers, and a never-ending army of mercenaries. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, Russia and everyone wants you dead. Everyone, except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He might be on your side. Good luck Henry. You’re very much likely to need it…’

The movie looks completely nuts and if you’re squeamish about violence then don’t press play below, but otherwise take a look and see what you thing. [Read more…]
