Anne Hathaway Wants To Get In The Shower For An Alien Invasion Comedy

August 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anne-hathawayAnne Hathaway is putting on her producer’s hat and she’s also planning to star in The Shower. While I’m sure there are many people who very much like the idea of Anna Hathaway in the shower, this refers to meteor and baby showers rather than anything to do with water.

THR reports that, ‘The story begins with a bright baby shower when the guests find themselves under darker skies: a meteor shower. These meteors, however, turn men into blood-hungry aliens and the women must fight to not only save themselves but also the world.’

Jac Schaeffer wrote the script, which made last year’s Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. No director is attached, but they’re hoping to get one soon before taking the project to the studios.

First Look At Michael Fassbender In Character For Assassin’s Creed

August 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

assassins-creed-first-lookI’d almost forgotten the videogame series Assassin’s Creed was getting a movie, partly because it’s been in the works for so far. However, while game to movies have a bad reputation, you have to hope that the presence of Michael Fassbender might raise this one above the rest. It also appears they’re trying to make the film it’s own animal, as Fassbender will play a character created specifically for the movie.

He’s certainly looking good in the central role, as shown in this first promo image (which debuted on Yahoo!), which echoes the game covers while simultaneously looking suitably historical.

Alongside the image comes a synopsis: ‘[Callum] Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.’

The movie will reunite director Justin Kurzel with his Macbeth stars Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, with Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed also set to star.

Big Eden Trailer – The much-loved gay-themed movie is getting a 15th Anniversary re-release

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

big-eden-slideBack in 2000, Big Eden won various awards at LGBT film festivals and also got a lot of fans outside the festival circuit.

Indeed it’s remained so popular that in October Wolfe video is giving it a re-released and a Blu-ray upgrade in the US. To mark that upcoming 15th Anniversary Edition, the trailer below has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘This funny, heart-warming romantic drama charmed critics nationwide with its truly original tale of a thirty-something gay guy, Henry Hart, who returns to his childhood Montana home to confront his unrequited passion for his high school best friend.

‘Favorite stars you’ll enjoy seeing include: Arye Gross (Castle), Tim DeKay (White Collar), Oscar™ Award winner Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Eric Schweig (The Last of the Mohicans).’ [Read more…]

Gay Rugby World Cup Documentary Scrum To Open Iris Prize LGBT Film Festival

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

scrum-iris-slideA couple of weeks ago Cardiff’s Iris Prize festival announced the line-up that will be competing for its main LGBT Short Film award this year, along with those hoping to be named Best British Short. However, alongside the fest’s impressive showcase for gay-themed short film – for which it is justly acclaimed – it will be screening 14 features.

They’ve announced their opening movie, and it’s very apt considering it will be screening during the Rugby World Cup, only a short distance from the Millennium Stadium where many of the most important matches will take place (incidentally, the Welsh Rugby Union also allowed the festival to film their cinema advert at the stadium).

The film is a documentary called Scrum, which focuses on the 2014 gay rugby world cup – The Bingham Cup. Aussie director Poppy Stockell will head to Cardiff for the screening on October 7th (with the fest running until October 11th).

She says, “I’m thrilled that Scrum has been selected to open the 2015 Iris Prize Festival. Wales is known throughout the world as a rugby loving nation and I just can’t wait to see what they think of the film. Gareth Thomas has already made a huge contribution as the first openly gay rugby union player. Coupled with the pioneering work of out gay ref Nigel Owen, you get the impression Wales is a progressive country.

“If this was not enough we also have the added thrill of screening during the Rugby World Cup – I’m obsessed with hearing the Welsh crowds sing and hoping to get a chance to see some games, especially the Ireland v France match on the closing night of the Iris Festival.”

The full feature programme includes the Award winning Fourth Man Out (US – director Andrew Nackman will be attending the screening); lesbian comedy Floating (Germany – director Julia Kaiser is also scheduled to be in Cardiff for the festival), and Darker Than Midnight (Italy – whose director Sebastiano Riso is also visiting Iris to introduce his film).

“I honestly believe we have this year the best of the best. Many of the films in this year’s programme arrive in Cardiff with awards for best film, best performance from festivals all over the world. One of them will leave Cardiff with the Iris Prize Best Feature Award and two awards for performances in a feature will also be distributed. I think the juries have a difficult task ahead of them,” said festival Director and feature film programmer Berwyn Rowlands.

Gay Filmmaker Seeks Funding To Complete His Cross-Country LGBT Documentary, The Road Less Traveled By

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-road-less-traveled-by-slideThings didn’t work out quite as planned for the documentary, The Road Less Traveled By. The idea was that  ‘A.J. Goodrich – a poet and filmmaker in Los Angeles – was going to walk across the country to get married to his boyfriend in New York, documenting the journey on film and talking to people along the way about gay marriage and queer identity in America.’

However fate intervened and before they left the couple split up. Goodrich decided to head off on the journey anyway, with various friends helping out along the way. Now he’s hoping to finish the film that documents the trip, and he’s turned to IndieGoGo in the hope of raising $35,000.

Goodrich’s journey saw him, ‘Covering 3,600 miles over the course of eight months, the crew trekked over mountains and deserts, through Las Vegas and Native American reservations in New Mexico, across the wide expanse of Texas, through fires and floods, past the devastated Gulf of Mexico, up through the deep South to D.C., finally ending in New York City where the story began.

‘Over the course of they journey, they encountered all sorts of people, and a range of rarely seen perspectives, from an Islamic gravedigger in the middle of the Mojave Desert to a roadhouse cook in Arizona and stewards of a radical queer commune in New Mexico. Each day held a unique new adventure and incredible people to meet, share stories with, and interview.

‘What started as a grassroots civil rights march exploring equality and LGBT identity grew into a deeply personal coming-of-age story, and an unexpected look into the true nature of love, friendship — and what’s really important in life.’

The walk was completed in 2011, but it’s taken until now to get it to the point where it needs completion funding for the likes of sound, colour-correction, licensing and music, which the crowdfunding campaign can help with.

Take a look at the fundraising video below, and head over to Indiegogo if you want to help. [Read more…]

Oriented Trailer – Looking into the lives of gay Palestinians in Tel Aviv

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oriented-slideIt’s not always easy being a Palestinian, and that’s certainly true for gay Palestinians, who have to survive within a culture that is often very hostile to them (indeed, there have been reports of Israeli security forcing trying to turn gay Palestinians into spies by threatening to out them if they don’t work for them – something that could cost them their lives). However, it’s certainly not all misery and angst for them.

The documentary Oriented looks into this, ‘following the lives of three gay Palestinian friends in Tel Aviv confronting their national and sexual identity.’

The film has screened as Sheffield Doc/Fest and the Los Angeles Film Festival, receiving great acclaim. It’s the debut film from British filmmaker Jake Witzenfeld.

It’s a movie that attempts to show a different side to being gay and Arab, taking us into the lives of three men whose lives may be very different from what you expect.

As one of the documentary’s subjects, Abu Seif, told Variety. “I think a lot of people who saw the movie changed their minds about what it is to be a gay Arab and a gay Palestinian. To anyone who wants to listen, I am ready to explain. Get out from your bubble, and let the funky Arabs open your mind.”

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Pierce Brosnan Wouldn’t Mind A Gay James Bond, But Can’t See It Happening

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

pierce-brosnan-james-bondThere’s been a fair amount of talk over the years about whether there will ever be a black James Bond, but what about a gay one? Skyfall gave us a bit of mild man-on-man flirtation, but there was never any proper suggestion 007 would be LGBT on screen.

However there’s one man with a bit of Bond knowledge who wouldn’t mind a gay secret agent on screen, although he also can’t see it ever happening due to the way Hollywood works.

When asked about it by Details, former Bond, Pierce Brosnan, initially said, “Sure. Why not?.”

However, he added that, “Actually, I don’t know how it would work. I don’t think Barbara [Broccoli, the James Bond producer] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.”

Who knows though, maybe one day we’ll get a gay, black James Bond. Brosnan may not be able to see it happening, but we shouldn’t give up hope.

Robert Pattinson Up For Claire Denis’ New Sci-fi Project

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert-PattinsonSince The Twilight Saga ended, Robert Pattinson has seemed to steer away from mainstream projects – although he does have the period adventure The Lost City Of Z coming up. You’d think a sci-fi flick would be a shameless bid for box office dollars, but when it’s directed by Claire Denis (Beau Travail) from a script by White Teeth’s Zadie Smith and her husband Nick Laird, it suggests this may be something unusual.

ScreenDaily has the news that Pattinson will star in Denis’ ambitious English-language debut, although what we still don’t know are the exact details of the plot. What we are aware of though is that it takes ‘place beyond the solar system in a future that seems like the present’.

Beyond Pattinson, Denis is pulling together an interesting bunch of people to help put the film together, including ‘Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, known for his Tate Modern installation The Weather Project; astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, known for his work on black holes and cosmology; and Stuart Staples of indie band Tindersticks.’

The plan is to start shooting early next year.

Matt Damon Puts On His Spacesuit In A New The Martian Poster

August 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Martian-Launch-One-SheetHow would you like to be stranded on Mars? Doesn’t sound much fun, does it? Well, that’s what’s happening to Matt Damon in The Martian, which has debuted a new poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission.

‘As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.’

The movie is in UK cinemas September 30th.

Sand Dollars Trailer – Two women find love in the Dominican republic

August 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sand-dollars-slideSet amongst the luch scenery of the Dominican Republic, Sand Dollars sure looks like it’ll be pretty to look at. It also seems like the story will be worth a look – with a tale that contrasts the beauty of the country with the difficulties faced by some of the people there.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An older European woman becomes enchanted with a young Dominican woman who must struggle to make ends meet. Love brings a flow of entanglements in a drama which unfolds like palm trees in an irresistible storm.’

The movie is the fourth film from real-life couple Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas following Cochoni, Jean Gentil and Cumbres. Take a look at the trailer for Sand Dollars below. [Read more…]
