Ren (Alana Lake) is a British transplant living in Berlin. She’s single but doesn’t really want to be. Over the course of a year, we get to see her various attempts to get lucky and find connection. That ranges from dealing with someone who seems more interested in their Tinder match than her, as well as a one-night-stand who doesn’t seem able to eat any of the breakfast banquet she’s created. She also heads off to a bondage workshop and tries speed-dating, while a lost mobile phone on one date cause all manner of problems.

England Is Mine (DVD Review) – The early days of Morrissey gets a movie

December 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jack Lowden, Jessica Brown Findlay, Adam Lawrence, Jodie Comer, Simone Kirby
Director: Mark Gill
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 4th 2017 (UK)

To some, Morrissey is a figure who inspires devotion – the musician-poet of outsiders and of those wish the world were a different place. To others though, he’s a man who’s spent the past 35 years whining and becoming increasingly out of touch with life as lived by everyone else (not helped by the messianic adoration he still attracts from those who love him). He’d also probably be the last person to collaborate on a film biopic, so England Is Mine is very much unofficial, picking up Steven Patrick Morrissey’s life in the 70s, before anyone knew who he was. By concentrating on the time before he started collaborating with Johnny Marr, also helps the movie get around the fact that it would have been difficult, if not impossible, for them to get the rights to use any of The Smiths’ music. Permission Trailer – Rebecca Hall & Dan Stevens open up their relationship in the gay-themed film!

December 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it’s tough to imagine ever getting bored of sleeping with Dan Stevens, that’s kind of the premise of Permission. Or rather, it’s about a couple who begin to wonder if they’re missing out because they’re the only people either has ever been with.

While Stevens and Rebecca Hall have been together for a long time and are about to get engaged, her brother (David Joseph Craig), suggests maybe they should at least try other people so they know they other really is ‘the one’. That leads them to experiment with other people, and as you might expect, as bit of polyamory proves more complicated for their relationship than they expected.

Her brother meanwhile is considering whether his long-term relationship with his boyfriend is ready for them to become parents. As the new trailer shows, it’s a film looking at the complexities of all kinds of relationships, irrespective of what genders are involved.

The movie is due out in the States in February, take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Wentworth Miller & Russell Tovey Share A Superhero Kiss On Arrow-verse Crossover Event

November 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the weekend we posted the first images of Russell Tovey as the Arrow-verse’ first live-action, openly gay hero, The Ray. While many people were excited just to have Tovey show up for a major crossover event between The Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash and Legends Of Tomorrow, there was an extra treat in store.

One scene in ‘Crisis On Earth X’, saw Tovey and Wentworth Miller sharing a smooch! Miller has been part of the Arrow-verse for several years as villain turned reluctant hero Captain Cold (aka Leonard Snart). Tovey’s Ray though comes from an alternate universe in which the Nazis won the Second World War, and it turns out that in that world, a version of Snart, known there as Citizen Cold, is his lover.

The result is something it’s difficult to imagine ever happening even 10 years ago – two openly gay actors, playing superheroes on a major TV show, sharing a loving kiss! Take a look at a gif of the moment below.

The crossover event will air on Sky 1 in the UK next week. [Read more…]

Armie Hammer Reveals His Religious Mother Won’t Watch Him Playing Gay In Call Me By Your Name

November 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although things could change between now and March 4th, at the moment Armie Hammer is the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. However, one person who hasn’t – and probably won’t – watch him in his acclaimed role in Call Me By Your Name is his own mother.

In the movie, Hammer plays a post-graduate student who goes to Italy for the summer, and starts to fall in love with the teenage son of his professor.

Talking to Andy Cohen, he’s revealed of his mother, “I don’t think she’ll see the movie”.

His co-star Timotheee Chalamet then joked, “Because you’re possessed.”

Hammer continued, “Yeah, she does not want to see the movie. It goes against a lot of her very strong religious beliefs. She’s very conservative. It just affirmed to me that I’m going off on my own and doing what I truly believe I should be doing as an artist. It’s her right, it’s her choice. But I also have the right to support the movies I want to do. We’ve tried to talk it out, but we’re just at opposite ends of the spectrum on that one.”

It’s been quite a busy few days for Hammer and Call Me By Your Name. The movie scored the most nominations at the Indie Spirit Awards a few days ago, and yesterday pick up Best Picture from the Gotham Awards. Both those have been seen as good signs for a strong Oscar showing.

Hammer meanwhile deleted his Twitter account after getting angry about a negative Buzzfeed article about him. However, while he may have been frustrated about that article, he could at least take solace in the fact that Call Me By Your Name scored the best limited opening of 2017 when it arrived in US cinemas last weekend. Love, Simon Trailer – Mainstream Hollywood brings us a gay coming of age hero in the form of Nick Robinson

November 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In mainstream movies, the only films that get gay lead characters tend to be prestige dramas that are attempting to get Oscars. However, Love Simon is something a bit special, as it’s a teen coming of age movie that’s getting a release by 20th Century Fox (and was made under their Fox 2000 banner), and happens to be about a young gay man.

The first proper trailer for the movie has arrived, which comes from director Greg Berlanti (the man behind TV’s Arrow-verse).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.’

The film is due in cinemas next Spring. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

I’m Fine: Season 2 Trailer – Catching up with the gay friends in the show’s second instalment

November 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The gay streaming service Dekkoo has brought us a few interesting shows such as Feral and Three, but one of the best has been I’m Fine. The first season was released on the service earlier this year and has since made its debut on DVD (thanks to TLA releasing).

Now it’s coming back for a second season, which will hit Dekkoo in January. We can get a taste of what’s in store with the new trailer.

In the first season, ‘Nate just broke up with his boyfriend, but he’s totally fine. His best friend Jeff is always by his side, and his other friend, Andy, experiencing a happy, healthy relationship doesn’t bother him at all. Why would it? As Nate navigates the daily struggle of dealing with an ex who just won’t go away, he continues to feel like he might break – but really, he’s fine. I’M FINE is a comedy series that explores gay male relationships and friendship with a brutally honest edge.’ So what’s going to happen next? [Read more…]

Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling (DVD Review) – JK Rowling’s detective hits the small screen

November 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Burke, Holliday Grainger, Tara Fitzgerald, Martin Shaw
Director: Michael Keillor
Running Time: 180 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 27th 2017 (UK)

Apparently, the BBC enquired about the rights to Robert Galbraith’s novel, The Cuckoo’s Calling, before it was revealed that Galbraith was actually a pseudonym of JK Rowling. However, it’s likely their plans for a TV version changed once they realised the interest that would be generated by the connection to the Harry Potter author.

This year we got five episodes of ‘Strike’, the first three of which adapted The Cuckoo’s Calling, and the other two The Silkworm. This DVD just contains the former, introducing us to private eye Cormoran Strike (Tom Burke) – an injured war veteran (he lost part of his leg in Afghanistan), who’s swimming in debt and sleeping in his office. War For The Planet Of The Apes (DVD Review) – Caesar’s story reaches a dark & impressive crossroads

November 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Karin Konoval, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller
Director: Matt Reeves
Running Time: 136 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 27th 2017 (UK)

The recent Planet Of The Apes prequel trilogy is probably the most consistently impressive ‘blockbuster’ franchise of the past decade. The movies break the rules far more than they’re generally given credit for, getting progressively more radical as they’ve gone along. This is, after all, a big budget, tentpole franchise where human beings are the bad guys – they’re increasingly presented as brutal, arrogant, cruel and largely deserving of being wiped off the planet.

The three movies have been about the rise of a new civilisation, becoming increasingly confident in having non-human heroes, and that the audience won’t mind siding with the apes against humanity. It’s an oddly radical thing for them to have done. They’ve also become more confident in their moral complexity. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was essentially about an insurgency from the point of view of the insurgents, using the fact that it was apes and humans to hide the fact that its strongest parallels were about America had done in Iraq and Afghanistan.
