New Tomorrowland: A World Beyond Trailer – George Clooney heads for another world

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tomorrowland-poster1-slideGeorge Clooney has generally shied away from blockbuster type movies, but he’s hoping he’ll have a huge hit with Tomorrowland: A World Beyond – as is Disney which has spent $150 million to make the movie.

Now a new trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure “Tomorrowland,” starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

‘Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.’

The film is linked to the Disneyland world it’s named after, although in the film’s world, it was Walt Disney that took inspiration from another planet, rather than the other way around. The film is out in the UK on May 22nd. [Read more…]

The Little Prince Trailer – Fresh look at the animated take on the classic tale

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

little-prince-posterAntoine de Saint-Exupéry’s 1943 novella The Little Prince has fast become a children’s classic – indeed it is absolutely revered in France, with its author considered a true hero both for his writing and his aviation exploits.

Now a trailer for the upcoming animated version of The Little Prince has arrived, which is keen to show it’s not straying too far from the original.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rediscover one of the most beloved stories of all time. From Mark Osborne, Academy Award® nominated director of Kung Fu Panda, comes the first-ever animated feature film adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s iconic masterpiece, The Little Prince. At the heart of it all is The Little Girl (Mackenzie Foy), who’s being prepared by her mother (Rachel McAdams) for the very grown-up world in which they live – only to be interrupted by her eccentric, kind-hearted neighbor, The Aviator (Jeff Bridges).

‘The Aviator introduces his new friend to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. A world that he himself was initiated into long ago by The Little Prince (newcomer Riley Osborne). It’s here that The Little Girl’s magical and emotional journey into the universe of The Little Prince begins. And it’s where The Little Girl rediscovers her childhood and learns that ultimately, it’s human connections that matter most, and that it is only with heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.’

The movie will debut at Cannes. [Read more…]

Ewan McGregor Will Be Beauty & The Beast’s Lumiere

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ewan-mcgregorThe excellent live-action Beauty & The Beast cast has been growing fast in the past few weeks, but there’s been one role from the 1989 animated movie that hasn’t been filled, until now that is. THR reports that one of the final pieces of the casting puzzle has been fitted into place with the news that Ewan McGregor will play the maitre d’ who is turned into a candlestick, Lumiere.

He joins Dan Stevens (the Beast), Emma Watson (Belle), Luke Evans (Gaston) and Kevin Kline (Belle’s father Maurice), Josh Gad (Lefou), Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts), Ian McKellen (Cogsworth), Audra McDonald (Garderobe) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Plumette).

The movie is due to start shooting at Shepperton in the UK next month with Bill Condon directing. The musical will once more see a small town girl with big dreams being locked up by a beast whose only hope of becoming human once again is to find true love – but this time in live action.

It’ll hit cinemas March 17th, 2017.

Steve Carell & Emma Stone Reuniting For Battle of the Sexes Movie

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-carellIt’s a battle of the Battles Of The Sexes movies, as just a few weeks after HBO announced Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti would star in their film about the famed match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, Deadline reports Steve Carell and Emma Stone will star in a rival movie for Fox Searchlight.

Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the script and previously Danny Boyle was set to direct, but he’s not mentioned in the Deadline report so may have moved on.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

These aren’t the only Battle Of The Sexes movies in the works either, as Will Ferrell has previously been reported to be working on a comedy version where he’ll play Bobby Riggs. However there hasn’t been any news on that film for some time.

First Period (US DVD Review)

April 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Brandon Alexander III, Dudley Beene, Lauren Rose Lewis, Michael Turkin, Leigh Wakeford
Director: Charlie Vaughn
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: April 21st 2015 (US)

It’s initially difficult to know what to make of First Period, largely because it takes a while to get used to the fact the two main female characters are actually played by men. It’s certainly not the first time a film has done it, but there’s something about First Period that initially makes it feel particularly incongruous. I’m not sure what it is, but it may be because normally when it’s done, half the joke is the fact it’s a ‘man in a dress’, but that’s not true here, as it’s never even hinted that Cassie (Brandon Alexander III) and Maggie (Dudley Beene) are anything other than American teenage girls.

The film is a loving homage/send-up of 80s teen movies, with Cassie starting a new school and keen to be noticed and popular. However the moment she turns up the bitchy, popular clique are quick to ensure the slightly overweight girl knows she’s at the bottom of the social heap and that her dreams of popularity are laughable. She does however befriend Maggie, who’s about as unpopular as it’s possible to be, but has a good heart despite her occasional plans for murder. [Read more…]

New Jurassic World Trailer – Chris Pratt looks exceedingly good tracking down Indominus Rex

April 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-world-poster3-slideWhen it was revealed Jurassic World would be set in a fully functioning dinosaur theme park many decided the film would be rubbish, but ever since the first images emerged many have changed their mind and decided it might actually be quite awesome.

That feeling certainly continues with this very cool new trailer which is full of dinos, plenty of harks ack to earlier movies as well as the suggestion the addition of genetically manipulated animals may be a very good idea – including the super-predator, Indominus Rex. We’ve also got three new posters you can look at below.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce the long-awaited next instalment of his ground-breaking Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World. Colin Trevorrow directs the epic action-adventure based on characters created by Michael Crichton. The screenplay is by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Trevorrow & Derek Connolly. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley join the team as producers.’

The film is out in the UK on June 11th 2015. [Read more…]

Mr. Holmes Trailer – Ian McKellen turns detective as Sherlock Holmes

April 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mr-holmes-poster1-slideWhat happened to Sherlock Holmes after he retired? That’s the premise of Mr. Holmes which sees Ian McKellen as an aged version of the famed detective who’s drawn into one last case. Now the first full trailer has arrived, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award nominee Ian McKellen takes on the iconic role of Detective Sherlock Holmes, one of the British literature’s most revered characters in the forthcoming film MR HOLMES.

‘In 1947, the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement.

‘Starring Academy Award nominee Laura Linney (The Savages), Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter) and newcomer Milo Parker, MR HOLMES is adapted from Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind and is directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters).

Gay Short Film Showcase: The Grind – Take a look at the great short & help the filmmaker get to Cannes

April 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-grind-short-filmIt’s many filmmaker’s dream to be invited to Cannes, and that’s just what’s happened to one young American director which he’s still just a student, although there is a problem – he doesn’t have the cash to get to France. Therefore he’s set up a GoFundMe page with the hope of raising enough money to get him to the film festival screening in May.

It’s a great time then to take a look at the film he made, which was created for Campus Moviefest 2015 at the University of Central Florida, but has now found life outside that college. It takes a look at the world of online dating, with a young man chatting online and then heading off for a date with a guy he meets on an app. However with a thousand other men waiting to chat online, modern gay dating isn’t easy.

Take a look at the short below and if you reckon its director, Robert Doobay, ought to be able to go to Cannes, you can head to GoFundMe and help out.

To give you a bit more impetus, Doobay says, “I am incredibly passionate about making movies, and I am very excited for this opportunity. However, at this time in my life, I lack the financial faculties to fund this trip. Friends, family, and fellowmen, I need your support to help fund this life-changing journey. I implore you to help me achieve this life-changing milestone and donate to help me get to the Cannes Film Festival. Anything helps and is greatly appreciated.”

It Takeis Two: Episode 2 – George and Brad take on the ‘mean meme’ at Google HQ

April 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

it-takeis-two-ep2In the first episode of It Takeis Two, Brad Takei was very upset by a mean meme he found about himself on the Internet, and while George said there’s no point taking on the web, Brad wasn’t convinced.

As a result in Episode 2 they’re off to Google NYC HQ, where George is due to take part in a Hangout. However negotiating Google’s labyrinthine offices proves tough (Brad can’t even get the coffee machine to work), and then discovers a rather surprising artificial intelligence at the heart of things.

It’s a lot of fun and this is only the beginning, with George promising that the rest of the episodes will have surprise guests, lots of silliness and a few pranks.

Bryan Cranston Calls For An End To The ‘Silliness’ Of Opposing Marriage Equality

April 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-cranstonThere’s a ot of momentum behind marriage equality in the US, but that has inevitably resulted in a harsh (and sometimes nastily petty) backlash from some conservatives, such as Indiana’s so-called ‘Religious Freedom’ laws, and the fact more anti-LGBT legislation has been proposed in Texas this year than ever before.

One man who doesn’t have any time for this is Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, who was caught by GLAAD on the red carpet of the premiere of Broadway’s Finding Neverland, where he was keen to say “I don’t understand why every person shouldn’t have the rights of any other person all the way down the line.”

He adds, “I’ve been a big supporter of gay rights for forever and I think it’s absurd that there’s still an issue about marriage. I mean, I think it’s insulting also to the gay community to have to constantly bring this up again and again. There are far more important issues to deal with. Let’s end this silliness, accept everyone for who they are and what they are, and embrace that and move on.”

He wasn’t the only one, as the likes of Ansel Elgort and Derek Hough also spoke of their support for marriage equality in GLAAD’s #GotYourBack campaign video, which you can take a look at below. [Read more…]
