Gay Short Film Showcase: Coming Home – The film encouraging Chinese parent to accept gay children has gone viral

February 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

coming-home-short-filmIn the past few days a short film made by PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) China has viral, which seeks to get parents of gay children to accept their child’s sexuality when they come out. It tells the story of a young man who is shunned by his parents when he comes out, but they eventually comes to acceptance of their child.

THR notes, ‘Coming Home was launched to coincide with China’s Lunar New Year’s holiday this week, when families traditionally gather all over the country in much the same way as they do in the U.S. at Thanksgiving.

‘Homosexuality was decriminalized in China in 1997, and in the early 2000’s it was removed from the list of mental illnesses. But there is a deeply held Chinese belief that children are required to marry and bear offspring to continue the family line, which means homosexuality is still heavily stigmatized. Because of this, the Chinese New Year family gathering can be a harrowing experience for gays and lesbians.’

PFLAG China was established in Guangzhou in 2008 and now runs chapters, support groups, and counselling services across China. The short features mothers of LGBTI children in the credits, who encourage gay people to come out and for families to accept them.

Take a look at the short film below. [Read more…]

Darren Criss Will Return To Broadway For Hedwig And The Angry Inch

February 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

darren-crissIn what is becoming a bit of a tradition, the new name for the man playing the title role in Hedwig And The Inch has been announced, so we now know that the show’s creator John Cameron Mitchell will be replaced by Glee’s Darren Criss.

It’s not Darren’s first time of Broadway, as while best known for playing Blaine in the musical TV show, he also had a successful run on the Great White Way in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Criss follows Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and the recent stint from John Cameron Mitchell in Hedwig’s title role. It’s an extremely impressive for a show that many initially thought was a bit of a vanity project for Neil Patrick Harris and wouldn’t survive on Broadway after he left it behind.

John Cameron Mitchell was supposed to be leaving in February but he’s now extended his run through April, with Criss taking over for a 12-week run starting April 29th.

Hedwig is the show’s East German title character, who was left with an angry inch after a botched sex change operation that she had in order to get into the US with her American GI lover. Hedwig then started dating young Tommy Gnosis, who left her behind when he took her music and became a rock star – leaving her understandably bitter (but still very funny).

Hopefully we’ll get to see Criss in the glittery makeup and Platinum wig soon.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Utopies – Two young men fall for one another amidst a decaying utopia

February 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

utopies-short-filmSome of the best short films realise that finding great locations that add to the story can really raise the piece above the ordinary. That’s certainly true here, with director Manfred Rott taking his characters to places in Paris that were built decades ago in the hope of creating a better, futuristic utopia, but which are now strange looking hulks, that are often decaying, impractical and have become hives of dystopia – but still retain an essence of hope.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Two young French men from different social backgrounds spend time together to know each other. They explore the suburbs around Paris and visit vacated utopian architectural projects built in an era when a better future for all was still the goal of society. Inspired, they hope for their own personal utopia where they are free to love each other.’

Utopies screened at numerous LGBT film festivals and won several awards. It’s easy to see why, as the film is oddly lyrical, sweet, and sometimes pretty perceptive, both in its idea about the utopias of the past and the modern world of young gay men ‘hooking up’ (although it is a little too French for its own good sometime).

Take a look at the film below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

The Book Of Life (Blu-ray Review)

February 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Ice Cube
Director: Jorge R. Gutierrez
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: February 16th 2015

Comparing The Book Of Life to Fifty Shades Of Grey may seem od, but there is one thing that brings them together – in my head at least. If Fifty Shades had been written by a man, I can’t help but feel it would have been thought of as horrifically sexist, and with The Book Of Life, I couldn’t help but wonder if some would have accused it of racism if it hadn’t been directed and co-written by people from Mexico.

I’m not necessarily criticising the film, but the movie doesn’t have many qualms about delving into Mexican stereotypes. However the fact is that behind the scenes it had a massive Mexican influence, not just from director Jorge R. Gutiérrez and co-writer/producer Guillermo Del Toro, but also many of the crew, who may infuse the movie with sombreros and bullfighting, but they do so with snarking or belittling, instead attempting to pay tribute to the rich culture. Rabid (Blu-ray Review)

February 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Marilyn Chambers, Frank Moore, Joe Silver
Director: David Cronenberg
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: February 16th 2015

After bringing Shivers to Blu-ray last year, Arrow Video continues to release David Cronenberg’s early work in HD with his follow-up, 1977’s Rabid. Despite the success of the earlier (if controversial movie) it’s in many ways a simpler movie, although still an interesting and effective one.

After a horrific motorcycle accident Rose (Marilyn Chambers) is in need of plastic surgery. Her doctors decide to try an experimental skin graft technique, despite it never being tested before. However things don’t quite go as planned, as when Rose wakes up, she has an insatiable lust for human blood – in fact she can’t eat anything else. [Read more…]

Nasty Baby Wins Teddy Award For Best LGBT Film At The Berlin Film Festival

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nasty-babyThere are lots of film festivals that give awards to LGBT-themed films, but there’s no doubt that one of the most important is the Teddy Award, handed out each year at the Berlin International Film Festival. It has a good history of picking great movies, including Ira Sachs’ excellent Keep The Lights On, Marco Berger’s Absent, Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch, along with last year’s winner, the wonderful The Way He Looks.

Now this year’s Teddys have been given out, with Sebastian Silva’s Nasty Baby taking the Best Feature prize. The movie stars Silva, alongside Kristen Wiig and Tunde Adebimpe, and centres on ‘Freddy, an artist whose desire for a baby has become something of an obsession.’ Freddy’s boyfriend is happy to have a child, and their friend Polly (Wiig) agrees to carry it, but the growing obsession may lead them to take a life. It’s described as a savagely satirical portrait of a group of presumptuous and self-absorbed bohemians.

The Best Documentary prize went to Aldo Garay’s El hombre nuevo (The New Man), about a trans* woman who was born in Nicaragua but raised in Uruguay, who returns to rediscover her home country. The Jury Prize meanwhile was handed to Stories Of Our Lives, an anthology of five short films about LGBT life in Kenya.

Here’s the full list of 2015 winners:

Best feature film: Nasty Baby – Sebastián Silva
Best documentary: El hombre nuevo – Aldo Garay
Best short film: San Cristobal – Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo
Jury award: Stories of Our Lives – Jim Chuchu
Special award: Udo Kier

Brandon Routh Wishes He Was Still Playing Gay In Sitcom Partners

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brandon-routhA couple of years ago it looked like gay people were going to take over US TV comedy, with Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal (about a gay couple having a baby), and Partners, which saw a couple of friends, one of them gay, going into business together.

However neither of them got past their first season, and with Partners not all of the 13 episodes that were made got a network airing in the US.

There’s one person who’s still smarting about the cancellation, Brandon Routh, who played Michael Urie’s boyfriend in Partners.

He tells xfinity, “I had such fun with that character and working with the fabulously talented Michael Urie and David [Krumholtz] and Sophia [Bush] and Max [Mutchnick, co-creator] and David [Kohan, co-creator] and everybody. That was one of those that still, we were on the right recipe and such a good family.”

He adds, “I get people all the time at conventions a lot say, ‘Oh, Partners was so great.’ A lot in Canada because they got to see, I think they might have gotten a few more episodes than we (in the US) got to see. I hear from people on Twitter in South Africa where they got to see all 13 episodes, they released all of them there.”

Routh also talks about he’s grateful for his gay fans, saying “I appreciate the support from everyone. Thankfully, the world, society, is coming to a more rational thought process about sexuality.”

Brandon has recently joined Arrow playing Ray Palmer, aka Atom. You can check out a great image of him in costume here.

Crimson Peak Trailer – Tom Hiddleston & Charlie Hunnam deal with ghosts

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

crimson-peak-poster1Guillermo del Toro hasn’t released too much info on his new movie, Crimson Peak – initially just saying it was a haunted house film. However with the release approaching it’s time to give us a look with the first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Legendary Pictures’ CRIMSON PEAK, a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim), written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Callum Greene produce, and Jillian Share executive produces.’

The trailer looks great, so hopefully the movie will live up to it when it’s released in October, just in time for Halloween. [Read more…]

hot-pursuit-slide1The trailer for Hot Pursuit has arrived. The movie stars Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon, alongside Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara with Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) directing.

Joel Kinnaman May Replace Tom Hardy In Suicide Squad

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joel-KinnamanWhen the cast for Suicide Squad was announced, Tom Hardy was amongst the throng. However when the filming dates slipped slightly he was out, with his schedule meaning he could no longer play Rick Flagg.

Now they may have found a replacement, as TheWrap reports Joel Kinnaman is in talks for the part. Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal were also in consideration, but it’s Kinnaman who’s bagged it.

Assuming he signs on the dotted line, he’ll join Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).

The movie revolveds around an array of supervillains, who have all been captured but are offered the chance for redemption by taking on a mission from which none of them are expected to return alive.

David Ayer is set to direct, with an August 5th, 2016 release date already been set.
