Casey Affleck Will Be A Stoner For Director Joe Wright

September 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ok, that headline is a tiny bit misleading, even if it is true. Casey Affleck is set to play a character called Stoner, rather than following in Cheech & Chong’s footsteps. He’s taking on the title role of William Stoner in the film adaptation of John Williams’ novel, Stoner.

The novel, ‘follows the hardscrabble life of William Stoner, a dirt-poor farmer turned academic, who emerges as an unlikely existential hero while making his way through the first half of the 20th Century. Williams’ 1965 novel has been praised as “a masterly portrait of a truly virtuous and dedicated man.” (New Yorker) “….so well told and beautifully written, so deeply moving, that it takes your breath away.” (New York Times Book Review)’

Blumhouse Productions, Cohen Media Group (CMG) and Film4 are backing the movie, with Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna) directing.

“Because the novel is so beautiful but not well-known, fans of Stoner feel like they’re in a secret club. I’m so excited that Casey, Joe and Andrew [Bovell, Screenwrtier] have come aboard to help expand this club’s membership,” comments Blumhouse head honcho, Jason Blum. “This quintessentially American work is being brought to the screen by a terrific international team and we’re confident their combined perspectives will add rich layers to this moving story.”

Colton Haynes Is Angry At The Way ‘F***ed Up’ Hollywood Treats Gay Actors

September 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

When Colton Haynes came out as gay, he mentioned the pressure he’d felt from agents and others who said that if he wanted a career, he’d have to stay in the closet. In the last few days he’s taken to Twitter to express his anger at one of the reasons so many young actors are told to pretend they’re straight – because if you’re out, in casting many people won’t be able to see beyond your sexuality. And as a result, it can unfairly limit the roles you’ll get.

It’s not the way it ought to be, but unfortunately depite its liberal reputation Hollywood can still be an unexpectedly conservative place, with a real problem with bias – in terms of everything from race to gender to sexuality – that it rarely faces head-on.

Haynes says, ‘Hollywood is so fucked up. So much of the focus is on your personal life & has nothing to do with the talent you have to bring to the table… Thank god for Ryan Murphy, Greg Berlanti, & Jeff Davis. They believe gay actors are more than just their personal lives… So disappointed in how Hollywood cant understand that playing a character has nothing to do with how u live your personal life’.

Davis (Teen Wolf), Berlanti (Arrow) and Murphy (American Horror Story) have given Haynes three of his most prominent roles. However, as his tweets suggest, there are plenty of others who’ve turned him away because he’s gay in real life, or because now he’s out, they won’t consider him for a straight role. However, he has enough discretion not to name anyone in particular.

Haynes recently appeared (in a tiny thong) in the movie Rough Night, and will shortly be seen in American Horror Story: Cult, and is also set to return for the final season of Teen Wolf. [Read more…]

Will & Grace Sneak Peek – Get your best look yet at the return of the big gay sitcom

September 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

On September 28th, WIll & Grace is returning the US TV screen for a new season. Plenty of people are excited – in fact there’s been enough interest that NBC has already expanded the original order from 12 to 16 new episodes, as well as commissioning a second season with 10 more new instalments.

To try and up the excitement, a two-minute sneak-peak at the show’s return has been released, which wants to say that things are pretty much picking up where they left off, except with more jokes about Fox News and Brangelina getting divorced. However, Will and Grace are still as co-dependent as wever, Karen is just as rich and snobby, and Jack is the centre of his very own universe.

Although Will & Grace returns to US TV from the end of September, it’s not clear when it will be seen elsewhere, with no UK airdate currently announced. Take a look at the sneak peek below. [Read more…]

Will Leonardo DiCaprio Be The Joker In The Planned Origin Movie?

September 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a bit of intrigue in Hollywood at the moment. There are rumours that Jared Leto is a bit angry about the announcement that Warner/DC is working on an origin movie for The Joker. That’s because despite Leto playing the role in Suicide Squad and being attached to a couple of spin-offs, he won’t be part of this new, standalone movie that’s in the works.

Some wondered though whether the reason Warner wasn’t involving Leto was because the origina movie would be about a much younger version of The Joker/Jack Napier. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, as THR reports that the studio is attempting to woo Leonardo DiCaprio into playing the role, who’s only three years younger than Jared.

It’s not known how interested DiCaprio might be, but it’s suggested that one of the reasons Warner wanted Martin Scorsese involved as a producer is because it might make it easier to land the actor. THR adds that the, ‘chances of landing DiCaprio could be slim to none. But the attempt in itself sends a signal to talent that Warners wants to hire serious filmmakers to make serious films.’

The probability is therefore that Leo won’t be in the film, but it’s certainly an interesting possibility.

September 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Allen Leech Joins Bohemian Rhapsody Biopic As The ‘Friend’ Who Revealed Freddie Mercury Might Have AIDS

August 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we found out who would be playing the rest of Queen opposite Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, Joe Mazello as John Deacon and Gwilym Lee as Brian May). Now another actor has joined the cast, playing a man who could play a key role in the script and end up as the movie’s ‘villain’.

Allen Leech (Downton Abbey, The Imitation Game) will play Paul Prenter, according to Deadline. Prenter was a close friend (and probably former lover) of Freddie Mercury, who became his personal manager during the height of Queen’s fame. However, his reputation was forever sullied when in the late 80s he took payment from the British tabloids for details about Mercury’s personal life, such as telling them that two of Freddie’s former lovers had died of AIDS. Inevitable that added to growing media speculation that the singer also had the disease (something that wasn’t publicly known at the time). Afterwards the two men never spoke again.

It’s not known if the film will tell that part of the story though, as earlier versions of the script ended around the time of Queen’s triumphant performance at Live Aid. However, that was before Bryan Singer signed on to direct, so things may have changed.

Bohemian Rhapsody starts shooting soon, with plans for an awards season release at the end of 2018.

Xavier Dolan, Troye Sivan & Cherry Jones Join Joel Edgerton’s Gay Conversion Movie, Boy Erased

August 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xavier Dolan

Writer/director/actor Joel Edgerton is pulling together an impressive cast for his gay-themed film, Boy Erased. He already had Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Manchester By The Sea Oscar-nominee Lucas Hedges sttached, and now he’s added the LGBT trio of filmmaker/actor Xavier Dolan, Youtube personality/singer Troye Sivan, and Tony & Emmy winner Cherry Jones.

Alongside them the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary has signed on to appear in the movie, alongside Emily Hinkler (Tyler Perry’s Boo 2), Jesse LaTourette (Z Nation), David Joseph Craig (The Gift), Théodore Pellerin (It’s Only the End of the World), and Britton Sear (Unfinished Business, HBO’s “Vice Principals”)

The film will be based on the book, Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family by Garrard Conley, which telld the story of Jared (Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Kidman and Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a gay conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is ‘the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity’.

Joel Edgerton comments, “The Boy Erased cast is rounding out in a way I could only dream of. We have gathered an incredible ensemble of actors.”

Shooting on the movie starts this autumn, with plans for an Oscar-bait release towards the end of 2018.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray Trailer – Take a look at the animated series about a gay DC Comics character

August 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been increasingly grumblings about how relentlessly straight the world of movies superheroes are – which take place in a universe where not even minor characters are LGBT. While things have been a little better on TV (in shows such as Arrow and Agents Of SHIELD), none of the central characters have been gay.

Now though, Warner/DC is planning to release an animated series via CW Seed, which will centre around a gay character – Freedom Fighters: The Ray. The trailer, released around the time of Comic Con, passed up by when it first released, but we thought we’d post it now after being tipped off by Instinct.

The central character in the show is Ray Terrill, a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. Before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realised he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it.

However, things are slightly turned on their head compared to other shows set in the Arrowverse, is it takes place in a parallel universe where the Nazis won World War II. The result is that in that world, the likes of Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl help prop up the Reich, while The Ray and his friends Black Condor, Red Tornado and other fight for freedom.

Take a look at the trailer below. The show debuts on the CW Seed streaming service in the US this Autumn. [Read more…]

Blade Runner Short Film Explores What’s Been Happening Between The Two Films

August 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s 30 years between when the action of Blade Runner took place and that of the upcoming sequel, Blade Runner 2049. A lot can happen in three decades, and so three short films are coming which explore what’s been happening in that time.

The first of those has arrived in the form of 2036: Nexus Dawn, which takes us into a world where replicants have been banned, but then Jared Leto’s reclusive genius Niander Wallace turns up with plans to change that. Benedict Wong also stars.

It gives us a feel for where Blade Runner 2049 will be going. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.’

Take a look at Nexus Dawn below. Blade Runner 2049 will be in cinemas in October. [Read more…]
