Freak Show Trailer – Alex Lawther, Bette Midler & Laverne Cox star in the queer-themed movie

May 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Freak Show is preparing for its UK release, and in the run-up to the queer-themed movie’s British debut, a new trailer and poster has been released. The film also marks the feature directorial debut of Trudie Styler, best known for acting, producing and being married to Sting.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the award-winning cult novel by James St James and in the vein of ’Clueless’ and ‘Napoleon Dynamite,’ FREAK SHOW tells the moving, heart-breaking and hilarious story of Billy Bloom (Alex Lawther), a boldly confident and eccentric teenager who faces intolerance and persecution at his ultra conservative high school, and decides to fight back on behalf of all the misunderstood freaks of the world. FREAK SHOW stars Alex Lawther alongside Abigail Breslin, Bette Midler, Larry Pine, John McEnroe, AnnaSophia Robb and Laverne Cox and comes to cinemas across the UK and on demand on 22 June through Maven Pictures.

‘BILLY BLOOM (Alex Lawther), once lived a fabulous life in Connecticut, with his equally fabulous mother, MUV (Bette Midler). But when he is suddenly shipped off to his father’s (Larry Pine) Southern mansion, he finds himself a fish out of water.

‘With his closet of extravagant and flamboyant attire, Billy is completely different from the cheerleaders, bible belles and beefy quarterbacks at his new high school. Yet despite the well-meant advice of his father and his housekeeper FLORENCE (Celia Weston) that he should just throw on some blue jeans, Billy is determined to be himself – even if that does mean wearing face glitter to school.’

Jennifer Aniston Is Going To Be A Queer Female President For Netflix’s First Ladies

May 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s proving difficult enough getting a woman into the White House, let alone an LGBTQ one. However, Netflix is going to show us that fiction can do what real-life has failed to with First Ladies. It’s been announced that Jennifer Aniston will play the first female president in the show, with comedian, writer and actor Tig Notaro as her wife.

Notaro also helped come up with the idea for the show and will co-write the script alongside her real-life wife, Stephanie Allynne. Netflix hasn’t released a huge amount of details, except that, ‘First Ladies is a political comedy about America’s first female President and her wife, The First Lady. When Beverly and Kasey Nicholson move into the White House, they’ll prove that behind every great woman… is another great woman.’

Aniston will also produce the series alongside Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Betsy Koch. It’s not known when we might get to see the series – it’ll certainly be one to look out for though!

Donald Glover Confirms He Thinks Lando Is Pansexual (& Maybe Everyone Else In Star Wars Is Too)

May 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week Solo: A Star Wars Story co-screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan revealed that he thinks that Lando Calrissian, as played by Donald Glover and previous Billy Dee Williams is pansexual. He told HuffPo, “There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity – sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of. He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.”

Although he seems pretty sure, he’s also leaving things open to speculation and interpretation. Plus it sounds like he might have been held back from being more explicitly LGBT in the movie.

However, now Lando himself – or at least Donald Glover – has said he agrees with this interpretation of the character. Talking at a Solo town hall alongside co-stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, and Paul Bettany due to air on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio (channel 105) on Thursday (and reported by EW), Glover even went as far as to suggest perhaps a lot of the Star Wars universe is pansexual.

He says, “How can you not be pansexual in space? There are so many things to have sex with. I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody. I mean, yeah, whatever. It just didn’t seem that weird to me ‘cause I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of like, the door is open! It’s like, no, only guys or girls. No, it’s anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have good time out here.”

He adds, “One thing that Billy did say was, be charming. He’s eclectic. He likes different things. He’s somebody who goes around and tries everything, and I just didn’t think about it that much. But I was like, he’s a charming person so I feel like he doesn’t have hard and fast boundaries about everything. But having somebody tell me that, I’m like, okay, cool, makes sense to me. Is it weird that I didn’t think about it that much?”

May 14, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

RuPaul is busy! Alongside the continuing & growing success of Drag Race, two new series featuring the drag superstar are in the works. The first is coming soon via Drag Race producer World Of Wonder’s new streaming platform, WOW Presents Plus. It sees RuPaul as an animated unicorn alonhside a bevy of drag queen toddlers. Those youngsters are voiced by Drag Race alums such as Bianca Del Rio as Dina Saur, Adore Delano as Roxy Moron, Latrice Royale as Lady Liber T, Detox as Donatella Mewhattodoo, and Valentina as Arugula.

The trailer for the show has arrived, which you can take a look at below. Drag Tots starts streaming on WOW Presents Plus on June 28th.

More Ru will also be coming soon, with a 10-part show that’s just been ordered by Netflix. This is a live-action outing, which comes with some other illustrious talent involved, as Sex & The City showrunner Michael Patrick King is helping brings the series to life.

According to THR the series, currently titled AJ and the Queen, ‘will follow RuPaul as Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s RV with her unlikely sidekick, AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway. As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better. Oh, and RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.’

Netflix has ordered 10 hour-long episodes of the show. RuPaul and King will co-write and produce the series, although there’s no news on exactly when we’ll get to see it.

If all that weren’t enough, the drag legend is also involved in the previously announced Queen over at Hulu, loosely based on his rise from club kid to drag queen superstar.

Ideal Home UK Trailer – Paul Rudd & Steve Coogan become a bickering gay couple

May 14, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month we got our first look at Ideal Home, which sees Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan teaming up to play a married gay couple. That trailer got a lot of people hot under the cover about how good Rudd looks with full beard.

Now it’s been announced that Ideal Home will be available in cinemas and on Digital HD from 6th July 2018, courtesy of Signature Entertainment. Alongside that has come the UK trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Flamboyant TV chef Erasmus Brumble (Coogan) along with his director and long-term partner Paul (Rudd), are happy going through life playing as hard as they work. But suddenly they have to decide whether to grow-up or continue down their well-trodden path, when Erasmus’s estranged grandson, Bill (played by Jack Gore), unexpectedly turns up at their door, after his father is taken away to serve time in prison.

‘Having another mouth to feed can always come with its strains, but the couple’s fears that they are not yet cut out to be devoted parents become apparent very quickly, with their lavish social lifestyle (and an extensive erotic film collection) getting in the way of their duties as responsible guardians. As unsuited as this small family may initially seem, the loving bond they eventually form is threatened to be broken when Bill’s father warns he’ll take him away upon his release from jail.’

Take a look at the UK poster and trailer below. Plus, there’s a new close-up of beardy Paul Rudd for those who like that sort of thing! [Read more…]

Mapplethorpe Trailer – Plus the Matt Smith starring biopic of the gay photographer needs your help

May 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mapplethorpe, the biopic of legendary gay photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, debuted at the Tribeca Film Fesitval a couple of weeks ago. However, just because the film has screened, doesn’t mean it’s finished, so an IndieGoGo campaign has been launched to help raise funds for things like music licensing, special effects and the expense of taking the movie around to festivals.

Alongside the campaign, the first trailer for the film has arrived, giving us a look at Matt Smith as Mapplethorpe in Ondi Timoner’s film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Robert Mapplethorpe’s portraits, images of calla lilies, and chronicles of New York City’s underground BDSM scene remain touchstones of 20th-century photography even now, nearly three decades after his death from complications of HIV/AIDS in 1989. Mapplethorpe revisits the titular photographer’s legacy, beginning at the moment just before he takes up residence in the Chelsea Hotel. There, Mapplethorpe begins to amass a portfolio of images—and, at the same time, to explore his formerly supressed attraction to men. But Mapplethorpe’s relentless ambition—as he says in one early scene, “I can’t just be Mapplethorpe the photographer,” fancying himself a “modern Michelangelo”—threatens to tear apart the relationships he cherishes the most.

‘From the early ’70s until his untimely death at age 42, the film explores the intersection of his art and his sexuality, his struggle for mainstream recognition, and, looming above it all, the specter of the emerging AIDS crisis. Featuring Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) and Marianne Rendón, the biopic offers a nuanced portrait of an artist at the height of his craft and of the self-destructive impulses that threaten to undermine it all.’

Take a look at the trailer, clip and fundraising video below, and if you like what you see, head over to Indie GoGo to help complete the movie. There are also some interesting perks on offer, including props and clothes used in the movie. [Read more…]

May 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Netflix seems to on a mission to prove that whatever Hollywood can do, it can do too. After Tinsel Town produced its first mainstream gay teen comedy release, Netflix is lining up something that fits in the same ballpark – Alex Strangelove. Everything is smooth sailing until Alex shares that he’s decided to part ways with his virginity – and meets Elliott (Antonio Marziale), a sweet and confident gay boy who isn’t shy about his instant crush on Alex…who may or may not feel the same.
